Many deaths ago, phoenix shifter Dalmon Vecker created the Coven to protect paranormals during the witch hunts. Once again, he is running it instead of being king, or heir, or any of the other roles he’s played to safeguard the secrets he and his brothers keep. Now the Coven, and the paranormal community, are under threat as some witches want to reveal the truth to humans to enable them to seize control.

For Lucian Marwood, getting arrested by the Coven means that he’s safe. For the first time in five years, he can breathe without worrying that the man who’d promised him the world only to take it from him bit by bit will never know the depths of his hate. He doesn’t need the Coven to explain the extent of the damage he did. He knows, and he will tell them everything to make amends.

It's a pity the head spy thinks he’s a liar.

Dalmon may not remember the details of his previous lives, but seeing Lucian stirs something in his soul as if they have crossed paths before. But who he was and what happened isn’t something he has the luxury of investigating if he is going to stop the Shadow Board.

Phoenix Spy is book 1 of the Brothers of Fire series about the royal phoenix shifters of Mont de Leucoy. If you love mm fated mates, past lives, princes, and spies, join the phoenixes.

Brothers of Fire is set in the same world as the Familiar Mates series, but stands alone.

Have you ever picked up a book and got the feeling you were missing a lot of the story, only to realize it was a book 2 or 3? Well that's how I felt when was reading this book, except I know it is a book 1. I kept looking for a prequel story, but I didn't see one either. And this could have just been me, but having the feeling I was missing something kept me out of the story a bit.

There is not a lot of action in this book. So if you are thinking there will be lots of spy type stuff, you will be disappointed. The majority of the book is the two MCs sitting in some room somewhere talking, or you are reading their inner monologue. There is a bit of action in the last quater-ish of the book, but even that is short lived.

Good writing, story flows well, just was a little boring for me.

The book takes us into a world full of shapeshifters, witches and intrigue.

Dalmon created the Coven several centuries ago, a political entity to help supernatural beings. He has to face the Shadow Board, which from the shadows tries to reveal to the world the existence of these supernatural beings to dominate humanity.

The story begins with the arrest of Lucian, as an accomplice of a criminal who threatened the supernatural beings. But Lucian hated to collaborate with the criminal. After his arrest, he begins to collaborate with the Coven and Dalmon in their fight against the Shadow Board.

It is a story of fates mates that ends with an original twist.

The only problem I see with the book is that there is too much information at the beginning and it can be a bit confusing, but otherwise it is a great read.

Phoenix Spy is the first book in the new Brothers of Fire series by T.J. Nichols. The series is the third one set in the author’s Familiar Mates world, including the Familiar Mates and Outcast Pack series. The blurb for this book indicates that this series can stand alone, but I am not sure I agree. While this series provides new characters and a really interesting new direction, this story very directly spins off of the Familiar Mates series book, The Spy’s Familiar. There we get the story of the Coven investigating Hastings, the man who is using and controlling Lucian. It focuses on the investigation into Hastings’ crimes, as well as building the case against the Shadow Board. So while Lucian doesn’t play a major role there, the set up for this story happens in the other book. Phoenix Spy is the first book in the new Brothers of Fire series by T.J. Nichols. The story wraps up for Lucian and Dalmon, but there are some larger series arcs that look to carry into future books. I really love the idea behind this spin-off series and am very much looking forward to seeing how things develop as it continues.

Phoenix Spy is the first book in the Brothers of Fire series, which is a spin-off from the Familiar Mates series. It's a fantastic new start for new characters and it really begins with a bang.

NOTE ON READING ORDER

While the Outcast Pack – another spin-off from the Familiar Mates series – was suitable to read as a standalone series, I would definitely say this is *not*. The story here, in the first book of the new series, picks up almost exactly where Familiar Mates Book 11: The Spy's Familiar, left off. You WILL need to read that book first, if you haven't already. There is a lot of very intense, complex information and plot points that you won't understand without reading that book first.

