Flamingos Are Pretty Funky introduces young readers to flamingos and their fantastic and (truly) fabulous traits. A companion to Wombats Are Pretty Weird, this funny, reader-friendly narrative nonfiction picture book about the natural world features sidebars, comic panels, and extensive backmatter.
Flamingos are tall, wading birds known for their bright pink color. Their nests look like tiny volcanoes, and they live in areas that are considered extreme—from nearly boiling bodies of water filled with corrosive chemicals to cold, mountainous regions where ice freezes around their feet. And if you ask their snake friend Joey, those aren’t the only things that are fabulous about flamingos!
Abi Cushman’s Flamingos Are Pretty Funky contains informative, expressive, and funny illustrations of flamingos in their natural habitats. This enlightening picture book offers an entertaining blend of narration, sidebars, speech balloons, and dialogue, and is a refreshing departure from traditional nonfiction. Flamingos Are Pretty Funky serves up a child-friendly guide to the fun and fancy world of flamingos and the mystery, beauty, and science of the natural world.
Backmatter includes additional information about flamingos and their habitats.
Abi Cushman is an award-winning author-illustrator of funny picture books, including Wombats Are Pretty Weird, Animals Go Vroom!, and Soaked!.
When she’s not creating picture books, Abi works as a web/graphic designer. Her educational website Animal Fact Guide was named a “Great Website for Kids” by the American Library Association. She also enjoys running, playing tennis, and eating nachos. (Yes, at the same time.)
Flamingos are stinky, loud, and eat shrimp. But they're also pretty cool. Love the silly tone to this book of serious flamingo facts. You will learn about location, types, diet, and more. I'd add this to the school library as an excellent example of factual fiction.
Another great picture book by Abi Cushman. The main text is clear, straightforward, well-researched nonfiction, with all kinds of interesting facts about flamingos. My favorite surprising fact: A flamingo's knee is inside its body where we can't see it! Oh, and the fact that some of them live in very hot or corrosive water, which predators avoid. And then alongside the nonfiction text, there's the hilarious commentary in speech bubbles from the flamingos and the snake, which will make the book extra fun and the facts more memorable for kids. I liked the inclusion of photos of the 6 different species of flamingos in the back matter, and appreciated the information there about conservation status and threats the flamingos face where they live.
Did you know that a flock of flamingos is actually called a flamboyance? Or that what appears to be the bird’s knee is actually its ankle? No? Well, get ready to dive into all things flamingo in FLAMINGOS ARE PRETTY FUNKY, by author-illustrator Abi Cushman. Like its predecessor, WOMBATS ARE PRETTY WEIRD, this book both informs and entertains with lots of laughs to be had along the way. Perfect for animal loving kids who like a little humor on the side!
Richie’s Picks: FLAMINGOS ARE PRETTY FUNKY: A [NOT SO] SERIOUS GUIDE by Abi Cushman, HarperCollins/Greenwillow, June 2024, 40p., ISBN: 978-0-06-323444-4
“Behold the flamingo, a tall wading bird known for its bright-pink color.”
“On our block all of the guys call her flamingo 'Cause her hair glows like the sun And her eyes can light the skies. When she walks she moves so fine like a flamingo Crimson dress that clings so tight She's out of reach and out of sight” – Manfred Mann (1966)
“Flamingos get their color by eating it. The algae and shrimp they feed on contains orange and red pigments called carotenoids. These chemicals are then absorbed into the flamingo’s feathers, beak and legs, and give them that vibrant pink hue.”
Just imagine if YOU turned the color of your most recent meal. That notion had me thinking about Camilla Cream in David Shannon’s 1998 hoot-of-a-tale A BAD CASE OF STRIPES. What color chemicals might have been in HER latest dinner?
Or imagine if, like a flamingo, you ate your meals with your head upside-down, utilizing a tongue pump, a beak comb, a salt sifter, and a moveable upper bill in order to filter your chow. I dare you to try!
In FLAMINGOS ARE PRETTY FUNKY, author-illustrator Abi Cushman has created an exceptionally fun and appealing nonfiction picture book for middle graders. The primary text is packed with great facts such as the six varieties of flamingos, and their respective ranges around the globe; their habit of “applying” makeup their bodies produce in a gland, as they prepare for impressive mating dances; how the parents puke up and feed their babies bright red “crop milk” which also serves to color the babies (and temporarily depletes the parents’ colors); and their unusual bone structures. (The part of their leg you see them bend is their ankle. Their knees, which bend like ours, are not readily visible.)
On top of all this great info, and on top of the vivid, eye-catching illustrations, there is goofy/cranky banter going on between representatives of each of the six flamingo varieties along with the s-s-silly s-s-snake previously seen in Cushman’s WOMBATS ARE PRETTY WEIRD.
