The Other Bridget: 'No one does romance and comedy better' Australian Women's Weekly

Rate this book
Named after a famous fictional character, librarian Bridget Jones was raised on a remote cattle station, with only her mother’s romance novels for company. Now living alone in Fremantle, Bridget is a hopeless romantic. She also believes that anyone who doesn’t like reading just hasn’t met the right book yet, and that connecting books to their readers is her superpower. If only her love life was that easy.

When handsome Italian barista Fabio progresses from flirting with love hearts on her coffee foam to joining the book club she runs at her library, Bridget prays her romance ‘curse’ won’t ruin things. But it’s the attention of her cranky neighbour Sully that seems to be the major obstacle in her life. Why is he going to so much effort to get under her skin?

With the help of her close friends and the colourful characters who frequent her library, Bridget decides to put both men to the test by finding just the right books to capture their very different hearts. She soon discovers that not all romances start with a meet-cute, but they might just end in happily ever after…

I work in a library, I love books and get so excited to match people with one. T.O.B has everything. Book talk, romance for young and old, women’s friendships, young girls looking up to older women for holistic mentoring, even the writing process and tropes. Mental health and other more serious themes.

Bridget is the other Bridget Jones. Named after the one and only, of course everyone assumes she’s named after ‘the one in the movie’. She’s given up correcting them. Quirky, sensitive, and strong, outspoken and reserved depending on what’s going on at the time. She will talk to anyone; unafraid to get to know her library patrons. She’s empathetic, a great listener and is always gunning for a great romance, real life or literary. I suppose I’d like to say I’m a Bridget too, love to help those that cross my path in the library - although I think my book matching skills aren’t so stellar!

Rachael has mentioned old classics, The Baby Sitters Club (my joy), and so many great books it was such a joy. Booklovers will be obsessed by all the mentions. I’m not an avid romance reader but I was captured. We hear about the country, the city, the farm, the beach. There’s chemistry and raunch, some mystery and intrigue.

This is feel good writing, such an easy read which honestly has something for everyone. The authors sunny side shows effortlessly, and I had tears which is not a frequent thing. Reading T.O.B made me love those around me a little more. How good is that? Rachael Johns has a winner with this book, and for this reader, it has really captured me more than previous titles. I love the premise, I love the pink, I love the characters. I see RJ in all of it!

With thanks to @betterreadingpreview and Penguin for my advance review copy to read and review.

Rachel Johns this is a brilliant story, you took me through every emotion there is, I laughed, I cried, I yelled as I got to know Bridget Jones, yes the other Bridget she is named after the one and only by her mother who is a big reader and this has passed onto Bridget who is known as Bee and is a hopeless romantic and is a librarian with the best work mates, come along and meet Bree and her friends at Fremantle Library.

Bridget grew up on a remote cattle station but is loving her life in Fremantle and her job, she has a superpower of being able to match a person to a book and she feels everyone should read (I can’t agree more) but Bridget has dreams of marriage and children but has yet to find the love of her life, she has been let down so many times in the past but are things just about to change when the gorgeous Italian barista Fabio asks her out? He even joins the book club to be closer to her, but then her new neighbour cranky, grumpy Sully seems to be doing everything to get under her skin and annoy her, why though?

This book is beautifully written with lots of references to books that I have read and loved, but the characters in this story win hands down, they are all the best not only Bee, but Fred, Xavier, Persephone Janine and all of the Bookstars I could barely put this one down I loved it so much, will Bridget find her HEA?

I highly recommend this one I loved it from start to finish, this one is uplifting and left me smiling and it is a must read, I didn’t want it to end, but the ending is fabulous I think this one is Rachael John’s best yet. Truly don’t miss this one you will not be disappointed.

Once again Aussie author Rachael Johns has done a brilliant job in entertaining her readers. The Other Bridget is a feel-good story with relatable and likeable characters. Although this is quite a big book it was easy to read and before I knew it I was turning the last page. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can’t wait to see what this author writes next. Highly recommended.

