Nope. Can't do. I thought that maybe after the "brain-rape" the hero will somehow redeem himself, but instead when confronted by the heroine, he just laughs it off. And if that isn't enough, he forcibly removes her clothes. I feel violated and I'm only reading this.

Disclaimer: I tried. I really tried to be unbiased about this book, despite the negative reviews I've seen on all sides. I'm sure it effected me anyway, no matter open-minded I tried to be.

I did like one thing: that cover is pretty cool.

Dante Raintree is the Dranir of the Raintree clan, a magically group of people at war with the Ansara, their rivals. Dante owns a casino called Inferno (which I thought was clever, but I'm a geek like that). And he thinks he has a problem with a woman stealing from him to the tune of $5K a week or so.

What he really has is an untrained magic user named Lorna Clay who doesn't know exactly why she's so good with numbers. She just knows that it works for her.

When the two of them meet for the first time, sparks fly, literally. Dante's Inferno (see? Clever, har har) nearly burns down and he uses Lorna's untapped power to help them survive the blaze. It's not the last time they'll be in danger for their lives and certainly not the last time he uses her.

Okay, now the opinion part:

Overall, I don't think it's a terrible story. It's a setup book for the two that follow, clearly. There are lots of rules that Linda Howard tries to establish for the Raintree world, and I think she handles that pretty well. I actually *liked* Lorna for the majority of the book.

I despised Dante. Despised him. He has not one redeeming quality that I could find. I think what makes him particularly unpleasant is not the fact that he mentally controls Lorna, but that he admits to himself that it's wrong, that she'll hate him and he shouldn't do it, and yet he does it anyway. Multiple times.

Or maybe it's the fact that he's amused by how pissed off she gets when he's, to borrow her term, mind-raped her.

I know that Ms. Howard is known for her alpha heroes. I have read alpha heroes that I can occasionally handle. This is the second of her books that I've read (Dream Man was the other) and the heroes in both completely turned me off.

Did I mention I despised him?

As a result, I do not buy the romance and ending agreement between him and Lorna at all. I found it far too contrived and easy. I found it insulting that, after all this abuse, Lorna suddenly lost her backbone and spunk and became Dante's Woman.

If Dante had been at least a marginally decent person, if the 'fall in love' had not felt so forced and tacked on to the end of the story, I might have adjusted my opinion upward. As it is, I skimmed the book rather than reading every single word more than once, like I usually do.

So very much not for me.

Linda Howard returns to category with this the first installment to the Raintree Trilogy written by herself, Linda Winstead Jones, & Beverly Barton.

I actually kinda liked this one. At least I liked it better than some of her latest books. Published by Silhouette Nocturne, it's all paranormal and that combined with the fact LH is one of my all time favorite comfort reads, made this book far more likable for me than if it had been written by another author.

I really liked Dante the hero's paranormal gift as well as the world they've placed him in. Sure he was a tad overbearing in his alpha maleness, (he basically forced Lorna, the heroine, to do exactly what he wanted for a good portion of this book), but she was feisty enough to deal with him. Besides she has some powers of her own and as soon as she learns how to control them, he won't be steam rolling anymore.

The big drawback for me, was the fact that this one was basically a teaser for the next two installments. (Their story is left hanging at the end of the book!)

These two are pretty hot together and I look forward to reading more about them!

*spoiler free review*

I first read this book in French years ago.
This trilogy is written by 3 different authors, a thing I usually don't like. But as there is only three books and one of the authors is Linda Howard, one of my favorite author, I gave it a go.

I really enjoyed Dante and Lorna. Dante is our typical Linda Howard hero: Alpha super hottie with jerkish tendencies. Lorna is no push over so they are a good match.

Although their relationship is hot and fast paced some parts of the book were dragging with too many repeats.

Warning: the story ends up quite abruptly but is picked up at the end of the third book.

