It's so hard to rate this book because I can't tell if I'm doing it justice by giving it 2 stars or 3.

Hung Up left me wanting more. It just ended. Also, it was really weird to me because these people seemed so god damn naive. For example, who the fuck gives all of their personal information over the phone to complete stranger? Heck, you are lucky if you get my first name. Or if I'm speaking English on the phone.

Well, James did and I didn't trust him at all. Besides that this book did deliver a god damn good twist but then just ended! LIKE WHY?! I wanted to know more about Lucy! The conversations between Lucy and James were interesting and entertaining enough. Plus the romance build up was nice throughout the book. However, that damn random ass ending just threw me for a loop.

I'm still trying to find out if this book has more chapters that are secretly hidden. I can't believe it just ended like that. I can't accept that. PLUS there's no other book. I'm sad and mad at the same time. Mostly disappointed too. UGH!

Overall, it was good and enjoyable. I'm still salty over the sudden ending but I'll learn to deal with it in 500 years.

Lucy: I don’t know. I think sometimes things happen to people that are beyond their control. Things that they don’t want to happen.
James: I know what you’re saying. Sometimes random shit happens, but for the most part, people are where they are in life because they chose to be there.

I'm still looking if that's the last page. Because, THAT'S IT?!

description

I WANT MOOOORE. Though I think the story is a little weird, because, hello?! Who gives his personal information to a complete stranger on the phone? I'm sorry, but who does that?! Apparently, James do. And that made him a little creepy in my eyes.

ANYWAY, I liked this. A lot. I thought the way it was written was going to bore me, but I really enjoyed it. The twist that the author did about Lucy was yeah.. I didn't see that one coming. But seriously, IT'S TOO SHORT. I was pissed at the ending. Not satisfying at all. If I thought about it, this wasn't even romantic. It's not cute. I mean, nothing really happened.
But it's unique! And I was left hanging. I wish the author made an epilogue or a concrete ending. That way, I would've liked it more.

Ok, I laughed a little, but I also groaned so much because they’re both so immature and slightly manipulative??
Also… I wanted more of the ending. Like, hello? Tell me if they get along in person! What do they think of each other? It feels like I’ve read so much for like zero payout.
It’s fine 🥲

Despite a few flaws I picked up on throughout the book, I really enjoyed the twists and the ending was adorable! This is definitely a fun, quick, easy read with a dash of drama. This one was good!

Told entirely in text messages, this book offers something a little unique to what I am accustomed to reading and this unique flair gave tithe book a certain degree of likability and, even though the story isn’t excessively groundbreaking or different, the format of it made it fun, quirky and appealing. Overall this book was a lot of fun and where it lacks in substance, it excels in fun.

Would definitely recommend this if you’re after something light and simple to read - perhaps during a reading slump!

I've started this book thinking that i'll read just a few chapters and continue reading it the next day. I thought that it wouldn't pull me in and make me read it all in one sitting, i mean how interesting can a book be when it includes phone messages and conversations of two strangers?

Apparently it was very interesting because i really did end up reading it all at once. Even though there isn't much action in this story, the messages that Lucy and James exchange and the conversations they have, reveal so much about themselves and the people around them. The way the romance kept building up between those two only through the phone and the way they start sharing secrets about them selves were so exciting. It was a different and yet really nice read.

If I received a phone call from a random dude.

Me: Yes?
Dude: Hi is this (place I've never heard of)?
Me: Nope.
Dude: Oh. Sorry. Uh, so do you wanna talk about stuff?
Me: *hangs up* *blocks number*

Yep. I don't like befriending random callers or texters. Realistically speaking I don't think other (rational) people also do. But hey, I thought the story was cute. I did get confused by the format of the narration but I got used to it after a few pages.

What a lovely idea! I've had my fair share of wrong numbers and I'm actually pretty good friends with one of them so I was super excited to read this one. And I'm sure, in some unrealistic world, where unicorns exist and strangers don't snatch people off the streets, this novel would have been such a delight to read. However, we don't. And these characters a very flimsy and it's evident from only reading like, a chapter that she worked very hard on creating a beautiful romance and not enough making the characters believable. James doesn't bother calling people back about their furniture yet goes out of his way to help this one girl out after talking to her once? Hell no.