Bridget Jones was raised on a remote cattle station in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Her mum named all of her children after fictional characters, Bridget is a librarian and lives in Fremantle. Bridget still believes in love, unlike her skill of choosing the right book for a reader and the same doesn’t apply to her romantic relationships and she's dated her fair share of duds.

Italian barista Fabio does catch her eye when it’s her turn to do the before work coffee run, he joins one of the libraries book clubs and she hopes he’s a nice as he seems. Bridget and her new neighbour Sully don’t get off to a good start, the man seems determined to drive her crazy and annoy her and she comes up with some clever ways to get back at him.

The Other Bridget is full of wonderful characters, like her work colleagues, members of the library and the book clubs. Bridget takes you on a journey around Fremantle, and a literary one with each book she suggests and recommends, and I have jotted down a few.

A narrative about life, friendship, finding that special person, and books, what we can learn from them and people, the joy of reading, and everything from the classics to romance novels.

I highly recommend The Other Bridget by the talented Rachael Johns and she's high up on my list of favourite Australian authors, it made me laugh and cry and the story would appeal to a wide range of readers and age groups and it has lots of hidden meaning/messages between it's pages and five big shinny stars from me.

Oh I wanted to like this so badly. But
- the main character sucked. like, cried and refused to talk to the romantic interest for a day because he *checks notes* pretended not to love a book she recommended so she'd keep recommending books to him and he'd have an excuse to talk to her?
- painfully self-referential
- depiction of libraries and librarians felt like a group of librarians got together and wrote a fantasy au where librarians are the saviours of the universe. Wayyyyy too self-congratulatory
- on that, every book recommendation was ripped straight from the front page of Booktopia
- doing TOO MUCH. We tried to tackle: eating disorders, kids with cancer, PTSD, why romance is a valid genre, *cute if quirky old people*, fraud, why libraries are SO very important (I am a librarian myself, and even I felt preached to) and also ghosts?!?. Yeesh.
- awful, unrealistic dialogue. Especially for the teenage character. Starting every sentence with "OMG" was bad enough, when the author tried to wedge in a "totally lit" I was ready to set myself on fire.
- and the romance itself when it finally happened? Meh.

Still gets 2 stars because there was a point early on where I thought it might shape up into a good book, and because I think if the character Sully were in any other book he'd actually be a wonderful romance novel love interest. But alas.

Rachael Johns is a Perth-based author, whose novels are best-sellers. She writes rural romance and women's/life/general fiction, I favour the latter.

There were so many things I loved about this new novel:
- the title which refers to our heroine, Bridget Jones, a twenty-seven-year-old librarian;
- the library setting and the many interesting characters;
- the many book references, incredibly enough, I knew/read many of them;
- I love a first-person narrated novel, this checked that box as well;
- it was fluffy as you'd expect from a rom-com novel, but it also had substance and deals with or mentions: eating disorders, cancer, and financial scamming.
- the love interests weren't too bad, admittedly both were too good to be true, but it's a romance novel, it's escapism.
- the cherry on this already delicious rom-com, was that I enjoyed knowing the settings, I'd visited the library several times, I love Fremantle, I visit it often.

Why not 5 stars:
- at almost 500 pages or 14 hrs+, it was too long for this short-on-time reader/listener, even though I consumed it in a few days.
- those who've been reading my ramblings for some time know that I'm not a fan of epilogues, this one only reinforced my views.

Other than the above-mentioned grumbles, this was a fun read (minus the occasional tears) that kept me entertained and wanting to find out what comes next, an accomplishment in itself, as I've been abandoning a record number of books.

Congratulations to Rachael Johns for writing such a fabulous novel.

When a book is by one of my favourite authors and the lead character is a librarian, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that I'll really enjoy it, which is exactly what happened. Main character Bee (real name being Bridget Jones, just like the other famous literary character) is looking for love, preferably in an organic 'meet-cute' kind of way. Enter on to the scene hot Italian barista Fabio... but what about hot grumpy neighbour Sully who seems intent on annoying Bee? I loved that Bee took personal offence when someone said they didn't enjoy her book recommendations - as a reader and a library worker, I have felt this hurt haha. This story is a well-written read which is easy to get into, and has something in it for everyone - romance, friendships, some drama, health issues, loss, a great cast of characters and a whole lot of book references. Absolutely delightful!

