Akira Nikaido is a rebel without a cause and he's always just thought that he could get by day by day doing whatever the hell he wanted with the far too much free time on his hands. But when a mysterious man that only he can see that goes by the name of Shirogane appears before him and tells him to meet back at the school at 10:00 that night, Akira will have no choice but to do as he says. Caught up in two worlds unbalanced, that contains shadow monsters and ghosts and all other sorts of dangerous creatures, Akira may never be able to go back to being human again...

The main reason I decided to pick up this manga series is because I watched the first five episodes or so of the anime a couple years ago and really, really liked it, and so I thought that the manga may be even better.
Well.
I just think my tastes have really changed.
Back in 2009, 2010, 2011 until about October or November, I would have watched almost any anime and loved it. But now my tastes are a lot more specific. I believe that in the eyes of who I was back then, this volume would have deserved a rating of 3 1/5 to 4 1/5 stars. But since this is when I actually read it, I shall rate it as I see fit as who I am now.
This is a good series for any 10-14 year old just getting into anime/manga. In fact, I strongly recommend it for that age group. *Insert Facebook themed thumbs up here.*

Not as overtly slashy as the anime, alas, but depicting stunning art work, character designs, and an intriguing concept about a shadow world co-existing next to our own, whose balance is beginning to falter, allowing denizens of the shadow world to enter ours, be seen by people here, and run amuck. Caught in the middle of the conflict is Akira, a snarky unmotivated (but pretty) delinquet who finds himself the unlikely champion of the balance when he crosses the path of the mysterious Shirogane (cool hotness in a suit with a hat and a braid), changing permanently because of their meeting. Not only Akira, but Akira’s school, his friends, everyone around him finds themselves drawn into this struggle even as Akira struggles with his newfound duality.

Equal parts humor, drama, and paranormal action, this manga offers intriguing characters and character designs, whom slowly reveal their mysteries as the story develops.

Apresenta a fantasia no modo leve e engraçado. Curiosa para saber se continuará nos próximos volumes ou não.

I really liked the art.
The plot is really interesting, definetely shounen.
The anime itself apparently contains more shounen-ai themes, but it feels pure to me as I read it. :)
Since it hasn't been updated much, I forget what had happened.

I find it really difficult to get into this manga. The style is horrible (at the beginning; it gets better later on), the main character is lacking and it is a bit confusing to follow the explanations. From what I can tell it gets way better later on, but it is still difficult to get into, which is why I haven't started this series yet.

Nice artwork. Story line is a bit confusing. Perhaps if I read second volume it would be better

The art is good, there are a lot of details, especially where backgrounds an environment are concerned.

So far we've been given the general plot, almost literally word for word, through Shirogane explaining that we need to stop the shadow world from eating the human world. That's not a spoiler, it's basically within the first 20 pages. So in a way it kinda ruins the mystery of what we have to do in the long run, but there is still the mystery of why at has to be Akira. So in that respect the story still holds my attention.

I do sort of feel like Akira was rushed into helping Shirogane, there really wasn't a good enough argument for him to be where he was and do what he did. It feels like weak reasoning to get the ball rolling. And Akira tends to rub me the wrong way at certain points in the comic. He obviously isn't very interested in being around people or talking to them, he's very mean towards his friend Kengo, barging into his house and playing his games, and literally kicking him. Just, a guy like that has no business getting all up in arms when faced with saving someone from the shadow creatures Kokuchi]. It just feels as if someone who's so willing to abuse his friend shouldn't really care what happens to other people, so why the hell is he the one in this position? Why are we wasting our time with him?

I was decently entertained. It could have been better. But I do wanna see what happens.

I like the art, and I think Shirogane is gorgeous. My problem with this story is that I've read it before in other manga (like Undertaker Riddle, Vol. 1... yes, this one has been released after MF but still). And Akira is not very likeable. But it is a good shounen, it has battles, monsters (ghosts?) and an interesting concept, only not very well developed. I am pretty sure the anime is more interesting.

I already watched the anime and really liked it, but I feel this first volume isn't very hooking. On another note, I know the few bits of shonen ai in the anime are absent in the manga, but one couldn't not see Shirogane/Akira as a pairing after the anime >_<
