Matt Fraction

"How he got started in comics: In 1983, when Fraction was 7 years old and growing up in Kansas City, Mo., he became fascinated by the U.S. invasion of Grenada and created his own newspaper to explain the event. "I've always been story-driven, telling stories with pictures and words," he said.

Education and first job: Fraction never graduated from college. He stopped half a semester short of an art degree at Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri in 1998 to take a job as a Web designer and managing editor of a magazine about Internet culture.

"My mother was not happy about that," he said.

But that gig led Fraction and his co-workers to split off and launch MK12, a boutique graphic design and production firm in Kansas City that created the opening credits for the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace."

Big break: While writing and directing live-action shoots at MK12, Fraction spent his spare time writing comics and pitching his books each year to publishers at Comic-Con. Two books sold: "The Last of the Independents," published in 2003 by AiT/Planet Lar, and "Casanova," published in 2006 by Image Comics.

Fraction traveled extensively on commercial shoots. Then his wife got pregnant. So Fraction did what any rational man in his position would do -- he quit his job at MK12 to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time comic book writer.

Say what? "It was terrifying," said Fraction, who now lives in Portland, Ore. "I was married. We had a house. We had a baby coming. And I just quit my job."

Marvel hired Fraction in June 2006, thanks largely to the success of his other two comics. "I got very lucky," he half-joked. "If it hadn't worked out, I would have had to move back in with my parents.

Tony Stark vs. Norman Osborn

Although it doesn’t say it on the cover (shockingly), this is a Dark Reign tie-in.

This showdown is a long time coming, stretching back to the Civil War crossover, where Stark brainwashed/drugged/manipulated Osborn and had him go on a killing spree dressed as the Green Goblin. It wasn’t one of Stark’s finer moments.

Fast forward past the Skrull Invasion crossover: Osborn is in as head of SHIELD HAMMER and Stark is out.

“Tony, how about those super-secret superhero identity files.”

“Norman, I’ll email them to you. Make sure you download that computer virus that will destroy everything Spider-Man screensaver too.”

Tony’s status quickly upgrades from “person of interest” to “fugitive from justice” and he, accompanied by Maria Hill and Pepper Potts, find themselves on the run.

Problem: Tony has the super-secret superhero identity files (along with a couple of GBs of porn) downloaded into his brain. How to get them out?

Solution: Have sex with Maria Hill, worry about the files later.

Problem: Pepper Potts is now head of Stark Industries; however, Stark Industries is now under assault by HAMMER. Give yourself a bonus, Pepper, before it’s too late.

Solution: Tony gives Pepper a suit of her own. The problem: it has no offensive capabilities.

This volume is light on the action and heavy on the intrigue; it’s more of a chess match than a slugfest. Pepper Potts has gone from cipher to fully realized human being. Tony Stark has gone from major asshat to a sort of fully realized human being. Fraction’s work here not only ranks with his best but is arguably the greatest Iron Man storyline ever.

The American public can be so unforgiving. Poor Tony Stark just had one little alien Secret Invasion happen on his watch as SHIELD’s director, and he gets fired. Then Norman Osborn takes over as head of keeping the super humans in line because you might as well put a ‘reformed’ super villain in charge. It worked so well with Dick Cheney after all.

So Tony is out of SHIELD, his company is imploding thanks to the failures of Stark tech due to a computer virus during the invasion, and half the superheroes hate him for his role in Marvel’s Civil War. Things get worse when Tony plants his own computer virus into the network to keep Osborn from getting his hands on more of the Iron Man tech and the super human registry database. Osborn immediately frames Stark and his former SHIELD deputy director Maria Hill as traitors who collaborated during the invasion and Tony has to go underground.

Unfortunately, the last copy of the critical data was uploaded into Stark’s brain as part of the Extremis program that had linked him to the previous version of the armor. To make sure that Osborn doesn’t get his hands on the info, Stark initiates a program that will eventually wipe his mind and then tries to destroy hidden stockpiles of Iron Man armor. Osborn isn’t content with just setting the world’s police forces after Tony, he also puts a bounty on his head with the super baddie community, too. On the run and forced to use older versions of his armor as his intellect starts to degrade, Stark has to face a variety of threats from War Machine to Namor. But he also managed to leave a very special severance package for Pepper Potts.

