Quirky and clumsy twenty-two-year-old Paige Crawford arrives in London on a cold Saturday in January. Just when Paige starts to think that moving thousands of miles away from home with no real plan was a bad idea, Jason Frost appears. Confident and classy, Jason is the complete opposite of Paige and just what she needs in her life, or so she thinks.
But before their romance has time to blossom, Paige trips and falls into the arms of a mysterious man on a drunken night out. She’s snapped by paparazzi, and newspaper headlines the next day suggest that she’s having an affair with a married footballer.
Paige finds herself instantly elevated to tabloid celebrity status which isn’t exactly a picnic, particularly when trying to juggle her new job at Fashionista magazine, a catalog of dating disasters and a nagging doubt that she maybe she can’t conquer London after all.
When a trip back to Canada for Christmas reminds Paige why she left her old life behind, she returns to London with renewed vigor realizing that while jobs, flats and men may come and go, friends in London are forever.
Growing up in Edmonton, Canada, a significant amount of Stephanie’s time was spent making up and acting out stories. She was studying to be an actress when she realized there weren’t any parts for women being written. So, Stephanie wrote herself a short screenplay just to be in it and quickly realized that writing was her true passion. She graduated from the University of Alberta with an English and Sociology degree and she also has a Bachelor of Motion Picture Arts from Red Deer College. She moved to New York on a whim after University and has written a variety of TV shows including an environmentally friendly lifestyle series and a tween magazine style show about celebrities. Stephanie moved to London in 2008 and aside from being obsessed with Eggs Benedict, shoes, Fruit Roll Ups and travelling, she also works in Children’s Television.
The book revolves mainly around Paige, a 22-year-old girl who has just moved to London in order to begin a new life. Like anyone else, she is nervous and excited about her life in London, which seems to start off pretty well when she gets to know Lucinda (the person who comes to be the closest friend of Paige in London) and later is asked out by a handsome hunk Jason and ends up in The Box (not a literal one though). The story takes its pace from the moment Paige gets a little too drunk and trips and falls only to get held by an unknown stranger. Very soon afterwards, a gossip that spreads like a wildfire through every newspapers and magazines, claims that the superstar Chelsea footballer, “notorious ladies man”, Stuart Smith is dating someone behind his pop star wife’s back. And guess what? The front page is covered with Paige’s photo with the ‘unknown stranger’. Uh-oh.
Before Paige can understand the gravity of the situation and take necessary steps, things go totally out of hand. And her life’s never the same. It feels like a roller-coaster ride, thanks to all the news articles or magazines. Sometimes she’s having the most awesome moments of her life, and sometimes she’s apparently dying of heartbreak. And all these times, Paige is either too dumbstruck or frustrated to react. I loved Paige’s character in a way that it’s easy to connect with somehow. Even if you are not in the similar context, you can empathize. If you have ever heard or read or faced a rumor about you that was so shocking and pissing and life-alteringly disgusting, your heart would clearly go out for her (I’m saying that because mine did!)
Paige’s life in London carries out in a trial-and-error way. She makes mistakes, of course. She hopes to have a normal life, she hopes to date a normal guy; even when things are messed up, she tries to enjoy its perks. She is smart, brave and doesn't mind having those silly girlish plans or dreams. But at one point she finally understands some things isn't worth the risk. She can’t change what has happened, but her decision lets her set her priorities. Paige’s journey is beautifully and very realistically built. Her character is so well drawn that the more you read, the more you’d feel familiar with the character. There were times where I felt I was reading The Devil Wears Prada, one of the reasons I like this book.
For the minus sides, now, let me tell you it is a book loaded with potentials. Otherwise I wouldn't have liked it in the first place. But when a book starts off beautifully and is carried out so nicely, you cannot blame me for having high expectations from it. If I divide the book in three equal parts, I would say what disappointed me a little was the third part, along with the ending. It was good. But not the kind of ending I had expected. I am not asking for some mushy-gushy romance, but at least a little more than this (you’ll understand once you've read). Something about the ending seemed amiss, but I can’t quiet put my finger on it. Then, throughout the book, I often felt like I was reading a memoir. I’m NOT a memoir hater. Even though my blog doesn't feature any I do read them. But memoir-reading happens very rarely; it’s usually not something I like to discuss because I feel they’re someone’s personal experience and I kind of have no right to comment on it in any way. So there were moments I felt like Paige was an actual person and I was reading her travel memoir called “Days I spent in London and What I Learned”. I don’t mean to sound sarcastic, and I’m not being one. But I really believe the author has more potentials as a writer than it is shown here, I just wish I could have seen more.
