魔導具師ダリヤはうつむかない ~今日から自由な職人ライフ~ (Novel) #8

Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start With Magical Tools Volume 8

Rate this book
Through spending time with the Beast Hunters—for example, during field training—Dahlia has been strengthening the bond between her and the Order. One of their knights, Volf, asks her to “back-embroider” his undershirts—an old tradition of stitching a design onto the back of a knight’s clothing to ensure his safe return from the field. Dahlia accepts his request and also experiments with enchanting her prototype with slime. What initially appears to be a failure ends up becoming not only an impetus for a company emblem but also an innovation. Furthermore, as a result of this new invention, leading experts in various disciplines get involved in the Rossetti company, as does an ex-Beast Hunter. Dahlia continues tackling challenges and making progress in the eighth volume in her crafting journey.

Better than ever

This series manages to get more precious every time. Dahlia remains firmly rooted in her belief that all magical tools should be available to anyone. I love how Marquis Bernigi was able to once again be able to stand on his own two legs and think of the future, thanks to that very philosophy. As always I look forward to the next instalment.

The series has a huge problem with "solving" problems that shouldn't be there to begin with. Meaning that there's all this elaborate etiquette stuff and constant near misses of offending noble persons, and...it's just silly. It doesn't make sense in the context of their world, where nobles are apparently made and destroyed very easily. Why bother to be so rigid about etiquette in such an unstable demographic, which has a ton of commoners that get elevated?

The end finally reveals the backstory of Dahlia's mother, and...it's stupid. She made herself sick over love, then they were together, she was very ill during pregnancy, and then she....forgot Carlo and their two years together completely because of some "disease" that's only in her head but can't be diagnosed. So he's forced to let her go and take Dahlia to raise (almost didn't get to do that either because OMG it's so hard to be a single dad! Again, sounds like BS that was just added for drama) while she remarries a guy that can help her family and also help heal because otherwise she's going to die of this mysterious disease in her head. So if Dahlia is also part noble, is she going to suddenly break out with powerful magic? And WTF does it mean that her family was just taken over by her sister's in-laws? Seriously, the sister was the heir, she married a guy, then that guy's family said "you're adopting your stepson as the next heir, end of story, and btw we're raising taxes on you" and it's explained as the usurpation is legal because they "have the law in their pockets." And they have to offer their daughter (with the diseased head) to another faction to save themselves. See what I mean about nobles just falling out of nowhere? And the nonsensical BS that's just tossed in for no reason?

It's also absurd how they invent things and get them to market - Dahlia literally does zero research on the materials or anything, just makes things and boom they're groundbreaking and her partners immediately find marketing channels, THEN do some research. For some reason they immediately start thinking of fake boobs and start babbling about it, and Dahlia is clueless despite being from a former life where cosmetic surgery was ACTUALLY a thing. It never even occurs to her and then she's ashamed that she never considered the medical use of this thing she randomly made by accident. Ok. It's nice that without any real prep she can just make an amazing prosthetic leg too, one that has an old man that was described as skin and bones fighting like he's young again. And it babbled about that family being so villainous. It went really incoherent in this volume.

Crab hunting (and eating), and slime treated cloth developments are the primary stories of this volume with a dash of romance and character development for those around Dahlia. In other words, a decent addition to the series that fits earlier volumes well enough. I probably would enjoy a bit more progress in the romance, and Dahlia is a bit too successful in tool development for my taste, but those are minor complaints for me. All in all, a good entertaining read, but nothing too special.

We're finally getting some background on Dahlia's mother's side! *air horns*

Also, someone is putting pressure on the main couple *Que "Under Pressure" by Queen*, Dahlia, and Volt, so this slow burn is finally making more progress!! *louder airhorns*

And finally, light a candle for the slime monsters; please don't hate Dahlia too much. Lol.

Marcella and his grandfather Birnigi’s family reunion was touching. I cried buckets at Carlo’s grief, his wife forgetting him and her daughter. The obstacles of him raising Dahlia alone with the maid, the sorrow and happy memories they had together. All this morphed into what Ivano said about her future husband-material: ‘Finding someone as Carol!’ Dahlia sat the bar very high, and if our black-haired hound wanted to stay by his princess, the road is still very long.

This volume is my favorite so far and I’m excited to see their upcoming adventures.
