I always loved stories and jokes. Even though I was absolutely terrible at spelling and grammar, I wanted to be a writer. I didn't know how to do that though, so I did a degree in Sociology and then worked lots of random jobs, while telling people that I wanted to be a writer.
I have been a pizza deliverer, insurance broker, shelf stacker, litter picker, photo-developer, receptionist, HR recruiter, admin assistant, office temp, cashier, waitress, customer service rep, barmaid, stand up comedian and a writer. I love being a writer the best.
I also love travelling, and am very lucky that I have been to lots of different places, including America, Africa, India, Thailand, France, Greece, Italy, Germany, Belgium and Cuba.
I now live in London with my husband and our two rescued cats (Smithers and Liono) and I hope that I get to write many more books and visit many more places.

My Best Friend and Other Enemies is a quick read only 202 pages but quickly grasped my attention by relating it to the childish behaviour and attitude coming from young girls today. My Best Friend and Other Enemies demonstrates the evil schemes and dirty tricks some children can inflict on one another, rather than solving there problems with words they use action, which never ends well.
My Best Friend and Other Enemies follows the life of Jessica, Natalie and Amelia, they are all year six student Hellfern Junior School. The story is told from Jessica's point of view, which again adds to the suspense of the book. Jessica and Amelia were getting along perfectly, until Amelia starts being catty and horrible towards Jessica, which leads to Natalie leaving poor Jessica to fend for herself in this horrific place called primary school! After a while the girls join two rival gangs both against one another for the ultimate prize of boys and popularity. But will the girls ever make up or will this childish war never be won? That's for you to find out.
I really enjoyed this story book, even though it was predictable at times it just summed up my life in primary school from the catty arguments over stupid things, just wanting to fit in, and on top of that not being yourself to please other people. I also loved how it wasn't confusing it was clear and that meant you could understand and relate to the book more than you would if you had words and names overloading your mind which can usually happen in these kind of stories.
Even though I did enjoy the book I felt that the beginning and middle were thoroughly explained and you understood the story but at the end the pacing was way too fast and needed further detail and depth, this could have easily filled up a few more chapters.
My favourite character has to be Jessica. Even though she was the victim in the book she turned her negative experience into a positive, her cartoon drawings flourished and long lasting friends were created. She saw the light at the end of the tunnel.
All in all this book was very interesting and I highly recommend it. You may not think you enjoy romance or soppy predictable books, but give this a try and you won’t regret it.

Es un libro con una edición muy trabajada, la portada es muy muy llamativa al ser naranja y llena de brillos y purpurina, por dentro está lleno de detalles, ilustraciones y demás cosas que la hacen muy especial y perfecto para llamar la atención de los jóvenes lectores. Además, es muy finito, con una tipografía cómoda y márgenes amplios, por lo que es perfecto para leer en el verano o para desconectar. Es el primero de una serie de libros (próximamente se publicaran los demás en España por Edebé) y no sé si tendrán los mismos personajes o no.
Mi mejor amiga y otras enemigas es una historia middle grade que nos habla de la amistad, la familia y los sueños.