However, if you want to really understand the situation between the Coven and the Shadow Board, I HIGHLY recommend reading the entire Familiar Mates series in order 1-9.5. Then pause to read the Outcast Pack books 1-6 and come back to Familiar Mates to read 10-11. That way you're reading them in (mostly) chronological order as to how and when the main events take place, and you get the full picture. Some of the early Familiar Mates books *can* be read as standalone stories, but the Shadow Board plotline links most of them and definitely Books 1, 8 and 10-11 have a DIRECT bearing on the events and characters that feature in the Brothers of Fire books, in that the Brothers of Fire takes the task of bringing the Shadow Board down more seriously, with a more intense focus.

~

The world-building – from Familiar Mates to Outcast Pack now to Brothers of Fire – has always been fantastic in this shared world, with each spin-off or book adding more to the existing layers. This book is no different. Here, we get a new power – a finder – that is so intensely interesting and rare, so special and intriguing that it was such a clever plot device. There's also great tech advancement that was super intriguing and useful throughout, in a way that didn't feel outlandish or contrived just to be a benefit to the plot.

The thought of a “soul bruise” was genius and I loved not only the term but it was explored throughout the story. It felt so fitting for what the MC's went through.

Dalmon and Lucian are interesting main characters and they actually come together really well. I love how they balance each other out, while also feeling like the perfect fit. Dalmon is serious, composed and in charge, running the Coven and his family, while Lucian is young, afraid of getting hurt again after being used and manipulated by his ex. He's also dealing with a lot emotionally: a recent escape/rescue, new feelings, a blossoming power that he's not used to and can't control. There is a lot going on between them. Worse, when they meet, Dalmon discovers that they've known each other before in a previous life and it didn't end well.

I can't say much about the main plot because there is a whole lot that could come across as spoilers, but I loved the two MC's together and individually. They both had such great depth and growth throughout the novel. I loved getting snippets of Dalmon's family. I see Gerrit is next, which is awesome, and I'm hoping that Kaine and Everest also get books.

Were there problems? There were very minor editing issues for an ARC, which is what I'm used to with Nichols. They do an incredible job with all their books and I'm sure the few I noticed will be resolved before publishing. There was only one problem I had and it was that Dalmon and Lucian's past – 400 years ago – was such a huge plot point for a lot of the book, but we never really got to find out what it was all about. We got one sentence that implied a big thing, but never actually explained it further. I see there is a bonus short, so I'm hoping that might fill in the blanks, but in a way I also feel like it should have been included here, either with them reading the story in Dalmon's diary or in a flashback. It just would have cleaned up that ending a little, to the point where I wasn't left with this huge question hanging over their heads.

Will I be reading more? You bet your butt I will.

First of all, I thought this story was really great. I am choosing to be vague plot wise because honesty there's so much information to absorb and I figured it was needed as the foundation to build this new series/universe. With that being said the story was captivating, it has paranormal, fated mates and consequences....I found myself engrossed in this world and relationship so easily and I'm so excited for what's next in this series. I would most definitely recommend.

First, let me say that I loved this book. I adore the Outcast Pack and Familiar Mates series by TJ Nichols, so of course Brothers of Fire was going to be a no-brainer for me. That said, let me also say that parts of the beginning of this story confused me. I felt like I was meant to understand more about phoenixes and their kingdom than I was given on the page. Is that because I forgot things from the last last Familiar Mates book? Who knows. But I'll own that some of the background/info dump/whatever-you-want-to-call-it didn't make connections for me on this first read through (however, I am now sort of committed to rereading all the related series in order and then, I bet, it'll click). To some degree, I also feel like anyone jumping into this series without reading the others will be seriously missing out. The Shadow Board and everything with the Coven really needs the slow reveal of more than just this book.

Lucian was easy to like. His guilt and vulnerability spoke to me from the very beginning. His magic was fascinating--both in practice and in description. I'd have happily spent more than one book with him as a main character. Dalmon, though, while I get why he acted the way he did... I had a harder time liking. And the whole previous-life-conflict had so much potential but in the end felt a little contrived. In fact, the whole ending felt like a neat bow was wrapped around a package wherein we didn't get to see the action that led there. Like...the party Everest was at? Suddenly the Coven just has evidence and everything is fine? Maybe I understood it wrong--either way, I'm positive it'll be addressed in the next book.

