A Whole New League

Rate this book
The star quarterback dating a theater geek like me? As if anyone would believe that.

If Brian Kirkland is the reigning king of the jocks, I guess that makes me the queen of the drama department. Hard to believe we were ever best friends. These days we go to great lengths to ignore one another.

But when Brian's latest diva girlfriend convinces him to try out for my play, there's no way to avoid him. I try to keep it professional, but years of anger and resentment are hard to dismiss. It doesn't help that he's just as cocky as I remember. He lives to antagonize me, which is why I'm just as stunned as everyone else when he does something nice. Something...unexpected.

His very public kiss is an act of kindness to save me from humiliation, but it leads the entire school to think that we're dating. Which is just crazy...right?

A Whole New League by Maggie Dallen was exactly what I needed. My cute craving is out of control right now. And THIS! This was a big ball of adorable-ness with 3 of my favorite book addictions. Three!!! We get a falling-for-the-boy-next-door story with dashes of pretending to be dating AND enemies to smooching buddies plot twists and turns! GAH! All three yummy ingredients rolled up into one cute story. What’s not to love about that?

Next door neighbors and former best friends, Alice Kern and Brian Kirkland, were inseparable growing up. They knew everything about each other—from fears to secrets. But their friendship fell apart when Brian joined the football team and made an all-out push for popularity. Alice wanted no part of it! Now years later, Alice is a theater geek, who hides from the spotlight and Brian is the “King jock” of the high school halls with all of the attention. These two have spent years avoiding each other. Until….Brian tries out for the lead in the school play. Alice’s play! Now their separate lives are clashing and mixing in all sorts of fun ways. He’s in her theater world and she’s into…Brian. *Wait* She can’t be into the guy she has been shooting evil eyes at for the last few years? Can she? The show must go on though. Right? Haha….You’ve got to see if the show or Brian and Alice survive!

I loved how this played out. We get to hear from both Brain and Alice—sarcastic, huffy, sweet inner voices and all! And I loved them both. They were hysterical! But not perfect either, which made me happy. Their faults added a sense of realness to the story that brought it all to life for me. Alice is sarcastic and angry, which Brian suddenly finds absolutely adorable. And Brian is a big, sweet-hearted doofus. :D I mean that with love! The way they both slowly begin to open up and see each other again is so cute and funny. Listen to Brian trying to talk himself out of falling for his former bestie….

There was nothing sexy about this moment. Her lips were off limits. I would absolutely stop watching her nibble on her lip and I would definitely stop fantasizing about kissing her again. Any second now, I would totally put an end to this ridiculous fantasy.

“What are you staring at?” she asked.

Yup. Fantasy terminated. I cleared my throat. “Nothing. Sorry. Just…uh…just thinking…” About your lips.

But then add heart into the hilarious moments and you’ve got yourself a true gem! The way these two slowly fall back into old jokes and nicknames and protectiveness made me smile and melt. They know each other up and down, backwards and forwards and it comes out in all sorts of heartfelt moments along the way to the stage and to each other’s hearts.

“I hadn’t realized how badly I’d missed my best friend until I had her back again.”

See! My heart just swooned all over again. Go meet Brian and Alice!

This sweet, sweet story about friendship, second chances, and meeting someone half way made my heart very happy. Hope you check it out.

This was my first Magge Dallen read, but it won’t be my last. Now I know where to turn when my sweet tooth is calling for cuddles, hand holding, and kisses, kisses, and more kisses!

A Whole New League is the second book from the Briarwood High Book series. It is about a football star dating a theater geek. Kind of sounds like that new show Rise right? Plus these two kids are next door neighbors which definitely had me swooning left and right. I love those kind of romance books - mostly because I rarely read them.

Alice, the theater geek, and Brian, the football legend, were former best friends. They just grew up and went their separate ways. Of course, this all happened when Brian turned to football and became super popular. Alice didn't want anything to do with that.

Throughout the years, these two have avoided each other. Well, it was going so well until Brian tries out for the play. Again, doesn't it sound like the show?!?! Or even Glee?!?! Damn, I'm good.

Anyhoo, these two were adorable. I loved how sarcastic they were. Both had a ton of flaws but they were hilarious. Of course I was shipping the hell out of these two because who wouldn't want them together? Friends to enemies to lovers?!? Sign me the hell up!

Overall, I have really enjoyed this series so far. I have no idea if there's another one in the works or if it's already written but if there is, I am so down to read it!