I love this book it's a very easy read

Eigentlich bin ich ja nicht die Zielgruppe dieses Buches aber es hat mich echt verblüfft. Es war ganz anders als erwartet, aber im positiven Sinne.
Jess ist elf Jahre alt, hat es nicht so mit der Rechtschreibung, aber zeichnet umso lieber, besonders gerne Cartoons. Deshalb wird sie vom wildesten Mädchen der Schule auch Toons genannt und wird von ihr verschont. Jess ist wohl ganz hübsch, aber nicht cool und das juckt sie nicht wirklich, denn sie spielt gerne Schach und hat seit Kleinkindertagen eine beste Freundin Nathalie, mit der sie stets alles zusammen machte, bis plötzlich die stylische Amelie neu in die Klasse kommt und Nathalie für sich beansprucht und Jess loswerden will. Aus Eifersucht schreckt sie vor nichts zurück und mobbt Jess auf’s übelste. Aber Jess ist wirklich nett, will Nathalie aber nicht verlieren. Äußerst kreativ setzt sie sich zur Wehr und versucht dabei fair zu bleiben und nicht so fies wie Amelie. Aber das Ganze scheint aus dem Ruder zu laufen und sich immer weiter hochzuschaukeln. Hat Jess da wirklich eine Chance?
Jess ist witzig und kreativ. Es ist ihr völlig egal, daß sie nicht cool ist, sie ist so wie sie ist und ist eigentlich mit sich und der Welt zufrieden. Ich finde es total klasse, daß Jess sich nicht kleinkriegen läßt und das Problem mit eigenen Mitteln ohne Hilfe von Lehrern und Eltern zu lösen. Ihr Gedanken und Ideen finde ich unglaublich sympathisch. Ebenso wie ihren Umgang mit ihrem kleinen bisweilen recht eigenwilligen kleinen Bruder Ryan. Es ist so schön, wie sie feststellt, was sie alles auf die Beine stellen kann (ja, sie stellt immer wieder fest, daß sie genial ist, aber es außer ihr niemandem aufzufallen scheint). Langsam macht sie sich mit ihrem Zeichentalent und ihrer ironisch-sartirischen Feder einen Namen an der Schule. Ihre kleinen Zeichnungen und Gedanken verzieren ganz zahlreich die Seiten in schwarz-weiß. Das erweckt ein wenig den Eindruck, als könne man Jess in den Kopf schauen. Mit ihr zusammen vergrößert sich der Freundeskreis, was mir ausgesprochen gut gefällt, da sie ja nicht jede Unterrichtsstunde mit Nathalie gemeinsam hat.
Was ich an Jess so besonders liebenswert finde, ist daß sie gleichzeitig wunderbar normal und doch total besonders ist. Sie will einfach nicht so fies sein wie ihre „Feindin“, aber sich auch nicht alles gefallen lassen! Ein wunderbares Buch darüber, daß jedes Kind Stärken und Schwächen hat. Wenn es gerade ganz mies läuft, helfen einem die persönlichen Stärken dazu das Leben auch wieder zu ändern. Amelia mag viel schicker sein als Jess, aber die ist einfach witziger und hat viel mehr kreative Ideen! Mit ihr wird einem einfach nicht langweilig! Und sie steht dazu, daß sie noch ein Kind ist und auch gerne mal spielt, auch mit 11 Jahren. Ihr ist es nicht peinlich Verstecke zu bauen, durch die Büsche zu streifen und mit Ryan Lego zu spielen. Das ist auch gut so! Denn Ryans Lego Piraten inspirieren Jess immer wieder ungemein und verschaffen ihr die unglaublichsten Einsichten!

I judged this book by its cover initially and thought "Great - another insipid girlie book!" But I was wrong so wrong - I loved this book.
The heroine is feisty but lovely, incredibly funny and genuine and I would love to have her round for tea. A tale of friendship and loyalty that made me smile and laugh out loud and an absolutely great book for girls that shows girls in a really positive light and will give them confidence to be themselves - especially if they are having any friendship issues.
This book has been part of the Year 7 Bookbuzz promotion and whilst younger children would be able to read it I think the 10/11/12 year group would get the most from it.
Get it for your daughters now!

This story is about an English girl named Jessica who's best friend, Natalie, becomes friends with the new girl, Amelia, who is very mean to Jessica. In addition to dealing with friendship issues, she's also working out how to be a good big sister to her boisterous brother, Ryan, a good daughter to her parents who struggle with money and other issues, and how to be true to herself. She does a good job of problem solving her way through the book and has her own super power, cartooning.

I wanted to read a couple of smaller books while munching through the huge “First Man in Rome”. This is a bit of a contrast, which I got as it’s written by the wife of a comedian I follow. Written about and presumably for pre-teen or early teen girls, it follows an 11 year old Jessica as she finds her best friend pulled away by another girl, and tries to get her back by copying them, forming a secret gang, arranging a party and so on.
However the thing that gives her worth and makes a difference isn’t any of these things but her drawing skills, which impress her school chums. Of course there’s a reconciliation at the end.
Light reading obviously, intended for young ones, and definitely aimed at a certain type of girl. My own daughter was never interested in all the best-friend, popular girl drama that went on at school, so probably wouldn’t have related much to the main character.

This book was really interesting because it talks about friendship so it was really cool. This book is about a girl that her best friend was going to be in a play that is called “The Wizard of OZ” and she is going to be one of the leads. I think this book talks a lot about friendship so it is pretty good. I think this book will help me in my Hero’s Journey because it will help me to work on my friendship and sometimes we think that is not so important but sometimes it is. I would recommend this book to people that like friendship and that know french because the book is in french. This book was in my challenge zone because it was in french and I know french but I forgot a little bit so it was a little bit hard for me but it was okay.

This book is just amazing!! It is now one of my favourite books as really makes me so emotional. It’s about a girl who’s BFF (Natalie) had made a new friend Amelia, and soon Amelia and Natalie are going off together without Jess, who is the Main Character! It is so good and can’t wait to read the other three books of the series!

