The battle between Gon's team and Genthru's team concluded! Our protagonists planned on taking the opponent in a one-on-one fight. We got to see Bisky's real appearance, a very visible opposite to her small fragile physique. I loved her even more! Killua got to test his electric aura and even showed us his new fighting tool, his yo-yo! As expected of him, he was able to analyzed in details on how he would take down his opponent while in the midst of fighting. Gon's fight with Genthru was also nerve-wracking. We can see once again how reckless Gon was when he sacrificed his own hands for an unplanned part of his fight. His main role was to lure Genthru in a specific location, but before he did that, he sure took a very serious injuries because of his rebellious behavior. They won the battle at the end despite lacking experience, well at least in Gon and Killua's case. It was a very worthy and deadly battle just to win a single virtual game.

And now that they've won the whole game, and by the way the very first players who've won the game since the game's creation, they are allowed to select three cards to bring outside the game. Bisky chose the blue gem while Killua and Gon thought of a very smart move to get to Ging's location through the remaining two cards. Bisky turned down the offer of going with the kids and they parted ways. I'll seriously miss Bisky as she's one of the best supporting characters in HxH. I'm going to wait for her next appearance.

Though the two kids' planned on using the Accompany card to get to Ging's location, Ging tricked them well. Instead, they met Kite. Oh, Kite! I can't believed I'm already in this part of the story. Greed Island arc is now over and the Chimera Ant arc has now begun! It's going to get real dark soon.

The battle between Gon and Gen was well done. Even after all that training, the only way Gon stands a chance is if he takes stupid risks and relies on clever tricks. And it took 180+ chapters, but we've finally gotten the traditional shonen arc climax where our hero overcomes the odds to beat the villain. But even then, Gon's prize for winning Greed Island didn't play out how he wanted. I love how this series never takes the cheap or stereotypical route with its storytelling. It may play at Shonen tropes, but there's always some sort of twist or complication or unexpected result. I don't know if I'd call it a deconstruction of Shonen, but Hunter x Hunter is definitely a response to it. It shows what can be done when you don't take genre conventions at face value and take off your shackles as a storyteller. Seeing some of the stuff Togashi pulls out for this series reminds me of when Rock Lee dropped the weights or Luffy first used Gear 2. Like a boundary we didn't even know existed had been broken. And it's not necessarily broken in some big obvious way, but with interesting surprises and wrinkles along every step of the way- with a freewheeling approach to telling this story and introducing what it has to offer.

In keeping with that, we charge headlong into the next arc without missing a beat. It's stunning how deftly Togashi shifts between these two arcs. The moment he's done with Greed Island's epilogue, we are literally warped into the next arc. And it starts with such strong intrigue. Some horrifying ant monster is building up her army and has developed a taste for human flesh. Maybe it's just because bugs freak me out, but this new villain is immediately feels ominous and dangerous. I can't wait to see what comes next. It feels like Gon and Killua are rushing to find a monster they can't begin to handle.

omg after months I FINALLY continued this series, took me long enough. Bisky revealed her full power and of course she absolutely slayed, as expected. Gon has officially gone insane (and I know it's only gonna get worse, I'm so not ready for the emotional damage), then Killua and Gon friendship peaked again, I love themmmm. Also they finally cleared the game, I'm kinda relieved because this whole greed island arc is so complicated and confusing...
Now they met Kite again omg. I'm also so not ready for his storyline... the emotional damage is gonna be unbearable, help. Also, worst-father-award goes to Ging, this man can get fucked for real, aaaaaaand: chimera ant arc (aka "feels-like-togashi-was-on-drugs-while-writing-and-drawing-this-because-it's-so-weird"-arc) has begun! This is gonna be so wild, as I've seen the anime I know what's gonna happen and I am SO READY for it (I mean...apart from all the emotional damage mentioned above...)

ps: I miss Leorio and Kurapika, my boysssss, the group has to reunite pls

In this volume, we got the conclusion of the Greed Island arc, and the introduction of a new arc - with a new villain ;D

With everything "Greed Island" coming to a conclusion in this, I was curious to see whether Gon might finally get to meet his father, and there was a lot of build-up to get to that point. We had the conclusion of the battle with the bombers, and got to see just how much Kil and Gon had improved (AGAIN, there is no limit to these kids, I swear) - and in particular the increase in strategy with these guys is amazing! Plus honestly, seeing Biscuit's "true form" was a bit of a shock - but in the best way possible.

There's some definite hints at future rivalries, especially as the exorcist is heading off with Hisoka to go an assist with the small matter of the Spiders and their MIA leader, so I'm not sure what's going to happen next as far as that goes - nor when we'll next see Hisoka or one of the Spiders.

In the meantime, it seems we have a giant ant to worry about (...which doesn't sound that bad when you write it down, but I'm sure it's going to be! XD)

An incredible conclusion. Gon really shines these last few volumes. I'll be sad to say goodbye to Greed Island, but now we get into Chimera Ant. An arc I've been told my the internet is one of the best in shonen history. Naturally, I'm very excited.