The dialogue is a serious crack-up, but this is no fluff piece. The book concludes with excellent backmatter including a glossary and an impressive list of related resources. This is a first-class resource and a great read.
A wacky guide to those pink lawn ornaments (and the real birds too). In this humorous book, the author shares facts about flamingos, from how they got their pink hues, how they mate, how they eat, and more. The author anthropomorphizes the flamingos, giving them unique personalities and conversations with each other throughout the book. The author also includes another silly character names Joey, a snake who lives amongst the flamingoes and helps illustrate their differences. The author discusses how there are six different types of flamingos, and how each after named for a unique characteristic. Then, we learn that flamingos are pink because of their diet - they ingest carotenoids like those in carrots which make them orange. We learn how flamingos of different species adapt to their environmental needs, and often don't have to worry about predator because of their ability to live in harsh conditions. Combining facts with silly conversations, this guide gives readers a laugh and an inside look into the lives of flamingos. This book was super silly, and a fun read, especially for elementary audiences. The facts are easily digestible, and combine with the fun conversations this birds have to create a better understanding of the lives of flamingos. I love how the author personifies each different kind of bird, and their different habits, because that made the book more fun to read. The snake character was a fun addition too, as they serve as a learner like figure to the world of flamingos. The author also includes real pictures facts about each flamingo species in the back of the book, as well as a glossary of scientific terms for readers to utilize. Kids love animal books, and this one feels like it would fit right in on a nonfiction elementary shelf. It includes facts in a way that is fun to read with silly pictures and conversations, and the cover itself is inviting and makes you want to open it up. I could see this being used as a source for learning, but also just as a fun addition to shelves.
Children's nonfiction. I loved Abi Cushman's book last year Wombats Are Pretty Weird: A (Not So) Serious Guide so was excited to see she had another animal book out this year. This book is full of information on flamingos, starting with a world map introducing the names and ranges of the 6 types of flamingos (American, Chilean, Andean, James's, Greater, and Lesser). We read about the food that gives flamingos their famous pink hue, their natural makeup, courtship dance, nests and chicks, what types of water they live in and the adaptations that help them live there. The part I found most interesting was the way their beaks are designed to eat with the bird's head upside down and to filter out salt. Many more facts are included, all narrated by the flamingos and a chatty snake who speak in color-coded speech bubbles. Back matter includes facts laid out about each of the 6 species (photographs, scientific name, height, weight, conservation status, and threats), glossary with pronunciation guide for some words, and further reading suggestions. A surprising amount of information in a fun, child-friendly format.
Cushman’s newest picture book in her Explorer Series is an informative, funny guide to flamingos.
An unseen narrator encourages the reader to “back-up” until a complete flamingo is on the page. The same snake that appeared in the wombat guide is back again offering observations, questions and a touch of sarcasm. Other animals add to the conversation. The text gives lots of good and some surprising information about flamingos. The six varieties of flamingos are described. The reader learns why flamingos are pink, as well as what and how they eat. There is a really interesting explanation of why flamingos stand on one leg and how a flamingo's knee is inside its body.
The illustrations range from cartoons to color photographs; they start on the front endpapers and end on the back endpapers. Cushman includes a glossary and a further reading list with weblinks. She really does a great job of combining facts with fun. The book is an excellent example of well-researched and enjoyable juvenile nonfiction. Young readers will enjoy impressing friends and family with flamingo facts!
I Highly Recommend this title for school and public libraries serving grades Pre-K through third. It would be a fun gift book for young animal lovers, too.
Flamingos are more than just lawn ornaments and pool floaties! This fabulously funny book, colorfully illustrated, answers all the flamingo questions you never knew you had, like: Why are flamingos pink? Do flamingos wear makeup? Can they dance? Do they prefer standing on one leg or two? What temperature do they like their water?
With her signature humor and word play, Abi Cushman makes it fun for kids and adults to learn about flamingos. Every page is full of fascinating flamingo facts, often presented by the flamingo characters themselves, with hilarious side comments from the snake – a wannabe flamingo.
At the end, there’s a helpful flamingo glossary and photos with brief descriptions of various types of flamingos around the world, including their threat level due to environmental concerns. Kids, teachers, and parents will laugh out loud as they read this zany - but factual! - tale. I’d love to see the book on a story-board walk at a zoo!
Flamingos Are Pretty Funky is an incredibly entertaining and informative picture book, easily convincing every reader that these special birds are more than pretty in pink! A great mix of narrative text, engaging dialogue, and text boxes makes the learning funny and fun while the bright illustrations will keep the attention of readers at a wide range of ages and abilities. A snake sidekick explores the flamingo lifestyle on most spreads, bringing added laughter and energy to already info-packed pages. Puns, recurring jokes, and visual surprises make for strong re-readability appeal. Back matter helps support the vocabulary and provides extra info on each species (including the Lesser, no matter how overlooked he feels with a name like that) and provides resources for those who want more information. Highly recommend for the home or classroom library.