This book “my best friend and other enemies” is an insight to a girls life struggling with friendship failures. My daughter has been reading this book and loves it. She also mentioned that her favourite bit was the picture of the sheep( I forgot its name) that was based on Amelia. All together, amazing book,would recommend.

Ich bin definitiv schon zu alt für dieses Buch, aber für, ich sage mal 10-Jährige finde ich das Buch echt angemessen. Das einzige, was mich etwas stört ist, dass in gefühlt jedem Satz "Ich weiß, dass ich toll bin, aber wieso merkt das kein anderer?". Aber sonst war es echt gut.

I read this one really quickly, but really enjoyed it. Jessica and Natalie have been best friends forever, but when new girl Amelia comes along, Jessica feels pushed out. Amelia is pretty, popular, and mean, and Jessica is furious that she's stolen Natalie and is now turning her into a mean girl too. But Jessica is a very good cartoonist, with a wicked sense of humour -and soon finds new friends.
I liked this book a lot. I felt the portrayal of pre-teen girls was very realistic and honest. Natalie and Amelia are mean at times, but they're not cardboard cut-out mean girls with no soul. Jessica has her flaws. I really enjoyed Jessica's character - she has a wicked sense of humour and her observations of life at school and at home (which include a bonkers little brother and rebellious older sister, her parents' endless competition with their posh neighbours, and her mum's decision to put the family on an 'economy drive) are hilarious. Plus, there's this line:
'There is actually a practical application for pirate Lego in the real world. The same cannot be said of long division.'
For all the humour in this book, there's a serious side too, and Wilkins excellently captures the intensity of pre-teen/teen female friendships (and enemy-ships!) with all the bitchiness and hurt feelings as well as the good times and giggles. I also liked that there's no romance in this book, as it would have felt weird, but some nice positive girl-boy friendships which felt realistic given the age of the characters.
Reminded me a lot of Jacqueline Wilson/Louis Sachar/Cathy Cassidy, if you like those books, try these.

Meine Meinung:
„Meine schrecklich beste Freundin“ von Catherine Wilkins ist ein humorvolles Kinderbuch, das sich auf sehr umgängliche Weise u. a. mit dem Thema Mobbing befasst. Empfohlen wird es ab einem Alter von 10 Jahren.
Die 11-jährige Jessica verliert ihre beste Freundin an das neue Mädchen in der Klasse. Es kommt zu Streit, sowie gewollt und auch unbeabsichtigt, zu Mobbing. Jessica ist verletzt und schmiedet Rachepläne, obwohl sie eigentlich nur eines möchte: und zwar ihre beste Freundin zurück.
Nach dem großen Streit muss sich Jessica erst einmal auf sich besinnen, herausfinden, was sie will und was sie bereit ist, dafür zu tun. Sie ist ein kluges Köpfchen, das viel über sich und ihr Umfeld nachdenkt. Dabei gelingt es Catherine Wilkins ausgesprochen gut, ein harmonisches Gleichgewicht zwischen ihrer kindlichen Natur und den nötigen reflexiven Gedankengängen zu finden.
Die meiste Zeit verbringen wir in Jessicas Kopf, weswegen sich „Meine schrecklich beste Freundin und andere Katastrophen“ zumeist wie ein Tagebuch lesen lässt. Gelegentlich wendet sich die Protagonistin sogar ganz direkt an uns Leser. Ansonsten ist der Plot sehr kurzweilig und setzt viel auf Humor. Auch wenn also ein ernstes Thema wie Mobbing altersgerecht sehr zahm dargestellt wird, spielt die Autorin das keinesfalls herunter. Die Gefühle, die Jessica bei den Schikanen und auch ihren Gegenmaßnahmen empfindet, sind sehr authentisch. In viele Situationen konnte sogar ich mich (leider) noch hineinversetzen; die Zielgruppe wird sich also erst recht angesprochen fühlen. Ein Trostpflast für junge Mädchen (gewiss auch ein paar Jungs) und Lacher garantiert für Jedermann. 5/5 Bücher!

