Doors to cosmic realms and Olympus … dryads and Greek mythology… a portal librarian. There’s a lot going on in this children’s book debut from Ash Bond.

The endpaper artwork, foil hardback design and map drawings give the book more of a young adult feel, but this is definitely a story for 9-12 year olds. The narrative changes between points of view from different characters but is easy enough to follow with a name st location at the start of each chapter.

It has a quintessentially English feel to it, as well as the library being based in Oxford. There’s also a botanical theme, with Peregrine’s godfather , Daedalus, cultivating herbs and using traditional magics. The family has a history of adventure, discovery and inventing. Like an Indiana Jones who studied a few terms at Hogwarts.

Planned to be the first in a series this promises to be just the start of the adventure for Peteguine Quinn and co.

I enjoyed this. It was lovely being welcomed in to another magical world. Full of adventure right from the very beginning. Lots of twists and things to discover throughout. I thought in some places it was a little padded out but overall I can’t wait for the second one!

4.5 - absolutely wicked read! Gave me the feeling that Percy Jackson gave me the first time - mythology, adventure, humor, friendship. But then you toss in a bit of men in black “government agencies and regulations” as well as cool tech paired with the power hidden in libraries and you have the recipe for a great start to a series! Can’t wait to see where this goes.

With a name like ‘Peregrine Quinn’, of course this was going to be an epic book! It was filled with action, adventure and magic and not to mention a kick ass plant, an awesome librarian and a brave little faun.

The unlikely trio are thrown together in a race to save the realm from the return of an evil mistress who will sow discord and chaos across the Cosmic realm. Peregrine’s godfather, Daedalus Bloom has been kidnapped and there’s no way she’s backing down from the fight to get him back. Even if it means venturing into a world she never thought she’d become a part of…

I loved the bases and nods to Greek myth in this, with Olympus Inc. and figures from the stories like Hekate and Zeus. It was a well written and crafted story with easily likeable characters. It also had the perfect level of intrigue and adventure to keep you reading and it really was effortless to enjoy.

Can definitely tell this is going to be a great series to come.

Thank you to the author and publisher for this book on NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.

Helden, was sie sehr sympathisch macht.

Peregrine Quinn and the Cosmic Realm by Ash Bond is the first in the new series of books starring Peregrine and her gang of unlikely allies. If the series is as thrilling as this first adventure, then young readers are in for a treat.
While Peregrine’s mother is away, she is looked after by her godfather Daedalus Bloom. She has always envied his life as an immortal and wishes she could go to the Cosmic Realm with him. Little does she suspect that not only will she get that opportunity before long, but it will be up to Peregrine and a few new friends, to save both the Terran (human) and the Cosmic realms from being destroyed by the return of an ancient evil. Not quite the adventure she had expected!
This is such a good read. Within the same genre the Artemis Fowl and Percy Jackson books feature brave and adventurous girls, but the main characters are boys. In this book it is Peregrine and her new friend Rowan, a dryad, who lead the mission to rescue Daedalus when he is kidnapped, and to save the worlds from destruction.
There is a lot to enjoy in this new series, and new young readers will be able to identify with the main characters. Not by venturing into new realms of course, but feeling scared at times, or overwhelmed, lost and afraid. On the flip side, the real sense of accomplishment and pride when something you have strived for is achieved.
I really enjoyed Peregrine as a character. She is feisty and fiercely loyal to her godfather. At the same time though she misses her Mum and often wonders where she is. She often draws on her memories of her Mum to give her strength when she finds herself in trouble. I really hope we find out more about Peregrine’s Mum in future books as she sounds a fascinating character in her own right. Where is she and why are so many people in awe of her? Is Peregrine really a Terran or does she have immortal blood?
The book is well written with good character development. Both Peregrine and Rowan learn things about themselves and each other by the end of the book. I really enjoyed Cal the faun and his battle with his nemesis Hansel Pine. For fans of the Greek myths there are plenty of names in the book to recognise.
The cover of the books suggests slightly older than the target audience (9-12 years) and if I’m honest I don’t find the cover very appealing. Perhaps this is a time not to judge a book by its cover. Having said that I am much older than the target audience so younger readers may disagree with me. The illustrations and maps at the beginning and end of the book complement the narrative and add to the overall enjoyment. The chapters alternate between characters and vary in length with some very short, while others are much longer depending on the action.
Overall, a great start to an engaging new series that is sure to find an audience.