In the end, this was a fantastic story that hit my feels and kept me turning pages. I can't wait to see where the series takes us.

It says that you don’t have to read the familiar mates books first but I would recommend reading them. I didn’t and there are a couple times where I felt like I was missing part of the story. Otherwise it’s a decent read.

This definitely is not a stand alone! The world building is already fully established in the previous series’. Otherwise, it was okay. Simply not enough to entice me to read all the previous books.

This book had promise, but the last 15 percent ruined it. This book was great and enjoyable to read up until Lucian got kidnapped and then it went downhill, and it went downhill fast!
So many questions weren't answered and on top of that, I found the ending very, very disappointing.

Spoilers below

I figured out who the mole was pretty early on. But I wanted to know what the end of the story was. I wanted to know why Lucian was in the library 4 centuries before, I wanted to know if he was going to keep his magic. I wanted to know how his magic was going to help find the missing brother. I wanted to know what the board members wanted. I wanted to know all of that.

Out of all of that the only thing that was answered was if he was gonna keep his magic and what happened in the library four centuriest before; both answers were disappointing.

After Lucian got kidnapped, you might as well just close the book after that point because nothing else of interest happens and what does happens is a mad dash to the end without tying up loose ends or explaining anything! Lucian gives up his magic under some stupid pretense that he doesn't want Dalmon to die when he does.

Umm, but he'll come back and when he has his powers, when he reincarnated his finder powers will seek his mate. So why would you give up your powers Without finding out the good it can do and knowing that when you die, that's it. Kind of stupid.

We don't know what happens to Andrea after he's rescued cause once Lucian is rescued, everything after is just an after thought.
We hear that they collected info to bring down the board...what info? Then random names are spit out. Random board members who are at the top. But who are these people? People we should have known about in the beginning or middle of the book, not just random names and positions at the end.

The premise behind the book, which is of a family of brothers, all shifter phoenix, who die and come back within the same family of royalty...sounds promising, but When you think about it, it's not well-thought-out because the entire world thinks they're fire witches, but only they know that they are shifters. When they die, they come back as an egg in a random spot and their rebirth is not automatic and requires another phoenix to start the process.. so confusing. When you're thinking about it, it's confusing, when you say it, it's confusing, when you read it. It's confusing so I don't understand how or why the author's editor didnt look at it and think, okay, you need to come up with a better way of explaining this to make it make sense.

They even marry to have a cover story to explain the waking up or rebirth...but this is kept to only them,
Well, how do they explain it to their wives? Because they don't tell their wives or their husbands the story so I... it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but at first it was interesting. If you didn't think about this too hard. But then the story just gets weirder and then it runs off on a tangent, kind of like this review. In the end, this book was like when you're trying to make a point and you start saying things to build up to your point but then you lose your train of thought, and everything else said after you lose your train of thought is garbage.

While there are a lot of unusual and interesting things here, I found the narrative to be rather depressing. I never felt uplifted or happy nor did I sense that any of the characters did either. Even at the end, the MCs are both in emotional pain despite the HEA.

The world building here is very good and rather different. While there are shifters and witches, there is also royalty unrelated to the paranormal world but it’s an urban fantasy. It’s basically the British monarchy. The shifters and witches are at odds and it sounds like they’re almost on the verge of revolution.

I have mixed feelings about the narrator, Roberto Scarloto. He occasionally had a slightly different voice for a person but usually the characters sounded the same, only some differentiated by accent. His British accent was mediocre, the Australian one quite good, but the French one was terrible.

