"Every so often a vampire story comes along that changes the entire genre..." - Taken from a reader review.

Absolution is a new story of heartbreak, betrayal, seduction and re-finding love.

Eve Blakethorn can barely remember what it was like to be unaware of the vampire world around her. Many years have passed since she met the stranger, the man who saved her life, gave her the world and promised her immortality. Unfortunately for Eve someone in power had not wanted her to have the world. Within days of her marriage her life is shattered. Everyone Eve cares for, vampire and human, is taken from her and she is left alone to fend for herself in a world she neither understands nor fits into. How can she hope to survive her dark and lonely existence while still plagued by the horrors she witnessed when her husband died? How can she avoid becoming prey to the monster who stalks her footsteps, the devil she has long suspected to be the one who brought about her husband’s downfall?

Desperation drives her every move, leading her into the darkness where monsters wait. Can Eve discover the truth about how her world came to crumble and who was really responsible? Is there another stranger out there capable of bringing her some sense of peace? And just what is the vampire government, The Senate, hiding in the dark tunnels under the city?

Favorite Quote: “I just want to get through every fucking day, as well as I can, until I finally die like everyone I care about did.”

Eve Blackthorn’s world has always been filled with vampires. Saved by a vampire as a teenager, Eve had no way of knowing the impact he would have on her future. She eventually falls in love with him and they marry, much to the dismay of some. Days after their wedding, her entire family is massacred and her husband, Robert, is convicted and executed for the crime. Now Eve works in a brothel, servicing the men who took her husband from her. She has reached a point where she no longer cares what happens to her. She is disconnected and broken. Everyone she has ever loved is gone; ripped brutally away from her without a single chance of saying goodbye. Left to her own devices in a world that wants her dead, she knows the vampire government had something to do with her family’s murder and her husband’s death but she has no way to prove it.

Eve pulls herself out of her downward spiral with the help of some unusual allies. As the truth begins to reveal itself, the secrets the vampire government are hiding points directly towards Eve. She learns that she has been merely made a pawn in a plot that threatens everyone. A plot that forces her to ally with the very monsters who ripped her world out from under her. As the clock ticks down, Eve will use whoever and whatever she can to avenge her husband, her family, and take back her life.

Absolution, book one in McGurk’s Vampire Alliance, is a noir urban fantasy with nail biting suspense, delicious betrayal, dangerous antagonists, and an underlying theme of heartbreak and sorrow. McGurk gives us a new look at vampires that is both appealing and appalling. Lush world building combined with highly complex and multi layered characters tells a dark story driven by the emotions of those who live it. The first half is slow to develop as the narratives alternate between Eve’s present and her husband’s past. Though it was a little rough acclimating between the two voices and seemingly unrelated storylines, as we continue reading, the two stories merge and you begin to see the big picture. From there, the story races to unfold along an illuminated path-only showing so much as you walk a twisted path with our protagonist. The smooth writing and descriptive detailing drew me in and I found myself becoming heavily vested in the characters outcomes. Ms. McGurk takes her time in developing her characters and their connections to the world and one another.

No person in here is exempt from judgement and everyone has an end game. Good and evil are merely words. The degrees of separation are fine threads whose ties become more visible as the story progresses. The past controls the future and this is amply displayed as we are given an intimate view of vampire politics and how the decisions Eve’s husband made in the past affected his future.

Visions of David and Goliath come to mind as we watch Eve face adversaries galore in her quest to discover who set in motion the events that sent her down a path of no redemption. Misdirection is your best friend as McGurk unveils a Machiavellian plotline that leaves readers and Eve reeling from the possible implications.

The romance of the story reveals slowly like a faint ray of hope. Lightweight and still developing, it packs very emotional punch. We see many different emotional entanglements- family, friendship, and love. Eve’s trust has been completely shattered and she struggles to kept everyone at bay. They all run parallel to the main storyline and are used to reinforce the main conflict.

As I raced towards the ending, I felt like I was on a roller coaster, my stomach pitching and rolling as each new clue and dramatic scene unfolded. I like how everything isn’t explained away and some decisions made, though I didn’t agree with them all, were the only choices that could be made. The ending is a climactic finale that satisfies the immediate storyline but leaves a cliffhanger that guarantees you need to pick up book two, Allegiance, which is available now.