Hi, I’m a Middle-Grade Book Reviewer, find me on Instagram @O.TempleLit

I’ve had my eye on this book for a while and when I saw NetGallery had it available for early readers, I leapt at the opportunity! 🥳

Much like her namesake, Peregrine Quinn wants to take flight into the mysterious cosmic world, if only her godfather Daedalus shared her enthusiasm. 😩 Unlike her mortal self, he’s an immortal grand architect of the library system, which houses portals spread across the world since ancient times. 📚🏛️🏺

But when an ancient threat plans to use the libraries to escape and cause havoc, it’s Daedalus she first comes for and he’s kidnapped and held hostage with a lightning bolt on the way to destroy the threat, Daedalus included. ⚡️ With characters like Bernadette (a sentient plant), Cal, (a fawn) and Rowan (a dryad), Peregrine Quinn is determined to save both her godfather and the world before evil takes over. But time is ticking, and if the lightning bolt hits, it’s all over. 🪴 💀

🌈Review:🌈

With the new rebooted series on Disney for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, I am feeling the Greek mythology stories, so this book was hitting the spot. ✨This is a fast-paced adventure novel, packed with magic, fun characters, exciting locations and ‘portals’ (which I hear is in demand for MG)! 💫

This has everything a kid would find exciting, however, if I were to make a small comment - the many POV hops left my ancient brain spinning sometimes. But as the not intended audience, this is no big issue 😉

I wish I found out more about what kind of ‘totally normal human’ Peregrine Quinn is, and why her mother was out of the picture, and who is her father? But I suspect this is just the beginning of a marvellous series, in which all will be revealed in due course. 🙏

I’m excited to see the reaction once this amazing story hits the shelves, and I wish it every success with publication day. 👏

Peregrine Quinn and her godfather Daedalus are on a secretive mission in the world famous Bodleian Library when things start to go very wrong and the portals (one of which they are trying to hack into) shut down, taking all of their guards with them. Peregrine had long listened to Daedalus telling tales of the Cosmic Realm but until this moment, she never imagined they were real. Her reality is tipped on its head as Daedalus is kidnapped and Peregrine must race against both time and three of Zeus’s thunderbolts to save him and the Realms. She must depend on her new friends, Rowan, Cal and Nim (who runs Hero Support Services, like a Cosmic version of ‘Q’ from Bond, with a duck!) plus a mystical plant called Bernadette but most of all, she has to depend on herself.

With an Under Under Ground, Glam Passes, CosPad Pros, Grumbugs and more tech than an Apple store could wish for, the magical world building of this amazing debut novel is set against the backdrop of Oxford, libraries and Mount Olympus and mixes action packed adventure with wit and humour (did you know that Zeus has retired and much like Alex from Blur, now runs a goat farm and makes cheese?!). It is the perfect combination of mythology and futuristic fantasy with vibes of Artemis Fowl combined with Percy Jackson but with a feisty, female lead and a host of strong supporting characters. When you add in a traitor, two scary henchmen and a Goddess of Chaos, the result is totally unputdownable.

Peregrine Quinn is twelve years old & living with her God Father Daedalus Bloom in his Plant Healing shop in Oxford, she has always loved the stories he told her about his other life as an Immortal ,but that's all they were just stories , until one day an event changes all that & Peregrine ends up having the adventure of a life time between realms , Ash Bond weaves a fantastic tale that stretches from Oxford to Alexandria with mythology , Fairy Lore all inter-twinned to save the World & most importantly of all Books & Plants sadly the, #NetGalley copy I had been reading expired ( I was ill & couldn't read for several days) so I actually went On Line t, #Amazon.co.uk & bought a physically copy of the Book in order to finish the story. I am now going to pass the book onto my eldest granddaughter & her half siblings to read & then in turn they will pass it on to Cousins or friends from School so hopefully the physical Book will become well read & loved. #GoodReads, #Instagram, #FB, #200 Book Reviews,#Reviews Published, #Professional Reader.