Phoenix Spy is the first book in a new series Brothers of Fire and overlaps with the end of The Spy’s Familiar from the Familiar Mates series. Dalmon Vecker is head of the Coven to protect paranormals. He in fact set up the Coven centuries ago, being an immortal phoenix shifter. He is currently involved in identifying members of the Shadow Board who want to control the shifters and the humans in the UK. This brings him into contact with Lucian Marwood who was captured during the raid / rescue at the end of the Spy’s Familiar. Lucian was Hank Hastings’ PA and is also a witch. He is responsible for finding the shifters Hastings used and killed. He is also one of Hastings’ victims due to how he was manipulated and used.

The story follows the interrogation and possible rehabilitation of Lucian. This is complicated by the attraction Dalmon feels for Lucian and the history between them that is uncovered. Complicated as Dalmon needs to destroy the Shadow Board and that ‘project’ needs his full attention.

This is an interesting take on the fated mate scenario where the consequences of denying the mating bond echoes through the lives, past and present, of the fated pair. By the end of this book a lot of the pieces are coming into place for the confrontation between the Coven and the Shadow Board. It works as the first book in a series but the reading experience is improved by having read ’The Billionaire’s Familiar’, ‘The Bodyguard’s Familiar’ and ‘The Spy’s Familiar’ from the the Familair’s Mate series. All of which are equally good reads. I am looking forward to the next in the series!

This series stands alone but is an off shoot of the Familiar Mates series and Phoenix Fire is Book #1.
Tales of phoenixes are familiar to some people. BUT what about a family of phoenixes that have survived for centuries only to find the loves and then die forgetting their loves. This story involves so much tragedy for all involved. An unending cycle of life, love, death, and rediscovery. Here we are introduced to Dalmon, creator of the Coven that protects paranormals from The Shadow Board which consists of witch hunts and witch threats that want to expose the truth about paranormals. The reader is first introduced to Lucian Marwood a witch imprisoned for five years by the ambitious witch Hank Hastings who has coerced and manipulated Lucian into luring unsuspected paranormals to their deaths. But now Dalmon has found Hank's location and leads his group to rescuing survivors and capturing a willing Lucian who only sees capture as his salvation from Hank. When Dalmont and Lucian come face-to-face a glimmer of recognition is felt by each but neither knows why. Thus, this spinning tale begins of living, loving, dying, and reincarnating but without any recollection of previous relationships. For this reader this was a fascinating theme that held my interest and has me looking forward to more books in this series. This is my voluntary review for the ARC I received for my honest opinion.

I was intrigued by the phoenix shifters in this universe when they first appeared in The Spy’s Familiar, and am thrilled they’re getting their own series. Dalmon and Lucian’s book had me turning pages, needing to know what happened next. I particularly love the world building and phoenix mythos. I’m hooked and this is another one of the author’s series I’ll be collecting in paper.

I love how Dalmon and his ‘brothers’ take on different roles with each new ‘life’, and how they work together to keep themselves and their secret safe, as well as their country. The connection between Dalmon and Lucian across previous lives was nicely done, and I liked that the fated mate trope didn’t pan out exactly how I thought it would. I liked how Dalmon’s story connects with the formation of the Coven too.

Lucian totally deserves his HEA, after everything he’s been through. I loved his ability, and the details about how it works. I enjoyed his and Dalmon’s connection, and the progression of their relationship.

I also enjoyed seeing Everest again, and meeting the rest of their family. I’m always happy to see Sam too, and I loved that this series takes place in the same world as the Familiar Mates and Outcast Pack series.

I loved the action/drama part of the story and how that connects to the Shadow Board stories in previous Familiar Mates stories.

Already looking forward to more.

This is another spin-off from the "Familiar Mates" series & I think it was even better. Even though it's not necessary to read any of those in that series first, I would suggest reading "The Spy's Familiar" as we meet some of the players in this book & set's thing up. But if it was me, I would read both the "Familiar Mates" series & the "Outcast Pack" series as they are both really good series. Lucian was a sweetheart & it is killing him what Hastings made him do. All he wants to do is make it right. Dalmon has closed himself off from love since something happened to him several lifetime's ago with his mate & that has shaped him into the person he is now. He realizes rather quickly that Lucian is his mate. Dalmon is afraid to make the same mistake he made last time as well as truly trusting him for what he did. I loved watching them get to know each other & letting the bond strengthen. I really want to say more about everything, but I do not want to give away any spoilers. I do recommend picking this on asap. My only real complaint was that we didn't find out more about what really happened between the centuries ago. I would have liked that to have been fleshed out more. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest opinion.