I always love Linda Howard's writing style because it's easy to read and definitely entertaining. This was one of her books that hooked me from the beginning. But cliffhanger!!! I had never thought there was a cliffhanger at the end!

We have Dante Raintree, young scion of a family of gifted individuals. He owns and operates a casino, and he's become angry that lovely Lorna Clay keeps winning at his casino. He's convinced she's cheating, but he has no proof. In an effort to find out what's going on, Dante has his head of security bring Lorna to his office.

Lorna has always been good with numbers, and she uses the talent sparingly. She wins just enough to keep herself solvent, then moves on to another casino. Once in Dante Raintree's office, she is terrified at the currents of dangerous energy she can feel. The terror becomes all too real when the casino catches on fire, and Lorna must descend from the 19th floor with an angry man who won't let her out of his sight.

Things utterly fell to hell at this point.

Dante refuses to allow Lorna to escape with the others. As he directs everyone else to safety, he muscles her into the heart of the casino, and the fire, with him. Since fire is an element that Dante can control, he intends to quell the flames, then resume his interrogation of Lorna. The fire, however, refuses to bend to his will, and Dante ends up tapping Lorna's own, innate pool of power for the energy he needs. It's an act that leaves her in blinding pain and confusion.

Once they escape the building, Dante uses mind control (I shit you not) to command Lorna not to leave. She slowly regains her wits, and when she discovers what he's done, she is furious. Dante speaks to the police and firefighters, then hauls Lorna into his car and takes her to his home, where he continues to control her like a marionette. Convinced she may be one of the Ansara (another group of talented people, who are at war with the Raintree group), Dante orders Lorna to strip. When she refuses, he literally tears her clothing off, in search of a birthmark that will indicate she's Ansara. Of course, he doesn't find one. Lorna is left terrified, furious, and sobbing.

Dante leaves her alone for the rest of the night, but he won't let her leave.

The following day, he leaves the house, but orders her (still using mind control, here) to stay at his house. Once alone in the house, it apparently never occurred to Lorna to GET ON A GODDAMNED PHONE AND CALL THE POLICE. The author alluded to her having no love for the police, but to that extent? Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but if I was essentially being held hostage in someone's house, but still had free rein of said house, I would trash the shit out of it! There wouldn't be one piece of glass left unbroken. What did Lorna do? She switched his sugar and salt, and poured salt on his bed.

That night, when Lorna has gone to bed, Dante comes in and gets in bed with her, since his bed had salt in it. Um, are there not several other guest rooms? Yes, but sleeping with her was a power play. Did she attempt to leave? No, because she trusted him not to try anything. OMG, CAN YOU SAY STOCKHOLM SYNDROME?!

48 hours into this hot mess, she is wanting to have sex with him, and he wants her to have his babies. I am surprised I refrained from throwing this book against a wall. When they are on the verge of bumping uglies, then and only then does Lorna insist that Dante stop with the mind control. He wants the nookie enough to agree, but he's all surly about it. Like, wtf? Do you want a partner, or a puppet?

Going back to the beginning, because I can't let it go, Dante was pissed that this woman was winning about 5k here and there from him. He makes millions, and he begrudges her a few thousand?! Yet, this was his sole reason for dragging her INTO the fire; because he had yet to figure out how she was cheating him. Was it worth almost getting her killed?

Finally, to add insult to injury, the stupid effing book ended on a cliffhanger!

I don't think I have the words to describe my loathing for this book. Classic abusive relationship, coupled with an insipid female lead with a clear-cut case of Stockholm Syndrome, twu wuv in two days, and I am wanting to gag all over again just thinking about it. There was nothing redeeming about this shit-show of a book.

