Wilbur Smith was a prolific and bestselling South African novelist renowned for his sweeping adventure stories set against the backdrop of Africa’s dramatic landscapes and turbulent history. Born in 1933 in what was then Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), he grew up in South Africa, where his love for storytelling was nurtured by the rich environment and tales of African history. His early years were shaped by his experiences in the wilderness, which later became a defining element in his fiction. After studying at Rhodes University, Smith initially worked as an accountant, but his true passion lay in writing. His breakthrough came in 1964 with When the Lion Feeds, a historical adventure novel that introduced the Courtney family saga. The book’s success led to a long-running series chronicling the exploits of multiple generations of the Courtney family, spanning centuries of African and world history. Alongside this, Smith wrote the Ballantyne series, focused on colonial Africa, and the Ancient Egypt series, which delved into historical fiction with a mythical touch. Over his six-decade career, Smith authored more than 50 novels, selling over 140 million copies worldwide. His works were characterized by meticulous research, vivid descriptions of the African wilderness, and gripping action-packed narratives. Whether set in the colonial era, the world of pharaohs, or modern-day Africa, his books often explored themes of survival, war, power, and human ambition. He collaborated with co-authors in his later years to expand his literary universe, ensuring his stories continued to reach new audiences. Beyond writing, Smith was an avid traveler and adventurer, drawing inspiration from his own experiences hunting, sailing, and exploring remote corners of Africa. While he was passionate about wildlife and conservation, some of his views—particularly regarding big game hunting—sparked debate. Nonetheless, his deep affection for Africa was evident in his writing, which celebrated both its beauty and its historical complexities. Smith’s influence on adventure fiction remains significant, with his books continuing to captivate readers around the world. His legacy endures through his richly woven tales of exploration, conquest, and the enduring spirit of Africa.
Thoroughly enjoy virtually everything Wilbur has written and currently reading 3 of his latest in collaboration with other writers. This particular Series I loved visualizing being on the journey and especially the amazing Taita. I love the style of Wilburs writing that enables the mind to take you to and be immersed in the actions and surroundings back thousands of years. If you like flowing action with well developed characters, these 4 books are great. Enjoy. ... GJK
The Egypt series of Wilbur Smith were so absorbing and took me on a fantastic time travel. I appreciated both the rich historical context and the personas developed by the author. Also the magical elements enriched my experience of this series. And I feel that I know this historical period much better now than before. I have already read these books twice and expect to return again
I couldn't put this series down! I was sucked right into the era and was swept along and loved every minute of it. These were the first books I ever read of Wilbur Smith and I dare say, weren't the last
Though it took time to finish the series, but it was nice. Once I took up the novel with every page it was hard to keep it down and always a desire to know what happened next. I did not sleep for almost 30 hours to finish River God. The whole series is engrossing.
I loved it from start to finish and it left me wanting for more. The epic narration of the various adventures that Taita and his companions went on was really entertaining and gave me a sense of appreciation for Africa and its arid but beautiful lands.
I read the first three books years ago and loved them - all 5 star ratings. However, I only found The Quest quite recently and was a bit disappointed - would have only given it a 3 to 4 star. Overall though I have thoroughly enjoyed the series.
This entire series is wonderfully written. This is my favorite series of Wilbur Smith. His historical novels bring life to a place that many will never see.
These are amazing books. By the last book I'm not sure how Taita is still alive but it doesn't matter. River God is a book I pick up often when I'm feeling a bit out of sorts and I just need something to read that goes for it. The other 3 all are great but the 5 stars is really for River God.
Great books. There are a few adult parts that make the books not Suitable for kids or the easily offended. Great historical fiction It makes me want to visit Egypt.
Nothing compares with Wilbur Smith and his talent of describing Africa. His books are AMAZING. Loved the way he described the Ancient Egypt. Loved the main character Taita.