Shifters? Yes! Phoenixes? Even better! Fated Mates? OMG. This story included so many topics I love and it was so good. The changing familial relationships because of past lives was a bit confusing but I didn’t worry about the details, as it was background info and not central to the current story. I felt sympathetic towards Lucien…there were heartbreaking reasons why he felt he was nothing to Dalmon and he doesn’t understand all of them. And why is Dalmon so cold?

There is some heat in the story, but the story mainly concerns the particular task Lucien has to perform for the Coven to atone for his crimes, and the yearning of fated mates for each other. The ending is everything I would have hoped for, questions answered, they accept each other’s choices, and an HEA.

I don’t normally bother reading extra epilogues (the ones you get when you sign up to an author’s newsletter), but I was so keen to see what happened after the HEA, that I did, and believe me, it was the icing on the cake. So satisfying. I’m now waiting with great anticipation for the next in the series.
So glad I read this book and will be looking for more books from this author (this was the first book from this author that I've read).

I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book for free and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Phoenix Spy by TJ Nichols is the start of their new series, Brothers of Fire. For almost the first time for me reading their books, one of the main characters, Lucian, did not appeal to me in the beginning. Even though he was the victim of the real bad guy, it took me longer to forgive his transgressions than it did Dalmon, the phoenix shifter and eponymous spy. While this series is a spinoff to their Fated Mates series, it was beneficial for me to have read the previous series, as there is some overlap of characters. However, the book can stand on its own. The mystery of the Shadow Board and its impact on the Coven, which Dalmon is heading up in this life, is skillfully handled, with an ending I did not see coming. Lucian has some difficult decisions to make once he is accepted by the Coven members as not culpable for what happened when he was a victim. In between dealing with the bad guys, it was believable to watch both Lucian and Dalmon overcome their prejudices to find happiness as mates. I have a favorite among the phoenix shifter brothers but I think his book will be last. I received an ARC of this book from the author and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Terrific world building with shifters and witches and more

TJ Nichols has set this series in the same world as their Familiar Mates series but it stands alone. It just means that we get more from this interesting earth that has shifters and witches, etc. that ordinary humans don’t know about. I especially enjoyed the character of Lucian who has been used by a bad guy and WANTS to get arrested and actually is at the beginning of the book. This is a big switch up from most books where the bad guy is on the run and gets arrested at the end. He goes through quite the development during the story, both in current situations and with his past as it is revealed. Dalmon as a hidden in plain sight Phoenix shifter who is running the society that controls shifters etc is a very tightly controlled person who I didn’t enjoy as much but that’s mostly just because of the type of character he is.
The whole world that Nichols has developed in the Familiar Mates series and this series is a marvelously rich society with all kinds of creatures and quite a history that is being revealed. I am looking forward to seeing how this develops even more.

Dalmon is a rare Phoenix shifter and head of an agency searching out the bad guys in the supernatural community.

Lucian is a witch and is one the bad guys. Or is he?

And this out story begins. This is a world of past lives and fated mates and how these two come together or come back together is the focus of the plot.

I’m a lover of second chance romance and this both was and wasn’t one. It’s was a very new take on second chance since they don’t actual know what happened in their past (long past) life to rip them apart, but the journey to finding out is glorious.

I would have benefited from having read a few books connected to this one, but there were certainly enough context clues to help me along the way. I do want to go back and read more and I will definitely be reading the rest of this series going forward.

I thought the self flagellation and self doubts could have been dialed back a bit as it kept interrupting things for me and was clearly going to resolve itself in the end.

Overall, I loved it.

