Thomas Stearns Eliot was a poet, dramatist and literary critic. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948 "for his outstanding, pioneer contribution to present-day poetry." He wrote the poems The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, The Waste Land, The Hollow Men, Ash Wednesday, and Four Quartets; the plays Murder in the Cathedral and The Cocktail Party; and the essay Tradition and the Individual Talent. Eliot was born an American, moved to the United Kingdom in 1914 (at the age of 25), and became a British subject in 1927 at the age of 39.
This was one of my childhood favorites, the illustrations and wonderful poetry are stamped on my memories. I recently began reading it to my daughter and now appreciate the poems on a whole new level. One thing to be aware of, because it's so old there are some not so favorable racial references and slang to be aware of when reading to small children so they don't repeat or go around using those words.
Absolutely delightful! The illustrations complement the text marvelously. This collection of Eliot's poems is one of my FAVOURITE books to read with my boys. I highly recommend you get your hands on a copy!
T.S.Elliot has place his three favorite poems into one book. The poems are a little advance for early elementary school readers. But you could still use this book to share the adventure of the characters inside, and have the students use poetry to write a whole adventure.