Even after just how unrealistic this romance started, I kept reading on to the next chapter where I drew the line. This is a contemporary novel and I expect it to be as realistic as possible minus some things but nothing about this book is at all realistic. It's soo contrived and sloppily done and I just didn't have the heart to go on anymore.

Awful. There were only two reasons that I suffered through this book. One was that I wanted to know what the big secrets were, in hopes that the reveal would redeem the book. (It didn't.) Two was that because it was written solely in the annoying conversation script format, it was a super fast read.

But the characters were bland and annoying, the romance didn't even seem to be there, and the story was just boring. I felt like there wasn't much to the book, when the idea had such potential.

While at the library, I was desperate to find something to read. Literally DESPERATE. So, when I found this book, I was intrigued by its synopsis and took it out on a whim. It did sound a bit cliche and its Goodreads ratings weren't the most amazing, but I still decided to check it out and form my own opinion.

It turned out that this book wasn't too bad, but I wasn't necessarily a fan either, per se. I did find many amazing things about this story, but they certainly did not make up for all the faults.

To briefly synopsize, Hung Up revolves around two teenagers named Lucy and James. Lucy didn't mean to call James one day while placing in an order for something, but she got his voice anyway. When the two start talking, they realize that they have a lot in common and that they can rely on each other for almost anything. But then James wants to physically meet Lucy, but she has a secret- one that could sacrifice their relationship.

I didn't find that the characters of this book were too memorable- but this may be because the story is told in ENTIRELY phone conversations, so I wasn't really able to see any of their thoughts. I got almost no background to what the characters were saying until they fully explained it, which really bothered me. One thing I did appreciate, though, was their character development as they became more comfortable opening up to each other, but I have to admit that I did think it was a tiny bit unrealistic.

The plot of this story was bland but also at the same time entertaining, if you get what I mean. I found myself eagerly and quickly turning the pages of this book, but I just wasn't wowed. And that ending was a bit strange, as well.

Overall, this story was pretty cliche and unrealistic, but I did still enjoy it and found it to be a fluffy, fast read. If you are okay with characters without depth and a storyline made fully of phone and text conversations, then Hung Up is the book for you! But if not, I don't think you'll regret taking a pass on it.

3 1/2 Not Satisfied Stars

When I started reading this book I had zero expectations. I thought this would be some Kiddish books. And it was. But these two kids were not only some typical teenagers, there was some maturity in them. It was fun reading them.

I never knew when did my feelings changed from 'gonna abandon this book' to 'what happens next' while reading this one. Nothing was really happening. Yet I was quite intrigued with their phone calls. Lucy and James were kind of sweet. Initially I thought they were boring but they grew up on me. And I am happy that I kept reading Hung Up. But I was very disappointed with the ending. That's not done. I wanted to see how both of them react to finally seeing each other. That was very mean. Hence only 3 1/2 stars. Yes..... I can be mean too

Uf. I was afraid it would end differently. It was an easy read. Enjoyable for the most part. I think it would have been better if it wasn't just phone calls & voice messages. Nevertheless it was refreshing to read a YA book that was written in such an unique way. Many readers say the sorry isn't realistic but I disagree... I believe it could happen in real life. I liked the characters. I found their silly rows annoying though... Arguing about little things over the phone is uncool. To sum it up, I liked this book although it was mediocre.

Quick & Dirty: Adorable story that was full of humor, friendship, and emotion. While there were some things I didn’t love, overall this was an enjoyable read.

Opening Sentence: This is Lucy calling to update my order BKE-184.

The Review:

Have you ever called the wrong number and left a mean message? Well Lucy has and it wasn’t only one message but many. Someone finally answers the phone, but James wasn’t who she was expecting. Obviously she figures out that she has been calling the wrong number all this time, but instead of just hanging up the two strike up a conversation. One conversation leads to another and another. Soon they have developed a friendship and start to tell each other things that they don’t tell anyone else. As the months pass by they decide that it is finally time to meet, but Lucy has been keeping secrets. Ones that might affect the way James sees her. Is their friendship better left just to the phone or is it destined for something more?