Hilarious non-fiction with fun dialogue from funky flamingos and a drab-pea-greeny snake. I learned so much about Flamingos – I had no idea there are so many different varieties – and that they are fantastic dancers! They will tell you all about themselves with flamboyant and funny facts. The illustrations are bright and fun with fantastic facial expressions that made me laugh. I also appreciated the conservation status at the back alongside real photographs of the different flamingos and what challenges they face. I can imagine kids reading this again and again to laugh at the speech bubble commentary (and learning a ton about flamingos as they go!). Takeaway? Flamingos are fantastic and you will want to learn all about them. This will be a great choice for gifts, schools, and libraries.
Abi Cushman brings her trademark humor to this delightfully entertaining ode to flamingos around the globe (and to one drab, pea-green snake). Cushman shares fascinating as well as funky facts (Did you know that large groups of flamingos are called “flamboyances” and that they eat with their heads upside-down?) about these pink-feathered phenoms through her characteristically quirky speech bubbles and eye-pleasing call-outs, while the singular snake-on-the-sidelines serves up slices of whimsy, Greek chorus style (“Who’s ready to fla-MINGLE?”). A glossary and further reading section are excellent additions to the text. This fabulously funky book will draw readers young and old into its playful pages time and time again! A must-have for bookshelves everywhere!
This book made me laugh. A lot! I can't remember the last time a nonfiction book made me laugh this much. Not only did I laugh a lot, I also learned oodles of fascinating facts about flamingos. A flamboyance of flamingos plus one "drab pea-greeny" snake add hilarious dialogue and commentary while the narration shares a wealth of tantalizing flamingo facts. Like did you know that it actually takes less effort for a flamingo to stand on one leg than two?! And that during mating season flamingos add natural makeup to their cheeks (from a gland near their tails) to enhance their pink coloring! And, as always, Abi's illustrations are full of charm and humor. Kids will eat this book up and beg for repeat readings. This one is an absolute winner -- highly recommended!
A fun(ky), comprehensive, nonfiction book with expository text and hilarious conversation by Cushman! This book was uniquely formatted to engage the reader through expository text that covers every aspect of flamingos; from the reason behind their pink color, to the different species of flamingos, to interesting facts - like how they wade in toxic water to avoid predators. Amidst all the facts is a fun and sassy (and relevant!) conversation going on between the flamingos and a snake that will keep readers entertained and learning. Back matter includes more information on the different species of flamingos, like their size, conservation status and threats they face today. Wonderfully written and illustrated by the talented Abi Cushman - great read!
First off, this book has one of the funniest endpapers in recent memory. So don't skip checking that out once you finish reading the text--- because it really is the joke that closes out the whole book.
Abi Cushman, author of the wonderful Wombats Are Pretty Weird, does it again with the fantastic Flamingos Are Pretty Funky. Cushman's use of speech bubbles, sidebars, and diagrams is masterful, infusing both facts and humor into an engaging nonfiction text. The book also includes back matter on each flamingo species as well as a glossary. Teachers and librarians, you'll want to hand this one to animal lovers, but also to kids who claim nonfiction is boring. This would be a great book for animal reports, but it's a highly engaging (and fun!) nonfiction read all on its own.
I absolutely loved this story--right away the humor drew me in, and I consistently snorted throughout the book. I loved learning so much about flamingos! The information is dripped in with engaging illustration and writing, which oscillates between clear nonfiction text and very funny commentary and wisecracks from the animals. The end includes photos of all the different types of flamingos featured, which I appreciated, as well as a glossary and a list for further learning. When I finished this book, I felt a newly grown love for these iconic birds, and very much appreciate this wonderful tribute to them. They are, indeed, pretty funky :)
This is a fun and hilarious dive into the world of flamingos. Combining nonfiction and humor is a challenging task—one that Cushman does masterfully. The main nonfiction text is packed with fascinating facts about flamingos, while the art includes funny commentary and speech bubbles, making flamingos relatable for kids. Readers will be sure to keep an eye out for the snake sidekick, who inspires lots of belly laughs. Sidebars provide more cool science information, like how flamingoes get their color and how their beaks are adapted for feeding upside down. Who says learning can’t be LOTS OF FUN?!
This laugh-out-loud book about flamingos is sure to be a hit with young and old! The straightforward nonfiction text is accompanied by humorous commentary from cartoon-like flamingos. Kids will love both the jokes and fascinating facts. One of my favorite facts: flamingo parents regurgitate red liquid into their offspring mouths, losing enough carotenoids that their feathers can turn white by the end of the breeding season! Observant readers will also enjoy following the antics of a green snake and its interesting take on all things flamingo. A great addition to a home or school library that will be read and reread.
