Sadie Rose, carrying a heavy burden of guilt for her pa's death, meets with God's forgiveness and love in this tender story. The first in this adventure series for girls.
Hilda Stahl was an American author of middle grade and young adult novels, many of them in series. Most of her books are classified as Christian fiction.
Biography from one of her books: "Hilda Stahl was born and raised in the Nebraska sandhills. As a Young teen she attended Bible college, where she met her husband, Norman. They raised their seven children in Michigan, where she lived until her death in 1993. When Hilda was a young mother with three children, she saw an ad in a magazine for a correspondence course in writing. She took the test, passed it, and soon fell in love with writing. She wrote whenever she had free time, and eventually began to sell her work. The first Elizabeth Gail book, The Mystery at the Johnson Farm, was made into a movie in 1989. It was a real dream come true for Hilda. She wanted her books and their message of God's love and power to reach and help people all over the world. — biography from Elizabeth Gail and the Mystery at the Johnson Farm
The first half of the story is the children bickering with one another and chores. I thought because she butted heads with that man over the dog that things would get intense/interesting as things progressed. They did not.
The way that this story is written I do believe it was just written for the moral. Not for a plot or an interesting story. If there would have been more focus on the story I believe it could have gone down better.
Christian messages of of God's unconditional love, forgiveness and redemption through His son, Jesus, are deftly woven into this story of prairie migration, as Sadie's family starts a new life in Western Nebraska. First book in a Prarie Adventure series by midwestern author Hilda Stahl, SADIE ROSE presents us with a young heroine--a spunky 12-year-old girl who suffers from self-imposed guilt about her Pa's death. She refuses to adjust to Ma's new husband or to enjoy the family lifestyle which the Lord has provided them all.
Sadie Rose, the middle of 5 children, may be the runt of the family in terms of size, but she has the courage and feisty will to survive and protect her own--including a mistreated pup whom she rescues from a vicious old man. This brute finally stalks her and attempts kidnapping and worse. (Since this book is for young readers, no one dies.) This story will hold the interest of pre-teen girls, for the external plot is interesting, while the Eternal truths are tenderly expressed to reinforce a young Christian's faith.
I read these when I was an early teen, about 15 years ago. At the time I probably would have given them 3 stars, because I did enjoy them; however looking back at them and remembering as much as I can, a 2 is a stretch.
If you're a girl between the ages of 8 and 13, and you like wholesome/Christian fiction, you will probably like these books.
I grew up on this series and each book influenced me as a young child growing up in a Christian home how best I can serve God no matter what my age is. Even children can do the right thing; making moral choices isn't only for adults.