This is another great set of Iron Man stories and it was an interesting twist to put Tony, who had been acting as America’s Official Barney Bad-Ass when it came to chasing unregistered superheroes after the Civil War, into the role of fugitive who is trying to protect the secrets the registered super humans entrusted him with. Things might be a shade confusing for those who didn’t know what was going on in the Marvel universe at the time, but it’s not too hard to figure out what’s happening.

My thoughts on it are the same like last time reading it and omg its just so epic. The thrill and the chase with Osborn hunting Stark and the way it happens and him on the run and maybe fighting War machine and Namor on the way and then the stuff with Shockwave in the end meanwhile Hill has to contend with "Controller" and Pepper with her new suit and Osborn still hunting them, its so well done, one of the best Iron man stories easily like there's tension and drama and really establishing Osborne as a great villain for Tony. There are some moments here that just gets their character perfectly too like Osborn searching for Spider-man's identity as he gets the database lol. That makes for some fun stuff haha!

This was so good!

It starts after Secret Invasion and with Osborne becoming the top cop he is targeting Tony and like wants the Database and well Stark has taken it and since the former has all the power he uses it to target him and well destroy him. Its the classic scenario of hero on the run and its so action packed, Tony fleeing everywhere and well separate storylines for Maria and Pepper. One is busy fighting the controller or finding some database and well pepper is rescue?! And well run ins and Tony has to fight his friend War machine then engage with Shock wave and soon: Madame masque!

Its an epic volume with so much action and the classic hero on the run tropes and with the world's most secure database with him and out of Extremis and basic suits what will Tony do and what revelations he will find? Also what will he do next? Its just such a great book and this volume is better than the last one and the stakes are just rising and its awesome to see and I love the art, Larroca is just getting better and better! Its a must read for any Iron man fan.

So what happens when the Green Goblin is running the world? Well, you go on the run because shittttt he's after ya!

This starts off after the events of "Dark Reign" which means Osborn is running shit. He's disassembled SHIELD and is going after Stark. Of course Tony doesn't take chances and all the files on each superhero from the Civil war files is now stored inside, yep you guessed it, his fucking BRAIN. So what does he do? He goes on the run from Osborn but the goblin doesn't give up that easily. He sends as many people as need be to hunt down the billionaire.

Good: The art remains good. Some amazing fight scenes shown on display here. I also enjoyed Tony's self sacrificing moments. Even doing so he tricks people but in a way he's doing it to protect them. He remains who he is. I also loved Pepper's moments here.

Bad: The stuff with Hill in the 2nd half is really odd and not very interesting tbh. I also thought the namor stuff felt pushed in just because, well, he is under water!

Overall a fun ride but nothing spectacular. I can't put my finger on it but this series lacks a little something. Either way I'll finish up the Most Wanted storyline and probably stop unless that volume blows me away. This is a 3 out of 5.

The funny thing about World's Most Wanted - Book 1 -- I thought it started out a little boring, and it felt like there was a slightly jarring disconnect from prior volume The Five Nightmares, which I had read only two weeks ago. But soon enough things started to satisfyingly fall into place . . .

The action and suspense was cranked up as Tony Stark goes on the run from Norman Osborn's HAMMER, but let's also not forget to mention Pepper Potts and Maria Hill. They began to really shine with their heroism and grit. In fact, there was one starkly (haha) effective page which tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about Hill's background in only nine panels. Of course it all ends with a cliff-hanger - plus the appearance of villainous Madam Masque (a highlight of Fraction's later Hawkeye series with Kate Bishop's LA adventures) - and now I'm really looking forward to Book 2.

Wow, you can really tell that Marvel put its top, top people on this book following the popularity of the Iron Man films. Every page screams quality, this is an Invincible run by Messers Fraction and Larroca.

I have never been a big Tony Stark fan. Some good stuff has been done. Some interesting stuff has come and gone. Yet Tony has been part of some great stories.

This story line following the Civil War stuff has been fun.
Pepper Potts is one of the better side-characters in the Marvel Universe.
Pepper in an Iron Man suit is perfect.

Warning: Don't read this GN if you haven't read the Secret Wars (or know about it). I knew a little about it, but I've never been able to actually read that arc, so I was a little confused as to what was going on. What!? I just... What? That was frustrating.

I also kept wanting to ask the characters what in the world did they think they were doing? (Besides being idiots I mean.) I was just so frustrated by the choices they were making. Trying not to spoil too much so... yah.

The art was amazing--LOVED it.

