Dollycas’s Thoughts

Our family loves to travel to Door County for day trips or family vacations so I feel right at home visiting Oosterling’s Live Bait, Bobbers, Belgian Fudge & Beer. I love all the local references.

In this second book of the series Ava is competing with two celebrity chefs, one of them has some crazy ideas for her fudge ingredients, in a fudge contest. Local leaders have been lined up as judges. As Ava works on her new fudge flavors, the other chefs can’t be in the same room together without feet and food flying. The event is being filmed for television so Ava tries to just stay out of the line of fire. But when one of the judges is found dead, the fights become the least of her worries. Especially when the sheriff starts to treat Ava as a suspect. Lloyd, the now deceased judge, was Ava’s grandfather’s best friend and owned quite a bit of local property. Ava quickly puts together a list of other suspects, now she just needs to figure out which one has fudged up her life this time.

The author has given us quite a mystery to chew on. A lot happens within these 352 pages. The story is much more complicated than it first appears and I was totally taken aback with the way things played out. Wow, I sure didn’t expect that ending.

We learn a lot about the history of Fisher’s Harbor, and some people’s plans to change the town and take away its charm. Ava is very concerned about those plans but also how they will affect her family, especially her grandparents.

I really enjoy the way the residents come together in times of distress and also in times of celebration. In this story we not only have a festival with a prom-like dance but a funeral. People always bring food to the family after a death and most funeral luncheons are potluck. Very familiar to me after the past few weeks. The dance was for the young and old alike and there were even bets placed on who Ava’s date would be. Her date was also quite a surprise and absolutely perfect.

The book not only has a beautiful setting, an awesome mystery, and terrific characters, it is also full of humor and a bit of romance. I highly recommend this book and if you can, take a real trip to Door County to take in all it has to offer from fudge, cherries, beer, cheese…oh and lighthouses, beautiful beaches and more. It is called The Cape Cod of the Midwest for good reason!

It's the first annual fudge contest in Fishers Harbor, a tourist town in Door County, Wisconsin at Oosterlings' Live Bait, Bobbers & Belgian Fudge & Beer, try saying that five times fast. Ava Oosterling loves making fudge at the shop she runs with her grandfather, Gil whom Ava affectionately calls, Gilpa. Ava asks two celebrity chefs to compete with her in the contest and everyone in Fishers Harbor is gearing up for the much anticipated contest but when Ava asks Lloyd, a prominate citizen in Fishers Harbor to be one of the judges and is soon found murdered, the police then wonder if Ava could be a suspect.

Ava soon finds out that Lloyd had been grumbling among residents that Ava's fudge was no good, Ava starts to suspect Lloyd was alot more sinister because of his strange real estate dealings meaning the end of Ava and her fudge and bait shop. I actually thought I knew who the killer was from the beginning but the author threw me for a loop when the true murderer surprised me. I could very easily imagine Fishers Harbor in my head as I was reading, feeling like I was transported there, I thought it was the perfect setting for a vacation and a murder where you least expect a murderer would be lurking.

Very suspenseful read, riveting and lovable characters, I'm a big fan of fudge I had the best fudge I ever tasted at a fudge shop in Niagara Falls, Ontario. This book brought back those memories for me.

I like the characters in this book, I like the setting, and I like the mystery premise. However, even though I enjoy those things, there are a few places where the action doesn't seem to fit exactly right and the characters don't behave as normal people probably would in similar situations. For example, There were a few more instances like this one where I thought the actions didn't make sense in a moving-the-plot-along-in-a-straightforward-manner. All of that being said, though, I do like this series, and will definitely read the next entry.

This was a good and enjoyable story.

This was a good and enjoyable story. I like Ava and the other characters although I’m not agreeing with her romantic choice. There was a lot to keep track of in this story and I’m still not on board with the bait/fudge shop.

What could possibly engage readers, beside great characters like Ava and Grandpa Gil? How about all the endearing people in Fishers' Harbor and FUDGE? I mustn't forget beautiful Door County, (If you haven't visited this beautiful place, I suggest you do and possibly a side trip to beautiful, but pricey, Wisconsin Dells.) I am a northern girl so Christine's books always seem to take me home. Christine also touches on the Belgian community, who had so much to contribute to that area of the country. Buy I am glad Christine never lost sight of the original subject, FUDGE. Ava finds herself in hot fudge again, and Grandpa Gil and the rest of the family stand behind Ava all the way, as do Ava's 2 love interests.
Be sure to check out the recipes at the end of the book, and keep an eye out for Five Alarm Fudge the next book in the series, which is due out in 2015.

