Years after World War II, Kate Alfurd is recalled to espionage to seek vengeance on Christian Eilenburg, a Nazi SS lieutenant, and Pierrot, a French collaborator who had betrayed Kate and her lover during the war
Evelyn Anthony was the pen name of Evelyn Bridgett Patricia Stephens Ward-Thomas,
Started her career as a writer of historical fiction, later switched to writing contemporary thrillers, often with an espionage theme.
She met Michael Ward-Thomas on a double date in The Dorchester and both were attracted to each other.] He worked for the Consolidated African Selection Trust. They switched partners and were married a few months later.
They bought Horham Hall in 1968 but found that it was costly and sold it in 1976 and moved to Naas, County Kildare where she had relatives. Increased income from her writing allowed her to buy Horham Hall back in 1982.
In 1994 she became High Sheriff of Essex, the firswt woman in over 700 years to hold this office.
In 1995 her daughter Kitty died of a heroin overdose, leading Evelyn to not write for another seven years.
In 2004 her husband died of a stroke.
She was survived by her children Susan, Anthony, Ewan, Christian and Luke as well as 16 grandchildren.
NB:Some sources give Ms Anthonys year of birth as 1926.
Because she was guilty and the dead were not at rest. In the night's silence she heard their voices on the wind.
This is quite an exceptional book - exceptional in the sense that it certainly wasn't a 5★ read the whole way through! But I'm giving it 5★ anyway. This book rewards a patient reader, as Ms Anthony manages to pull all her threads together in a shattering climax.
World War 2. The young, beautiful & idealistic Kate felt like she would be spending the war scrubbing floors - part of a disciplinary action for losing part of her kit. (Kate was in the Wrens) So she was an easy recruit for a Secret Service in spite of warnings from a hostile & brittle Captain Michaelson that she was too young and didn't realise what she was letting herself in for. After a rigorous training, Kate is sent to France.
This book makes such a satisfying read. The good guys weren't all good - & not all of the bad guys were wholly bad. The consequences for Resistance workers could be horrifying, both men & women. I appreciated the honesty.
I have quite a few of Ms Anthony's books. I need to read more of them.
Intrigue & character development great throughout book
Am now a big fan of Evelyn Anthony, after my 2d book of hers. Anyone who is a WWII buff or likes historical fiction will enjoy many of her works. Wish the meaning of the “ring” in the end were more clear...but that makes the reader mentally “work” too!
Evelyn Anthony is one of my favorite authors. I discovered my first book of hers in the English books shop in Jocelyn, France. Since then her books have been a great delight. That said although I enjoyed this book somehow I thought the ending wasn’t as polished as her other books. Having said that the book did get below the surface of popular views and gave glimpses of the ruthlessness of the English establishment.
This was an interesting book that my mother recommended. It's the story of a woman involved with the French Resistance during WWII, which I found intriguing. The story itself kept me reading, which was a good sign. I enjoyed it overall but it wasn't exactly easy for me to read.
My biggest problem with this book was jumping from the current day to WWII as the story unfolds. There would be breaks to delineate a change but it was still disconcerting. Having only 8 chapters, I think the author would have been better off splitting it out even further. Flip flopping back and forth from one time to another left me a little boggled at first, trying to figure out "when" the characters were. She did use various names for the main character depending upon the era, which did help, a little bit. If it didn't bother me so much, I could see giving this book 4 stars.
I thought this book was ok. It didn't really wow me. I recently read a similar book about women during the French resistance and it dealt with the topic a lot better.
The role of women during the war is interesting and I have heard similar stories of where agents were sacrificed.

I read this as I was given a pile of Evelyn Anthony books - I found it dated and inconsistent, so didn't finish it. I will try one more just in case...
I really enjoyed this. I found an old, beat-up reader's digest containing this short story and adored it more than I imagined I would! Lovely characters, atmosphere, pacing, prose, etc.
Have always enjoyed Evelyn Anthony and at the moment, am busy re-reading some of hers, starting with this one. She write so well and so knowledgeably about the war and later about espionage and spying, each book is a gem
A small book that grows deeper in meaning as it slowly develops. A book that has come to mind since I finished it, a satisfying read, still relevant in our troubled war torn world.
A little slow at the start, but a good book about a Resistance Fighter during WWII who must deal with the loss of many friends/colleagues and reconcile her marriage and life. She cannot move on in her life if she doesn't make peace with what happened.
My favourite book ever . Full of suspense and believable action . If you like stories about the SOE in WW2 that has the ring of authenticity, then this is for you . Would make a great film .
Voices on the Wind, Evelyn Anthony, RDC-M, V5, 2985, 2/86. A former resistance fighter is forced to make a decision about exposing a threat from the past. Good