As a phoenix, Dalmon Vecker has lived many lives. During one of those, he created the Coven, which he is running during his current life. The Coven is now under attack by the Shadow Board. He decides to enlist the help of Lucian Marwood, a witch recently captured during a raid. His ability as a finder is just what Dalmon needs. He does not help that he feels an attraction to Lucian. Dalmon needs to be focused to take down the Shadow Board.

It was a little confusing in the beginning but explanations took care of that. Dalmon and Lucian are both interesting heroes. Dalmon is generally focused only on work. In fact, he often considered to be an all-work kind of guy. Now he is finding Lucian very distracting. Lucian in many ways was a victim of Hank Hastings. He was used and manipulated for his abilities and wants nothing to do with that. The end was intriguing and will lead into the next book. I am looking forward to so much more in this series.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book and voluntarily reviewed it to my pleasure. The opinions are my own.

A thrilling and captivating book set in a mysterious world where witches and shifters are living undetected within the human society.
The romance between Dalmon and Lucian is coming alive while they are hunting down a paranormal organisation which wants to change society towards a world where witches are ruling.
The two main characters get to know each other and find out they are fated mates from a previous life.
I actually liked both characters a lot and loved to see their spirits work together, encountering some danger as well as some steamy moments. For me personally I was a bit sad about a certain decision Lucian made towards the end. But well, it is a happy end anyways, even when the end was a bit sudden. We follow certain mysteries through the whole book and then in the end it is solved in just one sentence, which might leave some readers unsatisfied.
Anyhow it is a very intriguing world with great characters and some steamy love. I could barely put the book aside and definitely need to read Gerrit's story (Dalmon's brother) as soon as possible.

I really waffled on 1.5 rounding up or down, but the thing of this is that Nichols provides a lot of really interesting worldbuilding pieces but doesn't really put them together. Some of this is pure editing, and this needs one. There are typographical errors, slipshod continuity mistakes, and repetitive descriptors. It was also hard to tell when we were switching points of view, largely because Nichols doesn't seem to believe in pronoun antecedents and when everyone is "he" it gets harder to tell who is the subject of the sentence.

But some of it is also storytelling. We are introduced to Dalmon (why are romance novels so bonkers about names, why) who is a phoenix and leads a group called the Coven. He's also a prince, which ends up giving the main relationship some incredibly weird "Princess Diaries" vibes that just threw the whole tenor of that for me, especially because "he's royalty" seemed to be way more plot mover than worldbuilding, not a deus ex machina but definitely Handy Prop for Everything.

Dalmon is the head spy of the coven. He is also a Phoenix sfifter.

There is currently a danger posed to the shifter community. The coven must find somebody that can keep them Safe from outwardly forces.

The author has created a story around gay Phoenix shifters who's role is to protect the supernatural population from causing or suffering harm at the hands of other non Supernatural beings such as humans and the like.

Lucian is a Phoenix gay shifter also who has lived a romantic relationship with a Human for sometime but wishes to come home. Having been "undercover" so to say, for that time period, he has information that can help the current administration responsible of Supernatural shifter's safety and security.

The author has created a cloak and dagger story on an already exploited subject about tensions between Humans and Supernaturals. The plot is relatively good and the story well written, but this reader found the book long to read and had to skip too many pages that were , in my opinion, non-essential to the overall story.
I rate this book with 3 Stars.

The phoenix shifter is fascinating to me and especially so in this story. Dalmon has lived many lives as a phoenix shifter and he created the Coven in one of those incarnations and in his current one he is trying to protect it from the Shadow Board that is attacking it. Dalmon is a serious guy who is about his work and task except as it relates to Lucian. That is complicated as Lucian draws him for good reason. They do have a complicated and messy history from previous lives. In this one they need to try to figure some things out. They are tasked to deal with the business of protecting the Coven and their personal business. I don't want to describe too much and spoil this but as usual the author weaves an engaging tale that draws you in and makes you want to read more. I am waiting for the next book and I just finished this one.

