Alyce harbors a secret passion for speed and automobiles, and she's spent many an afternoon driving around the rustic track in the field behind her home. When she discovers that her father's company has sponsored a racing car that will compete in several upcoming events--races in which the driver will be paid and could win as much as five thousand dollars in prize money--she conspires with her father's mechanic, Webster, to train and compete.

But when her friends cast aspersions on Webster's past, she realizes she may have trusted the wrong person with her secret. Will Alyce come up with the money in time, or will she have to choose between her hasty promise and the man who holds a piece of her heart?

PLEASE NOTE: I HAVE RETURNED TO MY GIVEN NAME FOR ALL WRITING AND SOCIAL MEDIA. TO SEE WHAT I'M READING THESE DAYS, PLEASE FRIEND/FOLLOW D'ANN MATEER. THANK YOU!

While I have been writing for what feels like my whole life, I began seriously studying the craft in 2000. Since then I have completed five novels, had several pieces published in local periodicals, attended six writing conferences and managed to final in ACFW's Genesis contest in 2006, 2008, and 2009. My first historical novel, Wings of a Dream, released in September 2011. My second, At Every Turn, is available now. But writing is only a piece of my life.

I am mostly just a woman trying to live her life in a manner pleasing to the Lord. That involves being a wife to Jeff and a mother to my three young adult children. Neither role has come easily, but both have stretched me, requiring me to press in closer to Jesus. And because of this, Jesus has taken an insecure, fearful, sometimes angry girl and is turning her into a more trusting, peaceful, grace-filled woman. At least some of the time. There is still such a long way to go!

Goodness, I forgot how much I love this book. Besides that one bit of content (toward in the sexual content section) towards the end, this book is such a fantastic one! Alyce is unlike the typical Christian Fiction main girl and it’s so refreshing! She has the plan to raise 3,000 dollars (that’s just under $70,000 today according to one inflation calculator) for missionaries in Africa and I just adored seeing her heart. The faith content was beyond lovely and I was thrilled to re-read this book.

This was a very refreshing read. From reading the description I almost expected one of those cliche books about a girl who breaks away from everything her parents want her to do, and then her parents end up seeing she was right. That was NOT what this book is.
The first thing I was struck by in this book was that the main character is passionate about the Lord. I haven't really read that many books where the characters are this on fire for the Lord. It made me want to be more like that myself.
Alyce is a very believable girl. She has big dreams, and she promises to make them come true. Some may say shes overenthusiastic, but I would always rather read about someone who tried to do to much, then someone who didn't try at all. She is a very trusting girl, which made her all the more lovable to me.
I really enjoyed how when Alyce is driving her car, she never turns it into a 'this is why girls are just as good as men' thing. She simply loves cars. She loves racing, and its a way to fulfill her promises.
I also really loved the consequences of Alyce's choices. Nothing really turned out as I thought it would, but in the best possible way.
This book put a whole new spin on the 'girl wants to drive a car' story plot. I honestly enjoyed every single page of the book. I wish more authors wrote like this.

This book was okay... I liked it, but not nearly as much as I have liked Anne Mateer's other books. The heroine just seriously annoyed me because she was so obviously making bad decisions. Was she naive? Or just stupid? Maybe that's a bit harsh, but she was simply unbelievably... gullible? I couldn't relate to her at all. And I have to say that the romance wasn't entirely convincing either.

I did, however, really like the spiritual aspects of the story as well as the racing and history info. Quite interesting! And the first person narration was well done too, I thought.

This was such an enjoyable read about trusting in the Lord and not placing your will and plans before His, and loving people for who they are.

I haven't read many books set in this time period, and I really enjoyed it! The automobile theme was pretty interesting. I'd have to say I liked this one even more than "A Home for My Heart", which I really enjoyed as well. (The two books are both in the same time period, but the setting, and social class are pretty much opposite those in Home for My Heart.)

The plot really kept me guessing! I was stressing right along with Alyce over her money situation- I had NO idea what she was going to do! I really enjoyed watching the heroine's faith grow throughout the story; I enjoyed her spunky, joyful personality, and he zeal for the Lord! Alyce's relationship with her Grandmother, and then her developed relationship with her mom, were both really sweet.

