I'm always confused as to how to rate these serial novels. How do you rate the first fifteen minutes of a movie, or the first line of a long joke? I want to rate this higher, but honestly, it was just okay. I felt like there was a whole long history and backstory with these two that was very much glossed over, and it was left lacking because of it.

Melanie used to be Rafe's secretary, and harbored a secret crush on him for years. She quit when he started a relationship with her best friend instead of her. The best friend is now with Rafe's brother. Now Melanie works as a barista in a coffee shop. Meanwhile, Rafe is only a billionaire businessman during the day. Apparently, he is a rock God by night. And he is also interested in Melanie, this fact made apparent by the way he hunts her down via her personnel file.

Not a whole lot happens in this first installment. Rafe finds Melanie, she plays coy and ditzy, he plays helpful and sexy, Melanie gets a tattoo and guess who's already getting a tat at the same tat shop? Now, they get to spend some extra time together.

3 Promising Stars!

The moment I read: “...rock musician by night and head of a multi-million dollar family business during the day” I was hooked! :D

Despite the fact this first instalment is really short...it did impress me. I thought it will be impossible to get into a story for only 42 pages but it happened. However I really hope the next one is a bit longer. If not...all the parts will be published as one whole book in September....so I will just wait for it ;)

Melanie had a great job but decided to quit because she is in love with her boss. She also wants to find what she really wants to do with her life. Before now she has always worked towards fulfilling her parents’ dreams and requirements. Now it’s time for her to start living! To experiment....to take some risks. And when she sees her former boss in a tattoo studio....the opportunity might just come out...

Rafe has never really noticed how sexy and intriguing his former assistant really is. But this changes after they spend some time together.

The story definitely has potential. I am still not sure about the heroine though...I hope she won’t annoy me...

A serial novel, that is quite promising and interesting! Maybe too short but still gives you something more than just a glimpse in the lives of its characters.

The story is a bit blurred mostly in Rafe's past with Jessica, and i must admit i wasn't very fond of that aspect, but let's forget that. Melanie always had a serious crush on her boss Rafe. After years of harboring hopes for something she would never act on she decides to leave the company she was working on and change her life..

The next time those two meet a spark comes alive and now they have to do something with the feelings they are hiding for so long..

THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK
- The writing is ok.
- I liked the ending..
- I think the tattoo was nice..
- Too many coincidences..
- I don't think i like Jessica..
- Rafe is compelling..
- Double POV, seriously i don't know how that fits in such a short book..

Melanie had a great job and was working for a boss that she loved, however, she loved him a little too much. When Rafe started dating another co-worker and Melanie's friend - Jessica. She quit her job as a PA and went to work as a barista as she couldn't stand watching the man she loved with someone else. Rafe never realized, it was like she was there one minute and gone the next. A few months have passed, and it's Melanie's birthday, her friend Jessica has stopped by with a gift voucher for a tattoo. Mel heads to the tattoo parlor and goes to get one by Charlie done, when in walks Rafe. He is in for another tattoo. Mel watches and then gets one of her own - a bird for freedom. I had to admit I did find this quite cliched as often in books the people who get tattoos go for birds as it symbolizes as I said freedom and escape. One thing leads to another, and Rafe stops by Mel's house and then leaves but not for long as the book ended on the cliffhanger of Rafe standing at Mel's door. At first, I wasn't sure what the title meant as there wasn't any real music theme to this book but we do get a sneak peek that before Rafe settled down, he was in a band. Episode #1 sets the premise for what we can imagine will be a budding romance eventually with a bit of spice between Mel and Rafe. Wanting a quick read and a new serial to start? Quick review for a quick read. This is the start to yet another serial novel that I've come across in the romance/erotica department and I have to say - for my first read of Opal Carew, this was rather good. The writing was tight, the characters were palpable. Only problem is that this story has backing on quite a bit of cliches, but I was able to forgive that because I liked both Melanie and Rafe enough to invest in their stories from this introduction.