This was such a rollercoaster I´m still not sure where we ended up.
To be honest I would´ve probably skipped like 50% of this book, and even though plot was kind of okay some times. (I´m super enthusiastic about this book as you can see) But I seriously cringed every time there was a sloppy grammar/spelling mistake and there were many, was this even edited??

Real Teenage Voice

This book startled me! Most YA is either written in an angsty sort of way, or an adult sort of way. Neither really bothers me, but A Whole New League really captured a true teenage voice. Alice and Brian, and most of the rest of the characters, were seniors in high school. They didn't act like adults, but at the same time they weren't constantly misunderstanding everything and so freaking moody. They were like real teenagers. Sort of immature and hormone driven, but capable of discussing problems and finding solutions. I absolutely loved it!

4 stars!

Frenemies

Brian Kirkland used to be best friends with Alice Kern, once upon a time. But then he grew muscles, became hot, and an athlete, and he outgrew their friendship. Popularity beat out friendship. Alice prefers to hide behind the scenes. Brian loves to be Centre stage. But when Brian’s ex-girlfriend ditches the play and Brian needs a new leading lady... will Alice finally step out of the shadows and take on the role of a lifetime -both for pretend, and in real-life?

Another great, clean YA romance by Maggie Dallen! Really enjoyed this quick read and looking forward to her new release coming out this month. Highly recommended and suitable for teens and older audiences.

I was drawn in by the premise, but honestly my expectations should have been lower given how cliché the plot was. Stereotypes and clichés aside, though, the book wasn't half bad. I found myself enjoying Alice and Brian's banter and wanting to see how the whole thing played out.

However, the characters were flat in my opinion, especially Hayley, Julian, and Mr. Renner. They lacked any real depth and appeared to only be in the story to stir up conflict for the main characters Brian and Alice. Even the drama that was stirred up lacked any major consequences. I didn't feel like there was enough at stake to get emotionally invested in the story.

Then there was the quality of the writing. I know this is a 144 page read on the Kindle store, but I've read plenty of others on there that are also in the Kindle Unlimited program that don't read as if the author wrote the first draft and declared it the finished version. There were so many instances where any immersion in the story was broken by poor editing.

For example:

“That’s right, I was saving you,” he said.

This is a book set in first person POV, so it was a bit of a scene breaker to suddenly see it switch to third person. Another switch in POV happens in the second paragraph of chapter ten, where Brian refers to his team as 'his team' and not 'my team' or 'the team'.

Several times sentences are missing words too, and some make it obvious the author's train of thought shifted and they'd forgot to clean it up. One such time included a sentence with the words "all of the suddenly". Another example is this sentence where an 'a' was forgotten between 'I' and 'little':

But was I little touched by the fact that he’d rushed to my rescue?

If you can look beyond the poor editing, lack of stakes, and flat characters, the story does have some charm. Brian and Alice's banter can be humorous, and I liked the message of the story about how opposites can not only attract but also be beneficial to us by creating a relationship that balances each other out. I would have liked to have seen more of Alice's friendship with Julian, because what I did see in spots was a refreshing take on a guy-girl friendship. If the characters had have been more fleshed out, I'm sure I would have been rooting for them to be together, despite also thoroughly enjoying the relationship they currently have.

All in all, this book could have done with being fleshed out more, a little longer in length, and undergone a thorough edit by a second pair of eyes. What we have is a quick, mildly satisfying read that is fine for anyone looking to fit in a short book to fill out their reading challenge a bit.

Cute, sweet, refreshing. Even with a familiar formula, this was an enjoyable read.

While the plot is fairly formulaic, the leads are enjoyable to read. And I loved the sense of humor (Brian realizing he does indeed refer to himself by full name, even in his internal monologue, was priceless).

On a deeper note, I really, really like the conclusions the two came to at the end - how they aren't trying to change each other, him into a theater geek or her into a popular kid. It's about how they balanced and enhanced the other instead. Even adults can stand to learn this lesson, and it was really sweet seeing it in action here.

Could have used a bit more proofing/editing. Not enough to make me irritatingly pulled from the story, but it was noticeable from time to time.

Alternating 1st person POV. No cheating, no real love triangle - they're both rebounding when things pick up between them. Minor OW drama, but it's mostly off-screen (OW is mildly passive-aggressive, it seems). Sweet, fluffy, palate-cleansing quick read. A bit of refreshing escapism. HEA and no cliffhanger.

Would I read more in the series? Yes. This isn't the first Briarwood story I've read, and it won't be the last.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. I don't know, but I just didn't really get into it. It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad. The story wasn't too developed.