The Accidental Socialite is a nice book with a pinch of everything- friendship, romance, comedy, troubles, frustration- you name it. Specially, if you enjoy themes like cross-country, cross-culture travel and the issues there with a mix of lighthearted fun and seriousness (even if that sounds confusing in my words), you may give this one a try.
Oh my goodness! I’m guessing the one scene that will stick with me forever when thinking about this book will be the scene almost at the beginning with the transvestite and the vodka bottle. Oh. My. Word. But then again, the encounter with Prince William in a posh nightclub had me in hysterics, so that might actually be the most memorable part of this story. Or no, wait, the advanced pilates class scenario was what really cracked me up! Whichever way, The Accidental Socialite ended up being a laugh a minute.
Paige Crawford, the British tabloids’ new darling, is literally a walking disaster. However sorry I felt for her on all her catastrophic romantic and non-romantic outings, I just...I couldn’t stop laughing! I don’t think that much bad luck can befall a person in real life, which just made it even more entertaining. At the same time my heart also went out to her, because she didn’t bring any of it on herself and she just wants to have fun. OK, maybe some of it is her own fault but geez, give a girl a break!
Oh heavens no, now that stupid Cindy Lauper song is on repeat in my head.
*sigh*
The plot and pacing reminded me a lot of Sophie Kinsella’s writing. It was, in one word: excellent! The only difference is that Paige isn’t as much of a ditzy airheaded protagonist as those Kinsella has in her books. Also Carlos, the gay friend, isn’t the stereotypical gay friend you find in most YA and women’s literature. I felt his character was toned down a lot, but even so he was just adorable. Definitely a memorable character. I also liked Lucinda, the bff Paige made the minute she got to London. I think I liked her mainly because she’s South African and reference was made to “biltong”. I’m a South African, so of course that just tickled me pink.
Paige has four flatmates, and although they’re secondary characters, they all play a small, but significant, role in Paige’s first year in London, with their magnificently varied and peculiar personalities. She lists them as follows (this is her third revised edition):
1. Sleeps with nut jobs on wet crack house mattresses, Gemma 2. Takes suitcases shopping, Philip 3. I’m not gay but I get BJs from dudes, Guillermo 4. Learns English via Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers), Natalie
One of the big plusses for me in this book was that I got to travel to London, Paris, Rome, and Verona, and even spend a weekend at the Oktoberfest in Munich. This book is all about sisters doing it for themselves as Paige experience the high life of a social butterfly while trying her best to get away from the paparazzi. She goes to great parties and events, makes drunken decisions, and meets every Mr Wrong imaginable. The ending was a pleasant surprise, and I applaud Wahlstrom for concluding the story with a positive message to young women about relationships. Remember what I said about sisters doing it for themselves?
Who would enjoy this? Fans of books by Sophie Kinsella, and anyone who loved the book or movie version of The Devil Wears Prada and/or Bridget Jones’s Diary. This is chick lit at its best! It contains a little profanity and a few hilarious over-eighteen descriptions, but overall The Accidental Socialite is a fun, funny, and one hundred percent unforgettable read!
Funny! I laughed so hard I had tears at one point!
This was a really fun summer read and I'm looking forward to the sequel. It shows a different sort of life than my own and that was fun to see the contrast.
The Accidental Socialite is a little bit on the bat shit crazy side and a whole lot of fun. It’s weird to say a read like this is relaxing because so many things were going on in the book but it was. I really enjoyed the hilarity of it and the characters. I could gush how much of a fun read this is.
Paige decides she’s going to give her life a spin on the wheel of fate and just up and moves from Canada to London. Not only is she faced with some serious culture shock but also finds herself in some interesting predicaments that lead her to becoming a sort of celebrity. Do you ever flip through a magazine and think who the heck is that person and why do we care about her, that’s Paige. With the insta fame and stalkerazzi comes a kick butt job at Fashionista and VIP access some of the most exclusive clubs, the bubbly never stops flowing.
I liked Paige a lot. She made me laugh and the things that happen to her are things that would happen to me. Pickle sandwiches are not made with Pickles? Fanny Packs...well do you even want to go there and so forth. She has to not only deal with some really crazy roommates, I love when she ranks how psycho they each are, to understanding the difference in the slang. Actually the difference between what many things are called. Every Time she was riding the Tube I was picturing her sitting on television or a tube of toothpaste. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that addresses the fact that it would be really hard to adapt in that respect. People go to London and they speak English so no biggie right. Wrong, there are so many words that have different meanings. Hey that girl is pissed….umm do you mean mad, going pee or just drunk...