This was a good volume that brought a very shocking end to the Greet Island Arc that made me more concerned about Gon and his frightening character. Yet it set up for the most heavy arc, which I know that I am looking forward to.

Once again admiring Gon's dedication.

Also, I was totally in awe of Biscuit's true form :D (It's sad to see her go)

BOSS BATTLE! For a Shounen manga, there haven't been too many one-on-one fights with our heroes vs Big Bads. Kurapika in the Yorknew City arc was probably the only one so far. Gon finally gets in on the action and... oof. This was a dense volume:

- It's mentioned by someone after the battle, but it's apparent Gon stands very little chance against Bomber, but only if you're basing them off power and experience. Bomber is pretty legit for an underdeveloped villain - he quickly identifies Gon's strategy and counters with his own, taking full control of the battle. He also catches on that Gon will not go down physically - his spirit must be broken. However, as Bomber will soon realize, this is not a battle of strength at all.

- Meanwhile, Bisky reveals her "monster" form to crony No. 1, while Killua reveals his cool new weapon against crony No. 2.

- Back to the boss battle: In flashbacks, you see how comprehensive Gon's training truly was, which is why this chess match is so entertaining. But Gon, ever the masochist, decides to put his pride before his own preservation and gets in a couple decent hits at the expense of getting his arm blown the !#$& off. Then everything just goes bonkers. The heroes' full plan comes into fruition and you can enjoy the carnage that follows. But seeing a child with an arm blown off fight a grown man with bombs for hands is not the most settling of images.

- Despite all that just happened, everything is resolved with overwhelming heart and kindness. And, as I've mentioned before, Goreinu is a stand-up dude. Respect.

- As the entire arc has teased, the exorcist is off to free the chains on Chrollo. The heartthrob will be back... someday!

- Hey, look, someone finally beat Greed Island! You learn some history about the game and how Gon's dad is a prick of the first order. In trying to get to Ging, Gon and Killua are instead sent to Kite, Ging's student who we met all the way back in the first issue. After playing some real-life Pokemon Snap, our heroes stumble upon an emerging new threat: Chimera Ants.

Enjoy the reprieve, because we're about to embark on some truly dark territory.

Hmm, there's a misprint in my copy. Ging's anagram is supposed to be "NIGG," but it appears as "NGIG." Something weird must be going on at VIZ. Actually, now that I think about it, all my Dragon Ball volumes seem to accidentally remove Mr. Popo's lips. Weird....

Anyway, regretting taking so long to re-read Greed Island, as I feel I haven't given myself great opportunity to reappraise the arc. The first time I read this, I didn't love how a lot of the card-collecting didn't matter too much in favor of Nen training. And this was probably the nadir of Togashi's art, unfortunately. Re-reading, I think I do appreciate it more, as was true for Yorknew as well, but I put too much time between the bulk of the arc and its last two volumes. I guess another thing was I didn't feel Genthru looked cool enough to be a major antagonist, but I can respect him more now.

We also see more of the extremes of Gon's nekketsu, which continues to push toward the Neferpitou battle. And we've started the Chimera Ant Arc, so we're in for good eatin' for the next twenty volumes! That is, when I first read the manga I didn't actually "love" it until the Queen first showed up near the end of this volume. Just such an unconventional design for a major enemy in shōnen battle manga (even if no one ends up actually fighting here, which I didn't know at the time). Honestly, a lot of the Chimera Ants look kinda goofy, but that's not a big deal in this volume yet, so fuck it.

With the end of the Greed Island arc, we move onto (in my opinion) the best arc created by Yoshihiro Togashi, the Chimera Ant arc.
Gensuru's fight with Gon seemed slightly less action-packed than in the anime, but I still enjoyed it. I mean, we get to see how truthfully reckless Gon is as he is willing to sacrifice his own arm just to get a hit on the enemy. Hisoka has done similar things previously, in fact he sacrificed both his arms just to put on a show, but seeing Gon do it certainly seems different.
On another note, I'm so excited for this new arc. Ever since I first read/watched it, it has held a special place in my heart. After all, no story ever has made me as emotional as this one has. I'm glad we get to see Gon and Killua's potential as well as see them from Kaito's point of view, for he certainly has known Gon for a long time and can see just how quickly and greatly he is improving and growing.

Why is Kurapika on the cover if he isn’t in the book?

The transition into the chimera ant arc felt a little more abrupt than it did in the anime. Gon knowing who Kite is previously adds in a a different experience.

That being said, I’m ready for the arc 😏

Greed Island's a fun arc! There's the satisfaction of seeing how far Killua has come (acing his Hunter Exam), while realizing how far Gon/Killua *still* have to go, leading to one of the most fun/engaging training sequences I've read in a manga. The logic of the Nen system grows in a cool way, and you can see the influence from Fighting Games, martial arts, etc. I think the Card System is really creative - I wonder if you could make a Tabletop Game based on it - as is the way that MMORPG social dynamics are represented in the various players of Greed Island. It's fun to imagine ways of transposing ideas from Greed Island into actual games (even though the game as is described is basically some sort of social game: the action aspects are not very rigorously defined, which one would expect). Many of the cards could be their own games entirely, I think - sometimes defining interesting social situation or transformations (I quite like the card that turns you into a ghost for 24 hours - or permanently, if you fail to return to where you became a ghost, or something...)