When the portals that connect the Terram Realm and the Cosmic Realm mysteriously shut down, the only person who can fix them is Daedalus, the original Master Architect. Daedalus, however, has been kidnapped, so it is left to his god-daughter Peregrine Quinn. She had always loved the stories told to her by her God-father but as she is drawn deeper into an adventure to fix the portals, she soon learns that they are not stories but real. Together with help from dryad librarian Rowan Strong, Olympus Inc. liaison (and faun) Callimachus Thorn, and Bernadett a plant with special powers, she is thrust into an exciting adventure to fix the portals and rescue Daedalus before an ancient evil takes over and destroys everything.
I wasn’t sure who the book was aimed at. I initially though teenagers but I’m not sure how much it would appeal. It is too complicated for younger readers and I struggled at times to remember who and what was what. I didn’t find it an addictive page turner but was still a pleasant story. I feel the author lives deep within this fantasy world she has created but that some of it gets lost in her writing.

The first four chapters sees the point of view switch between the title character Peregrine Quinn (who has been brought up on the stories of her godfather Daedalus Bloom and his life as an immortal), Rowan Strong (a Dryad librarian who - amongst other things - has to keep Peregrine's liking for shiny weaponry in check) and Cal(limachus Thorn, a faun who is a liaison for something called Olympus Inc.). Between them, the trio will go on to be tasked with fixing the portals connecting the Terran Realm (where Peregrine lives) with the Cosmic Realm when a) they mysteriously shut down and b) the only one who can fix them - Bloom - is kidnapped, taking on the creatures from Bloom's stories in the process.

A fast-paced fantasy rooted in the real world, with familiar locations such as the streets of Oxford as well as the London riverways and underground, the regular narrative changes can be difficult to keep up with whilst reading, but are signposted with a name and location to start each chapter, while the mixture of herbs with traditional magic may also interest those who like stories with a botanical theme.

This is a lively YA tale full of funny characters and adventures!
Peregrine lives under the care of her godfather Daedalus as her mother travels for work. He is an immortal, and has lots of stories to tell about The Realms, and the magical characters living within them.
One day at school a faun man appears in the playground. Peregrine can see it through the window, as can all the other children. She goes outside as it’s obvious they are waiting for her!. Cal is a hologram from csi headquarters and tells Peregrine that all the Realms have stopped working and trapped all the guardian librarians inside. Except for one. Her name is Rowan the nymph, and she’s gone to get Daedalus’s help. They then witness Daedalus being kidnapped by two Bogbrethren and they are about to shoot Rowan. Peregrine runs away with Roman and Cal, as the bogbrethren give chase.
So the adventure carries on… They must rescue Daedalus, and get the Realms working again.
Many thanks to Bonnier Books for the opportunity to read this arc copy for review consideration via Netgalley. My opinion is my own.

This is the first of a proposed series of books in the fairly new sub-genre of children's books dealing with a magical world of special powers and incredible danger running alongside our normal contemporary world and hidden from normal oblivious people.

The characters are interesting, dynamic and mostly relatable. It is clear this novel has had a lot of time spent on it to ensure its integrity and consistency provides a solid foundation of world-building for a series. The writing is smooth and easy to read though not simplistic. Some of the concepts and terminology are difficult to grasp at first but the pace ensures the interest of the reader is maintained whilst the ideas settle in. This is certainly a better approach than a didactic explanation.

I enjoyed the structure of the book too. The main characters appear in a gallery on the frontispiece. There are a couple of useful diagrams at the front and another at the end of the book.each of the 44 chapters begins by naming the character who will provide the viewpoint, together with the location and date of the episode. These headings are very useful, paricularly when picking up the book again after a break.

A lovely start to this exciting new series for children (and the occasional adult)
The heroine is Peregrine, a 12 year old girl who follows her godfather into an alternate realm to save him and ends up having to save everyone!
It's got some great characters including Bernadette the sentient plant, Cal the sweaty faun, and librarian and portal protector Rowan who is a Dryad.
It's filled with magic peopled with mythical characters, many of whom you'll have heard of before, making it feel instantly familiar and easy to connect with
What I like is it doesn't try TOO hard to be overtly PC as so many kids books do these days. It's nicely paced and a page turner and it was just really fun to read. In some plces especially at the start I felt there was a touch too much dialogue, explanations, and telling rather than action and showing. But once I got past those couple of parts I was swept away by a very engaging story which is sure to be a huge hit. I am eager to read the second part of this planned series.

This story contains elements of adventure, courage and fantasy.

Peregrine Quinn longs for adventure and hopes to travel via portals to different realms.

When Peregrine's godfather Daedalus Bloom gets kidnapped and the portals that connect the Terran Realm with the Cosmic Realm shut down. He is the only one who can fix it so she must rescue him with the help of her allies, dryad librarian Rowan Strong and Olympus Inc. liaison, Callimachus Thorn.

