The Marquis of Lyndhurst is tired of women who are more attracted to his title and money than to his charms. So when his mother requests that he go to the Isle of Wight to court another eligible woman, Ryker decides on a little game … his cousin Robby will pose as him, and he will pose as his cousin—a rake and a gambler. If the woman falls in love with him, it will be for himself. Only then will he reveal who he is.
What the marquis doesn’t expect, however, is someone like Jewelene. Lovely and provocative, intelligent and headstrong, Jewels cares not for status and wealth. Ryker finds her irresistible, and she finds herself falling for the handsome man she believes to be the marquis’ cousin.
But Jewelene is playing a game of her own. In a daring bid to repay her family’s debts, each night she poses as Babette, the French card dealer. When Ryker begins flirting with the sultry Babette, Jewelene realizes she has become her own rival. If she reveals the truth, will her house of cards come tumbling down?
Kindle freebie: I read parts and skimmed the rest. Totally and completely unrealistic Regency sex romp. By that I mean that both the behavior of the characters and the sex scenes were unbelievable. Oh please.
To add to the unbelievability of it all, there's a crazy subplot where the heroine takes a job in a gambling house--like that's going to really happen in Regency times--but it's all good, because she's so well disguised with a mask and wig and a French accent. Ooh la la! A moustache-twirling villain adds to all the fun. Okay, maybe not literally, but you KNOW he WANTED to have a moustache to twirl while he was cackling with evil laughter and whipping his cape around and imagining how he was going to sadistically beat and despoil the heroine.<----this last part is true.
This wasn't actually that bad as my rating might imply. I just had the feeling I was reading a comedy of the knee-slapper kind, and not a Regency romance. And this not only in regard to the wannabe-villain, and the heroine taking a job in a gambling house. But the sex-scene was so hilariously funny, I marked the whole passage on my reading device so I can always come back to it when in need of something to laugh out loud about: "You beauty, you-..." Hunger vibrated through her body.Wanting beat a drum so loudly all she could hear was the need it spelled. She felt only him as she experienced raw passion while his tongue moved..., sending her into a convulsion of pleasure she had never dreamt possible. ..., and she exploded with a shout of ecstasy she had never imagined she could feel. She had closed her eyes during her pleasurable aftershocks, and when she opened them she saw that he had released his huge cock...
*a short commercial break with some muzak in the background while I'm off to wipe the Coke away which I snorted all over the screen...*
OK, let's get serious again!
They raised horses at Henshaw, and she knew just what a cock looked like and what it was for. She stared at it a long moment, marveling at its size and girth."Stroke this, love..."he said in a throaty, fever-pitched tone. And she did, and the feel of it made her shudder once again. ...
And finally, this one will always and forever have a special place in my heart: "You hot beauty, you - you perfect girl..."*sigh*
So I purchased this book from amazon, and on the kindle parents are how you know how far in you are. Rogues, Rakes & Jewels ends around 60%, so this really is a quick read to pick up late one night. From the first sentence of this novel I was pulled in, and I hope you will too. Once again Claudy Conn gives us a romance of two characters that are complete opposites. Jewelene is the strong female character in this story. Her characters as quick, witty, and genius. Ready to ruin her image she earns money to help her family get through their tough spot. We have the Marquis of Lyndhurst, Ryker, who deceives most of the characters throughout the book because he wants to find ‘true love’. Both character had their faults, but together they pulled through to create a happy ending. Then we finally have the bad guy, who I declare, cannot be named. He was one that would make you wince at his tactics, and shout when he was forced back by Ryker. A sizzling romance that will leave you satisfied can be found on amazon and smashwords. Be sure to check it out and if you like it leave a review. Amazon:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008... Smashwords: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/...
Another very enjoyable read by Claudy Conn. Rogues, Rakes & Jewels was a wonderful love story between Jewelene, (Jewels) our heroine and our handsome and gorgeous hero, the Marquis of Lyndhurst, (Ryker).
The romance between the two sizzle from the moment they meet.
I loved this story of Jewels and Ryker and found it impossible to put down. From start to finish I was hooked and absolutely fell in love with the characters. This is another great book by Claudy and I definitely recommend it. I know that you will love it as much as I did. :)
This book is a must read if you never read any of Claudy Conn's books read this one for sure.