Webster was a sweet, but mysterious, hero. (When he was first introduced in the story I immediately thought of David Moscow - when he played David, from Disney's Newsies - and it was crazy how accurately he fit the author's description! At least for me.)
description

Lawrence Trotter. **Minor spoiler** As with most villains, I could tell from the very beginning something was wrong and I shouldn't like him. Oh how right that instinct was! >:{ He was so deceitful and heartless! He made me so mad (and also kind of frustrated with Alyce for not seeing through his facade of goodness from the beginning!)

I am really looking forward to reading Wings of a Dream, and any other works Anne Mateer writes in the future!

First I want to say this probably deserves a 3 1/2 - but that isn't an option.

My husband and I are big fans of NASCAR and having the history of the races talked about in a book was really interesting and unique. I don't think I've read a book with that as the backdrop before.

I thought the main character had good intentions, but there is a cliche about good intentions . . . I could understand her initial mistake, but it seemed that even though she was provided information talking about the character of Lawrence and of Webster, she ignored that (and her own instincts) in order to believe the opposite of both men.

I loved picturing her zooming down the roads and around the racetrack. I think her driving fit with everything else we learn about her character.

There are a couple "types" of Christian romance novels. One of them stresses the romance and another the spiritual aspects. This talked and dealt with her spiritual life in much greater depth and detail than her relationship with either man.

It was an entertaining book and I thank Bethany House for providing it. Their gift in no way influenced my review.

There were definitely some good and bad things about this book. The good things were that she had a very strong main female character and a very strong villain. One ting that I did not like about the main female character was that at times she seemed way too clueless. Things that even I would figured out on my own. One of the biggest things though was that there were was only one point of view, the main female character's view. There were definitely some parts where I would have loved to see one of the other character's view on something.

This tale includes a life battle that includes: faith, trust, the innocence of a young woman - pitted against blackmail, manipulation, and fear.

This young woman has admirable independence and tremendous faith in her God and her individual ability to serve him.

Some of the experiences were interesting, but some were not quite believable. It sheds light on many aspects of historical significance. However, overall the content kept my attention and was enjoyable.

There was very fortunate H.E.A. for this Nook reader.

Anne Mateer’s newest release, At Every Turn, is a whirlwind story of intrigue and love set against the background of the early stages of automobile racing in the United States.
Alyce Benson is a young woman whose heart is on fire for God. She also loves automobiles and speed. The author combines these two elements to create a fascinating story world peopled with compelling characters, exciting plot twists and surprises until the very end.
When African missionaries visit her church, Alyce is so moved by their story and their photos of African children, she pledges $3,000 to the missionaries and challenges the church to match her.
There’s only one problem: she doesn’t have the money.
Her wealthy father refuses to give it to her because he is not Christian. She tries to raise the money through selling some of her jewelry and offering a taxi service in her small town. No one wants to ride with her. The money she does raise, she quickly gives away to hurting and needy people in her town.
Alyce learns her father is building a race car and she persuades the mechanic, Webster, to let her drive it in the race. She combines her love of speed with a chance to earn the money she pledged. Things start out well. She doesn’t win but she is paid just for driving. She entrusts the money to Webster for safekeeping.
Things begin to turn when one of her father’s most trusted employees, Lawrence, begins to show interest in her and she learns that Webster has dark secrets in the past he won’t talk about.
Disasters strike on multiple levels when Alyce’s money is stolen (she thinks by Webster), Lawrence’s true colors are revealed and Webster is accused of attacking Alyce. As she learns more about Lawrence, her trust in Webster is renewed.
She drives in one more race with Webster. A horrible accident means the loss of any opportunity she has to raise the money in time and Webster is severely injured. She recognizes her feelings for Webster.
She faces public humiliation when she must admit to the church that she failed to fulfill her pledge.
I will avoid any spoiler alerts from here on. It is well worth getting the book to read how masterfully the author weaves all her plot threads into a highly satisfactory ending.
Anne Mateer’s story is well-researched. She brings the American Midwest of 1919 to life with accurate and detailed settings from small town to big city and the growth of the automobile and the changes it was making. Her descriptions of the racing are spot on. She captures the people and the mores of the time, making them real.
Alyce Benson is an intriguing character, enthusiastic for God and for racing. Her naiveté is soon tempered by the hardships and challenges she faces. Her story arc is that of a young woman coming to spiritual and emotional maturity.
Webster grows on the reader as his personality is revealed through other characters. His secret past, his self-sacrifice and future dreams make him a captivating character.
Minor characters are also wonderfully drawn, especially Alyce’s grandmother who is her spiritual rock and mentor. Alyce’s new-found friend, Lucinda, is vital in helping Alyce to grow and mature, to see people around her.
I give this novel five stars.