I loved Lucinda and their insta friendship after meeting at the cafe and the way she tells it how it is. She doesn’t let Paige fall into a hole of despair and she has some serious wisdom sharing at the end. Sometimes I couldn’t decide if Carlos was a total asshat or awesome friend. Turns out he’s an awesome friend sometimes disguised as an asshat. The book revolves more around these characters friendships then it does a particular romantic relationship. It was fun to see Paige dating different guys and have different experiences rather than just focus on one guy to get all lovey dovey about, although there are guys who make reappearances. I love romance and I love romance stories but it was nice to read something that is really focused on the main character who doesn’t need a steady man to make her interesting. Paige is this whirlwind all on her own. With a couple of friends who have got her back and go on adventures with her.
This book was such a fun read. I really thought the craziness going on with Paige made me feel more relaxed about the craziness in my life. Like hey at least someone isn’t dragging a wet mattress into my house. If you are looking for something fun definitely pick up this book.
I’ve been reading a bit of Brit-Lit these days–and lurving it!–so this book caught me at a very good time. Paige is a total mess. She arrives in London with two suitcases and a rental room in a (practically) condemned building. Her four flatmates are all several degrees from normal and she knows NO ONE in town.
She meets her first Londoner–Jason–when her suitcases bursts on the sidewalk, unfortunately he’s from the US! But Jason is super hot, and invites her to an exclusive club the next night. She shows, bringing along Lucinda, the South African gal she met at breakfast. After too much free booze, she trips outside of the club, stumbling into a super-famous football (er, soccer to the USers) star whose marriage is purportedly on the rocks. The compromising photos make the front page of the tabloids, catapulting Paige into Z-list celebrity.
The book moves at a breakneck pace–not the least of which because Paige is forever getting drunk and falling down. And the dissolution of said-footballer’s marriage only increases Paige’s notoriety. She meets a fantastically cute doctor, Alex–after a pseudo-sex-injury debacle–who asks her out-only to ditch her when the paparazzi turn up.
Throughout, Paige’s luck seems to magnify–both good and bad. She gets a job writing ads for a fashion magazine and makes abso friends with Carlos and Lucinda, but her love life? Utter crap.
Guys are only into her for the minor celebrity she seems to cultivate. In fact, Jason–her somewhat steady guy–has a nasty habit of showing her off everywhere he takes her. Even to his PARENTS! Ugh. Enough of that D-bag, fo sho. Paige tries to meet different guys, branching out of her social scene and only comes up with duds and schmucks. Kinda sounds like regular hot girl problems.
Carlos and Luc take her on some continental excursions, so we get more than just the London social scene, but even the new locales don’t bring Paige good luck with the men.
It’s a cute book, lots of fun and vodka and champagne. Paige only has one drunken bender landing her in bed with Mr. Wrong (Jason the fame hound), but through it all she seems to come up smelling like, well…if a rose was watered with day-old beer and ran through the Tube at rush hour it might smell like Paige. It reminded me, a lot, of Bridget Jones–which is cool, as I liked that. Paige does end up on her own two Louboutin-clad feet in the end–with the men STILL clamoring for her. Surprisingly, the book is terrifyingly innocent. No smexytimes…but that’s cool.
The Accidental Socialite is one heck of a hilariously funny ride. You won't believe all of the crazy things one girl manages to get herself into. Paige packs up and moves to London after she graduated from university. Armed with a degree, very little cash and a couple of suitcases she goes to make something of herself. And what she gets is one thing after another. She goes on an adventure all ride, but it not the one that she thought she would. She is a hoot, and The Accidental Socialite will have you laughing out loud more times than you can count. It was a lot like reality TV for me, you can't turn away. There were a few parts of the book where I felt like the storyline was dragging, and not really progressing anywhere. That was a bit tiring, but I still felt this need to find out what was going to happen to Paige next.
Paige is a Canadian, and she is so clueless about pretty much everything about British culture. It was so funny to see her get words and phrases mixed up. Actually, I thought some of her funniest scenes were about the differences in cultural phrases. I loved her scene about "fannies". She thought she was talking about fanny packs and well, she wasn't. It was too funny. Plus, the whole Pickle sandwich fiasco. I was happy that her boss seemed to have a good sense of humor at least. I thought she was going to get fired countless times.