Synopsis
Bridget - the other Bridget Jones - has had one bad luck date after another. Waiting for her perfect meet cute, will this romantic librarian ever find her happily ever after?

Thoughts
Just recently, I had the opportunity to spend more time in Australia due to work and visited Perth for the first time earlier this year. During my stay, I decided to delve into Australian-based romance novels, intrigued to see how they compare to the American romances I'm accustomed to.

Things I Loved
The Banter - The delightful pranks played between Bridget and Sully had me laughing out loud and smiling at the ridiculousness. It was truly enjoyable.
Slow Burn - I appreciated the gradual development of the main characters' relationship. It added depth to the story and kept me eagerly engaged. No insta love in this book, always love me a good grumpy x sunshine.
Aussie! - As a newcomer to Australia, I found the small, specific references in the book absolutely charming. It made me feel more connected to the setting and culture.

Things I Didn’t Love As Much
Length - While I enjoyed the story, I found the close to 500 pages to be a bit lengthy for an easy, breezy rom-com. I wished for more moments between Sully and Bridget after the captivating build-up.
Epilogue - The final section of the book didn't resonate with me as much as the rest of the story.

To sum it up, this novel was the perfect beach read - I devoured it in one sitting on the beach. I was so pleased with it that I've already placed an order at my library for another one of the author's books! Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

A heartfelt and warm romantic comedy, featuring book-loving librarian Bridget Jones.

Like me, Bridget believes that anyone who does not like reading simply has not met the right book yet.

This lighthearted story features witty banter, a book-loving protagonist and an entertaining story of the unpredictable nature of romance and love.

This feel-good book is a celebration of romance stories through the ages.

The Other Bridget by Rachael Johns
Loved this Australin flavoured enemies to lovers romantic comedy that celebrates libraries, bookclubs and books in such a clever and quirky way! It was an absolute delight reading this, it was uplifting and addictive.

Bridget Jones grew up on a remote cattle station , now she’s living in Fremantle with her dog JB and working as a librarian which she is passionate about. She’s named after the famous Bridget Jones character and her love life is well… cursed, enough said!

Two interesting men soon enter Bridget’s life, Fabio the swoon worthy Italian barista and Sully the broody, exceptionally annoying next door neighbour. The cast of supporting characters are realistic and wonderfully thought out. Will Bridget ever find her happy ever after?

Some of our characters are also going through some serious issues highlighted throughout the story which was woven in really well.

There is so much to love in this book for booklovers, you’ll laugh and cry a little, just magical.

Completely gave me all the feels!!!!!!!!!!!!! I laughed alongside Bridget as she fought with her new hot neighbour, had fun with her as she drank book themed cocktails and loved her so much as she taught me about her personal challenges (I don’t want to give spoilers) I was kind of expecting a Bridget Jones retelling, and there is love for the book and movie of course..but it’s the loveliest love letter to libraries and books, Perth and friendship. Such a gorgeous read, couldn’t have loved it more

Thank you Penguin for sending us a copy to read and review.
Just like a fine wine, Rachael Johns gets better and better as time goes on.
The Other Bridget is glittering, glorious and delightful and will go down in history as one of the best romcoms to hit the shelves.
Librarian Bridget Jones is named after the fictional character and she has heard all the jokes about it.
Growing up in the country and now living in the city, Bridget has been an avid reader all her life.
Believing books are everything.
But when it comes to her love life, that’s a whole other story.
Soon two men cross her path.
The very good looking barista Fabio and her new next door neighbour, the annoying Sully.
Can Bridget turn her love of books into real life and met the man of her dreams…….
There’s so much to love in this book.
The characters are iconic, the plot is magical, the emotion is high, the humour is in prosperity and it will give you a behind the scenes look at the daily operations of a library.
It will give you all the feels and get your senses tingling as the story comes to life right in front of your eyes.
There’s a nod to many classic novels, as the lead protagonist has a great love of reading, the mentions are welcomed and will get the fingers googling to check out the titles.
Never a dull moment here and I can confidently say this is one of Rachael’s finest books, if not the best!

