The Trader series book five.

1870s

Love that the first half of the books are set on a ship making the voyage from England to Australia, and the last half how Bram Deagan, his immediate family and friends settled in the Swan River Colony.
The ships divided passengers by wealth and class. First- and second-class passengers stayed in staterooms and cabins. But most people were in third class, called steerage. I had no idea. Fascinating stuff. Oh, and first class passengers had exclusive use of the poop deck. Can you imagine those poor people in steerage how hot and stuffy it would have been at the bottom of the ship, and not to mention the poor conditions and the very long voyages. *Shiver*

I delighted in seeing Bram’s family increase in size and how they all came together and find home in the Colony.

What a splendid end to the final instalment in this amazing five book series! Sad that it is over, though. Loved this series so much I will look for the next series from this author.

The Trader's Reward is the final of a five book historical series by Anna Jacobs, The Trader Series. I have really loved this series. Although I didn’t find this book quite as captivating or page-turning as the others’ in the series, it finishes the series off quite nicely. This series was a spin off of the The Swan River Series which I also enjoyed. Anna has a beautiful gift of transporting the reader to another time and place – and if you like lovely, historical, rich reads, this is for you.

This series was fantastic. I’m sad to have finished it. I loved all the characters and the extended family members. I loved hearing about the travels on the boats and the stories about the era. I highly recommend this series to everyone. It had a lot of character and was a awesome family saga.

Rating: 2 (I always find it difficult to accurately rate an audiobook. Maybe because it feels to me like a completely separate experience to reading the book and so I feel like I lack the experience?) U/PG?? [Storytime: I listened to this on a family car journey complete with little sisters, so all the 'suggestive' parts were turned down very low so I have no idea how racy this historical novel actually is]

This is a book I would not have normally picked up, or read without skipping parts, but as I did listen to all 12 hours of it (minus the suggestive parts :D) I got to know it in its entirety. It took me a while to place it in its context (as a sort of life-story-type, linear novel whose appeal lies in the characters steady movement in life rather than any hooks) but by about 8 hours in I was quite invested in the characters. I'm not entirely sure how much of this was the story itself and how much was the opportunity cost added value or the fact that it was listened to along with my entire family and so when the one dramatic moment (that was a little Deux Ex Machina) happened everyone could let out cries of disbelief, and when Remi & Livia or Fergus & Cara were interacting my little sister (who was Not Impressed with the Romance) would fake gag and pull faces which added to my enjoyment of it immensely. It felt a little chick lit to me, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It did end a little too neatly, but I'll forgive it as it was the last in a series (which I didn't know when I was listening to it).
I think the thing I liked most about this book was the memories that are now attached to it ('Fergy-wergy' will ever after bring me back to the French mountains). A different for me, enjoyable enough read.

An excellent finale to a good series.

This last book of the series ties up the Reagan family saga nicely with a solid plot and more interesting characters as Bram's brother Fergus sets out to join him.

Fergus lives in England with his own family and the story begins with a tragedy as his wife died in childbirth. He and Bram, although brothers, haven't seen each other for a decade and had a previously strained relationship at best.

The decision to move to Australia is one made almost for him after his dying wife made him promise to take their children and her parents there to start a new life. Additionally, she makes Fergus promise to remarry within a year. He does so as she breathes her last leaving him with two sons and a newborn daughter.

The author created a very good plot and, again, a family travels the long voyage to Australia. The hopes and uncertainty of these individuals who have, for various reasons, decided to start new lives in the colony so very far away is very well documented here. I found the descriptions very good and the characters self-described and developed.

A great series for readers of historical fiction.

This is an excellent book, I enjoyed reading it like all Anna's other books. I believe that it is part of a saga. But Anna is such a good writer that it doesn't matter if you read them as a stand alone book. Can't wait to read her next one, but which one?????
I might just have a look at Shannah Jay's books.

What a treat

As a relatively new reader to Anna s books I have to say that I have never been so absorbed in a series of books as I have in the Trader series. I read all five , one after the other and could not put them down. Following the families on their journeys to Australia were so interesting, I would love there to be a book 6. So recommend these!

Good series

Really enjoyed the reading. Didn't enjoy paying for 3 books to find I had to buy 2 more afterwards to finish the series and they was expensive considering it was pretty cheap to buy the 3 and also don't like the fact that I have to write a review every single time I finish a book to move on to the next! Hence why 4 star not 5

A story complete!

To be able to read a story that flows into a continuing saga makes my heart sing. I enjoyed following the Deagans through their family migration to a new and better life. What a wonderful journey.

the story was boring, it was a basic white family trying to survive and there's an additional wife that dies for some reason in the beginning of the story. but the rape scenes and how carla handled the man on the boat really made me smile to myself.

Struggled to engage with this book, it felt like there was too many main characters doing not a lot, but trying to survive. Would like to have seen less of the time on the boat and more how they settled in Australia.