This is not your typical romance. It is not about finding that one great guy. It was more just like a series of unfortunate events and dates. It reminded me of the reality TV show, the Hills. Everyone is young and hot, there is so much drinking- every night of the week. These are adults in their 20s and 30s and they are out closing the clubs down 6-7 days a week. Way too much for me, but you can't help but be interested in it. This book is a guilty pleasure. Paige is a hot mess. She is falling all over herself, and bad thing after bad thing keeps happening to her. The media can't wait to tear her apart. But she is the train wreck of hot messes, you just can't stop watching. The humor is the highlight in The Accidental Socialite. Stephanie Wahlstrom is very talented and witty with her writing. I can't wait to read more humor from her, maybe a romantic comedy?
Paige Craftword has just graduated from university, but she has already decided to leave her hometown to move to London. She's had enough of her friends and family who think she's just a bland and ordinary person, so she impulsively packs her stuff, determined to leave the past behind her. The book starts off with Paige on her way to London, the city where she intends to make a fresh start and create a new identity. But unfortunately, all her plans get ruined when she accidentally catches the tabloids' attention due to an incident with a famous British footballer.
Paige is a clumsy and weird person who continuosly gets into awkward situations. The media follow her every move, so she doesn't have much of a private life anymore. In fact she often makes front page news because of some compromising and embarassing situations she gets herself into. I would have prefered dying if I were her, but Piage didn't give up and I liked that about her. I really enjoyed reading how she adjusts to the differences between American and British English, the misunderstandings were so hilarious that I couldn't keep myself from grinning.
There isn't really any love interest in this book because Paige has truly bad taste in guys, and I think it's funny how she can easily relate to Taylor Swift's songs. I also find it very interesting that Paige doesn't really want to commit to any type of serious relationship; I think it's quite understandable because she's still young and she just wants to have fun.
Although I found Paige pretty enjoyable to read, there were times when she could be really fussy, and I got frustrated for some of the choices she made. Furthermore, I felt like there were lots of clubbing and drinking in this book, but if you can overlook those issues you'll definitely enjoy reading The Accidental Socialite.
If you're looking for a fun and light read with lots of funny and embarassing moments, then you should read this book.
I received this book from YA Bound Book Tours for free in exchange for an honest review.
Paige Crawford takes a huge step in life when she moves thousand of miles away from her Canada home to London, where on her first dreary day she runs into Jason Frost while picking up her not so attractive underwear off the ground.
Paige has no idea what awaits her in London and just the type of crowd she got herself into to. But no sooner then allowing her new relationship to blossom, she accidentally trips while drunk and fall into a very famous athlete coming out of a club. The next thing Paige knows is that she is suddenly all over magazines and news as being a home-wrecker and the chain of events that follow only seem to escalate and are blown out of proportion.
Cute story, really had me laughing most of the time. Paige stumbles through her new London life with mistakes that she slowly learns how to fix. She has a couple of really strange and crazy roommates, living in a run down house on a used mattress. Has a terrible luck with finding love and a relationship, and keeps getting into bad situations that bring her back to the spotlight.
Thought it has some cliches, and unbelievable unrealistic moments. A couple of really funny jokes (taking tips from a magazine how to be sexy in bed? did not go so well in Paiges case) and odd jokes (bad teeth?). The Accidental Socialite is a book I still found hard to put down. Paige was amusing, funny and loud. She speaks her mind and isn't afraid of it. I felt both sad and happy for her, depending on how things went. I didn't like any of the men she found herself with, especially not Jason.
The trips that Paige took cross-country were fun and exciting. Filled with lots and lots of champagne and drinking. I don't think my liver has ever been so sympathetic towards a book character.
But the ending I felt was rewarding, and I love the message that Stephanie has left behind for us girls.
If you're looking for something that will seriously make you LAUGH OUT LOUD, this book is for you! I really enjoyed this book. I haven't laughed this hard since I read the Chocolate Lovers series by Tara Sivec! It had me laughing within the first few pages...
Paige Crawford has graduated college and booked a one way ticket to London. Within her first day there she makes friends and already has been invited out that first night to hang out. Later that night while leaving The Box, the club that Jason (the cute guy she meets outside her Flat when she first arrives) invites her to, Paige, being drunk, trips and falls into the arms of a well known soccer player while the paparazzi are there to capture it on film. The next day she's an insta-celeb, which ends up being both a blessing and a curse.