The characters were a little shallow, and the romance wasn't too interesting. All the other background characters seemed to be in there just to shake things up, with no other apparent purpose. They didn't seem to have much personality to them. Alice was too insecure. I don't mind insecure characters if the author pulls it off well, with the person growing in character as the book goes on. But you only see Alice decide to step out of her comfort zone at the very end—literally, at the VERY end—and there's not really anything to show how things went for them later. Brian was so clueless and sometimes annoying.

I didn't understand how the whole thing between Brian and Alice switched so fast from hating each other to liking each other. I mean, they hate each other and stuff—at least, Alice hated Brian, and Brian didn't really like Alice. Then they have a small fight with each other, and in the middle of it, Brian wants to kiss her? And then Alice starts to have feelings for him? What in the world? Where did that come from? It's like, there just wasn't enough background and story to justify their actions and feelings, and you kind of wondered why they liked each other.

It's not that I detested the book. And maybe I'm a little biased. I usually read short, light romances in between heavier reads without really expecting too much from them. This was that type of book for me. I needed something to listen to as I worked, and it passed the time well enough. I enjoyed some of the banter, but I think this book could have used a lot more story in it. This isn't a book I would read or listen to again.

She was a spinster librarian in a cute teen body.

My hands clenched at my sides. Just give me a reason, jackass. Say one crappy thing to Alice and I’ll slam this fist down your turtleneck-wearing throat.

She had the worst guilty conscience of anyone I’d ever met. (Hey, that's me. I have the worst guilty conscience).

“I auditioned for Hayley,” I agreed. “But I stuck around for you.”

Friends to enemies to lovers, yes please! These two were precious. I love how sarcastic they were. Brain and Alice were completely shippable. They had some very cute swoon worthy moments. They are not perfect, they have their own issues and faults, but I loved reading about that. I love getting both POV. Brain was so incredibly sweet, kind and caring. He was a sweet-hearted doofus which I love. I love Alice, she reminded me of myself with having the worst guilty conscience and not wanting to be in the spotlight. This was a quick, fluffy and fun read. 4.5 stars.

I have practically the same feelings on this one as I did the first book in this standalone series. I thought it was super cute but not totally developed and fleshed out. In real life, their past differences and friendship break up would require much more resolution than love and hate. Not to sound cynical. Also I could have done without some of Brian’s internal thoughts although no one is a perfect human so I can’t really pick that apart. One of the strong points of these books is when Maggie Dallen writes the chemistry. While there might not be a lot of build up, what is there is fantastic. And the romantic climax in this one especially, whew. I’m happy I read and will be continuing with the series of companion novels, they are quick and easy, super fun and happy experiences. Just really, really adorable. 🥰

Ok Maggie Dallen, how do you do it? I thought Out of His League, first in your Briarwood High series was spectacular. I wanted to have been Veronica (Ronnie), it’s leading lady but was and still too much of a klutz, so decided I’d be happy to have the adult Ronnie as a friend. Now in A Whole New League, the series second book, you’ve actually somehow raised the bar. Not in the quality of the story per se, as it’s pretty hard to beat “spectacular” (though this book meets that standard too) but in relatability. Gosh darn it, I WAS Alice - except for the whole hot hunk of a Quarterback boyfriend thing. Hats off to you. Another wonderfully delicious huh school romance. Beautifully written and just loads of fun.

Highly recommended.

Awwwwwwwww!!!

A sweet, friends-to-enemies-to-sweethearts story. I liked how both of the main characters secretly regretted how their friendship had ended but realized that they’d both played a part in it. It wasn’t only one of their faults, like one of them thought. I also liked how they came to realize this and admitted their role, and how they could change it. I also liked how they both supported the other when stepping out of their comfort zones. Even though the story was predictable, it was well-written and the author didn’t fall back on the cliches so many YA books do; there were no mean girl revenge plots, or mean guys playing pranks. It was just a sweet romance between two people who’d grown up together, along with most of the kids around them.

>Book Review – A Whole New League
>I am an independent reviewer. This is the 2nd book in the Briarwood High series and ends with an HEA. Alice and Brian were childhood friends until high school. Brian suddenly became popular and Alice was left behind. When Brian’s popular girlfriend talks him into acting in the school play, he does and comes in to contact once again with Alice, the play manager. Alice and Brian have a lot to hash out about how they grew apart and why. Brian begins to realize how fake popularity can be, while Alice realizes she needs to step out of her comfort zone a bit.
> This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this book 5 stars. I love how these 2 characters decide to meet in the middle. I only wish there were some legitimate football scenes.

