A gripping, cinematic crime thriller from the scriptwriters known as the king and queen of Scandinavian crime, expertly crafted and full of twists and turns

The spring tides are the highest of the year in Nordkoster; the beach will be covered in particularly deep water tonight. Three men on the beach are digging a hole, covertly watched by a young boy. His intrigue turns to horror as he makes out the fourth figure of the woman for whom the hole is intended. Buried up to her neck in the sand, the high tide is rapidly approaching. Still screaming in terror, the victim takes her last breath as water fills her nose and mouth—in her stomach, she feels her baby kick. And her waters break. The abhorrent crime remains unsolved 24 years later; but gruesome violence is still prevalent. A gang has been killing homeless people in parks, filming their attacks, and broadcasting them on the internet. The police have their work cut out trying to keep abreast of the crime wave. Olivia Rönning hopes to follow in her father's footsteps and join their ranks in the next few months as she completes her training; she has only one last hurdle to overcome over the summer break, a challenge from her professor to pick a cold case and solve it. Should be simple, she thinks. Little does she know the world she is getting involved in, the danger she faces, and the ugly truths she risks uncovering.

Još jedan u nizu odličnih švedskih trilera! Izvrsno razrađen zaplet, osebujni likovi u jako dobro prikazanoj međusobnoj korelaciji; prisutna i kritika današnjih društvenih institucija, a čak imamo i dašak egzotike budući da se dio radnje odvija u mjestašcu Mal Pais- Kostarika. Od mene preporuka, posebno ljubiteljima žanra... Više u osvrtu.

Loved the plot. And a fun fact, so many insects in this novel, from ants to cockroaches to fire flies, I guess the author must be some sort of enthomologist!

Gostei bastante deste livro, apesar de, como sempre me acontece em livros nórdicos, me ter baralhado com os nomes estranhos e parecidos das personagens. Manteve-me sempre preso a narrativa e o não estava a espera do desfecho final.

There is this guy called Jelle and it’s really late so my brain starts playing the song Jell-o by Ariel Pink. Kill me? description

‘’...her mother had embraced the Scandinavian way of decorating a home.’’
So her home looks like an IKEA catalog?

‘’His days on twitter were over.’’

Apparently they turned this shit into a tv show. May be out, may not. I don’t fucking care. If you like cime/mystery shows look it up I guess. The book was ok. I’m not going to continue the series tho *I came to the conclusion that I don’t really like reading crime books*.
The thing with me and crime/mystery books is that I’m lazy and sometimes I read like 50pages and then I stop reading and I pick it up again after like a month. Sometimes I forget most of the things that happened so I don’t bother trying to solve the mystery. Kinda makes the experience less fun. This is what happened with this almost 500pages book that has too many POVs 😃.

How could I forget how much I enjoy a good Scandinavian mystery? One of my cousins asked me what I like so much about them and was surprised when I replied that I love how bleak they are! You just know to expect corrupt politicians, ruthless criminals, gruesome murders, and cold, nasty weather.

Spring Tide certainly begins with a particularly cruel murder, witnessed by a young boy. And then the game is on, and the authors hurtle the reader through a twistly, turny, convoluted plot that kept me turning pages.

People who dislike multiple points-of-view (especially occurring in the same chapter) may want to pass this one by. I myself find that style intriguing—okay, there was a page break, who am I reading now? It keeps my little grey cells actively engaged.

Extra credit for being able to surprise me with a few details—I guessed some, but missed other important angles, giving the end of book wrap-up a little extra oomph for me.

On the one hand a typical Swedish mystery, on the other hand quite unusual.

This story has more suspense and more unexpected twists than you would expect from a classical Swedish police mystery. Also the characters are a tad more unusual.

Very much recommended for anyone who would like to read a Swedish mystery with a bit more oomph behind it.
-----------------------------------------

Achja, meine Wertung: 4,5 Sterne, aufgerundet.

I didn't know that the authors are screenwriters when I read this, but it shows: the book could be taken as a classroom example of why scriptwriting and prose need different skills. The plotting is ok and some of the characters quite believable (others a bit flat though - with gaps that an actor would easily fill in), some of the turns and twists, of which there were many, quite unexpected. However, the writing in general is simply awful. The most annoying thing were the short oneliners that one might use conveying a cliffhanger, but when they appear on almost every page they tend to take the tension out, not increase it. Internal monologues of grown-up people were more fitting for preschoolers. And so on. All in all, whenever the authors tried to do something only prose can do and the camera cannot cover up, they failed. Sorry. This could have been a much better book.

Cilla and Rolf Borjlind are an established crime-writing partnership, with their television credits including the twenty-six Martin Beck films based on the hugely influential Sjowall/Wahloo books, the Swedish adaptation of Wallander and the Arne Dahl Intercrime series, recently broadcast on BBC4. So with this pedigree of screen-writing how did Spring Tide measure up?