Melanie is a woman who used to work in a corporate business, but left her job after her former boss Rafe started dating her best friend Jessica. Melanie not only saw it as a conflict of interest, but she was actually in love with him and didn't think he returned the sentiment at all. This shocks the heck out of Rafe and the two meet in the beginning of the serial novel at Melanie's new workplace. The story moves forward with some background on the characters, and while I've pretty much been almost burned out on the tattooed bad boy/singer/bossman/well-to-do love interest trope, Rafe really didn't come across as too bad a guy, he has a likable personality. But he was kind of threadbare for the presentation in this first installment. I kept thinking it was difficult to really see his character past the constructed cliches and it was a bit too good to be true.

Melanie's character was fine. I identified with her story since it was so individualized and tailored to her perspective points. Her interactions were natural and motivations/sentiments were clear. I think this is basically the set up to the scenario, and considering this is a serial novel, I'm willing to pick up the next part, but I do think it could have had a bit stronger hold past some of the cliched elements. It's still a nice, short read though, and I'm glad I picked it up.

Overall score: 3/5 stars

The first installment of another serial novella, clocking in at 42 pages all in all. Nothing happened yet. All I got was the name of the heroine, which was Melanie and the hero's name was Rafe. And just like what's written in the blurb, Rafe is rockstar by night and a multimillionaire businessman by day. Melanie was his former secretary. She's shy and has been in lurve with her boss forevah but he was still hung-up on some girl who happens to be Melanie's roommate.

Promising start but I really can't rate it any higher. For one, there's a lot telling rather than showing going on, which is one of my absolute pet peeve in the world. So 2 stars.

Quick review for a quick read…this is my first read by Opal Carew, and I really enjoyed it.

There was a lot packed into this first installment!

I really liked Rafe and Melanie. I’m a huge fan of characters who have a history, even if it’s not necessarily a romantic one. Melanie was running from an unrequited attraction to her boss–all the way from the empire he was part of to a coffee house in an effort to ‘find herself–’ or so she says. Rafe was so serious about his job that it wasn’t until she left and he pursued her to find out why that he realized his attraction to Melanie. They were both down to earth, and I liked the honest, friendly nature or their relationship.

Now that Rafe has finally woken up and realized how special Melanie is, I am excited to see what happens from here!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy

Release Date: 3rd June 2014

The first book in this new series from Opal Carew, featuring the characters from her His to Possess series.

Our leading lady is Melanie who is a bit of a wallflower, she has given up her job as personal assistant to the Adonis like Rafe due to her having a huge crush on him, she is happily working as a barista when he steps back in to her life.

Needing to get over her shyness, she decides to take the bull by the horns and to go after what she wants, this short novella tells the story of how she gets what she wants, and Rafe is ready and waiting.

As well as being extremely rich he is also a guitarist in a rock band and covered in sexy tattoos, if you like your romance with some rock thrown in, then this is for you.

My only problem was I got a little confused at the beginning as to who her friend Jessica is currently with, but I really should have read the His to Possess series, which I have added to my wish list!

3 stars!!

Since this one is too short, then my review would be too.

This was my first Opal Carew novel.. er.. novella.. er.. short pocket sized read.. or whatever you call a 42-page read. The cover got me, I gotta admit that. I didn't read the blurb 'cause I want it to be a surprise. And yes, I was surprised. Like.. icky surprised. I hate to say this but.. this one needs a lot more proof reading, or some editing. It was well-written, but it needs more kick. Some details were actually confusing like I had to think and think just to get what the author was trying to say. Some details weren't actually necessary, like.. it was just there.. just to prolong the whole paragraph.. I think?

But all in all, it managed to give me the interest to the read the sequel, which is Savage Kiss. Well, Rafe is this billionaire during day, but who knows that.. He's can be a rock star during the night.