Lucy was a sweet girl, but for most of the book she is really closed off emotionally. She is athletic, smart, and insecure like most high school girls. I actually had a hard time connecting with her because you are never inside of her head. With everything being told through phone conversations you have to kind of piece things together by yourself, which was a little frustrating at times. As her story unfolds I was able to understand her better, but it took most of the book for this to happen. So even though I ended up liking Lucy, in the end I wish I could have liked her better the whole time I was reading her story.

James was the total opposite of Lucy when it came to being an open book. He was way better at expressing himself in their conversations and because of that he was way easier to like. I felt that I was able to get to really know him and I thought he was pretty charming. He can be pretty goofy at times which was refreshing, but he also is someone you can lean on. Whenever Lucy just needed someone to talk to he was there for her, even though she wasn’t always the most open with him. I loved how patient he was and just how honest he was about his life. I can honestly see why Lucy would fall for him, I did throughout the story!

Hung Up was a really cute romance that surprisingly had a lot of depth to it. The entire book is all told through phone conversations between the two main characters, which was really different from anything else I have read. I enjoyed the style of writing, but I do feel that it was harder to connect with the characters since you only get small bits of their life. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that the whole story wasn’t just fluffy romance, there were actually some very emotional issues covered as well. There were also some really funny parts that helped to lighten the more serious tone. Probably the one thing I would have liked done differently was the ending. You pretty much are just left with very little resolution. I really wish that the author would have done an epilogue that was a phone conversation maybe a year later between the two. I don’t mind open ended stories, but personally I think that this would have been much better if it had a more closure. It was a super quick read, and even though it was wasn’t perfect, I still really enjoyed it. I would recommend this if you are looking for an adorable romance that is tinted with emotion!

Notable Scene:

James: We’ve had way more than eleven phone calls.

Lucy: I don’t count messages. I only count phone calls.

James: I like that you’re counting. Are you using hash marks?

Lucy: Yep.

James: Okay, Lucy, so what are my obsessions?

Lucy: Yurts. And women’s hair.

James: Actually, yurts don’t do much for me. But I do enjoy watching a good head of hair.

Lucy: Yeah. I used to think it was just a fixation. But now I’m sure that it’s a fetish.

James: You’ve got long brown hair. I know it.

Lucy: I’ve never confirmed that.

James: It’s my sixth sense. I can diving hair color over the phone.

FTC Advisory: Simon Pulse provided me with a copy of Hung Up. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review

I was surprised. I liked this book more than I expected, definitely: the premise didn't grab me, although the slightly mysterious summary did. I read with the plan of reading just a few pages to verify that I did not, in fact, want to continue reading the book. Instead, I finished the book fairly quickly on Pulse It.

One, I am really not a fan of different narrating styles. I love traditional narration and, though I clearly won't refuse to read a book that's narrated in a different format, it almost invariably ends up feeling like a gimmick to me.

Surprisingly, I thought it worked here. While the ending leaves much to be desired, I still preferred it to other YA romances I've read where there's just too much of everything: too much emotion, too much romance, too much about physical appearance. The narration style here actually allowed the author to stay away from some of the most common writing pitfalls with YA romance: namely, the melodramatic descriptions of emotions or physical appearance that I particularly detest (examples of the former including "disappointment roiling in the pit of X's stomach", "concern pouring off of Y," "heat rolling off of X in waves," etc.).

The characters ended up building enough depth, with enough interesting histories, that I grew to genuinely care about them and feel like they could be real people. The romance, if slightly unbelievable because of the main premise, still felt plausible. And as an added bonus, I went to college in the state of Vermont, and thoroughly enjoyed that this book was set there.

Why I ultimately can't give the book a higher rating, though, is because it's still not necessarily the kind of book I loved or which will stick with me for a while. It was acceptable, even preferable to other YA romances I've recently read, but I was still not a fan of the constant innuendos. There were times when Lucy, as a character, genuinely annoyed me and I just wished she would stop prodding--although there were other times I thought that she exemplifies many of the natural qualities of a slightly high-strung girl who's trying not to be. Overall, I think I just wanted more from the story. I did enjoy it, though.

Are you kidding me?! that's it?! The ending just....GRRRR

Bagus deh mereka saling kepo satu sama lain, berdebat, curhat, minta saran. The idea feels so realistic somewhow and i can relate to the them.