I loved it.
The Marguis of Lyndhurst, Ryker, goes to Isle of Wight to court Jewelene at the request of his mother. Being put out because all women seems to want is his wealth and position he decided to make this courtship a tab different.
He request is cousin Robby to fill in for him. In other words to switch places when it comes to courting Jewelene. Being a gambler, Robby finds this to be fun so the switch is made.
Jewelene, known as Jewel is very head strong and intelligent and she falls for Robby who of course is pretending to be Ryker.
Jewel has some secrets of her own as she is also living a double life and is a French card dealer on the side so she can earn money to help her family. She goes by Barbette as the card dealer.
This is a lively story and sometimes funny beyond words. I won't give any spoilers how this ends but I liked the ending and the whole story line was awesome. Claudy conn...you did it once again and gave us a great book.

REVIEW
As with most of Claudy Conn’s regency books we get a big ole barrel of laughs, strong females and tons of passion.
In this story we have Jewelene and Ryker. Jewelene has to find a way to save the family and in doing so she becomes a card dealer by the name of Babette ..
Ryker is wealthy man but he has not let that be known and has basically traded places with his cousin.
Things will not come easy however as there are a few who wish to take her down. And so we have mystery and intrigue also.
Oh and I will not forget passion. The passion and fireworks that go off between Jewel and Ryker is RED HOT !!!!
Claudy Conn never lets me down! This book was a great read! Ryker and Jewels were so easy to fall in love with. Both leading a masquerade; him because he wants someone who loves him, not his money, and her because her family is on the brink of financial ruin. One-click and see the scrapes they get into! Intrigue, Danger and Passions abound!
I really enjoyed this freebie. Claudy Conn is a new author to me even though I now see that this is a re-publication of an earlier work originally published in the 1970's. This does not detract in any way from the fact that I enjoyed this story.
Jewels (our h) is spunky, beautiful, and doesn't give one whit about marrying. She's far more interested in horses, protecting her younger brother, and paying off her late father's gambling debts. You see, she has this horse... a horse that might win the Derby and she needs seed money to enter the race. And well, as you might have predicted... she doesn't have the money. Jewels is nothing if not crafty and imaginative in the length she goes to earn cash. Her plan isn't the worst or the most dangerous that I've read in other Regency romances, but she will need our H to save her a time or two, and this will put our h/H together, which is what we want in a Regency: crazy scenarios in which our couple are alone and unsupervised.
Ryker (our H) has been sent to the Isle of Wight to meet the daughter of one of his mother's late friends. Before he travels there, though, he has (what he presumes) the brilliant idea of having his cousin (Robby) pose as him, The Marquis of Lyndhurst. Ryker is tired of women only wanting him because of his title and wealth. He's also drop dead gorgeous. :) The poor guy!
I don't think I'm spoiling anything by saying that this plan backfires in his face when he realizes the beautiful--and independent--Jewels has exactly zero interest in marrying him or anyone else. However, the plan is already in motion and he can't correct anything. However, sparks fly for our h/H as they find themselves embroiled in Jewels' hijinks as she poses as Babette, a French card dealer in her friend, Ben's gambling establishment. So, we have a case in which our h/H are both posing as other people. Consider it a double-mistaken identity plot. I loved it.
Also, complicating matters is our story's bad guy: His plan isn't the most original--I found it to be rather predictable--but I felt his actions were on par with what someone in his position might have done.
Side characters have a bit of a story in that Elizabeth and Ben seek their own HEA, even though they do not receive their own POVs. Jewels' brother (Sir James) is loving and caring and his actions do him credit as he does what he does in order to protect Jewels. He doesn't like the fact that his sister acts more like his mother, or that she's taken on all of the pressure and stress of correcting their father's gambling mistakes, so he and a friend (Arthur) decide to get the seed money on their own so Jewels doesn't have to sell their mother's emeralds. Robby, our H's cousin and the man presenting himself as the Marquis of Lyndhurst, is present for a few scenes but I felt like we barely got to know him. I would have loved a scene or two where he needed to extricate himself (or defend himself) as others talked to him as if he were the real Marquis. While Robby's discomfort is mentioned, I didn't feel it whatsoever as he pretended to be his titled cousin.
