The Stationmaster
The Stationmaster examines the lives of the downtrodden, finding redemption in the strangest places. Extremely popular in Japan, this short story collection is about marginalized people: the stationmaster of an obsolete train station; petty criminals; a clothing salesman; a dying sex worker. According to Margaret Atwood’s introduction, Jiro Asada’s combination of “daily time in all its humble and often harsh detail with the hidden, haunted psyche—how people see themselves from the outside, contrasted with their knowledge of their own wounded inner selves—is a potent achievement.” Often a ghost or other supernatural element comes in to help right previous wrongs, allowing these characters to find some semblance of peace.
Jiro Asada’s The Stationmaster is among the most cherished works by this very well-known Japanese writer, and it’s a great pleasure to be able to introduce this version to English readers.
There are approximately 2.5 million copies of The Stationmaster in print in Japan, in a country of over 127 million. If translated into North American terms, this book would thus have sold over 6 million copies which would be unheard-of for a book of short stories. Short fiction, thanks to magazines and journals, but also to Japanese readers’ liking for this form, has recently had a more active life in Japan than in North America, but The Stationmaster is remarkable even in that context.

Some of them—like the stationmaster of the title story—belong to a world that is traveling very fast and leaving them behind; their accomplishments are the kind nobody important recognizes or values; they fill positions that will soon be obsolete; they’ve spent a lifetime of hard work that has led to very little. Inspired by Yukio Mishima, who tried to stage a coup d'état among Japan Self-Defense Forces then committed suicide after the coup was failed, Asada enlisted in the SDF after finishing his studies. He changed jobs many times while endeavoring to find writing opportunities, submitting his works to literary competitions.
In 1991, his novel Torarete tamaruka! (とられてたまるか!) started his literary career. After writing several picaresque novels, his novel Metro ni notte (地下鉄に乗って) was awarded the Eiji Yoshikawa Prize for New Writers and made into a 2006 film; a short story collection The Stationmaster and other stories (Poppoya (鉄道員)) was also awarded the Naoki Prize.

And this, perhaps, is the real clue to the popularity of this small but truly remarkable book."

In this collection of short stories, Jirō Asada writes of miracles. Not deity-induced marvels but 'miraculous consequences' as Asada calls them in his Instead of an Afterword; miracles of 'the kind that can be evinced by unrelenting effort or sincere anguish.' It is in this vein of miraculous consequences that Asada attributes his success as a writer saying, 'lacking in great dreams, I was unworthy of becoming a writer, but I was able to become one through sheer force of will.'
I'm grateful for that force of will because I feel, as Atwood states, this is a truly remarkable book. The stories of Asada's Stationmaster are an assemblage of styles and their coherency as a collection speaks volumes to the author's ability. As a majority, each story had a supernatural vein that played a unique role - one either folkloric or religious in nature and often a foil for character emotion and expression. Asada displays an intense scope of emotional nuance here and, while I was moved more by some stories than others, each offers a force and draw of its own.

Đọc truyện nào cũng buồn rười rượi.
Ấn tượng với sự bí ẩn của người chủ shop trong Trầm Hương; khóc lóc rầu rĩ ở Người đón tàu với câu chuyện của người nhân viên già dù con ruột qua đời nhưng vẫn phải ghi trong sổ nhật ký lịch trình rằng hôm nay không có gì đặc biệt; cảm động với tình cảm của anh chàng bán băng đĩa dành cho người vợ giấy tờ chưa từng gặp mặt đã qua đời trong Thư tình; sợ hãi với con quỷ thâm nhập và dần chiếm lấy căn biệt thự trong Ác quỷ; tiếc thương cho số phận rạp chiếu phim có cây anh đào trước cổng trong Thiệp mời từ rạp Orion; đồng cảm với người nhân viên xuất sắc bị điều đến một đất nước xa xôi mà vẫn đau đáu nhớ về người cha đã bỏ mình đi trong Tsunohazu; phẫn uất thay cho người vợ trong Lễ Vu Lan. Còn truyện cuối, Ông già Tuyết nghiệp dư, đọc xong không có cảm xúc gì hết.
Nhưng cũng phải khâm phục Nhã Nam với sự cẩu thả trong cuốn này, sai chính tả, lỗi đánh máy đầy rẫy thì không nói rồi, tệ hơn là còn thiếu hẳn một truyện ở trong mục lục sách.

