Chelsea M. Cameron is a New York Times/USA Today/Internationally Best Selling author from Maine who now lives and works in Boston. She's a red velvet cake enthusiast, obsessive tea drinker, former cheerleader, and world's worst video gamer. When not writing, she enjoys watching infomercials, eating brunch in bed, tweeting, and playing fetch with her cat, Sassenach. She has a degree in journalism from the University of Maine, Orono that she promptly abandoned to write about the people in her own head. More often than not, these people turn out to be just as weird as she is.
Three books into the series, and I still love it. This story was written with a good, steady pace throughout. The author knew what was needed to make her readers love every moment of this book. In this book, the point of view changes between three characters this time. It continues to switch from Ava’s to Peter’s, but now includes the POV of a new character, Brook. I must say, I grew attached to her and her story. I couldn’t wait to read what happens to her.
A brief recap on the previous plot and character connections. Di is Peter's 'mother', as she was the one who turned him into a vampire (noctail). Anyone else she's bitten, such as Victor, are Peter's 'brothers'. Peter made a promise to Di that he would never love anyone more then Di herself. If he does, then he will burst into dust, thus ending his immortal life.
The plot line focuses on Ava and her connections trying to find a way to break the promise, which would freely let Peter love her. Adding to this already tense situation is Victor promising Di that he would kill Ava within a year. Ava's mother is getting worse, which adds to her stress. They call on the help of friends from India to try and stop Di. With the help, Ava and Peter relax more, and Peter starts trying to be closer with Ava, but not going to far to risk dying. During all of this you meet Brook, a new character that has connections to Ivan, the noctail that died in book Two. You find out she is also a noctail, and that she is after Ava. This changes when she meets Jamie, a friend of Ava's. Jamie's kind to her, and despite killing kind people in the past, Brook finds herself unable to kill him. If anything, she feels a draw to him and his blood.
Ava's stressed out and starting to get desperate in this book. Between the issues with Peter and her mom, she's beginning to wish that she can just escape everything. Even the seeming mundane stress of going to school is starting to get to be too much for her. Peter is her rock, and without him she might crumble to pieces. Even if he can’t say those three words she wishes she could hear from him, she still can see that he cares a lot for her. She even ended up asking Peter turn her into a noctail whenever she wanted, and he agreed with her right away. Somehow, I see this coming to bite him in the ass later on... (Now THAT would be an interesting way to become a vampire!) However, being the gentleman he is, he just wants to make her happy and if that’s one way of doing so he will.
Peter surprised me in this book, showing much more emotion then in the past. It comes with noctails not having much emotions. It shows how much Ava has affected him into have feelings of any kind. He cares a lot for Ava, and would do anything for her. He just wants her to stop hurting, so even if he can’t fully love her he tries his best to show her through actions and few words.
Tex is still Ava’s friend and still doesn’t know how to stop talking. Sometimes she’s insensitive. Oh, and she's now been claimed by Victor. She heard all the warnings that Ava gave, but still decided to ignore her. Now Victor has her for life, and she has to learn to control the disadvantages that comes from being claimed by a noctail. Victor is better at imitating and perfecting his emotions, while Peter had to be taught how to laugh by Ava. Probably because Victor is much more closer to his human side then Peter is. This allows him to be able to flirt like a normal guy with women. He cares a lot for Tex, and you can see that by how they react to each other.
Brook wasn’t like any other character before. She’s different, and that’s probably why I grew attached to reading her story more then the main story. She’s human at first, but isn’t one for long. It does surprise me how she ends up in Ava’s home town and who she becomes friends with. She knows noctails don’t have emotion, but she feels strongly for Jamie, a human she met at the side of a road. She soon starts spending more time with him, eventually telling him the truth about who and what she is. Meeting Brook first surprises Jamie, but it doesn’t take long for him to fall for her. He’s afraid of her and loves her at the same time. Even when Brook attacks him, he knows it was a mistake and doesn’t blame her. He’s a good guy and Brook sees this, leading to her sparing his life.

First Thoughts: 4 stars I love this creepy and haunting story. Great installment. . Plot, Pacing and Style: Ava-Claire has so much on her plate I almost felt overwhelmed. Her mother’s cancer is terminal, the love of her life, Peter, can’t love Ava or it might end him, and her own immortality is on the line. This story continues with the search for finding a way out of the binds so Peter can be free, and at the same time try to cope with her mother dying.
The pacing was a little slow, even though I read the book quickly. It seemed like it took a very long time for the plot to take any steps forward. However, the slow pace also allowed me to jump back into the story since I had read book 2 a while back and I was able to catch up without feeling confused. The story was told in alternating POVs: Ava, Peter, and Brooke. . The MCs: I adored Peter and Ava, and I adored their relationship. Both of them are totally loyal and selfless. I think Peter’s strength was amazing, even his thoughts were so controlled. I would love to see him lose it, because I bet it would be HOT. ;) Ava wasn’t as strong as Peter, but he gave her the strength to become the person she wanted to be.