The one thing that made this 1/2 star less was that the dialog was, at times--well, multiple times--extremely cheesy. Too many "Upon my souls" and "Upon my word" during Ryker and Robby's conversations, and "Old girl" style dialog between Jewels and her brother. I found myself rolling my eyes a couple of times.
I'll also admit to skimming the sexual parts. They didn't seem to flow well and I often skip the bedroom scenes in Regency romances. While I found that our h/H had natural chemistry, I felt that their declarations of love came almost out of nowhere. I was left with the feeling that maybe since I skimmed the sexual scenes that I missed a well-placed thought, dialog, or action.
Overall, I enjoyed this story and I'm delighted it was free on Amazon. I plan to read more from this author in the future.
Let me try to say something about this book that I haven't already said about all of the other books Claudy has. She is so consistent in delivering hits.
First I just gotta say I adore Claudy's book titles. They are very catchy :)
Her regency romance's are superb. She belongs at the top in this genre.
In Rogues, Rakes, and Jewels we get a unique story line. I laughed to myself and then thought "How does Claudy come up with all of these ideas?" This story was sexy and fun.
Ryker of Lyndhurst is a handsome lord. He doesn't want his mother interfering and trying to set him up with someone. He believes he is not ready to get married. So Ryker and his cousin decide to pull a sly joke on the Henshaw family. But once Ryker gets to the Henshaw's he quickly realizes that he made the wrong decision and now he is stuck with Jewels believing he is someone else.
Jewels is a beautiful blonde, green eyed beauty. She has a lot of responsibility since her parents died. When the Lord Of Lyndhurst and his cousin visit she starts to feel things she has never felt before. She is afraid if she opens up to Ryker he find out her secrets and leave her.
I was hooked from the very beginning. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I loved the family bond Jewel's and her brother Jimmy had. Jimmy was such a great brother. I would love to read about Lizzie and Ben's relationship. Claudy always gives her secondary characters enough room to shine making them fun to read about.
Favorite sentences "Spoiler Alert"
"Could I look into those bright green eyes of yours and not know the woman I love...?"
"Jewels saw him, standing like the knight in shining armor she had always dreamt would come for her. He filled the doorway, faith, she thought, he filled the room! He was a mountain of volcanic fury"
Jewelene Henshaw (who is such a minx and hoyden)lives with her brother Sir James Henshaw. The Honorable Oscar Robendale (Robbie)their cousin and guardian until Sir James comes of age are quite the trio. The father was a gambler and had left them in debt. They come up with a scheme to make money so they can run their horse in a race since they are certain the horse can win. Jewels becomes a faro dealer known as Babette to help make some money and which causes some problems.
Enter the Marquis of Lyndhurst who is turning 30 and needs a wife and heir. He is a rake and libertine and feels all women want him just for his riches. He decides to offer for Jewels since he knows they are in need of money but decides to change places with his cousin so Jewels thinks the cousin is him. Needless to say he's sorry he did that for as you can guess, he falls for Jewels. Add to the mix, the nefarious Lord Omsbury who wants Jewels for himself and will stop at nothing to get her.
The plot thickens and the fun begins. The book has it all-funny, passion, danger and fabulous characters. True Claudy style, you're pulled in from the beginning to the end. I enjoyed this book so much I hated the story to end.
Rogues, Rakes & Jewels by Claudy Conn Marquis Ryker of Lyndhurst is sent to the Isle of Wight by his mother as she wants him to meet some country chit. He drags his cousin along, the Honorable Oscar Robendale but comes up with the plan to let Robby be him. He believes every woman only wants him for his title and wealth...not that he's not a handsome man...he is. He’s intrigued and surprised with the chit he finds at the Henshaw house though. Will his switch backfire on him?
Sir James and Jewelene Henshaw have been left orphans and with debts. Papa liked to gamble a bit much. They have a light at the end of the tunnel though, Lightening their race horse. They just have to get his entrance fees to the derby. Thus enters...Babette. Jewels solution. Or Babette could just add more to their troubles.