Together they are unstoppable and form an unlikely alliance to succeed in their quest.

I found the front cover and the synopsis interesting. The author has done a fantastic job in describing the characters and setting. I like how each chapter focuses on a central character.

At the front cover, there are colourful illustrations of the characters in the story.

I also like how the story is partly set in London.

This would be a fantastic read for younger readerswho love to read about adventure and magic.

This is A fantastic story; it has gods, humour, HekTek and friendship!
And Peregrine Quinn is about to get all the Cosmic Realm adventure she can handle with the help of a fawn, a dryad and Bernadette - a sentient plant, and also when she sets out to save her uncle, Daedalus Bloom from the most sinister forces threatening the realms, it gets interesting.
This is A beautifully executed piece of written material and thoughtout this story that it actually delivers on all fronts. This is why I have recommended the book as A must read.
Also I would say that Rowan is a dryad librarian, whose job it is to guard one of the cosmic portals. Also Peregrine and Rowan's paths cross on the first page, and their lives become intertwined by events that are happening within the Cosmic Realm - the portals have shut down, and all the librarians (bar Rowan) are trapped.
Cal is a faun, who works at Olympus Inc, the Cosmic Realm Headquarters.
Hekate is the Grand Architect at Olympus Inc, overseeing all of the tech and inventions. Definitely please read this book 📕

Let's get the obvious out of the way first. The cover, and especially the illustration Peregrine on the front cover, is not inspired. I won't go as far as calling it cursed, because it doesn't look as bad as some stuff I've seen hand-painted, but I didn't enjoy looking at it. The inside cover illustrations are actually pretty nice, and I have no clue why the publisher didn't go with something in the same style for the front as well.

The story, while not immediately immersive, is very well put together with some great foreshadowing, intriguing world-building and plenty of mystery. You very much get attached to the characters as time passes, and they go through the various challenges of the mission ahead of them.

I was pleasantly surprised by how distinct the personality of each character was, and how the author was true to their strengths and faults throughout, instead of using archetypal cardboard cutouts to carry the story.

All in all, a decent read, would recommend. Might even come back to the universe to see more of it.

year old Peregrine has grown up on a rich diet of exciting adventure stories featuring strange worlds and fantastical creatures from her Grandfather Daedulus. But she never bargained for the possibility that the stories were real!

Now she finds herself unexpectedly plunged into into an adventure of her own, when she is forced to follow her grandfather into an alternate dimension in order to save the world(s) that Grandfather Daedulus has always had access to and that Peregrine never knew about before...

This is an original story in an otherwise crowded field, which features some very creative characters and creatures - including a sentient plant named Bernadette, a sweaty faun and a Dryad librarian. The storyline is gripping and effortlessly holds the reader's interest. Definitely worth checking out if you are looking for an entertaining read.

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

This book is aimed at 9 to 14 years old but I think it would be liked by children above that age or even adults, I quite enjoyed it.
My nephew and I read it together, he is 11 and he throughly enjoyed it, even asked if there would be others.
This is the first book out of a set of three.
I found the maps in it were quite useful as it does go quickly from one place to another and the illustrations of the characters were wonderful.
Daedalus Bloom run a florist but not just any florist, this one was for sick plants, one of them called Bernadette was an extremely special one who needed a lot of care and a song being sang to her twice a day.
One day his Goddaughter Peregrine Quinn saw him packing, he was leaving for a short while to sort something out, Peregrine was not happy about this but as it turned out he was kidnapped, it was her job to find him in the cosmic realm and that was when the adventure began.

The debut middle–grade Mythological portal adventure of 2024 that you don’t want to miss

A new middle grade portal adventure that all Percy Jackson fans are sure to fall head over heels in love with.
Suitable for 9+ readers and everyone else

Non spoilery review ⬇️

Peregrine Quinn has always loved the stories that her godfather Daedalus Bloom tells her of his life being an immortal. And that was all they were–stories. That is until a portal shuts down. And her godfather is the only one who can fix it, is also mysteriously kidnapped.
The action starts right at the beginning of the book. We meet new characters along the way and find out more about Daedalus and Peregrine.
I absolutely loved learning about all things mythological and can’t wait for other middle grade readers to discover this book so I can have someone to talk about it with

I loved this book and so did my 12 yo daughter. The whole premise of the story made it very exciting to read and the multiple perspectives from the different characters kept us hooked. We loved the secret portals hidden in libraries and we always love a book with a strong female lead. The characters in the book are brilliant. Peregrine’s godfather Daedalus is one of my favourites! We also loved all the Greek mythology and Zeus made us laugh. Peregrine suddenly has to rely on her new friends when her godfather is kidnapped and the Cosmic Realm - a place she believed was made up - suddenly becomes very real. Peregrine has to rescue her uncle, assuming she can find him, because only he can fix the glitch between realms. Her journeys through time are incredibly well written and totally believable. The author has done an incredible job of building worlds and spaces we wanted to inhabit too. Sci-fi isn’t our usual choice of genre, but the excellent mix of sci-fi and history was perfect for us.