For me this was a fun read. Ava again finds a dead body, this time it is her grandfather's best friend who owns real estate that valuable and historic. As she sticks her nose where it doesn't belong, family secrets and secrets of friends are discovered that could destroy everything.
The characters and settings are even more true to life this time and one thing that the author points out through Ava at the funeral really made me think. As the victim lay in the coffin, Ava thought, I never saw him/her dressed that way and empty handed. Why aren't people put to rest in clothes that they lived in, golf, tennis, gardening etc. made me think. Oh well I digress.
The story line had me so involved that while finding the killer was filled with some twists and turns, the fun for me the the under story of all the other characters and their lives which lead perfectly into the next book. Also I can't wait to try the Booyah recipe.

This story is all over the place. I found the first in the series to be the same. But it's full of quirky characters and I enjoyed the setting. Turned out to be a fun read though it took a little to long for the mystery to be resolved.

An early review copy lets me recommend this fun mystery shortly before its release. Watch for it! Or read the first book while you're waiting.

I came in on this second book in a series. Although there were a number of references to the first case, I never felt as though I had to know what had happened earlier in order to enjoy this story. Ava is in the process of being evicted from her rental cabin due to a property sale by the owner, her grandfather’s best her friend. Her very helpful former fiancé, whom she’d left at the altar, helps her move boxes into her fudge shop’s back room where she intends to live for the time being; meanwhile, her former husband and his dog are doing all they can to woo her back, her best friend is involved with a shady operator who put together a fudge festival during tourist season in Door County, Wisconsin and films the whole thing for a potential reality TV show. The celebrity candy makers selected to compete against Ava are doing their best to make Kitchen Nightmares look tame, and the lead judge—Ava’s landlord, a property owner with a lot of secrets—is inconveniently deceased. Murder or suicide? Oh, and the sheriff also thinks Ava is a pain, when he’s not trying to make a pass.

There’s certainly a lot going on this summer in Fisher’s Harbor, so it’s a good thing Ava can count on her family and employee, a young man with slight Asperger’s, to run the shop while she goes sleuthing, breaking and entering, stumbling across bodies, and taking people—and herself—to the nearest hospital. Hot Fudge Frameup is a whirlwind read with all the quaintness of an ethnic community of stubborn Belgians, romance with all the wrong people, an octogenarian marital toss-up, and a dog named Lucky Harbor that might make non-dog lovers, if not find him adorable, at least have a few giggles. Ava’s number of suitors got a little over the top for me, but otherwise, I enjoyed unwinding all the clues and aptly positioned red herrings to the end of the story.

Told in Ava’s first person voice throughout, likeable characters and fun subplots make Hot Fudge Frameup a fun virtual visit to a place I know and enjoy. The fudge-making background is intriguing. I would also consider reading the first book, as well as sequels. This book makes a great addition to Penguin’s cozy mystery line.

hot-fudge-frame-up-fudge-shop-mystery-christine-desmetThis was a good book but not one of my favorite cozy mysteries. This takes place in a small coastal town. Ava Oosterling is trying to make a go of her fudge business and they have decided to have a fudge contest for publicity. But things start falling apart quickly when the two other contestants have it out with each other any chance they get and then you have a lot of cheating going on behind the scences.

Ava gets a message that she is going to have to move from the home she’s lived in since coming back a year ago and has to move into the back room that is her fudge shop and her grandfathers bait shop. The one person responsible for the move is also a judge on the panel for the fudge contest. Ava is looking forward to the contest until the two celebrity chefs arrive and wreak havoc in Ava’s shop so Ava has to keep them apart as much as possible.

Now with the chefs taken care of Ava is called to Lloyd’s office and finds out that a threat has been made to the point of possible physical harm to someone if Ava wins, well, what’s a person to do but to look into it.

Sadly, the threat was turned into a promise when Lloyd is found dead and Ava thinks it has more to do with Lloyd’s outside interest instead of the Fudge Contest.

As the investigation is ongoing weird things keep happening, like someone running into Ava’s car and the package she was carrying disappears or the comings and goings of some of the people in the Fishers Harbor community of Door County, Wisconsin. To make matters worse some of the clues that Ava found and hid in her grandfather’s boat incriminates him in the murder of Lloyd. Sometimes the least likely person that would so such thinks is the very person you should keep close watch of.

This is a good book to read but for me it was a 3 because I could take it or leave it.

Hot Fudge Frame-Up is the second book in A Fudge Shop Mystery series.

