Book 6 in the Christian Heritage Series, The Charleston Years. Fighting slavery, Austin is forced by the war to flee to the North. Can he trust in Jesus to protect and preserve him and his mother?
Nancy Rue is the author of over 100 books for adults and teens, including the Christy Award-winning The Reluctant Prophet, Unexpected Dismounts and Healing Waters (with Steve Arterburn), which was the 2009 Women of Faith Novel of the Year. She travels extensively—at times on the back of a Harley—speaking to and teaching groups of women of all ages. Nancy lives on a lake in Tennessee with her Harley-ridin’ husband, Jim, and their two yellow Labs (without whom writing would be difficult).
The end of the Charleston Years. This book is fantastic. Deeply emotional, sad and infuriating all at the same time. Reading this book was an odd experience, as so many of the lines were so burned in my memory that I had them running through my head split seconds before I read them on the page. There are some moments I truly hate (in the best way!) in this book, and it may be one of Rue's finest. Some truly high drama but at the end things come to resolution in the best of ways. Every character gets an ending that somewhat makes sense and redeems them and for that I'm grateful. (Exception of Olivia - a bit saddened that we see no redemption for her, but I suppose I shouldn't have accepted it). Drayton continues to be an utterly fascinating and ultimately sympathetic character, despite his flaws. Quite grateful this series exists and looking forward to reading it again in the future (hopefully with small ones to read it alongside!
1861, Charleston & Canaan Grove, S Carolina. 12 year old Austin loves staying with his cousins while his father, an abolitionist, travels around the country. He loves playing with his cousins and wishes he was more like them instead of "bookish" like his father. The only thing he doesn't like about staying there is that his friend Henry James is a slave. Unlike his cousins, Austin and his immediate family don't approve of slavery. When his uncle threatens to sell Henry James, Austin knows he must help Henry James, but how?
Set just before the beginning of the Civil War (the firing on Fort Sumter takes place toward the end of the book), the story shows how the issues of slavery and states' rights divided families. This book is part of the Christian Heritage Series.
Story of live in Charleston leading up to the attack on Fort Sumter! Austin's goal is to help Henry-James escape to the North, the adult's goal is to get the Hutchinsons out of South Carolina before the war breaks out!