ARC courtesy of NetGalley on behalf of the publishers

parts 1-5 read and reviewed together

in the His to Claim series, Opal Carew has provided another fun, sexy, easy to read story. following on from the His to Possess series, this one follows Melissa & Rafe. as always, there's the ups and downs of a new (maybe) relationship, with plenty of hot chemistry between them.

only trouble is, I only have ARC's for the first 5 parts & now I'm left hanging, at a critical moment in the story, waiting impatiently for the last instalment to get to the HEA! well, there better be a HEA in there anyway!! :)

I read the first book/serial His to Posses and remember Jessica (her bff) and Dane (his bro) but I don't remember Melanie. I feel like I should. That being said...this was a nice start to the serial. I like where it ended with a knock on the door. Now on to the second installment

I’m a lot more interested in this relationship dynamic than I was with Jessica and Dane. With those two, it felt purely physical. And while I don’t doubt that the author is going to turn this series into pure smut eventually, right now I’m really enjoying the conversations between Rafe and Melanie.

DNF @60% And since this is a super short book, that saying something.

I didn't get it. I kept thinking that this was book 2, or a spinoff of a different series that I wasn't aware of. I seriously backtracked three times to figure out who Jessica was with, and I still don't know. And the guy is a rockstar? The only way the reader knows that is based on the blurb, before it just gets tossed into a conversation that he was apparently big enough to be travelling all over the world with it. You can't just toss in a detail like that without some kind of background!

Apparently you need to read His to Posses in order to get Storm&Jessica's story. These are my 1st books from this author.

Melanie was/is Jessica's BFF. At one point they worked together and since Storm, the ex-boss, aka Rafe Ranier, chose Jessica over her, Melanie's jealousy gets the best of her and she quits working with him at Ranier Industries. Says she needed a new change in life.

"I'm not like you. I don't know what I have a passion for -yet- but I do know that I want to be free of rules, and as you said, the nine-to-five existence."

She never told Jessica and of course not Rafe of the real truth of why she quit. I guess whatever Jessica and Rafe also had didn't last long because she is now engaged to his brother Dane. I think I may need to read some of her previous books. So Melanie, why don't you jump his ass like you want to? Not into your friend's sloppy seconds? I get it. He didn't chose you, but hey girl, she didn't chose him either.

These 2 have some "finding" to do. They need to find out if they should trust their hearts or what's between their legs because it seems they want each other bad. Rafe used to be in a band, Savage Kiss. How hot is that? Ex-Rock Star goes suit&ties. Double Hawtness. He left his dream behind to follow on his fathers footsteps. He doesn't regret leaving the band. Knew he'd always want to for live what his father created. So why is he after Melanie now? She's on to you buddy. Driving all across town to buy coffee where Melanie is now a Barista. Smooth move Rafe. Very smooth!

Although they haven't even touched each other, yet, it's apparent how bad their connection is. As if they are physically drawn to one another. Jessica gave Melanie a gift card to a tattoo shop, Devil's Ink. Being a tattoo Virgin, she decides it's time she gets the tattoo she's been wanting. Who other than no other is at the shop? You guessed right Rafe. Because remember it's not hot enough he was an ex-band member, not hot enough he wears a suit&tie, but he also has tattoos. Oh, and he drives a motorcycle...Lawd Jesus. I may turn into pixie dust when these 2 collide and finally go at it.

"I don't want to fall into old patterns. I want to push the limits on everything I do. At least, for a while."

The tension is building. They have now shared dinner, tattoos and a nice motorcycle ride. Rafe, I think you have her panties in your hands already. Play the cards right. Melanie don't give it up so easily. Make him work for it. I know he's hot, but try. Tell your vagina to hold off a little longer. I've been enjoying many short stories lately. Love their I get right to the point stories. Love it when they end in cliffys because that means I'm going to read the next one. Crossing my fingers the other books after this don't disappoint me. Happy Readings!