If you looking for a unique character driven Urban Fantasy that delivers a fresh outlook on vampires, then I recommend getting Angela Louise McGurk’s Absolution.

I saw this reviewed by Tori over on Smexybooks and decided to give it a go. Her UF recs usually work for me, and it happened with this book as well.

Absolution is grittier, definitely more dark take on vampires.
Story starts with a bang- Eve comes to arena to witness execution of a vampire who killed her family. That vampire is also her husband. Last look into eyes of only man she ever loved proved what she was suspecting- Robert would never hurt her. He was a powerful, influential vampire, but he was set up for some reason and she will do anything to clear his name, no matter how long it takes.

This opening scene pretty much sets the tone for rest of the book. At times we can really feel just how hopeless her task is. Vampires in this world are evil and their ruling body-the Senate- is corrupted and greedy and shady politics behind Robert's death is what left the biggest impression on me. The way vampires work in this world is...really something. I'll give you an example:
For murder of Eve's family, Robert is sentenced hundred lashes for each of his victims. But for the crime that's considered more serious- endangering vampire civilization by attracting undue attention to their existence, he is sentenced to death.
You see that scale? They put themselves way above humans and murdering few is just misdemeanor. Also, law that allows them to deal with vampires who don't agree with their politics is very open to interpretation and manipulating rules is more sinister way to kill someone.
But there are more evidence we can determine vampires/humans relations. I really liked how author classified humans in vampire world (it's a cool nod to Bram Stoker): Renfields are humans who are in service of vampire for the promise of immortality. They are very loyal. Harkers are also humans who are working for vampires, but they are paid for their job. Lucys are vampire groupies (something like fangbangers from TrueBlood) and Minas are humans vampire fall in love with.
Obviously, Eve is Mina and not just any Mina- she is Robert Blackwood's Mina and that is her only commodity. Because she wants to find the truth behind what happened with her family she decided to use that- vampires are getting of on possibility of possessing-and fucking- her. And this is it... Eve is not noble, she is not heroine you will find in majority other books in genre. She became someone who sell her own body to survive in this world. And she is very conscious of her place. This is my favorite quote from novel and it tells everything you need to know about Eve:

I want to tell my stalker that I don’t respond well to threats but in all honesty I respond very well to them.

I particularly liked the real feel behind Eve's character- she is self-destructive and despite the purpose behind the way she's selling herself, Eve goes through periods of self-loathing, seeking escape in drugs and flirting with death. This is not comfortable to read and it shouldn't be, but instead of hating when she makes bad decisions, I found myself understanding this girl who was left without everyone she loved and security overnight. I also liked that Robert is very much present in this novel after that first scene. For bigger part this book is told alternating 2 povs- Eve's in present, and people from Robert's past, before and after he became immortal. His past is important for understanding motivations other players, both good and bad guys, have for making certain moves and it's more than true for a guy who is also Eve's romantic interest. To tell anything about him is a spoiler, but considering everything, especially love Eve and Robert had for each other, this guy is maybe the only one we can imagine her with and not feel like it's wrong. It works.
I also have to mention setting- Story is set in Newcastle and I liked the architecture described, especially the Vampire Senate headquarters. Those tunnels are pretty damn creepy.
I chucked a star off because story jumped out of pace few times. I found myself totally engrossed in story, only to be pulled back by next chapter. It wasn't that bad, but it made a difference between "allnighter" read and the one I enjoyed reading but didn't have troubles putting down.
Fair warning, story ends with a cliffhanger. I bought second one, and I'll try to keep it on bay until third book at least gets a release date (operating word being "try".) :)

Good read, recommended. ;)

Have you ever read one of those books that you loved so very much that it was hard to put into words the plethora of feelings you experienced from the tale? Well Absolution is such a book for me. The tale is told primarily from two points of view, which took a moment to get used to, switching from Eve's present events to journal entries of historical events that took place in another character's life (I will not tell who's as it would be a spoiler and we cannot have that - oh no we can't) and back again finely converging at the present. While this was at first off putting, primarily because I wanted to get back to what was going on with Eve, but as I continued to read the journal entries also were engrossing and heartbreaking and I was sucked into the story and could not put it down. Absolution is beautifully written with fantastic world building and excellent character development. It is not a happy or lighthearted tale, but rather is often dark, brutal, and full of injustice that will have you signing up for the next demonstration down in the square and raising your fist is protest. I loved the characters and became completely emotionally invested in their saga crying tears with each act of brutality and emotional pain inflicted, as well as cheering on each act of rebellion. The book's ending is satisfactory and a little open-ended without actually being a complete cliffhanger, but I can say that look out in the next installment because there is a storm on the horizon. On finishing this read I had to hop over and find out more about book two and found Allegiance was released on Feb. 2nd, 2014 and I am so excited to be able to jump right back into the action. I definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy the darker tales involving vampires and the supernatural, as well as a completely new and original take on the vampire mystique with that little bit of what if should history had a slight turn in a different direction from what is the norm and familiar. This book was received from the author with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book