The bubble horse chapter came out right around Ikaruga's release date (Dec 2001), so it was cool to see Togashi taking inspiration from contemporaneous games.

The Spiders - my grievances aside - have a fun 'cameo' and it's funny to see even them have various troubles. If we forget about the whole War Crimes part they're almost lovable at times.

Hisoka got unexpected development here. Although his portrayal of, to put it bluntly, a flamboyant pedophile bisexual serial killer, is uncomfortable - ignoring that, his depictions here show a character who could have a lot of potential in a coaching position, helping Gon and Killua grow. Of course, I have doubts that's the direction it'll go in, but whatever, it's shounen manga!!

Biscuit's character was fun, she's a great coach/sensei type character. I liked the themes of how Gon wants to play the game in the way he thinks his Dad intended - to train him and have fun - rather than sort of an 'overoptimized' way of figuring out the game without enjoying its places and people.

I did think some of the card-trading logic was kind of obtuse and confusing. As was some of the rules in the dodgeball fights. But overall the premise of Greed Island is so cool, so... shounen manga 5/5...

Gon and team beat the Genturu team by fighting one on one. Gon even loses his hand in the fight which felt similar to Hisoka's fight with Kastro. But he doesn't lose hope because he had the healer's card. He understands Genturu's trick of bombing 💣 without harming his 👐 hands. He finds the counter trick to it and wins the match. With the healer cards, they heal all of them. Gon gets all the cards as his other alliance members decide to do so causing him to win the game. Post the winning, there is a knowledge quiz to pass to get the card number 000. Gon wins it and then there are some who try to beat them for all cards but Gon and Killua defeat them instead. Gon gets to bring 3 cards out of the game as a prize out of which Blue planet is taken by Biscuit. They use the cards in hopes to meet Ging as his name comes up in a different manner on Gon's binder but they meet Kite instead. The Greed Island 🏝 Arc is over and a new one starts for Chimera Ants 🐜.
They are not simple Ants but are dangerous. They feed on animals or humans alike. How do Gon and Killua face this and how will they find Ging is to be seen.

Finalmente, terminamos Greed Island.

to each their own, but why would a 57 year old, powerful, skilled female fighter be so conscious about the way she looks that she would prefer to hide her muscles, the fruit of her labor, and her height, a not super tall 5'9"? her willing infantilization is annoying. she's holding herself back for her vanity? girl, please.

why would this bomber man, having killed so many people in this game, care suddenly enough to warn Gon about the actual risk of his attack? that whole villain diatribe? filler.

more than anything, when do egg laying flying insects birth kings? I suppose this queen is an insectOID creature rather? maybe that'll be the bulk of the next story arc, their inception? or creation maybe? but also, love that we're jumping right into the next arc.

okay, explanations! in this volume too? <3333

okay, that's the end of my mid-read thought stream.

Definitely the most exhilarating, touching and darkest volume yet! Our wild Greed Island adventure ends on a high note with a fierce boss fight, Gon is a smartass and reunites with a dear old friend, new characters are introduced and we are punched in the heart with the horrifying lengths our newest (and creepiest) adversary will go to quench their bloodlust. I think the manga handles this transition one hundred times better than the anime.

PS! I was ready to call the author out on their poor anatomy knowledge, referring to an ant's forearm and claws as tibia and tarsus when this obviously refers to a creature's hind legs ... but then I did some quick research on insect anatomy, and I stand corrected! Who knew HxH would be teaching me this kinda cool stuff!?
(Unless human anatomy applies to anthropomorphic insects?)

We have made it to the end of the Greed Island arc with an action packed last volume here. Basically, it's Gon, Killua and Biscuit just being awesome (and Biscuit in her amazing true form). The Bomber has been beaten and Gon wins the game and gets the ending Ging wanted for him. He takes three cards out of the game, one of them being accompany, and tries to locate Ging with it...only to be thwarted again! Instead of Ging, we get one of my the best characters, Kite. With that, we are led into my favorite arc of the entire series, The Chimera Ant Arc, and I can't wait for it to start. Wonderful volume.

So, this is the official end of the Greed Island arc. I forgot how it ended and the way that Gon, Killua, and Biscuit fought against the Bomber and his crew. I also forgot that Ging purposefully made it to where if Gon used the "Accompany" card, he would be sent to Kite, instead of him. (COWARDLY LOSER)

Anyways, now we are entering the Chimera Ant arc, which I'll be honest, I've been dreading, not because it's bad but because it's so long and hard to get through at times. Even the first two chapters were quite sad. Despite that, I'm looking forward to getting through the arc and seeing the future arcs after it.