I not really sure how I feel about this serial series when the first installment left me feeling like I entered into the middle of a discussion.

Synopsis:
Rafe is apparently and multimillionaire by day and a hopeful rock star by night. Melanie is his former secretary who quit her job after she fell in love with him, but he fell for her friend Jessica, who apparently is now dating his brother. She's now a barista and supposedly living a free life, but it seems like she's really just running away from her feelings. When they pump into one another at the tattoo studio quick flirty exchanges take place that lead both, Melanie and Rafe to wonder what may become of them.

he Best Thing:
There is a build-up happening between Rafe and Melanie and I can't wait to see how it plays out. This quick story did not leave me panting for more, but I'm determined to read the entire story and see if my stars will increase.

The Worst Thing:
This was way too short for me...thank god I got the entire series!

The first few pages of the story was a little confusing for me. I wasn't sure if I was misreading or if actual events really happened. So Melanie was Rafe's assistant at his company, and her friend Jessica was Mr. Rainer's, Rafe's brother, assistant. Melanie secretly fell in love with Rafe who fell in love with Jessica and dated her? (So is this the same Jessica or a different Jessica?) Isn't Jessica suppose to be close friends with Melanie, and if so, why is Jessica now telling Melanie to try her hand at Rafe while she is off dating Dane. I'm so confused For me things were not clear and I wasn't sure if maybe that was intentional or if I misread something, or if there was a major mix-up.

Also, we meet Rafe as a sexy businessman and then are thrown off by his bad-boy appearance at the tattoo shop...this was not a smooth transition. The way his past was integrated into the scene from the tattoo studio to dinner was kind of weird. Again, maybe all of this can be attributed to the shortness of book one, but I'm not too sure.

Rafe “Storm” left to find himself after his father passed away. Now Melanie left her job at Ranier Industries after knowing that Rafe was never going to pay attention to her. Now it’s her turn to find herself.

Melanie was the secretary to the man that she loved but she needed to leave her job because Rafe was in love with her bestfriend, Jessica. From the moment that he laid eyes on Jessica he was head over heels over her and Melanie knew nothing would ever happen between them. Melanie loves art and oh boy can she draw and now with all her extra time and no time constraint she can find herself. She has always done what was expected of her and now it was time for her to live her life the way she wanted.

Rafe seeks out Melanie at her new job because he needs to find out why she left her job. He made her aware that no matter what she will always have a job at Ranier Industries. He never would have thought that he would be running into Melanie at a tattoo parlor. He needed to move on with his life and remove something that meant everything to him and someone else. Then Melanie surprised him with what she was going to have tattooed and where. The moment that he saw that white, creamy place his thoughts became wicked.

His to Claim: No Strings is a great start to Melanie’s and Rafe’s story and beautifully written. I really enjoyed seeing these characters again and seeing that Rafe is attracted to Melanie. It seems he could have always been but he could have suppressed his feelings. The chemistry between Rafe and Melanie is evident. Ms. Carew has a way with words and with that a way for me to get lost for a little while in a different world.

I happily recommend this story. It’s a great start to a beautiful love story.

His To Claim: Parts 1-5 by Opal Carew

This is a series of novellas. I have read parts 1-5. The sixth part is not out yet and this series has cliffhangers.

Rafe is a musician and it really is a balm to his soul. The band has just made it big but he has decided to go home to help his brother run their corporation. That's right, he's a billionaire too. He muscled, tattooed and sexy.while he was back home at his company, he had an assistant named Melanie. She was invaluable to him at work. She left because she harbored feelings for him she knew he'd never return. She's a bit of a free spirit and really wants to be an artist. Rafe never knew the the reason for her leaving.

He missed Melanie and went to see her at her new job as a barista. When he sees her,he finally really sees her and he wants her. Melanie is apprehensive but thrilled with the knowledge that Rafe wants her. She's loved him for so long and now her dreams coming true. She doesn't trust it but she's more than willing to go along for the ride. Rafe's been fooled by love before and tells himself he wants a fling only.