Disclosure: This ebook was provided by the author in exchange for an HONEST and not necessarily positive review.

I think I struggled at first with this book because it jumped about back and forth through time and didn't explain itself fully so often I had noticed I was frowning whilst reading. At around 37% though that changed as the pieces started to take form into what was a most enjoyable read I must say.

It had me laughing and hurting along with the characters and left a major storyline for a sequel. The characters are relatable but with deeper tragedy than normal people have and also doesn't explain certain threads of the story which you wonder about. This is enough to attract you to book two. I have it on my wishlist just now.

I have read plenty other vampire stories and this is definitely in my top 20.

The first book in the Vampire Alliance series takes readers on an emotional journey full of suspense, betrayals and discoveries. I will admit that at first I wasn’t sure what whether I was going to like this book or not. In the first half of the book , the chapters flip flop from Eve’ story to the history of how three friends became vampires and it was a little annoying, but the second half of the book made up for it and it became clear why the author gave us that information. I will certainly have to read the next book in the series to find out just what The Senate was doing and what Eve is going to do about it.

I received this book in return for an honest review from Sweets Books and Angela McGurk.
Robert Blakethorn was from a high class family even though he was born out of wedlock. He was raised to think he could talk down to people and he was the master to his slaves who were really servants of the house. But as he grew older his faithful servant Tulloch Sullivan became someone he confided in and grew to like. When both their fathers died on the titanic, Roberts’s mother instructed Tulloch to watch over her son and become his bodyguard. Little did he know how long he would be Robert’s bodyguard and closest friend. Robert’s mother couldn’t take the loss of her husband and ended up killing herself. This put Robert into a downward spiral and while doing so dropped his standing into society. He lost his fiancé due to his drinking, started gambling away his father’s money and almost got himself killed several times. Tulloch bailed him out and took several beatings. Luckily Tulloch found something worth living for, Robert’s maid and his fiancée Tess. Unfortunately his luck soon ran out as well. His mother passed and when he returned to his master his fiancée decide she wanted Robert and Tulloch found her startling him. But Tulloch followed his orders and followed his master to war and even to death or what is called Undead. Yes Vampires. For centuries they lived as friends and allies. Robert found the love of his life in a human called Eve. But several days after their wedding Eves family was murdered and Robert was arrested for it. Tulloch was left to mourn his closest friend and pine over his wife. Will Tulloch be able to protect Eve in the vampire world? Will Robert be proven innocent of Eve’s family’s murders? Will Tulloch be able to hide his love for Eve? Read it!
I love Eve and Tulloch. The scene I loved most was when Eve finally confronted Tulloch. Great! Eve was defiantly a self-loathing person in the beginning and was punishing herself for no reason. I had trouble with a lot of grammar, spelling and missing words, but all in all a great book!
Defiantly recommended for Paranormal/ Romance followers, and Vampire fans. 18+ due to sex and violence.

This book had a slow build. While the beginning started with a bang, the narrative then slips between Eve's present circumstances and the story of three men (Eve's lost husband being one of them) who became vampires in the early 1900s. It isn't until a good way into the book that the threads of the past and the present begin to come together and you can see why we needed both sides of the story.

Frankly, I didn't always know what to think of Eve. I can appreciate that she managed to find a way to survive against terrible odds, but she was very disconnected in the beginning. She makes some choices that have devastating consequences for her. She pushes hard for answers at some of the worst possible moments.

As the truth of things begins to come out, she sees how she's been played. And it's not pretty.

An intriguing world filled with corrupt and corruptible vampires and a handful of humans who know what's what. Throw in a small force of vampires who want to stop the corruption in its tracks and you have the makings for something big. Eve's life isn't always pretty, but she keeps soldiering on. Some days, that's all you can ask for.