It was okaay... I mean, the beginning was kind of hard to get through because there was so much anger and hatred described and I'm not the kind of person that does well with either of those. Sure they got past that and it even became cute towards the end but that was kind of a put off. Usually I the kind of enemies we see are the ones that wanna kill each other (not literally ofcourse) but don't hate each other to the extent of raging anger that they ignore the mere existance of each other. The author has painted excellent characters and it really is just my fault that I don't like or find faults with the character. Alice Kern came across as quite selfish and I didn't like that very much. But Kudos to the author.

Alice never wanted to be popular due due to "the sordid side of rumours, bullies, whispers and gossip and avoids this as a loner whereas Brian, football player likes that he can control the narrative by protecting confidence. Until his girlfriend, Hayley breaks up with him but not before getting him to audition for the school play and being voted Homecoming Queen. When Brian tells Alice, the play manager and his former friend he is quitting the play, their compromise is Alice will mentor him one on one so he can focus on the playoffs and a kiss as Brian tries to save Alice from an awkward moment. I have enjoyed this story with its fast pacing of characters thoughts and dialogue. Its a light read but has the angst of teenagers.

I read this book right after book one (on the same day right after). The characters didn't meet though, even though they were the same age. I was sad. Once again, I felt like the books in the series (or both of the two I've read) suffer from main character isolation, rarely including other people, and then only as very flat characters. While the romance was cute, I really think that these books could be improved if they included more people in them, and were just a bit longer. And definitely in this one, the families could have been there. They were best friends, so their families should've been in the book more. Other than this, I liked 'A Whole New League'. 4.5 stars.

Alice and Brian are next door neighbors and were junior high bff's...then he decided that being popular was more important then their friendship! Now Seniors in high school, he's the popular "King Jock" and she's a theater geek and while they are still neighbors, they haven't spoken to each other since junior high school! Now they are forced to work together on a regular basis because he gets the lead male role in their school play, and Alice despises him even more for it! Can they rekindle their friendship when he helps her out of a jam or is their friendship too far damage to be mended? This is a great read for YA's!

Not really a winner for me. I enjoyed Out of His League, but A Whole New League really kind of just wandered aimlessly until, will you look at that, it's over.

Understandably, I pick up these books when I am in between "heavier" reads for a bit of a break. I don't expect much, but I do hope for a nice light story with decent development. Here, the issue was a quick development that just kept going. And going.

Likely wouldn't recommend, even for just a light read. (Definitely recommend book one. These novels can definitely stand alone. They really only share a setting--Briarwood High.)

Fun and very cute

What started out as a kind of sad book about lost friendship turned out to be a very cute and fun book about rediscovering your best friend - and knowing he is really just as awesome a person as you always knew he could be. Come along with Alice and Bryan as they remember all the best things about each other while they write a brand new future together. You’ll remember your own high school romance and relive that first kiss, your first love, and hope that Alice and Bryan make it.

I really liked this book and the characters Alice & Brian. The author did such a good job describing them that you could see both of them. He was the “King Jock” and she was the “Drama Dweeb”. I loved the way he had that grin and was a sweet guy. He had to put up with a lot from Alice! She had such a sarcastic personality and I could see her rolling her eyes! They are so different but, the chemistry is there! I would definitely recommend this book be put on top of your TBR pile!

Tried the free month trial of kindle. Turns out, there's not much on there - except a whole world of self publishing. After starting several books and quitting them, I settled into a happy bubble gum world of ya high school romance lit. (Clean and happy endings - it was like beach reading on my couch.) It's not something I'm terribly proud of, haha, can't even remember all the titles (they were fast reads). (And some of them were so bad that I quit.) This one alright but I hated the way the main character was so insecure.

Don't think Kindle unlimited is worth paying for.

Let’s see it could be some spoilers depending on how I feel once I am writing this review.

https://ladiikeiii.wordpress.com/2018...

So I am going to start by saying, I am glad this book was short; sometimes I do like and don’t like LONG chapters. I thought Alice and Brian story. They were best friends but split during high school. They were both in the wrong, but realize they cared and missed each other. They fixed their relationship by coming together through “theater.

They had been the very best of friends, right up until high school. He discovered muscles, football and fans, and she felt she had been left behind. He had wanted her to be with him, but she didn't like the spotlight his world revolved around.
Then, he was pushed into her current world, and although he was out of his comfort zone, he was willing to make a go of it.
Off course, there was road blocks, but when they tag teamed, nothing could stop them.