I really enjoyed this story, so much I couldn't put it down to go to bed. Though, I have to warn you: The most disturbing thing I've ever read in a book happened at the beginning of this story. Though doesn't mean it didn't have me laughing after going 'OMGWTF?!'
My reaction to it:
and then:
I really hope that there will be a sequel to this story, because I would like to see what other shenanigans Paige will get herself in to.
If you're looking for a book that will give you a good haha giggle snort, I definitely suggest you check this book out. ;)
The Accidental Socialite was fast-paced, maybe a bit too fast-paced to allow for full character development but as for a light-hearted read, this book was brilliantly entertaining! It was quick and all out fun – a great choice of book for those wanting a pick-me-up or something just to plaster a smile on your face.
Oh Paige – bless her – she didn’t have much luck! Her life seemed to roll from one ridiculous event to another and this book had me cracking up the whole way through. I laughed a whole lot through The Accidental Socialite and at times I just wished all books could be as fun as this one. Stand out moments for me were the Pilates class and Paige’s Fall for Fanny’s proposal which had me sat with a big stupid grin on my face.
The other characters, I don’t think we learnt too much about and at the beginning, I was getting confused by all the names and forgetting who they actually were. However, as the book went on, the two side characters which I really loved were Carlos and Lucinda. Carlos, the gay best friend, I thought was going to be ridiculously bitchy but actually he was fun and supportive and I liked his loyalty to Paige.
The Accidental Socialite was wonderful escapism – they say celebrity culture is a great thing to distract ourselves from our own lives and what better way than to laugh at the antics of a Z-list celebrity in a fabulous book?! Honestly, this book was a bit of a surprise package for me as I didn’t expect to love it like I did. As much as it was easy to laugh at Paige’s misfortune, she was a sweet character and easy to root for too, making The Accidental Socialite a wonderfully amusing book.
The story revolves around Paige who just like many other 22 year old's wants to get away from the town she used to call home and move to the big city that is London. Having just finished university, Paige thinks it is the perfect idea to start the rest of her life, and she can't be more excited and nervous at the same time.
Though London is completely different from her native home that is Canada, then again, with her new friend, Lucinda to talk to maybe life will be good living in a new city. Things seem to be going well for Paige in London, until she falls for a stranger, literally falls on them after she had a bit too much to drink one night.
Her life changes though she isn't sure if it is a good thing or not, though when her picture gets puts on the front cover of newspapers, accusing her of having a affair, with a married man who also happens to be famous. Paige is thrown into a life she never wanted, when she moved to London she had no idea her life would turn out this way, now she has to put right her mistakes and get back on the right track.
Paige is a true romantic girl that you would see in other chick-lit books or movies, with her kind nature and her smart wit she is everything you could want in a main character. This book displayed what happens when rumours get out of hand which many people can relate to. It also shows the journey a young woman takes to find herself by moving to a new country and trying to make a life for herself with a few bumps along the way.
The Accidental Socialite is a great new addition to the chick-lit genre, with the drama, funny moments, rumours and friendships it has everything you could want in a chick-lit novel. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves books by Adele Parks or Victoria Fox.
If I had to sum this book up in three words, they would be Marvellous, Witty and Wonderful.
Paige Crawford wanted a change in life , so one day she decided to move from the comforts of Canada to London, UK and little did she know within a couple of days of being in London her life was going to change dramatically and drastically as well. All because of one clumsy incident , Paige finds herself sky-rocketing from being a nobody and anonymous to becoming one of the most sought after socialites in London. Everyone wants a piece of Paige from the Paparazzi which is really starting to put a damper on her life as they follow and record her every move - even the unfortunate farting during Yoga incident to showing up when she is on a date. Turns out though you get all the glamour, freebies and invites -not to mention celebrity outings and being on a first-name basis, being in the limelight isn't all it is cracked up to be as Paige will also learn what it's like to be used, hated and even judged all in the name of a story spun out of out context.
A few lessons that The Accidental Socialite teaches readers is : A) Always look your best as you never know who might be around
B) Fame and Fortune isn't all it is cracked up to be
C) Never Believe everything you read in newspapers, magazines and tabloids.
The Accidental Socialite was a fun and light-hearted read which reminded me of the film "The Princess Diaries" , "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" crossed with "Monte Carlo".
The Accidental Socialite is a story about a young Canadian girl Paige Crawford chasing her career in one of the largest international city London Engand and finds herself in the crazies' awkward scenarios. She finds herself in a totally unique position of being part of the young high society in London. The writer keeps her heroine as a true Canadian girl; she picks herself up, brushes off any awkward situation, she walks away with her head held high. She leaves a smile on the readers face.
