Charming, funny, a good friend, a less than perfect boyfriend, Spencer Matthews is one of the most talked-about stars of Made in Chelsea. But what lies behind his sometimes controversial behaviour? In Confessions of a Chelsea Boy, his honest and revealing autobiography, Spencer opens up about life before the cameras, including growing up on the beautiful island of St Barths where his parents own the exclusive Eden Rock hotel. He also writes movingly about the devastating loss of his brother on Everest, and the close family ties that ground him. Spencer describes his antics at Eton, where the masters declared they'd never met a boy like him before (this was not entirely a compliment), and introduces us to his friends Proudlock, Jamie, Hugo and Caggie. He takes us from his first kiss to his many romantic adventures (and misadventures) and describes the four loves of his life so far and why things didn't work out. From St Barths to St Tropez, from London to New York, Spencer also gives us glimpses into his world as he gambles with Hollywood stars, runs away from an enraged Middle-Eastern despot, and narrowly avoids death in a powerboat crash. Sensational, entertaining, full of laughter, this is the real Spenny as you've never seen him before.
[1.5 stars] Whereas Binky and Ollie don't take themselves too seriously in their autobiographies, Spencer is far too full of himself and it shows (I suppose in this instance you truly can read a book by its cover). The book is lackluster and far too full of pointless name dropping, but if you're MiC fan, you're still likely to want to read it regardless.
It was nice to see a deeper side to 'Spenny'. However, this book is full of pretentious crap and small digs at the reader- We all know what a hostess it- we don't need a description.
Confessions of a Chelsea Boy is the autobiography of Made in Chelsea star, Spencer Matthews. As one of the most popular characters on the show, he is always at the centre of the drama, usually involving girls, and he is particularly known for cheating on his girlfriends. Whether or not you love or hate Spenny, watchers of MIC cannot deny that the show wouldn't be the same without him, and this book gives you a brief glimpse into his life up til now.
This book is written in chronological order and documents the key moments in Spencer's life from his birth until 2013. It documents what it was like moving from England to France to St Barths and then finally back to England with the creation of the famous Eden Rock hotel, owned by his father, on the Caribbean island, St Barthelemy, along the way. It includes anecdotes from his Eton days in terms of education and social life as well as his brief time at USC in America where he studied for a bachelor of arts degree in cinema and television. Of course, it includes lots of details about the parties he's thrown, the parties he's been invited to and the parties he's promoted, as well as how Made in Chelsea came into being. He talks about pretty much every relationship that he's ever been in right from his first kiss, to his relationship with Stephanie Pratt (yep, it's that up to date) including things about him and Funda, Louise and Lucy, fellow MIC stars. The one thing that I wish this book included more of, is his relationship with his MIC 'boys', Jamie, Proudlock and even Hugo. They are, of course, mentioned numerous times, but not as much as I would like.
One of the most common questions when it comes to reality TV shows, such as Made in Chelsea, is: is it real? Spencer's autobiography gives you a good look at what his life has been like both before and after the creation of Made in Chelsea and it allows you to understand his playboy character a lot better. According to Spencer, the action on the show is real, but I believe he once said in an interview that he 'plays to his dark side'. Having read Confessions of a Chelsea Boy, I feel that the Spencer on and off screen are pretty similar, but perhaps the MIC Spencer is slightly exaggerated. But what about those awkward silences, you ask? Well of course there are awkward silences, no one wants to air their dirty laundry out in public! At least not at first...
What's good about this book is that Spencer doesn't preach about what he has learnt in life, instead he tells you straight up what happened and how it affected him. He's had a hell of a lot of life experiences considering how young he is, a lot of them involving him making some not-so-clever decisions, but I admire that Spencer takes full credit for his own actions. The other good thing is that he doesn't try to glamorise his life. He doesn't really encourage the life that he leads, acknowledging that it's not for everyone and it's certainly not normal, but nor does he discourage it. Spencer's writing is really informal and it feels like you're just having a chat as he tells you his life story. Some details are really quite personal which makes you feel like you're getting a bit closer to the real Spencer Matthews as who he is behind the mask of reality television.
So, if you're a fan of Made in Chelsea and you want to know things like how Spencer met Caggie, Hugo, Jamie, Proudlock and the rest of the MIC cast as well as lots of amusing (well, some not so amusing), anecdotes about his youth and what made him the man he is today - then this is the book for you. I'd highly recommend this to fans of MIC and Spencer Matthews because this book is full of interesting and surprising things about his life that I never knew and that you can't find out by stalking him on the internet. He has actually led a far more interesting life that you would imagine and if you want a concise and fascinating insight into his life then this book is what you need. If you don't watch Made in Chelsea you'll probably have very little interest in this book, in which case, the first thing you need to do, is start watching MIC - because, trust me, it's good. The second the you need to do, is buy this book - because, trust me, it's good.
I don't watch Made In Chelsea though I have watched a handful of episodes. They were mostly from the first and second series and I just couldn't get into the show but may try and watch it again in the future. I was however more than aware of Spencer Matthews from the many stories written about him in magazines and on the Internet so I was interested in reading his book. It was a very enjoyable read.
