This book is not something that I would typically pick up to read as one of my first choices but I thought I would give it a look. I am intrigued on learning on how to help improve myself and my relationship all the time. Not to say that I have a bad relationship with my husband but there is always room for improvement. Besides, I think of these types of books as not only self help books but as my own private sessions with a psychologist without the huge doctor bill and appointment waiting time.

I found this book well written. It was insightful and had helpful tips. It was written in a way that the “regular” person could understand without feeling stupid trying to figure out the meanings. What I liked about this book as the examples or the couples featured in this book and the different situations were very relatable. At the end of the chapters is a “Help Yourself” section. It lists a few questions for discussion or just to thin about for yourself. Another thing nice about this book is that it is geared towards both men and women. It helps to give view points from both sides as we all know you can’t know the true story unless you know both sides of it. Also, after reading this book you will realize that you are more normal then you thought. This book is worth the money. I would pick up a copy and keep it by your bedside. After reading this book, if it does not help you in the bedroom, then you might have other problems.

I was fortunate to win the book through Goodreads First Reads. Though my first time reading a self-help book like this, I really enjoyed it. This is a great book for women in all stages of their marriages undergoing real-life dilemmas. Laurie delves into all types of topics including: newlyweds, childrearing years, aging, infidelity, and divorce.

At the end of each chapter she provides questions to ask oneself relating to the topics covered in that chapter. These questions are helpful to not only oneself but their partner as well. Another great tool provided is the index. This makes easy reference on a subject one may want to look back on.

This book was written with a female audience in mind, but I do feel men can gain an abundance of information too. As a male interested in learning more about what their partner may be going through, this can be a great learning tool.

As a reader I found myself relating to more than one topic in this book. And I found myself jotting down pages I wanted to share with my husband. I love how the author integrated real couples with real issues into each chapter. This made is easier for your everyday person to understand.

Overall, the book offered great advice and allowed me to look at topics through a different lens. Though not each subject pertained to me, I enjoyed learning about issues that may arise in the future (menopause, divorce, etc.).

I read this book because my husband wanted to “book club” read it with me, so we can try to work out what seems to be one of the biggest fights we constantly argue about. Yet as life gets busy, I push through because I can’t get myself to DNR a book, and he just forgets to read. There were some good things in the book that I could relate to, and I look forward to having my husband read in hopes he will fully see how they are explaining my feelings. Maybe he will get it? With the right mindset, I believe this book can help couples have better insight on themselves and their partners.