The Accidental Socialite is a fun, laugh out loud read. I couldn't put the book down. I don't believe I have ever read a book where I have actually laughed out loud. So well written, the writer really brings you into the story. You are there every step of the way with Paige Crawford, the good, is this for real, heartbreak and the laughter.
I can't wait to read the next Paige Crawford adventure, she is a remarkable, fun and a strong character. I will definitely recommend this book to all of my friends. For me this was 5/5 in fun and laughter.
The Accidental Socialite by Stephanie Wahlstrom is a hilarious romp through the London dating scene taken via a somewhat Bridget Jones-ish route. That is to say that anything that can go wrong for Paige will go wrong, but ultimately she comes out the other end better off, somehow.
A move to London from the US, knowing no-one and renting a dilapidated apartment we already know that Paige is ballsy. Dealing with the new-found fame caused my tripping into a footballers arms is the icing on the cake of disasters for paige.
If you loved Bridget Jones (movie or book) and/or love floundering Americans in England type stories then you will LOVE this one too. It's funny, light-hearted, very fade-to-black with the smexy stuff, but still a great read.
From the moment I picked up a copy of The Accidental Socialite I was hooked. I felt as if I were there with Paige as she found herself alone and in London with no idea what she was going to do but took the brave step by moving away because she wanted to see the world and discover herself in this new land. I know that if I were her I’d be scared, trying to find a new job, friends, and find a safer place to live… somewhere far away from creepy Phillip!!! Paige is fun character to read about, and this story reminded me a lot of the popular and quirky book and TV series, Gossip Girl except Paige is unfamiliar with the socialite, upperclass scene full of fashion, money, and paparazzi.
While parts of the story seem a little farfetched it’s a delightfully entertaining story full of humor, romance (more like botched dates), and endless champaign. I really enjoyed this story and definitely recommend picking up a copy!!
"In London I could be Paige Crawford,(fill in awesome life here), not Paige Crawford, wanna be current events journalist, weird Jackie's little sister and all around ordinary girl."
Let me start off by saying I LOVE books that take place in London. So I knew from the beginning I would love this book! The very beginning of the book already sucked me in. Poor Paige moved to London on a cold rainy night with a checklist of things of she planned to accomplish while making the move from Canada to London. What she didn't expect was to become practically famous after her first night out on the town. This book was so good! I loved it. It was so quirky and light hearted. I loved Paige, I found myself laughing so hard. I would recommend this book to a friend who is looking for a quick fun read. I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Stephanie Wahlstrom is full of talent and sure knows how to pull the reader in!
This is a funny light story of Paige’s first year in London. Her dating disasters and her life as a pseudo celebrity by accident is hysterical. She came to London hoping to take it by storm and instead it took her over. She ends up in the tabloids, dates douche bags, has the worst luck and her flatmates are nuts. Her job at Fashionista is her saving grace. Her coworkers Louis and Carlos crack me up and her friend Lucinda is a hoot.
As we read about her life that is just one train disaster after another you see how one mistake of falling can change your day and your world. Paige is hysterical and lost on her journey. That is until she goes home for a visit and her mom sets her straight. From than on she gets a determination like no other.
A absolutely funny page turning look at this young woman’s first year in London that changed her world. You’ll laugh hard and not put it down to the end and than you will want more of Paige and her friends
The lead character, Paige, is trying to find her feet in London having just moved from Canada. When she finds herself a tabloid starlet she doesn't want to seek fame but a meaningful place for herself in her new country. She travels Europe, she meets a variety of desirable (and less desirable men) and makes wonderful friends. Paige makes some questionable choices (like we all did at 22) but you forgive her everything because she is endearing and HILARIOUS.
Usually when I pick up a book of this genre I don't expect much from what I am about to read. I know the lead character will be flawed in some way and after some mishaps will find happiness through a handsome man and while there's a place for those stories I never enjoy them that much. The Accidental Socialite was not like this, it was SO different to the other chick lit books I'd read before.
The adventurous spirit in this story is quite contagious. There’s a hilarious Friends-sort of vibe throughout the dialogue. The cultural differences surprised me because (a) I’ve never been to Canada and (b) I’ve never been to England. This is a book best read by adults. There’s not a lot of high school drama in it, but the young adult scene is pretty heavy. There are several mentions of the F-word, some experimentation, and a bawdy scene with a beer bottle. While I enjoyed the accidental celebrity status that Paige stumbled upon, the romance roller coaster was quite a rocky ride. The Accidental Socialite would be a good beach book for the summer. I received this book to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.