This is a great opposites attract, medium-angst romantic suspense. Dalmon is an immortal prince in a small European kingdom and a phoenix shifter who rediscovers his fated mate, Lucian, an untrained witch. They meet in the course of an investigation into an organization that is trying to upset the balance of power in the world to the distinct disadvantage of all shifters, but especially phoenixes, which are a rare breed. The situation is awkward for many reasons, and their mating seems impossible, given the circumstances under which they meet again. The writer does a really good job of establishing the world in which they live and the complications that discovering their situation brings not just to the case but also to their lives. I appreciated the way they proceed with caution, despite the overwhelming urge to mate that they both endure for a time. I also like the idea of the powerful, immortal phoenix being the witch's familiar.

Phoenix Spy by TJ Nichols is the first book in the Brother’s of Fire series. I really loved the start in this story. It has action, adventure, and lots of love. I love this author and their ability to spin a tale I cannot put down and this book is no exception.
Dalmon: Phoenix shifter. He created a coven to protect Paranormals. He ended up running it. He is protective, kind, and no one you would want to meet in a fight.
Lucian: He has been arrested by the coven. He is sure he is going to die. He welcomes death. He has been used and abused. Doesn’t like being a witch. He needs someone to help him want to live again.
The first part of this book is a hard read. Lucian is a damaged character. But I found getting into his mindset essential for this story to work. I like how my feelings on the characters have come full circle too.
Overall a heavy but great read. I cannot wait to see where this series goes next/

Did you ever read a book and just have to sit and let it all sink in before you could write how it rocked your world? I loved the story of Lucian, a witch who was used and abused by another witch and Dalmon, the head of the Coven and his fated mate. This series has been just wonderful, and I can’t wait until the next story. Lucian feels guilty of his nefarious activities before being caught and he will do just about anything to make amends. Dalmon recognizes what Lucian is to him from his previous life and the attraction just builds. Having to deal with taking down the Shadow Board took up most of his time and having a mate added a complication that was unexpected. I guarantee that you will love this book and all the books in the series. Highly recommend you dive into the lives of the Coven and the shifters and witches that keep the paranormal secret from the human world.

Trust once lost is hard to earn back, but worth the effort! Dalmon, is an immortal Phoenix shifter who created the Coven to protect shifters and witches. In his current lifetime, he is forced to take a hands on approach because of trusted personnel shortages. He took Lucian into custody as an accomplice to a very bad guy. Problem is he feels a pull toward Lucian which he doesn't trust but finds familiar. Lucian, realizes he did wrong for the wrong reasons and was hoodwinked. He wants to remain in Coven custody and hopefully, make restitution. The story is exciting and heart wrenching and warming at the same time. You won't be able to put it down wanting to find out the answers. The brothers seem fun and the world, is a bit exciting. I look forward to reading more of the series. Well done! So, the Familiar mates series is a bit of a hit-and-miss for me. Therefore, I was a bit wary before I started this as I also had not read the last books in that series.

But my misgivings were totally unfounded. I loved this one.

This is a different take on second chance romance, and I thought it was well really done.

Although they are fated mates, it takes time for them to find to each other.

So why only 4,5 stars? Because unfortunately at the end, I felt unsatisfied as it was too short, and we didn't get to see how they found "their" solution.
Unfortunately, TJ Nichols has the tendency to rush the ending, and it is done here too - although here on a smaller scale.

I loved the bonus epilogue, which brought a smile to my face .
I am looking forward to the next book

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Dalmon and Lucian story brings us another wonder spin on the Familiar Mate world. It like Lucian jumped out of the pan, even knowing he only to head straight to the fire. We get Dalmon's phoenix fiery fury. Was Dalmon being to guarded!?! Even finding out the reasoning for why would Lucian be relieved for the Coven's arrest. Was Lucian willing to forfeit his magic?
The heat that was building between them was a battle that fate wasn't having. Only fighting the pull was  getting harder but once the magic that was the connectio
n was gone they would have a whole new complications.