Tapi dia bukan nerd. Si Lucy juga unik. Dia berlidah tajam, penuh misteri dan pinter banget. Malah saking banyak misteri tentang si Lucy aku lebih kepo sama dia daripada si James. Si Lucy alesan aku namatin sampai akhir.

Bagusnya lagi ada beberapa twist ga terduga. Sumpah ampe shock dan ngelongo pas tau kenyataan tentang Lucy. Gewlaaaa. Bisa aja nih bikin alurnya haha

Ada beberapa amanat juga, kaya kita tuh jadi orang ga boleh asal ngejudge orang. Semua manusia punya hidup dan masalah masing-masing. Everything is not what it seems. Dan semua orang pasti ngelakuin kesalahan. Hey we're not angels, aren't we? So harus bisa ya maafin orang walau sulit:)

Endingnya bagus sebenernya tapi...masa cuma gitu doang?!?!?

super fast, very cute read dealing with some very deep emotional issues in a realistic yet humorous fashion. Told through phone conversations and voicemail messages.

I was really intrigued by the concept of this book, you already know I love a plot that involves fate/destiny and I felt that Hung Up was going to feature this concept even if only via inference.

I’ve never heard of phone numbers being re-issued but I guess it does happen, so what does that mean when you are trying to contact someone but their number has now been issued to someone else. Top that with a connection to the person that now has that number. Do you see what I mean about the implied participation of fate/destiny. Lucy and James strike up a friendship via these phone calls. they seem poles apart to begin with and I have to say some of the things that James says are a little hard to take, especially about his feelings for his ex-girlfriend when he has established this connection with Lucy. I found him a little insensitive.

The story is set out in these telephone conversations rather than paragraphs – ie it is all dialogue – it does give the book an entirely different feel to anything I have read before. You develop a connection to the characters in a unique way. You get hurt when the other doesn’t answer the phone etc. This also means that there is no way of knowing if the character is being completely truthful in the things they are revealing about themselves.

From the synopsis we can already see that Lucy has a secret, all the way through the story this was playing on my mind. You are literally anticipating it to be anything. I really liked the way it played out and the actions and re-actions it initiated.

However, I did feel as if the ending was a little rushed and abrupt. I would really love to see what happens next with Lucy and James.

Hung Up is a very quick read, a little different and well worth reading.

Based on the total book: 1 star.

Well that was an awkward book. I was kind of looking forward to it though, the blurb sounded quite interesting, sadly, it was a false blurb.
The whole book is indeed about telephone conversations between 2 people, James and Lucy, sadly it felt like I was eavesdropping and a lot of the conversations just felt awkward and strange, like it wasn't meant to be shared.

Also, the characters... Sorry but Lucy was just freaking annoying. There were several things that I just didn't like about her. Like that she just assumed that if someone is sick that it means they have cancer. Like wait what? And how she kept dodging stuff, being hesitant to answer things or even share a picture (which I think is a healthy question from James, considering they have been calling for quite a few months). Also that she was full of stereotypes, yet didn't like it when James had stereotypes of his own.

James, well I didn't like him either. I found it a bit silly that he didn't care for anyone else their phone conversations but Lucy. What is so special about Lucy? Why pick Lucy out of the I don't know how many conversations that came in?

And that sudden plot twist near the end? Why? Was that really necessary? It only made the book more unbelievable for me.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this book.

4.5 Stars. I try not to let covers play a big role in selecting a book, but I know they do for a lot of people, and I fear the cute, very young cover for Hung Up will turn some readers off and that would be such a shame. I love how the cuteness of the cover let the actual content of the novel surprise me, I expected light and flirty, but then there was more, and all without “seeing” anyone’s faces, without eye contact or touching to convey emotion, the author only had her dialogue skills to rely on and that was plenty.

James and Lucy are high school kids, she calls his cell, it’s a wrong number, still, the conversation keeps going from there. At first, it’s all witty, sparky banter with just enough awkward sprinkled in that they seem like real humans rather than big screen rom-com characters who magically always have the perfect line at their disposal.

The more James and Lucy talk, the deeper their conversation and their connection grows, and so does the novel, the tone gradually shifts into serious territory, you so feel for both of them, you understand why they’d reach out through the telephone to a stranger, and you adore the note things end on.

But, I read it online.

