The Embassy had never been gayer. Everyone loves the prospect of a glittering wedding, and preparations were progressing merrily. Suddenly, the busy excitement turned to dismayed anguish. The little bridesmaid had disappeared! "If she isn't found," cried the bride passionately, "There won't be any wedding for I shan't get married at all!"With at least 332 guests expected, wedding presents laid out, telegrams of congratulations in piles, a banquet prepared, Miss Bianca understands instantly the critical state of affairs, and with her famed resourcefulness and gusto, takes full command of the emergency. So with Bernard offering loyal support, the search for the missing bridesmaid gets speedily under way with not a moment to lose.
Margery Sharp was born Clara Margery Melita Sharp in Salisbury. She spent part of her childhood in Malta.
Sharp wrote 26 novels, 14 children's stories, 4 plays, 2 mysteries and many short stories. She is best known for her series of children's books about a little white mouse named Miss Bianca and her companion, Bernard. Two Disney films have been made based on them, called The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under.
In 1938, she married Major Geoffrey Castle, an aeronautical engineer.
Yet another charming book and story within this series. I adore the way Sharp uses “big” words and describes rather simple (lever and fulcrum) scientific events using the correct wording. I am convinced that exposing children to actual scientific activity will provide them with practical depictions of scientific concepts for easy reference as they officially learn of such facts when older.
Sorry to see there is only one more installment in this series... 😦
3.5 I did enjoy the rather random supernatural element thrown in this one, but while the twist as to where the missing girl was made sense, it wasn’t necessarily the most satisfying explanation.
I really didn't like this one. A little too much supernatural stuff going on, what with the creepy doll casting spells and Miss Bianca have "thought transferences"....I'm sure there could've been a better way Miss Bianca could suggest things to the Ambassadress and such. Didn't she talk to her woman to woman on several occasions? I liked the Boy's confidence in his mouse and all and still found some parts of the tale charming, especially my favorite character, Bernard. But the overall plot just wasn't as great (to me). They went around in circles really (all part of the adventure, I know), but they really had nothing to do with her rescue. Well, except for the fact they helped prevent the little girl getting slapped by the evil cook. And are we really supposed to believe, all those people where looking for this girl and NO ONE noticed her amongst them, or questioned another worker they'd never seen before? Nobody? Really? I'm glad that though this said it was to be the last book, it wasn't, for I know there to be at least two more books in the series, because it would've left it on a real distasteful end for me :/