I wavered back and forth with how I felt about the book while reading it. I liked it, then I didn't,then I did and then I didn't. The character's fault irritated me a lot of the time. Melanie was insecure, unsure of how to get what she wanted and tempted by other men. She even let them kiss her! Rafe was untrusting sometimes thoughtless. I mean the sex was hot, the chemistry was good but the story was just so-so. Will I come back for part six? Only if I get it for free.

Warning for the less adventurous readers: this series contains a foursome.

Title: No Strings
Author: Opal Carew
Publisher/Year: St Martin Press / Macmillan 6/3/14
Length: 27 Pages
Series: His to Claim #1

Overview

Rafe Ranier was my boss and secret crush. A rock musician by night and head of a billion dollar empire by day, Rafe could have any woman he wanted. But I was just the shy secretary he never noticed. For years I obsessed over him, until I finally realized I had to walk away. I needed to break from the secure life I’d always known to discover who I really was.

I never expected Rafe to follow me.

Now I’m on the road with his band, Savage Kiss, and all my secret fantasies are coming true. But I fear I’ve made a huge mistake, because if I get any more attached to a man I can never truly have, my heart will be broken beyond all repair.

My Thoughts

It's been a while since i was involved in this series - or these characters for that matter, so it took a few seconds to jog my memory - but i'm glad that i've come across this ARC from Netgalley.

If you'll remember, we met Melanie, Rafe and his brother Dane and girlfriend Jessica in the last series His to Possess. Now we get to begin the story of Rafe and Melanie, and that's where this first novella installment takes us.
Melanie used to work for Rafe but quit her job and is getting a better idea of what it means to be free and independent. The question that we'll get to see answered i hope is whether Rafe will be able to help her discover her freedom and inner self and what that will mean for everyone. at only 25 pages or so, there's not much that we get to see yet, but at least it's a nice introduction, all brought together from a tattoo and a motorcycle. Enjoy!

In the first of 6 books by Opal Carew, we meet Rafe Ranier and Melanie Taylor. Melanie used to work for Rafe as his assistant, but when her attraction for him became too much, and he decided to date her roommate Jessica, instead, Melanie quit.
Now Jessica is engaged to Rafe's brother Dane (something that was incredibly confusing since Melanie refers to both men as Mr. Ranier in the beginning of the book), and Rafe is looking for Melanie, who happens to be working at a coffee shop near her former office. This particular book focused solely on Melanie trying to move on with her life, by getting a tattoo, and who does she meet at the tattoo parlor, but Rafe. Rafe stays with Melanie while she gets her tattoo, then he takes her out to dinner. Back at her apartment, they kiss, and then Jessica interrupts them. End of book 1.
I have to say, this was a pointless short story. Nothing happened except Melanie got a tattoo and she drooled all over Rafe. I get the point of short stories, but most short stories I've read before have a beginning, middle and end. This one had a beginning and a middle. I'm not sure if authors make more money by dragging out series like these, but I just read another short story series where each book was over 100 pages, and had depth. This, so far, is less than 50 pages and has nothing. I'm hoping the next few books are more interesting, especially since this series is billed as an erotic series.

I rated this as 3/10 or 1.5 stars.

When I requested this from NetGalley I wasn't aware that it was so short, I knew it was the first in a series and did expect it to be longer. This is more like reading a longer chapter in a book than it being the first in a series of short stories that make up the His to Claim erotic series of 6 stories.

Where do I start, well a while ago I posted a question on my blog ~ Do you ever feel that an Author or Publisher is milking it? I am sad to say in this case I think it is a clear case of milking it. I would have preferred the seires to have been one full length book based on reading this.

The short story is about Rafe Ranier (aka Storm from a group called Savage Kiss) and his relationship with a past employee of his called Melanie. Melanie had feelings for Rafe and is one of the reasons that she left her job behind and took a temporary position working as a barista.