This is a book you are going to want to read!

You'll laugh, you'll cry & you'll swoon.

The Other Bridget has all the hallmarks of what makes a Rachael Johns novel so addictive.

There were multiple love interests, an amazing cast of supporting characters and strong female friendships.

There was joy, conflict, misunderstandings, suspense, tears, and laugher, all the emotions Rachael could possibly tug out of you.

And with Bridget working in a library there were soooooo many books mentioned.

The Other Bridget is out late January and I have no doubts it will be flying off shelves.

I originally was drawn to this book because of the title, as I had never read this author, but I was pleasantly surprised at what a great story it was. The Other Bridget by Rachael Johns is a feel- good romantic comedy about a librarian and her craptacular luck with love. One failed relationship after another, she finds herself ready to give up. Two men enter her life around the same time. One lovely and one a disaster! We get to follow along and see the relationships develop between Bridget and a handsome batista and Bridget and her grumpy neighbor. The humor and hilarious antics in this book are everything. They kept me giggling throughout the book.
Be forewarned there is a very emotional and devastating element to this book. 💔 There is way more feel- good than sad, but be prepared to shed a few tears. I'll definitely be adding other books to my TBR from this author.

Thank you, NetGalley and Bloodhound Books, for an advanced copy of The Other Bridget. I loved it!

Agggrrrrhhhh Rachael, you owe me precious sleep time because I found it impossible to leave your fab new release alone. I heard all the praise for TOB but didn't expect to fall in love with it so much. Absolutely, with no doubt not only my favourite book of yours but also one that I'll treasure forever. I laughed out loud, sobbed actual tears, and thanks to some pretty steamy scenes.... became quite tingly. 😉

Just like her namesake, our Bridget believes in romance but is unlucky in love. After numerous failed attempts with dating apps, she sets off to meet a man the old-fashioned way. With a bunch of book loving senior citizens setting her up with their grandsons, joining a kick boxing class, and frequent flirtations with the Italian barista at the local cafe, Bridget has more than a chance. There's one that is definitely out of bounds, though - her grumpy next-door neighbour, Sully. Their ongoing feud was one of the many highlights involving gnome napping, terrible bagpipe playing, multiple catalogue sign ups, and OMG chapter nine made me pee my pants. 🤣

No supporting character was pushed to the background. Each and every one was an integral part of the plot, brought to life in a way only Rach can write. You'll root for the majority as they tackle relatable issues, but there's one or two who turn out to be deceiving jerks. Don't worry. They get what they deserve thanks to a mobility scooter riding Russian and her pet dog.

Rachael's sunny personality shines through. If you're a fan of hers, you'll spot some well placed Easter eggs scattered throughout. I wasn't aware that the locations mentioned are actually real. Take me to Fremantle stat, because I want to walk in Bridget's shoes!!

Don't mind me, but I'm totes jealous of Bridget's librarian job. Book recommending really is her superpower! In fact, I'm going to add those that aren't already there to my TBR list.

What got me in the end was the epilogue. Just when my heart couldn't possibly take anymore, you dare do THAT to me!

Oh, and Bridget, I was scared of 'The Monster at the End of this Book' as a child, too. 🤭

Give us a television series or motion picture, please, because I can't get enough of Bridget and the gang. Wear those bunny ears with pride, Bridget, because you're a shining superstar!

What a special book to devour. You deserve all the accolades for The Other Bridget, my friend.

It's one of these times that I wish I could give a book more than 5 🌟!

There was a theme in this book that romance novels can cover serious issues also. Unfortunately this book seemed to try and cover all the serious issues (eating disorders, loss of family members, PTSD, fraud, brain tumours, cancer…). There were way too many sub plots. This is my first book by this author, they seem to be pretty popular but I won’t be reading any more.