Of course there is Lord Omsbury who will do anything to make Jewel his. Anything! A book full of unique characters as usual. And of course there is always the confusion that lies bring into a story. This isn’t a real long book but it’s packed with adventure and romance. **Sexual situations http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...

With Jewelene's family almost destitute, she know she should just marry the wealthy Lord but her heart won't allow it. So she devises a plan to get her family out of debt. That is until see meets Ryker and her plan begins to unravel.
The Marquis of Lyndhurst is sent to the Isle of Wight by his mother to meet yet another grasping female who wants his money and title. He is sick of this and devises a plan for his cousin to play the Marquis and for the Marquis to play as his cousin. He thinks Jewelene will fawn all other the man she thinks is the Marquis, but of course, he would be wrong. He finds himself very attracted to Jewels and regrets his deception, but Jewels has a deception of her own.
There is the typical bad guy in the Claudy Conn historicals who will stop at nothing to get what he wants, including many nefarious deeds that the Marquis must move to stop.
This is a quick read and I love them. Lots of fluff and nonsense, but a wonderful escape for a few hours.
This book is so up to Claudy Conn’s standards / I am a big fan and have not read one book that she has written that has in any way disappointed me, this one is no exception. When Ryker the Marquis of Lyndhurst is ask to court Jewelene or Jewel , he is not happy . He seeks a conspiracy with his cousin Robby to make like he is Ryker. Then there is Jewel she has secrets of her own. She has many faces . Put this all together with a great storyline and you have a very entertaining book. It is full of excitement and twist and deception. I laughed a lot at times. Hard to review this one without giving spoilers way. I do recommend it highly. If you have not read any of this authors books, treat yourself a treat. This is a good one to start with.
I was gifted Claudy Conn’s Rogues, Rakes, and Jewels to review. Being a huge fan of Jane Austen, with Emma and Pride and Prejudice being two of my favorite romance novels I was thrilled when Claudy sent me her regency romance to review. This novel had everything; danger, a villain, twists, and more secrets between characters then I could count. I really enjoyed the story and the strong female lead. One thing that I will say about Conn’s Regency romance is this is no Jane Austen. There was serious heat in the book between the main characters. That just made this an even better regency piece. I recommend it for a fun and delightful read. I will look to read her other Regency romances now.
The Marquis of Lyndhurst (Ryker as his friends call him) is rich, handsome and charming. He's also wearied of the women his mother throws in his path hoping he'll catch one and settle down. His mother is at it again, wanting him to visit the children (i.e., Marriageable Daughter) of a deceased friend. So off he goes with the promise that this will be the last time. But he also has a plan to thwart his mother - switching places with his cousin. And then he meets the daughter. Jewelene is not a female grasping for money - or at least not by way of marriage.
And so the story goes until the end but I don't know how to say more without giving away too much.
This novel is more Mills and Boon than Regency Romance. To be fair, it was a free download and when I got round to reading it I had forgotten the details so began reading in the hope it was like a Georgette Heyer. It's not. Regency romp sums it up better but I found it lacked depth, detail and plot while numerous inaccuracies in character, dialogue and dress irritated me. I'm going back to Georgette Heyer.
I love period pieces. This one features a strong young woman who is willing to buck the norm society has for women to try and save herself and her family. She meets a man who is also bucking society and they become entwined to save each other.
A raucous, romantic roller coaster ride! From beginning to end, non-stop fun and frivolity. A wonderful, engrossing, amazing read! Hands down one of her best regencies.
Very inconsistent narrative such as when one armed Ben "crossed his arms over his chest". Also the love making was nigh on impossible to imagine as it defied the difficulty of one handedly raising up a skirt and petticoat while both people remain standing and kissing and all the grabbing of her "butt" was rather crude.
Easy read. Evil Lord desires beautiful Lady who has a money problem. Ho, hum! Cousins trading places try to make story interesting. Seems pretty simple who will win. Nothing special about this book
Hiding the fact that he was a Marquis Ryker went to the Isle of Wright to meet Jewels, whose mother was a friend of his mother. Hoping for a love match.