Ava's landlord, Lloyd Mueller, is getting ready to sell the cabin that she has been living in. She has been busy moving into her fudge shop and getting ready for the first annual Fudge Festival. Ava's BFF, Pauline's boyfriend John Schultz is planning on taping the events surrounding the festival and has gotten Ava to bring in a couple of guest chefs for the contest. But, unfortunately the guest chef's can't work together and have made a mess of Ava's kitchen.

Soon a rock is thrown thru a window at the old lighthouse with a note saying that if Lloyd, one of the judges, doesn't make sure that Ava's loses, somebody will die. When Lloyd is the one to die in an apparent suicide, Ava puts her fudge making on hold to see if it was really suicide or possibly murder.

This is a very interesting small town mystery where most everyone knows each other and Ava has to be careful that she doesn't become the next death. Ava has the help of Dillon Rivers, the man that she left at the altar and who she still has feelings for and Sam, her boyfriend from her high school days. Her grandparents are very caring towards her and a bright spot in the community

Delicious sounding recipes are also included in the book.

Will be watching for the next book.

Although there were times I wanted to throttle Ava Oosterling for wearing me out by jumping to so many conclusions, I really enjoyed this second installment In the Fudge Shop series. We learn more about the entire cast of characters, get some great ideas for fudge (along with a few that are kind of scary), and generally get pulled right into this small town that I would very much like to visit. While I appreciate the recipes that are included, I am a little disappointed that they don't seem to be in keeping with how Ava's fudge is described. That said, perhaps the recipes as included are a bit more novice friendly. I love Lucky Harbor, would like a frilly apron, think an adult prom is a neat idea, think Ava rocked her debut at the prom, and Can't wait to see what happens next. Just don't start this series right after your doc tells you to reduce carbs. Yeesh!

Hot Fudge Frame-Up, the second in Christine DeSmet's A Fudge Shop Mystery series once again grabbed my desire for a great read, as well as my craving for a tasty mystery. With a fudge tasting contest just around the corner, protagonist, Ava Oosterling is just now cooling her heels after the diamond snafu in the first mystery. But when she finds local, likable Lloyd Mueller dead at the base of one of Door County's many historic lighthouses, Ava becomes suspect number one. The mystery begins. Who has outright ownership of Oosterling's Live Bait, Bobbers & Belgian Fudge & Beer? Is Grandpa, or Gilpa hiding something? And what might the celebrity judges have to do with Lloyd's demise. Take a sweet stroll DeSmet's latest to discover the truth and recipes for some first-rate fudge.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

What a clever cozy mystery! I just love the setting. Door County is one of my favorite vacation spots and I felt like I was part of the frame-up. Ava and her dog, Lucky Harbor, continue to crack me up and the complicated plot kept me on my toes. Hot Fudge Frame-Up is not only a great mystery, but informative as well. I learned so much about the early settlement of the area and the celebrations the different immigrants brought with them to that part of the country. As an added bonus, recipes from Ava and her family are included at the back of the novel. I can't wait to make some fudge, and read the third book in the series.

I feel impressed in this book more than the previous one. Ava Oosterling is energy, creative, and part-time sleuth girl. Many time she's a stubborn and simple-minded. but, she still proved the truth with her believe and courage. I like her family and friends. They are so colourful. especially Lucky Harbor, a fudge dog. Totally, Ms. DeSmet added more detail about history of the Door County. The plot murder mystery wasn't complicated. but, it was really interesting and enjoyable. I can't wait to read the next in the next year.

I really enjoyed this book. I hate to admit it but I stayed up past 4 this morning to finish it.There were so many possible suspects that it really did keep me guessing until almost the end. It made me laugh a little, cry a little and a whole lot of thinking about fudge. Some great recipes are at the end too so if you like cozies, and you like fudge you can't miss with this one. I'm ready for more of her work.

Ava has finally got her fudge shop hopping, her signature fudge flavors are a hit... now she has to tackle a fudge festival that has been dumped in her lap, move out of her cottage (which she loves), and try to keep anyone in her family safe from being arrested for murder... or becoming the killer's next victim.

Ava's business might be taking off but her personal life is a mess, and it seems to be spreading...

Book 2 keeps the excitement going! The characters are quirky and so real. I like the location and Belgium descendants theme as a new experience in learning new things. The plot and action keep going strong till the finish and no I did not who done it until I got there. Twists and turns in the murder and the love interest keep your interest. I am signed up for Book 3 at my library and can't wait.

Although Ava is the main character, Lucky Harbor stole the show. Without him things would have never gotten figured out. Loved the creative fudge name and recipes.
