From the famous to the obscure, this new edition of the immensely popular Oxford Dictionary of Saints provides concise, readable accounts of the lives of over 1,300 saints, more than any similar guide. In addition to the biographical sketches, information on the cults and artistic associations of particular saints is also given full coverage. Fully revised and updated for this new edition, this handy resource also includes new entries on a number of recently canonized saints as well as a new appendix on patronages. The inclusion of more saints from Europe confirms the dictionary's reputation as the standard one-volume work available in English. A book to be dipped into again and again, The Oxford Dictionary of Saints will intrigue anyone who delights in stories of the marvelous, the uncanny, and the bizarre.
Very dry, just the facts. And in many cases, ONLY the base facts. If you want to know the names, dates of birth, titles and native countries of Saints, you'll find that here. A LOT of that here.
But if you want to know WHO these people were and WHY they were made saints... Well, you're better off looking elsewhere.
A great resource for saints associated with Europe and England. A good reference and research book. It contains in-depth, well-researched information which has been succinctly put together. Where there is doubt about the authenticity of any source material, this is clearly stated in the text.
This is a fun book and WOW there are a lot of Saints....I mean to say, "A LOT." I keep this book beside my reading chair and peruse it from time to time. Enjoy.
No frills. Good for what it is. This is not something I would read cover to cover, but whenever a saint comes up in my Medieval studies, I know I can turn to this trusty volume to give me a little background.
Good glossary, index. Not too much info, short versions of the tales, but a good reference guide to get you going! Feast days listed several ways in appd