I saw a physical copy at B&N, I perused the inside. It was basically a script. There is only dialogue between two people. I thought that was a really cool concept. I would write a book like that. But, I would probably want to include some action, like this.

The dialogue is super funny, but the ending had such a "cliff-hanger."

This was a cute story written through phone calls back and forth between the two main characters, Lucy and James. Lucy has ordered a plaque from a vendor and is calling to check the status of her order, only to discover that the phone number no longer belongs to the vendor, but to a guy her age. What follows are some unexpected phone calls between the two characters as they get to know each other entirely via phone.

It was a very interesting idea for a story, and I liked the fact that two characters met, got to know each other and developed feelings via phone without seeing each other. It totally on my love of people falling in love based on personality rather than looks.

I liked both characters. Lucy was a little quirky, and I found that refreshing, but I really felt that James' personality sparkled off the page. The story was unexpected, and what is revealed about each of them was unexpected.

The story was short, but the author did a great job with the time given. A very cute romance.

While I did enjoy this book and the writing, I kind of see, part of the plot twist coming.

This was an adorable story with a hint of dark secrets, I'm not going to lie my heart beat rose for a hot second and my eyes were teary here and there.

I enjoy the dialogue form that this book was written, so much that I read it in one sitting.

At first the book was okay, even though it was a totally unrealistic romance. Like, how the hell are you going to start a romance just on the phone in this day and age. The person could be really old for all you know or some sort of stalker. Hell, they could even change their voices to sound young for all you know.

Back to the point, it was okay at the start because how the book was different with only dialogue. Without description, the author had us get to know the characters by talking about their day and life, and how they talked. However, it got boring after a while. With all the dialogue, there was nothing different and there was nothing really happening. I wish there was more going on or more description. At least something. Sure it was nice to have them meet, but the ending, the way the author finished it off could have used some work.

Guys, as much as I find reviews with gifs awesome, I've never done one myself but this book seriously deserves one because this gif sums up my feelings pretty much after finishing it:

seriously

Duh.
Seriously. Seriously.
SERIOUSLY???

This was SO fucking bad, I still have no words. And the worst thing is I know that such books actually can work. If done right. But here? Not so much! Stupid story, flat and boring and not very nice protagonists and just very very very lame and boring!

Oh, and just a question: Did anybody find the romance? Or the so called love between those two? Because I didn't!

No, thank you!

This was a strange little story. I couldn't quite decide if I was impressed or slightly annoyed by the way it was written. Basically its just the two sides of a phone conversation. Only what is said. None of the thoughts or emotions or story background you would usually find in a book. It made it difficult for me to connect with the two characters but the twists were ok and it was quick and easy to read.

I read it free on pulseit.com so it wasn't to bad but I don't think I would have paid for it. Sorry.

Hung Up is definitely one of my favorites. This is the first book I have ever read that only has dialogues and nothing more – just dialogues, really. It made my imagination work vividly, not only on James and Lucy's physical appearance, but their voice, their feelings, and their emotions as well. You really need to get into it because there's no narration. Overall, I love reading this book and I probably am going to re-read it soon.

I know from reading several reviews that most people rated Hung Up poorly either because of the abrupt ending or the format of the book. First of all, I love unique formats such as this. I know they aren't super deep or anything, but I usually find them to be fun. As for the ending, I was totally okay with it. However, I also think it would be really cool to have a sequel that delves into their "in-person" relationship. Overall, 4 stars and I would absolutely recommend it to people who don't mind unique formats.

Liked the thought and the idea of the book. Did not care about anything between the two characters sadly.

I love stories that are told in unique ways. Meg Cabot’s stories told in all emails are my thing. So this story should have been gold for me. It wasn’t. I didn’t connect to either character and I didn’t care to connect to either one. Very upsetting for me.

Couldn't stop reading it.
The whole book is literally phone dialog, voicemails and a text. And I felt the story doesn't have a plot at all.
But I'd say this, it is a fun and cute read. And also this is a book that would make you laugh out loud. I certainly did. Seriously, this book is freaking hilarious.

This book doesn't deserve ANY stars but I gave it one to be nice. I would have hoped that when publishing a book it gets checked for grammar errors. Left and right there were misspelled words, I didn't even get farther in the book because I was so annoyed. This book definitely needs to be rechecked before published. A big thumbs down.