Yes. Just, yes. This 2nd volume takes place after Zeke Stane's attack on Stark, and right after the Secret Invasion, which places Norman Osborn in charge of SHIELD and Tony out of power and public enemy #1. Pepper Potts is in for a whole new life, Maria Hill is on the run as well, and even War Machine can't help Tony. But Tony may have a crazy idea that could just save the day...but it won't happen overnight. Also featuring a Namor appearance...

Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron, Iron, Iron Man ....
I like this book. Is very well drawn. I like the illustrations, not because I m Iron Man fan, but because are very pretty. I think that the crayons fits well here, with some accents of gel pens. Fans of Iron Man and Avengers will like it.

I’m continuing my reread journey of Matt Fraction’s run of Invincible Iron Man. Worlds Most Wanted sees a big change in Iron Man’s status quo.

Set after the events of the Skrull Invasion, Tony Stark has lost everything. He is no longer director of SHIELD, CEO of Stark Industries or an Avenger. He is on the run. The instigator of this - Norman Osborn, head of HAMMER the replacement of SHIELD. He also has his own Iron Man suit with the Iron Patriot. Stepping up from Spider-Man villain to threat the wider Marvel universe. This is the beginning of the Dark Reign event.

Tony isn’t completely alone as the action swaps between his escape from Osborn’s forces, to Maria Hill carrying out a secret mission which leads to some unexpected creepy moments, and Pepper Potts getting a significant upgrade!

A great balance between plot and character work, plus action packed scenes.

The artwork, like the previous volume The Five Nightmares is outstanding.

I highly recommend this. Due to its setting after Secret Invasion, you don’t need to have read the previous Iron Man volume to enjoy this.

Tony Stark je na úteku. Akoby povedal Saša z filmu Pelíšky: Karma, to je osud, víš?
Fractionovho Iron-Mana som začal čítať primárne kvôli tomu, aby som sa dozvedel viac o osudoch Tonyho Starka počas vlády Normana Osborna. V ére Dark Reign sa totiž Tony akoby pod zem prepadol a ani v jednom z titulov Avengers o ňom nebola takmer žiadna zmienka. A ako vidím, bol na to dôvod. Tonyho pád “from hero to zero” je skvele rozohraný, pričom vďaka agentke Hillovej a Pepper Pottsovej tu máme dokonca tri dejové linky. Na digitálnu kresbu a coloring som si buď zvykol alebo je naozaj menej útrpná ako v predchádzajúcom diele.

I pretty much stopped reading the big Marvel events after Civil War (mostly as I couldn't afford to keep up), so Secret Invasion and Dark Reign mostly passed me by (which is odd given how Norman Osborn centric Dark Reign is - there was very little knock on effect in the Spider-Man books from what I recall). Anyway, the second volume of Matt Fraction's run assumes you know what occurred in Secret Invasion (thankfully there's a handy primer at the start to bring you up to speed) and kicks straight off with Stark as public enemy number 1.

It's a little jarring if you're just reading this series moving from beaten down but hopeful at the end of the first volume, to contemplating suicide as a means of protecting state secrets. Still it's an intriguing premise even if it is a series of escape and evade scenes. Pepper is given something useful to do though Maria Hill gets shafted with a mostly inconsequential side quest (which really could have been left out).

Saying all that, this first volume is only half of this run so maybe it makes more sense in the second volume.

The artwork is not doing it for me. Salvador Larroca appears to just be inking over photos - I've never liked that style - while it creates some very real faces, they just look like still photos and seem to lose the dynamism of a truly great visual artist. Still, it's not enough to ruin it for me.

Onwards.

I have become an absolute fan of Matt Fraction's work on the Invincible Iron Man. He has single handedly managed to pull off a story worth to be stocked away in the selves.

Let the most crooked entrepreneur lead the most versatile and dangerous espionage organization in the world and what does he do foremost on coming to power? He decides to settle his personal vendetta. The story highlights that characteristics of Tony Stark that one does not see often. To protect the people who tend to dish him out as a cocky, arrogant prick at times, he decides to delete his mind and presumably risk being brain dead.
:x

That takes a hell lot of spirit and guts, not to mention a pretty messed up sense of heroism. Moreover, the machocistic nature of the Billionaire playboy on the run and losing his mind, consequently losing his ability to be a more sophisticated Iron Man only makes the story more sophisticated and keeps the reader on the edge of the couch.

Soundtrack: Can't Pin Me Down by Marina & The Diamonds (for Maria Hill <3)

"Well. No turning back now."