Her life becomes more complicated when Rafe turns up in the coffee shop and feelings that hadn't disappeared are rekindled and taken to a new level.

This isn't necessarily the best written short story that I've read but it did set the scene for the following stories in the series, which I will be reading to find out where the Author is taking us on this journey.

I was given an ARC copy of this by NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Melanie leaves her well paying job to pursue her art, but more importantly because she was in love with her boss Rafe “Storm” Rainer”. She has been pining over him for a few years. At one point Rafe started dating her best friend Jessica. Melanie just needed a change of pace so she decides to work at a coffee shop as a Barister. When one day, Rafe shows up at her coffee shop. They have a conversation as why she left his place of employment. She told him she just needed more freedom to pursue her art.

Her friend Jessica (who is now engaged to Rafe’s brother, Dane) gives a gift certificate to a tattoo parlor. Jessica knows that Melanie has wanted a tattoo so what a better gift. Who enters the tattoo parlor, none other than Rafe. They both have a nice chat and stay for one another ask each get their tattoo’s done. He invites her to dinner and they share a sweet kiss in her apartment, but he leaves after Jessica shows up at Melanie’s place.

There is some serious sexual attraction between these two. I like Ms. Carew’s writing style, she gets to the heart of the matter between these two. I can’t wait for the sexy times. On to novella 2.

3 stars.

It's always tough to rate these serials, and I always prefer to wait for the full length novel. The main difference between these serials and a novella is that usually a novella features a complete story. Like a one-shot. But serials are like a full story broken up into chapters. This is like reading fic, without Edward.

Okay now that I've got that out of the way, here's the story. Melanie stopped working for Rafe a while ago when Rafe hooked up with Melanie's best friend. She's always had a thing for him, and now Rafe has one for her, too. They run into each other in a tattoo shop after he's already tried to woo her. Let's see what happens next.

This is a promising start to what I'm sure is going to be a fun story. He's a billionaire businessman by day, rock god by night. What could go wrong?

No Strings by Opal Carew is the first novella in her His to Claim series. A good start to the series that definitely has me intrigued, but also a little confused. I was a little lost over the connection between Melanie and Jessica, and then between Jessica and Rafe. Is Rafe's ex the same Jessica that is Melanie's Bestie that is now with Rafe's brother? what?!?! But apparently there was a previous series that i have NOT read that probably would have explained all this to me had I read that.

The honorable behavior that Rafe exhibits by respecting Melanie as his employee and the opportunity that now exists for them as she is no longer off-limits is intriguing and I will definitely be moving on to book 2 to see where this goes.

I'm hoping it heats up pretty soon, and if it picks up from exactly where this one left off there's a massive potential for that.

Final thoughts, another series released in small parts so if that's not your thing, wait for them all to be released. Intriguing hough that I want to read more.

His to Claim is a mini series of short stories about Melanie and Rafe. Melanie is a sweet, shy woman who fell in love with her boss now ex boss. She quit when said boss not only never noticed her feelings, but fell in love with her best friend. It didn't work out but it still tore her apart. Now she works as a barista in a coffee house and one day in walks no other than Rafe himself wanting to know why she quit to work in a coffee house that pays her way less than he did. She says it's because she needs more freedom to do things she couldn't working at a nine-to-five she couldn't tell him it was because she fell for him.

Another chance meeting has them spending more time together and Rafe finally noticing her as more than an ex employee, and more as the beautiful woman she is.

If you don't have the next books in the series I would suggest waiting until you do before starting. These books are addicting and hard to put down. Rafe is the big tatted bike riding, rock star at night and millionaire businessman during the day. Melanie is sweet and shy one minute and free spirited and daring whenever she is around Rafe. All in all they are a sexy couple that are hard to stop reading about. Savage Kiss is the next book in the series.