SUMMARY: Caught up in a whirlwind of religious fervor when two missionaries speak at her church, Alyce Benson impetuously pledges three thousand dollars to mission work in Africa. She's certain her wealthy father will simply hand her the money. But when he refuses, she must either stand up in front of the congregation and admit failure, or raise the money herself.

Alyce harbors a secret passion for speed and automobiles. It's 1916, and the latest advancements in car engines allow some to post speeds upwards of seventy miles per hour! When she discovers her father's company has sponsored a racing car that will compete in several upcoming events--races in which the driver will be paid and could win as much as five thousand dollars in prize money--she conspires with her father's mechanic, Webster, to secretly train and compete.

But as Alyce comes across needs in her own community, money slips through her fingers faster than she can earn it. And when her friends cast aspersions on Webster's past, she believes she might have trusted the wrong man with her secret. Will Alyce come up with the money in time, or will she have to choose between her promise and the man who holds a piece of her heart?

REVIEW: Overall this is a good read; but I found Alyce's impetuousness, deception, and lies a little much throughout the first two-thirds of this book. I loved her independent spirit and her love for new challenges but felt her outward show of faith and her actions were diametrically opposed. She almost began grating on my nerves with her "anything goes as long as I can get the money I promised" attitude. I have to say that she redeemed herself in the end when she realized she needed grace and the wisdom of God's direction rather than following her own will. I enjoyed the interplay with both Webster and Lawrence and Alyce's attempts to understand who was the good guy and who was the bad guy. Also felt the conclusion to her romance was a little rushed at the end. By the end of the book, it is obvious that Mateer's theme is following God's direction and will rather than pursuing our own no matter the cost. Alyce had the right desires but fulfilled them through her will not God's. Overall an easy and enjoyable read.

FAVORITE QUOTES:
"It isn't just people in faraway places tht need your compassion and help. Sometimes it's those right where you are."

"Esther. And Rahab. Jochebed, the mother of Moses, as well as the midwives that delivered those Hebrew babies. Even Jael. They all concealed something. Sometimes the Lord instructs His people to do a task that seems extraordinary. But always for a reason. Always for the good of His people as a whole.....But be very sure that it is the Lord's direction and not your own desire...Sometimes our motives get so tangled up it's hard to discern the difference."

"But right at this moment, the Lord has more important work for you.....The work of character. Of surrendering your pride to His loving hands. Allowing Him to mold and shape you in His way, not yours.

Passion for speed and a heart for missions combine in a turn-of-the-century comedy!

I love the message of At Every Turn. While I hope I am not as impulsive as Alyce, I know I have sought similar solutions to problems. Perhaps you will also find yourself relating to her misdirected focus.

Some situations seem to lend themselves to humorous complications, and Alyce is particularly adept at finding them! The story is not all comedy, however, as problems arise which are not funny at all.

I especially enjoyed Alyce’s grandmother and her love for Alyce. What a blessing to have a woman of faith speak wisdom into her life–especially when everything seems to go wrong at once.

At Every Turn is a fun story, yet it delivers (subtly) an important reminder to each of us of God’s provision. Definitely recommended!

In Anne Mateer's latest book, At Every Turn, the reader will find they are on a rapid race to see if Alyce can be many things -
---A woman driver in 1916 when cars were new and women drivers virtually non-existent.
---A woman driver in a competitive automobile race - when automobile racing was new and only males allowed.
---A Christian with missionary zeal to help the unfortunate children and peoples of Africa when she is confronted with photographs and stories of them.
---Compassion for people she meets who are in need from day to day.

Alyce is a daughter of wealth, but her wealthy father does not share her Christian beliefs and will not help in her desire to give $3,000 (Yes, a lot of money - especially in 1916) to the missionary from Africa. Since she has publicly pledged to give this amount, she is honor bound to produce it. But how?

Alyce's life is further complicated by deceiving folks about what she is doing even if what she is trying to accomplish is for a good cause. Also, she has trust in individuals where such trust should not be placed.

There is a sweet romance in the story with no overt involvement of the characters with one another.

A fast moving story of a young Christian lady who is not the typical lady of the times as she simply does not fit the genteel lady mold that constrains.

Anne Mateer has officially made it to my favorite author list!! At Every Turn is a beautiful example of what makes her so great. She has a smooth style of storytelling that can only be admired.