I very rarely like a hardback book due to the dust cover getting grubby however this may be the first time I actually want to throw it away. The attention to detail just on the cover itself is absolutely gorgeous, there is so much love just for the product itself! Wow.

The books itself is an amazing read, I've have already loaned it to all ten teenagers in the family. The characters and settings are wonderful, the author really does have an amazing ability to build a world that is unlike anything else. The characters are all so rich and well developed, which is something sadly lacking in most YA fiction now.

The story is a magical romp with so many different elements that just make it so unique for even its genre, such as bringing in a plethora of magical and fantastical creatures throughout the story. This is definitely an author I will be keeping an eye our for. And if you are looking to buy a copy, I would definitely suggest splashing out a little more on the hardback!

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were so good and I didn't want to put this down, I was constantly thinking about going back to it when I was at work or out - this is how I determine how good a book is. Although I am not the intended audience group (I am nearly 30) it does not matter, I still loved it and I know the actual intended audience is going to love it too.

The world building was really good. There are a few questions I have but I think these will be explained and answered as the series goes on! It's very nicely paced and the story was very engaging! This is definitely going to be a hit with the younger readers!!!! I can't wait for the rest of the series..hope this book and series does really well!

Also can I just say how much I love the cover???? Unfortunately sometimes I do judge a book by its cover and this did not disappoint!! It's so pretty and appealing.

This book was brilliant! It has the mythology chops to stand up to the likes of Percy Jackson, and police procedural that reminded me of all of my favourite parts of the Artemis Fowl books. Peregrine Quinn is thrown in at the deep end, and must find a way to save a realm that, up until a day earlier, she didn't even know existed! What has her godfather got mixed up in, and what does a pot plant have to do with it all?

I loved the characters in this story, and how it was told from multiple perspectives. It took me far too long to realize that Hazel and Rowans names were because they are dryads! Cal was so loveable, and so wonderfully nervous and lacking in confidence, and Daedalus was just as mysterious as you would expect.

I can't wait to see more of this series, and discover just how much Peregrine hasn't been told that likely would have been good for her to know!

Peregrine Quinn has already been fascinated to hear of her godfather's exciting escapades living life as an immortal.
But that's all she thought they ever were, tall tales told for her amusement.
But then comes the fatal day when the portal gates that connect both realms, the Terran and cosmic inexplicably shut down.
Daedalus is the only one with skills to fix them yet he is kidnapped.
Now it's down to Peregrine and her new friend Cal, a faun to save the day.
So starts an epic adventure through the old town of Oxford, the London River ways and the Under underground.
Between them they have to save Daedalus AND get him to fix the portals before they are locked forever and cosmic travel is at an end.
But something ancient and malevolent is rising so it becomes a race against time.
This was such a fun, quirky read, the faun was brilliant.
I really enjoyed Cal's character.

“Peregrine blinked. She had met a faun, she had run away from lizard men, she had driven a submarine, but somehow it was the duck kicking a teapot that might just break her brain. She closed her eyes, opened them again and gasped. The duck was staring straight at her, its eyes narrowed.”

‘(Rowan) was a Librarian, for Pan’s sake, not a hero! You had to have very specific training for that, and then get committee approval for each heroic act at least a month in advance. There was a system.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this roller-coaster ride through the cosmic realm, with an awesome librarian/dryad/agent and an intrepid twelve year old named Peregrine Quinn. Ash Bond writes with more ingenious creativity that I’ve come across in a long time, and I loved the dry humour peppered throughout the book.

Old libraries and librarians - all that just spoke to my heart! Juxtaposed against CosTech (high tech in the cosmic realm) and various mystical characters this fight of good against evil was simply delightful.

Chuffed that this is going to be an entire series! Can’t wait for the next book already.

9/10 ⭐️