He does come across quite well in the book and it is a very honest read. As annoying as it is to read about a kid travelling and living around the world and having access to pretty much whatever he wanted it was also fun to read the many stories he told about growing up. Especially his time at Eton, rather than being a posh studying nerd getting straight As Spencer preferred to sneak out and generally cause as much mischief as possible. The story involving a water balloon was a particular favourite of mine. I also had no idea what had happened to his brother Mike when he climbed Everest either so that chapter came as a shock to me.
I also loved reading about his time at St Barths. It sounds like an incredible place to visit never mind own and live there. Not to mention the countless celebrities he met whilst growing up. It also contains a story regarding Spencer being drugged by a mysterious man who had been eyeing him up at the bar and bundled into the back of a car. He also speaks about drugs and his experience with acid which whilst quite a serious thing was absolutely hilarious to picture. I also had no idea that he attended university in America for a while and was good friends with Brody Jenner and Spencer Pratt.
The MiC bits went mostly over my head as I don't know who all the characters are but he does speak quite openly and honestly about his relationships with the various females and his regret at cheating on them. Overall I enjoyed the book and felt that Spencer came across as a down to earth nice person rather than a spoilt rich kid as some from his background tend to do. A must read for fans of MiC but also for anyone who likes a good story. Spencer May only be young but he does have a story to tell and it was a highly enjoyable one to read.
I'm a big fan of reality TV. I know it is trashy, I know it is mindless, but I can't help it. I love watching Made in Chelsea as it is so far removed from my own life-people swanning off to Dubai at the drop of a hat, glamorous parties every night, huge drama as everyone is snogging everyone else...
Spencer Matthews is often painted as the bad boy in the show, a playboy with little or no regard for the women he eats up (literally and figuratively) and spits out. From Confessions of a Chelsea Boy it is obvious that he really is a bit of a womaniser, yet he speaks respectfully about previous partners and with great affection for some of his first loves.
The book also gives information about his upbringing, the tragic loss of his brother who died whilst climbing Everest and never returned home and his experiences with drugs. I loved reading the stories about his early meetings with Oliver Proudlock and Jamie Laing, his Made in Chelsea costars and of course his relationship with Caggie.
This is probably not a book for anyone except pretty diehard fans of Made in Chelsea, but it does give an insight into the life of one of our biggest reality stars.
As an aside, the photos of him growing up are amusing-he looks exactly as he does now but shorter and with longer hair!
The only thing I knew about Spencer Matthews was that he was a posh guy on Made in Chelsea who cheated on his girlfriends. This book was an interesting read. Some of the things he got up to definitely shocked me, considering the age he was when it happened. I couldn't believe he first watched porn and masturbated at the age of 8!!! It's just wrong!!! I also can't believe he first had sex of the age of 13 (after wanting it since he was 8) and lied about his age!! If that girl knew, I'm sure she would be appalled. I felt sorry for him when heading about his brother and it's obvious that he loves his family. He just seems to live this life of drinking and clubbing and sleeping with girls. I am glad I read the book after my friend recommended it and I might try and watch an episode of Made in Chelsea. I'd definitely recommend this book to people who liked Made in Chelsea!
It was such an interesting read! I knew a fair bit about Spenny as I love Made In Chelsea, but have never known anything about his past. From reading about him losing his older brother at a young age to how respectful he actually is to his friends, family and ex girlfriends, it was a brilliant and exciting book. I found that I never wanted to put the book down and was constantly flying through, especially when he mentioned many of his drug experiences. I would recommend this to everyone as you don't need to know anything about Spencer or even like him before reading this. Before I read this, I always had the impression that Spencer was quite an arrogant, misogynist kinda guy, although I still really liked him! This book has totally changed my perception of him; I would recommend this to everyone!
This book was a really good read. I originally bought it as I am a fan of the show and it was reduced to 4.99. However his childhood and upbringing was really interesting and the pat of his life that included made in Chelsea is only the last few chapters of the book. The rest of the book tells a wonderful story and at times I forgot he was telling his life as spencer Matthews. Brilliant book very well written and couldn't put it down I finished the book within 2 nights.
I liked this book. I used to watch Made In Chelsea but stopped watching it when it stopped on Netflix. I have heard so many rumours about Spencer Matthews being a player and over-confident, so I wanted to read about the real Spencer. It was a great insight to his background as he was fortunate. Still wouldn't be mad about him as a person, but at least I got to see the real him.
I was recommended this book by a friend and wasn't too keen to read it as I watch Made in Chelsea and am not a fan of Spencer. I have to say this book has changed my opinion of him - he's not the entitled twerp I thought he was. It was an easy enjoyable read which gave me an insight into his life. Good for MIC fans.
More of a propaganda pamphlet than a biography, really, but I still couldn't put it down! Spencer has definitely had a more interesting life than most reality TV stars and has plenty of good stories to tell...even if some do seem to have been a bit embellished. An entertaining read even if you're not a huge fan of MiC.
Very interesting read. He's one for getting up to mischief, party goer and its interesting to see what a full life he's lead and his experiences, particularly with women.
As a big fan of the show I now have a much better understanding of the loveable rogue that is spencer Matthews. If you enjoy made in Chelsea ten you'll enjoy this book