Brilliant! A powerful story of friendships, family and connections. Raw at times, sad too. But mostly funny and engaging. Some of the best banter I’ve ever read - between friends, enemies, family, workmates. And not just a bit funny. Laugh out loud funny! Didn’t want it to end. (Happy Veronica is still in one piece … )

I’m going to pretend the epilogue doesn’t exist x

This was such a cute, fluffy read… until .

This book beautifully has representation of loveable characters at every stage of life: children, teens, 20s who don’t know how to live life, couples having babies, empty nesters, and octogenarians. Well done!

Loved the side stories we got in this story. Wow wow wow.

Read this if you’re an Aussie and LOVE Bridget Jones’ Diary.

Beloved Australian author Rachael Johns has released her first romantic comedy. Best known for her rural romance novels, she has also written several general fiction books, and those are the ones of hers that I normally read. There has been a lot of anticipation surrounding this book and so far, it’s raking in the five-star reviews.

I feel that in this novel, Rachael has put a lot of herself into it, specifically regarding Bridget’s love of romantic fiction and everything bookish. There’s also a personal health aspect that Bridget lives with that the author herself has been very open about, in terms of her own struggles throughout her life. To me, The Other Bridget feels like Rachael Johns has finally arrived at that coveted space that not many authors get to – the place where they can write what they want, the book they’ve always had inside them.

There is much to enjoy within this novel and for the most part, it’s a lot of fun, particularly the interactions between friends, both new and old. It’s very long though, just shy of 500 pages, and I’ve recently broken up with big books, so I found this hard going at times. For me, a few of the plot points were a bit redundant and I could see many places where the novel could have been trimmed down and not been worse off for it.

I chose the audio version of this novel, and the narration was quite good, the story was brought to life with enthusiasm, and it was also nice to hear from Rachael Johns at the start as she read the author note herself, setting the tone for the story. The value of reading, all things books, and the importance of libraries, are of course some of my favourite topics, so I thoroughly enjoyed all the bookish parts of this story. I recommend the audio version; it will perk up your commute and give you a proper romcom movie vibe while you’re at it.

Bridget is a librarian who prides herself on being able to select just the right book for anyone and believes reluctant readers just haven't found the right book yet.
This is Johns' first romcom, she usually writes rural romance novels as well as general fiction.
I loved Bridget's love of romantic fiction and the way the author included many book titles throughout the book . It also deals with serious issues, illness, mental health, and it appears that Johns' personal health struggles have been represented through Bridget.
This novel was a lot of fun, especially the interactions between Bridget's friends, family and 'enemies'.
It was quite a long book (500 pages) and I feel the last chapter took the book on a whole new path, which was weird.
Overall, great story and I would definitely read her next book.

I do like a modern day romance novel. Throw in a librarian, a bookclub and a dog and I am all in!
Bee, aka Bridget Jones, was a delightful human. In love with love and a devourer of romance novels. She he as her super power of matching people with a book that will turn them into a reader. Wonderful to see so many titles that I have adored being bought up throughout the story.
I loved the members of the bookclub as they wanted to discuss Bee's love-life in place of the book. We should never underestimate the wealth of knowledge these seniors have.
The staff of the library were all adorable and relatable. The turmoil when there is a change to management is so very true. Nobody likes change.
Then there is the romance! I liked the flirting with Fabio and then the crossed wires with Sully.
Great weekend read and it left me feeling happy with life

Disliked the ending. This was a solid 4 stars until the last 3 chapters and the only reason I'm giving this a 3 is because I wouldn't usually totally pan an Australian author who I think can write well. I saw the ending coming from the plot (so does it make it edgy if it's totally predictable?) but maybe it's because of my job, and that this isnt just a fairy tale, but using a child with cancer as a plot point in this way is not what I read these books for. Especially as it was an unnecessary deviation for a truly awful epilogue. I detest all forms of cheap emotional manipulation. See: Jodie Piccoult etc.

A book clearly written by a book lover. I’m a librarian in Western Australia so I felt that I could relate to the main character on several levels. I really appreciated all the references to popular novels, it feels nice to recognise references for once. A cute easy read, liked the narration on the audiobook too!

Only thing is the ending felt quite rushed and sudden. Especially the epilogue which added almost new genre to the book?