The Invincible Iron Man, Volume 2: World's Most Wanted, Book 1 shows the real brilliance of Tony Stark and his world. The artwork is stunning, the dialogue is sharp, the stakes just get higher and higher. This, right here, is what I always hope for in a graphic novel.

So, I'm guessing my next move will be buying the next in the series, because I. Have. To. Know. What. Comes. Next.

Others in this Series:
1.) The Invincible Iron Man, Volume 3: World's Most Wanted, Book 2 - To Be Reviewed

Eh, I don't know. A) I'm not a big fan of this whole Dark Reign affair and B) I like Tony, I really do, but so far I'm not sure I really care about anyone else in this book. I'm going to wait and see, however.

As I said, this book is part of the Dark Reign crossover event thingamaging, and we love those! Right! Since the entire Superhero Registration database is stored on Tony's harddrive/brain and he refuses to hand the data over to Norman Osborn, Tony is now on the run, while Pepper and Maria Hill also have their own missions. It's not bad, but it also didn't exactly blow me away so far.

Reprints Invincible Iron Man #8-13. Tony Stark goes on the run and Pepper adjusts to new armor. The Invincible Iron Man book isn't bad if you like Iron Man. It has what you expect from an Iron Man comic (technology and action), but it seems a bit drawn out. The comic really doesn't have much resolution which is unusual with the standard "six issue" story arcs that dominate the market now.

Nota 7,75.

Better than The Five Nightmares, but that's not saying much. The first half of a Dark Reign tie-in arc in which Tony deletes his brain and goes on the run from Norman Osborn in increasingly low-tech old suits as his memory fails him. Features side plots of Maria Hill versus the Controller and Pepper becoming Rescue, which she seems very enthusiastic about for someone who did not want to be a superhero as recently as three issues ago. I... really do not like how Matt Fraction writes Tony.

I like the idea of the brain delete in theory, but I am not really a fan of the execution here.

Following the events of Secret Invasion, Stark has now stepped down from the role of S.H.I.E.L.D. director, a title now held by the villainous Norman Osborn and thus kicking off the "Dark Reign" era of Marvel Comics. Osborn's early priority in the top job is to catalog all superhero identities, but Stark stands in the way leading to him being designated as a most wanted individual. On the run with Maria Hill and Pepper Potts, Stark must make the most of his remaining allies and resources to fend off Osborn's incursions into this holdings. "World's Most Wanted" serves as a bit of a political thriller, and a nice step up from the previous volume by a bit.

I haven't read many Iron Man stories so far, but I assume this one is a pretty rare case of Tony Stark hiding from the government, not being able to do much of anything and having to rely on old suits and his friends to carry him through tough times.

I really like the threeway story telling, because we have Tony doing his thing, Pepper having her own storyline and Maria Hill as well. None of these storylines are bad and I hope they'll come together nicely at the end. So far I'm definitely intrigued.

Really enjoyed this. Filled in some gaps as I'd read some books proceeding and following this one. Loved that little Pepperony moment; didn't much care for the fact that he doffed Maria Hill purely because she was there... but that's Tony Stark for you. All in all an enjoyable, engrossing, action-packed story. I can't help but wonder if the illustrator referenced Josh Holloway (Sawyer in LOST) for his Tony, some of the facial expressions have an uncanny similarity.

Dark Reign begins and the stakes climb drastically. Intriguing good time. I'm probably in the minority but I do like Namor making his hubris felt and it smacking him back in the face.

Having now discovered Matt Fraction years after he made it big.

His plotting and his storytelling is so airtight and fun. He makes simple action sequences exciting by merely adding tiny touches that transform rote fisticuffs into a chance to develop character.

Best of all, this volume tells a stripped down tale, with very few big names, and manages to juggle an A Plot, a B Plot and a C Plot, never once letting any of them get stale.

It starts out interesting enough with Norman Osborn as new head of S.H.I.E.L.D., replacing Tony Stark after his tech failed miserably during Secret Invasion. Osborn is obviously not a good guy, so he starts hunting Stark to find out all the secrets of S.H.I.E.L.D. that Stark hid away.

This storyline is interesting, but Potts and Hill have their storylines going on that are less interesting and a tad convoluted, especially Hill’s. It is still a fun read and the art is pretty.

Holds up better than the first trade. I remember this part of the run the best, don’t may be the high mark, but we shall see. Either way, Fraction’s Norman Osborne is great. I like the trifecta of Tony, Pepper, and Maria Hill. And the art has also improved. Lorroca seems to be utilizing references better and the colors aren’t nearly as dark and distracting.
