This is an exciting fantasy about four children who are stranded in a mysterious gothic house. There are wolves prowling at the door and escape seems impossible, until they discover a whole new world under the house. With the help of the inhabitants, the rats, who live there, the children realize there might be one last chance at freedom after all.
This seems earlier than a 1991 novel. Sort of. It's got an Abridged Gormenghast feel to it. It's really quite good. It's for middle to upper primary with a quirky and gothic plot.
Because I'm so conscious of the physical beauty of a book (or lack thereof) as I'm reading it, I'm always a little suspicious of my reactions to a crummy copy... the edition I read is on cheap pulpy paper, in coarse print and with a rubbish cover... would I have actually rated the writing higher if the production of the book had been better? It's possible. I guess I'll never know.
Sadly my kids probably won't be tempted to read it either, because of the cover, (It's not the wolf edition shown here) and they would probably enjoy it.
This book totally surprised me. It was at times really scary... a lonely, semi-abandoned mansion, surrounded by wolves and invaded by enemies. It was a page-turner. I think the characters are also well developped considering the book's lenght. Something different to read.