It's sad but true that someone could become famous over night by accident!
What a fun story! Paige might be a crazy mess, but she has a great spirit. She makes some bad choices (drinking, Jason, more drinking) but shes a young 20 something in a new place - LONDON!
All Paige needed was to go home to Canada and reboot, then she was ready to take on London!
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars! This was a cute, fun story, with a happy ending for Paige. A great summer read!
Maybe I'm just too old for this kind of book. I felt like I was reading the same story with different men over and over again. A 22 year-old moves to London to see the world and live a little and ends up drunk and slutty time and time again.
There were a few parts that were funny but the repetition was boring. My 26 year-old daughter read it too and wasn't impressed...
Parts of this were very funny, but I’m not sure what the plot is. It reads like the author took a trip to Europe and decided to write a novel about it. The protagonist moves to London from Canada and stumbles into the most attractive people, the most exclusive clubs, and the coolest job. There are some minor mishaps that don’t seem to upset her much and there are day trips to major European cities. Finally, she declines a date. That’s it.
Outspoken, quirky, and insanely clumsy, 22 year old Paige Crawford leaves her life behind in Canada and moves to London. Upon arriving, her life quickly goes from one disaster to another. She meets Jason, charming and handsome, and Paige begins to think that maybe moving isn’t such a bad idea. But things aren’t always what they seem and after spending time with him, she realizes he’s just another creep. Her roommates are not exactly the kind of people you’d want to be hanging out with. Almost never around, but when they are, they’re not the friendliest bunch. Her friend Lucinda, whom she meets while eating at a deli, turns out to be a very close friend…which is just what she needs, considering all the trouble she seems to get into.
One night out and a few drinks too many begin the downward spiral of Paige’s life into the spotlight and all the negativity that comes with it. Literally falling into the arms of a married football player and having her picture taken, turns out to be the worst that could’ve happened to her as her face gets plastered over magazines and she’s labeled a home wrecker.
Paige lands a job at Fashionista magazine where she befriends Carlos, a gay man who also becomes a close friend and confidante. Reading this part of the book reminded me a little of The Devil Wears Prada. All the fashion shows and talk that went on, just gave it that deer-caught-in-headlights vibe. Paige tries to be as carefree and comfortable as possible, but anywhere she goes, trouble always follows.
Her failed attempts at dating and the consequences that some of these have, can’t help but make you feel sorry for her. She seems like a bright woman, but her decisions where men are concerned are not the best. She’s always finding herself in awkward situations and at many points, extreme laughter is what transpires.
This book is full of comedy, friendship, some romance (cue the date mishaps), and definitely troubling situations. I enjoyed the mix of seriousness with that of lighthearted fun and adventure. There are some very hilarious moments; Paige trying out a sexual move from an articles she reads or the time when she ends up in an advanced Pilates class. Although at times these seem over the top, they will still have you fully enjoying the story. There are also times where Paige got annoying and I couldn’t believe her choices, but then she got into trouble and I liked her again ;-)
This story is entertaining although at times a bit farfetched. Definitely one to pick up if you’re in the mood for laughs.
This is the story of Paige Crawford a twenty-two year old girl from Canada that decides to start her life over in London.
“In London I could be Paige Crawford, (fill in awesome life here),not Paige Crawford, wanna be current events journalist, weird Jackie’s little sister and all around ordinary girl.”
She arrives in London and right from the start her life turns into one disastrous mistake after another. After accidentally tripping and almost falling while leaving a night club, a famous football player catches her fall and the paparazzi gets a picture of it. Paige ends up being front page news as “the home wrecker.”
“The article insinuated that I was some home wrecker that this Stuart guy had been fooling around with behind the back of his beautiful wife.”
After that one tragic fall Paige’s life is turned upside down and everything she does is captured in photos and is all over the papers and Internet. She went from a nobody to an overnight star. The story basically is about how Paige deals with her life as it is being looked at under the media microscope and how she has to basically grow up and start making better choices.
She makes lots of friends on her journey and she makes some serious mistakes along the way. The book is full of humor and Paige is a strong young woman that just made the mistakes most twenty-two year olds make once out and on their own.
The book started off pretty fast pace but about half way through it started to drag some. The humor was pretty funny but I would of liked to have seen some more emotions when her life was constantly being exposed to the public. I felt she brushed things off to easily. The book is open-ended and has you wondering where her life will take her next.