As the title of this book states, FLAMINGOS ARE PRETTY FUNKY. They are also pretty fascinating and in this book’s case, funny. This second (not so) serious guide by @abi.cushman will definitely teach you something new and leave you chuckling. Just like her first book (WOMBATS ARE PRETTY WEIRD), this book introduces readers to flamingos with the help of a talking snake. I learned that flamingos feed their babies a bright-red liquid called crop milk that comes out of their throats and that they avoid predators by milling around in toxic, corrosive water. 😳 Young readers will love these cool, slightly gross facts and adults will love rereading it for its humor. Definitely check it out.
This entertaining book is a must-read for curious kids! It will make you grin and guffaw and laugh out loud, all while learning tons of fascinating facts about flamingos. Thorough while also managing to be concise, the writing clips along at a perfect pace, sure to keep kids turning the pages. Illustrations are full of personality. Humorous asides, in the form of speech bubbles, make these birds relatable and make the facts presented stick with you long after you close the book. Highly recommend!
I’m a big fan of WOMBATS ARE PRETTY WEIRD, and I have to say FLAMINGOS ARE PRETTY FUNKY is just as good! Kids will love the funny illustrations and the hilarious banter between the characters while learning a lot about flamingos. The main text and fact boxes are fascinating, highly engaging and tackle a number of tricky biological concepts in a kid-friendly way. The back matter has further information about different flamingo species, a glossary and suggestions for further reading. I hope there are more books on the way in this series! Highly recommended for young readers.
Who doesn't love flamingoes? This funny kid's book provides lots of facts alongside the laughs. All six species of flamingoes are featured--as is a green snake named Joey! I had no idea flamingoes could brighten their own color or that their nests looked like little volcanoes, and found this book to be fascinating. Kids will enjoy learning some facts and passing them along. These beautiful birds come alive in the illustrations.
I also really liked Abi Cushman's other book in this series, WOMBATS ARE PRETTY WEIRD.
It's not often you find a laugh out loud STEM book--but that's what this is! I learned a TON, chuckled throughout and appreciated the bright illustrations that pop on the page. There are many layers to the text, which makes this the type of book you can read again and again, and to different age groups. There's the main text, the voice bubbles, and fascinating sidebars. For example, I didn't know that like flamingos, cardinals get their color by eating it too! Enjoy this book with the littles in your life. The grown-ups will learn from it as we read alongside them.
Second in this series (after Wombats Are Pretty Weird), this book humorously educates the reader about flamingos. The narrative text delivers straightforward information about flamingos, from nesting, to eating, to physiology, which is presented in a conversational tone. Meanwhile, the flamingo characters themselves, along with Joey the Snake, interject funny quips and comments throughout the book. The result is a nonfiction book that readers will laugh out loud while reading and won't want to put down.
Think flamingoes are just flashy and pretty? Learn all about their funky attributes too in this nonfiction picture book.
I learned quite a bit things about flamingos from this book…and I also smiled through the whole thing. Cushman does a great mix of solid science facts, and humorous text and illustrations, that makes one enjoyable nonfiction picture book. You’ll learn without even realizing you’re learning.
Similar to its predecessor, WOMBATS ARE PRETTY WEIRD, this is a very funny and very informative look at flamingos. Some fun facts I learned: There are 6 species of flamingos! Some flamingos hang out in toxic water, and others in near boiling water! Flamingo nests look like tiny volcanoes! Kids will laugh a lot and learn a lot.
Flamingos aren't only funky, they are fun and fascinating and Abi Cushman successfully imparts this information with humor, style and creative illustrations. The various layers of information are presented in engaging ways including narrative text, sidebars, speech bubbles, a sidekick snake, and backmatter. For anyone who enjoys learning and laughing.
Wow, I had no idea how much I didn't know about flamingos! This book drew me right in with its humor and the fascinating (or should I say funky?) facts kept me turning the pages. Kids will love re-reading this one too because there are so many fun details to discover in both the text and the illustrations. Another winner from Abi Cushman!
The title claims that this is a "Not So" serious guide to Flamingos and while it is silly in parts, it is remarkably informative. I see flamingos every time I go to the zoo but I will look at them quite differently after reading this picture book. Humorous speech bubbles will help pull kids into this book, but they'll stay for the pages of in depth info about these pink birds.
Lots of good information in a fun and informal style. I did not realize that there were six species of flamingoes, so it was interesting reading about the differences in these species. The author includes general information about anatomy, food, and nesting habits. The author includes a glossary and a bibliography of books and websites.