Die 11-jährige Jessica verliert ihre beste Freundin an das neue Mädchen in der Klasse. Es kommt zu Streit, sowie gewollt und auch unbeabsichtigt, zu Mobbing. Jessica ist verletzt und schmiedet Rachepläne, obwohl sie eigentlich nur eines möchte: und zwar ihre beste Freundin zurück.
Nach dem großen Streit muss sich Jessica erst einmal auf sich besinnen, herausfinden, was sie will und was sie bereit ist, dafür zu tun. Sie ist ein kluges Köpfchen, das viel über sich und ihr Umfeld nachdenkt. Dabei gelingt es Catherine Wilkins ausgesprochen gut, ein harmonisches Gleichgewicht zwischen ihrer kindlichen Natur und den nötigen reflexiven Gedankengängen zu finden.
Die meiste Zeit verbringen wir in Jessicas Kopf, weswegen sich „Meine schrecklich beste Freundin und andere Katastrophen“ zumeist wie ein Tagebuch lesen lässt. Gelegentlich wendet sich die Protagonistin sogar ganz direkt an uns Leser. Ansonsten ist der Plot sehr kurzweilig und setzt viel auf Humor. Auch wenn also ein ernstes Thema wie Mobbing altersgerecht sehr zahm dargestellt wird, spielt die Autorin das keinesfalls herunter. Die Gefühle, die Jessica bei den Schikanen und auch ihren Gegenmaßnahmen empfindet, sind sehr authentisch. The book My Best Friend and Other Enemies is part of a series of 4 different books, My School Musical and Other Punishments, My Great Success and Other Failures & My Brilliant Life and Other Disasters. This is an easy read fiction book but is still grasped my attention. The author of this book is Catherine Wilkins. She is still alive and is around the age 40 - 50 years old. She has a husband and a new baby daughter. She hopes she can write a lot more books and travel more places around the world. I think that this series of books is for ages 10+.
The book follow the life of Jessica, Natalie and Amelia. It shows what childish behaviour and attitude can come from girls today. In the book there are a lot of evil schemes and dirty tricks rather than solving problems with talking. Jessica and Natalie were getting along fine until Amelia started being very horrible against Jessica which leads to Natalie leaving poor Jessica by herself. After a while the girls join two rival gangs both against the ultimate prize of boys and popularity. But will the girls every make up or will this childish war ever be done. That is for you to find out. The story is told from Jessica’s point of view which again adds to some more suspense in the book.
I really enjoyed reading this book, even though sometimes it was very predictable what was going to happen. This book basically summed up my life and some of the stupid and childish arguments I had. The book was very clear and I was able to understand every bit without being confused. You could easily relate this book to many people as it is very common to have arguments.
Even though I really enjoyed the book I felt that the beginning and middle were very detailed and at the end it seemed like the author had a tension to get the book finished very quickly. I think that if the ending of the book was explained more thoroughly it could have made it more tense and make the book longer.
My favourite character is Jessica because I was in a similar situation twice so I can relate to what happened to her in the book. Even though she was the victim she was just herself and she was able to fix it that way. I think that this book is very interesting and I highly recommend it. You may think you don’t enjoy predictable soppy books but I would give this one a try.

Jessica und Natalie sind die besten Freundinnen - bis Amelia auftaucht. Amelia ist neu an der Schule, freundet sich mit Natalie an und ist die ganze Zeit zickig zu Jessica. Die beiden besten Freundinnen entfernen sich immer mehr voneinander, und als Amelia eine geheime Bande gründet, in der Jessica nicht erwünscht ist, herrscht ein Zickenkrieg zwischen den 3 Mädchen. Irgendetwas muss Jessica tun, sie muss sich wehren. Sie schmiedet einen Plan ...
Das Cover ist total bunt und besteht aus Zeichnungen von Jessica. Es passt wirklich gut zum Buch.
Jessica fühlt sich ausgeschlossen und allein, seit ihre beste Freundin sich von ihr abgewandt hat. Dass sie gemobbt wird, verletzt sie unheimlich. Aber es stachelt sie auch an, etwas mehr aus sich herauszukommen und neue Freunde zu finden.
Natalie fühlt sich hin und hergerissen zwischen ihrer besten Freundin und ihrer neuen Freundin. Sie wünscht sich doch nur, dass alle befreundet sind. Aber je mehr sie mit Amelia macht, desto mehr entfernt sie sich von Jessica. Dass sie nichts gegen die gemeinen Dinge tut, die Amelia zu Jessica sagt, macht es nicht besser. Natalie steht zwischen zwei Stühlen und weiß nicht, wie sie sich entscheiden soll.
Amelia ist die neue an der Schule und möchte die Anführerin sein. Alles, was sie sagt und tut, ist cool. Sie ist ganz schön zickig und will immer die Beste sein. Etwas weniger Ehrgeiz und weniger Zickereien würden ihr auf jeden Fall gut tun.
Das Buch behandelt die Themen Freundschaft, Zickereien und Mobbing. Dies sind Themen, die gerade im Jugendalter sehr wichtig sind und beachtet werden sollten. Die Geschichte war gut, aber einige Entwicklungen und Aktionen der Mädchen haben mir nicht so gefallen. Auch wenn die Mädchen und Jungen wirklich so agieren, so hätte ich mir das Buch ein bisschen anders gewünscht.