One star, given with the utmost reluctance.

sebenarnya udah bisa diduga saya ga cocok baca contemporary romance + paranormal romance - pertama, karena romance kontemporer kebanyakan seperti mary sue, ceritanya cukup sekian dan terima kasih, do all women only read harlequin for the sex?

balik lagi baca historical romance aja aahh O_o

First of a trilogy each written by a different romance writer. Each story centers around one of the members of the Raintree royal family. The Raintree clan is a group of people with supernatural powers (which are strongest in the royals). In this book, the eldest Raintree royal - Dante, who has power over fire, owns a Reno Casino and has just caught someone he thinks is stealing. Lorna Clay is this person - and she may have her own psychic powers, but she is strangely unable to fully acknowledge them. When they meet there is an immediate reaction from both on the psychic plane, but before they can get to the bottom of what it means or Lorna's ability is, the casino is set on fire. This is one of a few assassination attempts and Dante spends a lot of time in the book from that point on overriding Lorna's protests. He makes her stay by his side and do what he wants - literally. He finds that she is untrained and cannot block him from commanding her to do as he says. The story flowed at a fast pace, the Raintree vs Ansara (ancient enemies bent on Raintree destruction) storyline and characters were interesting, but I felt like many things could have been explored with more depth and I had trouble believing in the romance between the two main characters. The biggest difficulty I had was how Dante's treatment of Lorna was handled. Didn't really gel with me, but there is promise, and I'm interested in how the story will continue in the next 2 books.

I was so desperate to read fresh LH material that I actually purchased this trilogy!! Overall I was pleasantly surprised by it, only book that let me down was the third one: Sanctuary. I liked Inferno but it just felt incomplete and didn't delve enough into the main characters...I'm used to LH really fleshing out her characters I guess. I liked Dante and Lorna, loved their conversational exchanges and how they got into each other..I didn't think Dante was as controlling lead me to believe, after all he is the Dranir, he has to be somewhat alpha, no?

Raintree: Inferno is the first in the Raintree series by 3 different authors. I purchased this book as a 3 in 1 novel and was glad I did, as the ending was a cliff-hanger and I was eager to read more. I was surprised at first to learn that these trilogies were written by different authors and was a little put off by that. However, now having read all three, I can understand how each author created their own character but also stayed true to the plot.

The modern Raintree people are descendants of wizards and possess magical abilities. According to legend, their arch-rivals are another clan of dark wizards called the Ansara. The Raintree and Ansara went to war over 200 years ago. The Raintree clan almost annihilated the Ansara people and left what remained of their desecrated clan in the middle of a deserted Caribbean island. Now, the Ansara clan have rebuilt their numbers and are seeking revenge on the Raintree descendants.
This book begins with Dante Raintree, the Dranir (leader) of the Raintree clan who possesses the power to control fire. Dante owns a casino called Inferno, and when he discovers a women stealing from him, he confronts her and discovers a lot more than a simple theft. Lorna Clay is an untrained magic user and unwittingly becomes a part of the Raintree/Ansara war.

I had reservations about these books but ended up really liking them. Dante seemed a somewhat arrogant and overbearing male lead but possessed some redeeming characteristics in the end (kindness and understanding). Lora was a strong character who I was conflicted about at times. Lorna was held against her will by Dante who was quite callous towards her at the beginning. However, she seemed to forget all about that treatment pretty quickly and jump into bed with him. However, despite that, Lorna had some good one-liners and the background and time the author took to explore the Raintree history and Lorna’s past really endeared me to this book.

As the first novel in a trilogy, I found Raintree: Inferno by Linda Howard to be a weak start. It was a short, quick read, but I find myself lacking things to say about it, which is a sign of its banality. The plot didn’t hold my interest, and I found the characters rather flat. The controlling nature of the main male character irked me to no end. The romantic aspect of the novel seemed forced and unrealistic to me, mainly because of the male character, as I could not see how the female character could fall for someone so irritating in such a short period of time. TOn a more positive note, the writing style wasn't terrible, and I didn't mind the paranormal aspect of the story.

I wouldn’t recommend this novel. I will, however, be reading the other two books in the trilogy because I own them, not because the plot holds any appeal for me.