Check out the original @ Books & Swoons 3.5 stars out of 5 stars Paige Crawford is tired of playing it safe, so in an attempt to find a new and exciting life she makes a rash decision to move to London. With two suit cases full of stuff and no idea what she is doing she heads out to try and conquer London. There were several parts of this story in which I found myself laughing out loud. Paige is, as she describes herself, a redneck from Canada and doesn't have a lot of experience outside of the predictable world she is used to. Paige is a little naive and gets herself into all sorts of crazy predicaments.
The pacing of the books is fairly fast paced. The dialogue and supporting characters were really interesting and added diversity to the story. There was a scene in the beginning of the book at a club that involved a vodka bottle and a transvestite that left me thinking WTF. This is a story of Paige's quest for self discover, as she tries to find a place in this world where she fits in.
I was however a little disappointed in the lack of romance throughout the story. Other than that I thought that Paiges endless nights of champagne and botched up dates were entertaining. If you like The Devil Wears Prada and Bridget Jones Diary, than this is the book for you.
Paige Crawford latches onto adventure and lets it carry her from her home in Canada to a new life in London. But while she may have acquired a fresh start, she can't shed her clumsiness, and this time it lands her not sprawled on the pavement but splashed across the tabloids. Overnight she goes from invisible to chased by the paparazzi, getting a firsthand look at life in the limelight.
The Accidental Socialite is part comedy of errors, part life lesson. Paige is endearingly human, from tripping right into a famous athlete to a rather embarrassing incident during yoga, and she's just as lost in the unexpected fame as most of us would be. From the surprise of being front-page news to stumbling her way through soirees with the rich, famous, and spoiled, every scene is a new (and not always great) adventure.
But while the lesson may be that living in a fame fishbowl is no picnic, the story remains a light-hearted, fun read, with lots of laugh out loud and even a few cringe-worthy moments. And between the laughs, Paige learns who she is, what's important, and what doesn't matter so much after all. If you're looking for something fun and generally angst-free, pick it up. It's a cute read that will play out in your mind like one of those movies you hit up on girls night.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Paige Crawford is a twenty-two year old Canadian girl who decides to move to London on a whim and arrives on a cold Saturday in January. She has no plans, no job but she managed to find a place to stay before her arrival. The place is not stellar and her various room mates are not desirable as she fears at her times for her safety as well as the mattress she uses in a basement room.

Trying to stay away from tabloid headlines as she tries to juggle her new job at a magazine called Fashionista, she realize that maybe she was not cut for this lifestyle.
Going back to home in Canada, she realizes why she left in the first place as she returns to London refresh and ready for a new year. No matter what happens friends are forever and will help you survive whatever life throws at you.
I was given this book for an honest review and I read the book and I did enjoy the book. It was funny and was very interesting to read about someone that didn't know about another country when she moved there for work. It was something that I never would have thought at first I would like being that when I started to read it, it went really slow. It took till about half way through the book for me to finally get into the book and actually enjoy what the author was writing about. When you think about what Paige went through and what happened when she first got to London, it was funny because you would not find someone as clumsy as she was throughout the book. She got hurt more then what she was actually standing around. But when the Jason started to use her and the camera's were always around and found out what her last name was after the first night of her being at the club, you could already tell that something was going to come up. At least she did finally figure out stuff but it took her awhile to finally realize what was going on and what she needed to know. It was a good book and I will have to read the second book to figure out what happens. Very good writing but I think at the beginning it could have been done a little different so that way it didn't drag out and I would have gotten into it a little more and a little faster.
This book is very funny and I loved it. I love to laugh as much as I love to swoon, so I was in high heaven with this book. Paige and I share the clumsiness trait, but so far I've never had my life turned upside down the way hers was by it. The action started quickly and it never let up.
I liked Paige. She's vibrant and good natured. She's trying to deal with the mess she's found herself in. People are forming opinions about her character and all she's trying to do is stay on the straight and narrow while correcting everyone's misconceptions. I was hoping she'd find a good man while in London, but most of her dating adventures made me cringe! I had a hard time putting this book down just because I never knew what was going to happen next. Can I just say I love her co-workers? People like them make work fun.
I'm really hoping Stephanie Wahlstrom writes a sequel to this book. I would love to read more about Paige and her dating and non-dating adventures. If you're in the mood for laughs, this book is for you. I can't wait to see what Stephanie Wahlstrom has in store for us next!