What I Loved: I enjoyed the quirky heroine, Alyce Benson. She was sweet, giving, and determined. She had such a heart for missionary work that it was so easy to stand along side of her and root for her the entire time.
The story is told through the first person so the reader is left to guess and determine the motives of those around her just as Alyce is doing.
The racing enthusiast will enjoy this story of a woman determined to race in man’s world. While NASCAR holds no interest for me, I was able to fully enjoy the novel. There was enough historical information on racing to wet the appetite of those that enjoy it, but not too much to bore those that don’t.
The spiritual message was well done and brings to life themes of forgiveness, serving Christ in the way that God created you to, benevolence, and how to be an effective witness.

Rating and Recommendations: I highly recommend At Every Turn for those that enjoy a solid Christian Historical Fiction and happily give it five stars.

At Every Turn was a fun and exciting read. This isn't a time in history that I usually read, but I really enjoyed it and hope to read more set in this era soon.

I loved reading how racing was so different back then and yet at the same time kind of the same. Today there are very few women who are professional racers and I loved reading about a woman, who is from one of the wealthiest families, secretly racing. The scenes with her driving were perhaps my favorite, they were described so well I could actually see her flying down the road in her gloves and goggles!

Some aspects were very predictable, but this didn't hinder my enjoyment of the story too much.

I found this book to be delightful and informative. If you are a fan of turn-of-the-century fiction you should enjoy the book - I know I did!

As with Mateer's debut novel, my biggest gripe with this story is the 1st POV. Once again, it is well done, but once again, I want more!!! I want to be inside Webster's head as he lets Alice drive his prized racing car. Otherwise, I loved this book and the energy with which captures such a unique time in American history. We need more 20th-Century historical fiction!

This book was just ok for me. I bumped it up because I did like the ending for the most part.
I just could not get into this book for some reason. I ended up skipping over pages as fast as I could to get to the good part or interesting parts. It becomes enjoyable to me right at the end.

I did enjoy the racing facts but couldn't always relate to the jovial comparisons.

I did not find anything to dislike about this story, except the smarmy villain. Alyce Benson is a spunky, not run-of-the-mill heroine with a heart for God and a need for speed, in the early 20th century, when women drivers were still a rarity.

I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

I thoroughly enjoyed all of Alyce Benson's escapes and how she tried to escape from the consequences she caused. Her heart was in the right place, even if she didn't think about unintended consequences.
It was also interesting learning about early car racing and building.
I believe this was the first book I've read by Anne Mateer, but it will not be the last.

Author, Anne Mateer!! Yay!!!

I was amazed at her spunk! Her unassumingness! I liked Alyce Benson right away!!
Surprisingly, Alyce thinks her father will hand over her offer of commitment money! He doesn't have the zeal and fortitude she has!! Goodness. She sets out to earn the money herself. After all, they need her!!

Join Alyce in her adventure as she pivots around coming up with more adventure than you could ever imagine possible for her. Is she harebrained, or does she really stand up to win her hasty promise?
She's off to the races!
I loved the excitement before ever opening the cover~~

She’s certain her wealthy father will simply hand her the money. But when he refuses, she must either stand up in front of the congregation and admit failure, or raise the money herself.

Alyce is spontaneous. She sees a need and fills it! She has contacts, after all, doesn't she? But... not this time! She is on her own. Alyce loves her little spunky automobile that matches her to a T! Her father ought to have known!!

Shouldn't have he? His little girl will figure it out! But... will he? I am getting ahead of myself. Listen to what Aylce is seeing and hearing ~*~ and the exuberant edge-of-the-seat feel!

My heartbeat quickened. Oh, to be called to be such a vital part of God's work! He wouldn't even have to send me to Africa, though the thought sent a shiver of excitement down my spine. No, I'd be content to work for Him here in Indiana. I glimpsed Mrs. Tillman closer to the front. Her face reflected the same rapture that pulsed through my veins.
"Thanks to a friend who secured some photographic equipment, you can see some of those who are part of our work in Africa." Mr. McConnell slipped several photographs from the pages of his Bible. He stepped to the front row and handed two to Pastor Swan and two to Mr. Tillman on the opposite end of the front pew. --At Every Turn, page 13

Oh! They have an Irish cook! Clarissa! How will he be able to refuse Aylce's request during a wonderful Monday morning Irish breakfast??

But, alas... he does. Malarkey, indeed!

A clue for you!