What?! I cannot believe how this ended. That was totally not an ending. But it got the job done and really wanting the read the rest of this trilogy. A great book that kept me interested and turning pages. Great creativity, imagination, characters, personalities, suspense, a little action, steaminess, and a gripping if somewhat cut short ending. Great for anytime. Enjoy!

Well, that sucks. Here I am, trying to read down this mountain and at the same time attend to that stash of numbered romances I'd picked up for varying reasons and I pull out one that's so interesting that I feel the need to hunt down the other 3. This is the opposite direction of reading down; this is adding to. (mutter)

Oh, it had its issues...

Our H, powerful fire mage or whatever, runs a casino. A suspiciously successful player is spotted and dragged into his office. The h - gifted in ways she's not really sure about and trying to ignore - finds herself meeting him, getting tested by him, questioned by him, etc. A fire breaks out in the casino. He drags her with him, forcibly links her power to his to help put the fire out, and drags her home with him.

Or rather, compels her to go with him. He manages to forget things like the need to relieve oneself. She's understandably pissed off (and he was almost pissed on, but don't think he thought about that)

This takes half the book - issue one.

Somehow over the next couple of days, they manage to fall for each other (or perhaps it was insta-love, not sure). - issue two

And they figure out there is a bad guy and he starts heading for the home fort.

It ends in a cliff hanger - issue three

And I wanna know what happens next.

Three and a half stars.

Interesting start to a PNR trilogy about the Raintree siblings, a powerful family ruling one of the most gifted groups of practioners in the world.

Dante Raintree is the Dranir (the equivalent of king) and meets his match in Lorna Clay, a "stray" who never knew of the existence of others like herself before being intercepted at Dante's casino.

Inferno is not a bad story to kick off the series, but does not stand alone, which is not a selling point from my perspective.

On to the next book...

-1.5 STARS-
I like romance novels where the two main characters fall madly, ridiculously, and completely in love. This book was hard for me to read because it never seemed like the two characters were falling in love and I really didn't like either characters very much. The female lead was very annoying and the male lead was too overpowering and almost rapey. The only reason I gave it more than 1 star was because it has an interesting concept with the two witchy clans and I love paranormal romance.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, save yourself some time and don't read this one.

This paranormal romance features two enemy clans -the Raintree and the Ansara. When his casino goes up in flames, Dante Raintree suspects Lorna Clay who he is interrogating for cheating in the casino. But as he brutally uses her power to control the fire, he feels responsible for her and realizes her innocence. It takes some smoothing over and persuasion to convince her of her own gifts and for their attraction to settle between them. At the end of the novel, Dante realizes that his clan is once again under attack by the Ansara, leaving us ready for the next novel in this trilogy.

SPOILER ALERT I am a long-time Linda Howard fan, but this is the first time I have read one of her earlier paranormal books. And this was a great read. The story was well-written, the characters were great with some laugh-out-loud moments and an unusual twist or two. Even Dante's compulsions regarding Lorna didn't bother me since he was protecting her, sometimes from herself. I loved their story and was really disappointed when it suddenly ended on a totally unexpected cliffhanger which was a big turn-off for me.
Discovered it is a four book series and reluctantly bought the other three.

This is not a novel.

This is not a novel; it’s just Act 1. Don’t bother to get interested in the characters or you’ll have to buy another book to see what happens to them. I prefer to read a complete story. Sure, establish your characters and use them again, but come up with another narrative. And speaking of characters, I found the protagonist Lorna to be tiresome and annoying.

(Audible.)Enjoyed another Linda Howard book. People with gifts live among regular people. There are 2 separate gifted groups. Basically one set with an agenda to help mankind and the other looking to benefit however they are able. A woman is suspected of cheating in Dante's casino. She is unaware of how she can win every time. She just knows she can. Dante' holds her looking for answers however events unravel quickly as he tries to keep her and his people safe.