I should also mention some of the secondary characters here. I cannot stand Tex as she is just pure annoying and phony. Honestly, she had no added value to the story. I don’t even think Ava likes her. There must be a reason though, that she is kept in the storyline so I will be patient and see what happens with her. Jamie and Brooke were a storyline I wasn’t expecting, and I loved both of them and their blossoming romance. I really hope we get to see more of them in the 4th book. . Romance /Chemistry: Killing me!!! I know, I know. It had to go that way, but RAWR. Holy UST. I’m ready to dive into the next book now, it’s gonna be good!!! . Title/Cover: I love both. The title is perfect as neither choice is good. The cover is gorgeous; dark, soft, romantic, and full of feeling without even kissing. It really captures Ava and Peter so well. . Ending: Hold me. It was so emotional, so sad….even though I knew it was coming. But then there was lightness and hope, and I loved that part of it. “It’s always darkest before the dawn”. . Gripes/suggestions: I wish it had been a little faster paced and Tex grated on me. But really, this is all nit-picky stuff…I loved it. . Final Thoughts/Rec It? Yes yes yes. I love dark and creepy stories, and this is a great one.

I really enjoyed the premise of books one and two. and the story goes forward in book three with the introduction of a new character, Brooke. Ivan had changed her. This confused me as I thought he had already died or dissolved himself in book two. I believe Brooke's transition was a back story, but it was confusing. Supposedly, Ivan had sent her to seek Ava and keep an eye on her for him. But when Ivan departed from Brooke and didn't return, Brooke became interested in another individual, Ava's friend Jamie. And she didn't really know why she was to find Ava. Other new characters were introduced as well, Helena and her parents from India. I really didn't understand the introduction of Helena's parents as they were an insignificant addition to the characters and had only a minor role in the book.
Again, the main characters were well developed and strong. But of the three books thus far, this was the weakest of the lot. There was a lot of repetition of how Ava and Peter cared for each other, which we already knew from the previous books. And no spoiler here, the terminally ill, Claire(mom), did die in this addition. That I thought was very well written and executed. Jamie and Brooke's encounters were interesting as was Helena's story.
I am so ready to read the last book in the series, NeverEnd, which should be out in Spring 2013!! I have many questions I want answered. Will Ava really be turned immortal? What will happen with Texas and Vicktor? What about Jamie...how will his story end or has it already? How about Vicktor's bind? Well I look forward to spring 2013---unless the world ends on 12-21-12; I say that tongue in cheek.
Mmmm....a definite improvement over the 2nd book.... While Ava was still kind of annoying and...imbalanced emotionally? It's just that she would fly off the handle sometimes out of nowhere. I find it hard to follow and believe sometimes. However, Tex finally had some redeeming moments, which was a relief. I enjoyed her much more in this book, and even her relationship with Viktor....they worked well together in a strange way. I was so glad to have more Jamie moments too....curious to see where that goes. Helena was a delight, and finally added some depth to the past and the Di story... Ivan's explanation was satisfying, though I still don't get what *exactly* attracts them all to Ava. It was nice to see her having more moments with her family, and come back to that story. And by nice I also mean heartbreaking and cry-inducing. It was so hard to watch her deal with her mother's deterioration and it brought back so many memories for me. I think Ms. Cameron tackled that issue just brilliantly, and with realism and humility.
Peter, as ever, remains the highlight for me, and for some bizarre reason he keeps getting better and better. Oh my yes...
The ending though...I still don't seem to like the way Ms. Cameron has been ending each book in this series....it just doesn't flow well and comes kind of abruptly. And this one, while I know she'll explain it in the last book, I just didn't like the way it all happened. I'm still excited to read the conclusion though...of course now I have to wait. I'm a very bad waiter....
This book was another great addition to Chelsea's Noctalis series. I was a little skeptical at first when they switched scenes to Brooke's point of view, but quickly realized it was necessary. She blended into the story seamlessly. I love Peter and Victor. They are trying to be human even though they are not. It is fun to read. Tex and Jamie are also great characters. I wasn't real fond of the cancer and the immanent death of Ava's mom, though I understand it. The story was fast paced and left me wanting more. I can't wait until next year for the conclusion, Neverending. This is a great YA paranormal romance series.
there's so much that happens but it's not like other bits where it doesn't really go into details about it or leaves bits out which I really like about these books ...
tears for ava's mum :'( .. seriously it was like I was there apart of the family and I couldn't stop the tears...
I do really like that it's from others POV that helps alot ...
Omg!! So great and so emotional. Loved every word in it!! I really like how all the point of views of the different characters all flow together effortlessly. I love being able to see the different points of view and get everyones different emotions on the same events. Love Peter's devotion to Ava. Absolutely wonderful read. Cant wait for the next one!!!!
I have to admit the introducing of new characters is really not my thing but i guess it works the guy in the group needed love to. I'm not sure where we can go from here everything that you were dying to see not happen or happen did. It was a great read and i cant wait to see what happens next. although im not sure where the book can go from here. BTW I love Texas.
Agh. Fan girl moment. I cannot wait until the last book! Please hurry!
Ok I am better. So this book introduced a new character and I really did not like Brooke but I liked the insight she provided about Ivan! I kind of missed him! The ending was sad and I cried!
This was my least favorite book so far. It was really drug out with an ending I knew was coming. There was some important parts to the story line but really they could have been condensed down to a paragraph so that this book could have been skipped all together.
AT FIRST WAS A LITTLE HARD TO FOLLOW THAN REALLY GOT DRAWN BACK, STARTED TO FEEL A LITTLE DRAWN OUT AND BY THE END HATED KNWOING HAD TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK
Chelsea Cameron has a wonderful way with words. Her characters are vivid and the story is touching. I cannot wait to read the conclusion to this wonderful story.
