Running with Curves: Why You’re Not Too Fat to Run, and the Skinny on How to Start Today

Rate this book
Do you think running sucks?

Do you think you're too fat to run?

Look no further, because this is the book of running tips for you. With humor, compassion, and lots of love, Jill Angie delivers the overcoming the challenges of running with an overweight body and giving your self-esteem an enormous boost in the process.

This isn't a guide to running for weight loss, or a simple running plan. This book is specifically about how a woman carrying a few (or many) extra pounds can successfully become a runner in the body she has right now.

Drawing on 15 years of experience as a curvy runner, Jill gives you everything you won't find in the typical beginner's running book, such as standing up to your inner mean girl, finding the right sports bra, and building up your self-confidence one step at a time. No matter what size you are, by the end of this book, even the most beginner runner will realize they are capable of much more than they ever thought possible.

Apparently this is a book for ladies. I am not a lady and I just assumed that the "Running with Curves" was meant for all big people, not just big lady people. Having said that, the book is super motivational and also made me really think about the need for sports bras with lady racers. That must be rough--sorry about that, ladies.

The book borders on sappy but it's a simple treatise on using running to boost your self-esteem and it's geared towards reluctant runners. Well done, but very short.

People may wonder, as I do, why I read things that are a bit far removed from my reality. I think I collect books and read them as a sort of dream-board idea. Sometimes for research for writing, but, in this case, a sort of hope, that someday I will be well again and be able to challenge my body to fun. Running looks like fun. I doubt I will be ready for it for quite a while as I am just now able to take an occasional walk. But with spring in the air, I plan to get out more and more. Who knows, maybe a sprint or two will result here and there.

This book doesn't get into the damages that can be done to legs or knees when a person is overweight or out of shape. But assumes that the person has figured out how far one can push themselves. It is more a book of inspiration. You can do it. Don't worry about how you look to others, regain your own self-confidence. If I gained nothing else from the book I did pull that into my being. It is something I need to work on. And so my walks will be a part of that.

Thank you, Jill Angie for writing a book about running for people like me.

I guess I’m what you’d call an “experienced runner.” Not that I necessarily believe that, but given the fact that I’ve coached other people to run, I suppose the label fits. Running With Curves, while targeting “beginning runners” is really for the runner in all of us, regardless of your experience level. Jill gives straightforward advice for how to start running. More than that, though, she calms your fears. She quiets that doubting voice that says, “you can’t.” She motivates. She reminds us that we are the masters of our own destiny — exercise included. Reading this book made me want to go for a run, to remember why I love it and how good it feels. Read it to learn. Or, read it to remind yourself. Either way … read it!

For a long time now I have wanted to want to run. I can't explain why it seems to draw me in but it does. Now, I have never run (not for sport anyway). I am quite overweight and the idea of running seems a bit out of reach as I can't tie my shoes without breaking into a sweat and panting. I came across this ebook and decided to read it, as the title seems written just for me. I enjoyed her writing style as she approaches the topic of running with humor and candor. I felt inspired by it and running doesn't seem like such an impossible goal now. I plan on reading her other book on running a 5k. And hopefully, I will soon be able to call myself a runner.

Good info, though not new info

Love the work Jill has done over the years to break mindsets on running in bigger bodies. Because I’d heard her podcasts and read her blogs along the way, much of this info was redundant [for me]. It’s a great first stop for anyone looking to get started - it’s a timely revisit for those of us changing our mindsets to start again.

Definitely for beginners

A great quick read for beginners! Being a fairly seasoned runner I didn't get much out of it except for talking to your inner mean girl! I may run a lot but I still have problems shutting her up! I you ate just starting out or even starting over this is a good place to get some info and motivation!

As someone with a lot of "curves" it was nice to read that I am not the only one embarking on the running adventure. Jill Angie's cheerleader spirit left me with more confidence to keep running--even on days I "don't feel like it" or days when I'm not running my best. Definitely a wonderful pep-talk!

This was a pretty basic book that didn't have anything new or unusual to say. There were two sections that were geared specifically towards running with curves: get a good sports bra and wear appropriate (IE not super loose) clothing. Those chapters are geared specifically towards curvier women, but the rest of the book can be used by anyone.

A nice little motivational book for the non-elite runner. There's nothing earth shattering in the book nor are there any tips one couldn't get from chatting with friends and family involved at almost any level of running.

Still, getting tips from others like myself (a non-elite overweight person) is always welcome.

The book's main strength is being a source of encouragement.

Short, sweet, and to the point. It was a fast read and got me laughing on more than one occasion. I was looking for a motivation-booster, and I definitely found it in this book! This is a good book for anyone who needs a guide for beginning to run our a confidence/motivation boost when they hit a rut in their running journey.

Okay?

I'm not a runner, so maybe I'm not the target audience here, but I didn't feel like there was a lot of material to this. I had hoped for a bit more than a friendly pep talk with advice aimed exclusively at beginners.

Since I've read a fair number of running books over the years, I didn't learn anything new, but I did get some good reminders and motivation in this book. Very timely for me.

Fun read. (Could use a bit more editing, so beware if you're a stickler.) Definitely one I would recommend to my non-running friends.

A very inspiring book. Not as much of a how-to and more of "You can do it, girl!" read.
