Struggling with mounting turmoil over his own identity, Allen meets The Cardinal. Who is he? What is he? Why is he interested in Allen? The answers are startling, and arrive with a vision that shocks the young demon fighter to the core!

3.5/5 This series continues to stray further and further into the bizarre and convoluted. It's still enjoyable but I find myself struggling to keep up with what's going on. It is not at all like Volume 1 the characters are so far removed from what they once were and the plot is so different from what I expected. I'm sticking with it since I'm close to being done, or at the very least up to date on the series. I'm vested in these characters and I really enjoy them. They're what keeps me going far more so than that plot. After the events with Yu and Alma in Volume 21 Allen is taken into custody. Another big bad is introduced some questions are answered but more mysteries are added. I have 4 volumes left I really hope we're coming to some closure and more answers but I know the series is still on going and released at a trickle pace, a chapter every 3 months. I should prepare myself for at least minor disappointment but at least so far I'm enjoying the ride.
The Lenalee cover this time around is absolutely gorgeous.
This series has my emotions running all over the place, and that's why I love it. It's not just a "comic book". This series really means something to me.
P.S. Am I the only one who would rather see Lenalee with Bak Chan, rather than Allen or Lavi? I love Allen and Lavi (now), but I know Bak loves her (obsessed with her, actually), but I don't ever see Lenalee acknowledge him. Allen and Lavi are obvious choices, but not the best choices for her, I think.
Reread this volume along with the next 2 and I'm in desperate need of people who also read this cause the pain too much for me alone 🤣 when I started this series I never expected that I'll have existential crises every new volume, but it's so good I can't stop even if it hurts
Ah, this is where things start getting confusing. All right, they already were, but now it's going to be more confusing.
I miss Black Order craziness...
2nd Read: This volume is the end of the Alma Karma arc and starting point of a story arc that lasts through the next few volumes and is still unwinding even as of volume 25 (and probably will be for a while yet). It's a little confusing because we're getting all sorts of questions thrown at us, but not much in the way of answers, even to questions we've been asking before this point. Whether this is the beginning of the final act or more of a "second act" that will lead us into the finale, I'm not sure.
You know ... I've always had a sort of on-off relationship with D. gray man, bug these past few mangas have killed me. So much has happened and it's just ... I don't even know how to describe what I'm feeling right now.
Allen Walker’s disobedience to save Kanda and Alma wasn’t surprising, not to mention touching. Nor was the Order’s reaction and the dismay of Allen’s friends at this reaction. The Noah’s withdrawal was quite curious as was the Earl’s broken-hearted reaction. The Bookmen find themselves called upon for answers whether they like it or not. A monster reveals itself hiding within the Order, a monster who wants Allen’s innocence as much as others want his darkness. Of all the people to show up and rescue Allen, yet I cheered when they did, seeing the pay-off of something complex which has been building.
Such a beautiful end of one arc, showing Kanda at his best. Such hilarious yet scary speeches for the Earl to make to both Allen and the Order. Such mysterious pathos from the Earl, such curious reactions from the Noah. How complex and fascinating Tyki and Road have become as both enemies and allies to Allen. Tyki and Allen come full circle once more in a curious way. Innocence is not a weapon for only the innocent, showing it can be used in some sinister ways. All of this brings Allen to make a heartbreaking resolution, a resolution which changes everything.
Like the last few volumes, this book brings a whole new level of complexity to the storyline, characters, and the artwork. I’m eager for more.
Allen is forced to make a decision when once again faced by an impossible enemy. I really wish they just stuck to the politics of the war rather than making increasingly powerful enemies for them to fight to fill pages.
The big reveal in this book was underwhelming, to be honest. The art is too busy for the most part, but the story actually feels like it's progressing a bit.
This volume of D. Gray-man was nearly as confusing with the last as it seems to sort of wrap up the Alma/Kanda line (but I’m doubting or at least hoping that it’s not the end). The thirds are freaking out and somehow Allen is involved. I have no idea. Literally. Link is forced to seal Allen in fear that the Fourteenth, the Noah inside Allen is awakening. From there it gets more understandable (sort of) with something else coming for Allen and oh, right, the Noah are too and he finds himself the enemy of both the exorcists and his friends. The art has changed radically. While lovely, it doesn’t look like the same mangaka is drawing this. I’m sure I’ll get the next one but if it doesn’t become more sensible, I’m going to be very disappointed. And honestly it’s more like 2.5 stars thanks to all the confusion (and I still hate Lenali’s outfit, just saying.)

I am only half sure of what is going on at this point, but at the very least I'm enjoying the ride. At least we're finally back into the thick of things, and the story is moving at a good pace now. I wish I didn't have the sinking feeling that Hoshino isn't going to explain as many things as I'd like once the series is over - which, honestly, could come in the next five or so volumes, if she wanted to.
I am glad that my local library got a copy, so I went there, took a seat and read it within an hour. I do believe this issue opens a new story arc, after the protagonist (Allen) left the order behind forever. Also this volume introduced a new character that maybe a big antagonist in later chapters.
Oh great! Now the Cardinal is causing problems. Run far away Allen. You are no longer safe in the Order. He has to abandon his friends, run, and fight an internal war with a Noah. I have so much sympathy for Allen. I don't know how I am going to cope with this.
And the art style changed drastically... I'm not sure I love it, but still need some tome to get used to it. Allen chose his own path, the art cover totally doesn't match the content... Road and Nea...