Opening with the unsettling murder of a young pregnant woman at the time of the spring tide, twenty-four years previously and now designated as a cold case: a case which a young police trainee, Olivia Ronning, is designated as a summer project. The plot unfolds in a number of directions, bringing the reader into the world of contemporary Sweden and a series of brutal attacks on the homeless community, cold-bloodedly filmed and uploaded to social media sites, a series of attacks that the police are failing to solve. Slowly, the two cases become intertwined, as Olivia joins forces with ex-police officer Tom Stilton, who served with Olivia’s late father on the original spring tide murder investigation, but is now a member of the homeless community, with all the dangers this presents. The central joy of this book is that these two storylines are both equally compelling, and as Olivia’s investigation gathers speed, there is a shocking expose of members of the higher echelons of Sweden’s business community and their rum goings-on, linked to the shady world of the sex-trade. So often in books, there is a sense in the reader that they are wishing to return quickly to one strand over another, but I felt that the interweaving between the two, and the sordid realities they throw up in the overall plot were perfectly executed throughout. The writing is tight, precise and unyielding in its blunt descriptions of this world of sex, violence and human relationships. At times, the realities presented have a powerful emotional affect, particularly in the bonds of friendship between the homeless protagonists, and even more so in the re-assimilation of Stilton into everyday life as he is drawn into Olivia’s cold case investigation, and the inherent dangers that lie within a trip to his past and the capture of a killer.

Despite the grim nature of both investigations, this is a book punctuated by moments of teasing humour, redolent of the lighter side of Scandinavian crime fiction, and the repartee between certain characters, and the throwaway humorous remarks are beautifully placed throughout. Both Olivia and Tom are convincing, empathetic and I loved the, at times, wide-eyed naivety of Olivia tempered against her terrier- like and dogged pursuit of the truth in her cold case, and the physical dangers she never shies away from. She is a lovely character all round in her feistiness, and her sheer empathy to the victims of society ills, which makes the finale of the book all the more poignant as home truths are delivered to her with the force of a runaway train. Tom is a man of exceptional integrity, but fully encompasses the notion of people becoming adrift in society, and the nefarious paths and life choices that can be made- not always the good choices. I loved this multi-layered character and the way that he and Olivia were almost a reflection of each other, despite the wide differences in terms of age and gender, linked by their personal integrity and quest for justice.

So it is with some delight that I read that the second book has been published in Sweden, as Spring Tide is a great opener to a series. With its wonderfully balanced mix of murder mystery, a host of fascinating and multi-faceted characters, and the essential social comment of Scandinavian crime fiction , this was an altogether satisfying read that genuinely kept me reading to the wee small hours. Next one now. Please.

I only read this after seeing the excellent miniseries made from it ... which left me with a few questions I thought the book could supply some answers to ... and DID! The authors are primarily known as scriptwriters for Swedish film/TV, and unfortunately, that shows. The prose here is nothing special (in fact, barely competent), perhaps hampered by a rather flat translation. However, what a terrifically well plotted and structured mystery, that focusses on three separate strands that all eventually intersect. And that final twist has got to be one of the more surprising/satisfying ones ever (no spoilers!).

This MAY be one of the few times where the film adaptation is much better than the book - not only because at 7 hours, they could really take the time to develop the characters and film virtually every scene, but the actors are all excellent, and they made some really wise changes - e.g., they made the protagonist's female BFF into a gay male, allowing for some witty repartee, and they switched the functions of the mining magnates Linn and Bertil. Inexplicably, they truncated some of the final revelatory scenes badly, which lead to my aforementioned confusion. Since there are literally over two dozen major and semi-major characters, it also helped in reading it to have the actor's faces to help me remember who's who.

This is the first in now a six book series focusing on the two lead characters, Tom and Olivia, and unfortunately, only one other has been translated so far (and also filmed). At some future date, I'll probably read/see that one also.

Știam echipa Börjlind din scenarii, îi socoteam printre scenariștii suedezi preferați, am văzut serialul după „Maree înaltă” - ba chiar, în timp ce citeam cartea, am văzut și sezonul 2 - așa că așteptările mele erau mari. Ce s-a ales de ele?
Păi, s-a ales bine.

Normally I think these Nordic crime fiction/mystery books are way too dark and slow. The only author I still like is Camilla Läckberg. So, when I saw this book it was like - well, blurb sounds good, I'll give it a try. Imagine my surprise when I couldn't put it down! It started with a bang, the murder in the past, and then moved to today, well 2011, with a very complex storyline with lots of characters. Eventually everything came together and all questions were answered. I'm glad I found a new captivating series and now I'm off to reading the second book.