Chaque âge a ses plaisirs, son esprit et ses mœurs.
Asada Jiro est un romancier japonais contemporain auteur de ces deux nouvelles. Le train nous transporte dans l'île d'Hokkaïdo au nord du Japon. Le conducteur bientôt à la retraite d'une ligne de train presque désaffectée est le héros de cette nouvelle faite d'introspection, de souvenirs, de désillusions, et d'entêtement. Cela laisse dans l'âme une tristesse mélancolique, pas désagréable. La seconde, qui nous emmène cette fois à Tokyo, est une affaire un peu sordide d'un homme crapuleux qui s'enrichit en se mariant avec des mortes. Mais si la conscience de cet homme est étouffée, il n'est pas imperméable aux sentiments. Des nouvelles courtes et assez intéressantes, sans être extraordinaires non plus. À noter: l'éditeur a eu l'heureuse idée de doter le livres de petites notes de civilisation à certains endroits qui permettent d'enrichir notablement l'intelligence du texte pour ceux qui ne sont pas familiers des usages de la société japonaise contemporaine.

許多日本暖心短篇故事結局就像童話故事一樣，彷彿從此就要幸福美滿，這本卻不太一樣。感覺作者若非經歷過一定的人生歷練，很難寫出如此真摯細膩的情感；沒有一定的年歲讀者，也難以真正體悟主角內心的沉浮，這本書讀來就像在冬季，有人遞上一包暖暖包，雖然不足以讓人完全擺脫寒冷，卻能感受到一股微微的暖流，從手心緩緩注入心底。

Tập hợp bảy truyện ngắn của Jirō Asada về cuộc sống của những con người Nhật. Bảy câu chuyện, bảy cuộc đời khác nhau, nhưng tựu trung lại đều là những giai đoạn khó khăn của cuộc sống. Sự nghiệp. Chồng vợ. Con cái. Ly thân. Tuổi già. Đẩy con người ta đến bờ vực của tuyệt vọng.
Cũng nhắc đến tuyệt vọng. Những năm tháng tôi tồn tại còn ít ỏi quá. Cảm xúc thì có nhiều, khó khăn, buồn tủi tôi cũng từng trải qua, nhưng tuyệt vọng thì tôi chưa bao giờ được nếm. Tôi muốn mình cũng từng kinh qua cảm giác ấy, để theo như bác Sơn, thấy được, "tuyệt vọng cũng đẹp như một bông hoa.". Hi vọng lúc đó, tôi đủ sức vượt qua cảm giác ấy và đủ vững trãi nhìn lại.
Xuyên suốt cuốn sách là một đám sương mờ ảo của những hình ảnh tâm linh. Là người cha đã khuất hiện về để cho người con câu trả lời rõ ràng về quá khứ. Là ông nội hiện về giúp cô cháu gái cương quyết chuyện vợ, chuyện chồng. Là nhiều hình ảnh mà khi nghĩ về, con người bỗng cảm thấy tràn ngập yêu thương tưởng như đã mất.
Có lẽ, càng thêm tuổi tác, người ta càng tin vào thế giới của tâm linh.

Chấm điểm cả một cuốn sách vì một truyện ngắn trong đó chạm được tới cảm xúc của mình chắc cũng không phải quá đáng nhỉ?

Ban đầu tôi nghĩ cũng chỉ là một câu chuyện bên lề nào đó như hầu hết các truyện ngắn khác. Nhưng không. Cang Bạch Lan. Với hai lá thư mà cô để lại cho Gorou, dù tôi không hiểu làm sao cô lại cảm thấy như vậy được, nhưng cảm giác từng câu từng chữ trong ấy là những lời cực kỳ thực lòng, chân thành. Cho nên tôi hiểu tại sao Gorou sau khi đọc thư lại trở nên như thế, đến tôi chỉ là người cầm sách đọc thôi mà đã...
Phải mất một lúc để bình tâm lại, tôi nghĩ mình mới có thể đọc tiếp được.

Một tập truyện ngắn đầy xúc động. Truyện nào cũng hay và ý nghĩa.
Thích nhất truyện “Tsunohazu”. Nhân vật “đưa cánh tay lên ngang mày và bật khóc” mình cũng bật khóc theo.
Điểm trừ duy nhất là khúc cuối của hai truyện “Ác quỷ” và “Lễ Vu Lan”. “Yếu tố lạ” (tạm gọi thế tránh làm lộ nội dung) làm giảm đi ít nhiều sự tinh tế của truyện. Nhưng chỉ là một dấu trừ rất nhẹ, rất mờ thôi nhé.

This is one of the real benefits of NetGalley and publishers promoting books in this medium. The Stationmaster is the first story of a collection of eight short stories under that title. My ARC included a forward by Margaret Atwood as well as the authors own reflections plus a brief Q & A.
The author is Japanese and reads and writes only in his native tongue. Therefore I am so grateful to the work of a translator, Terry Gallagher and Sayuri Kingsbury who have recreated these tales so fluidly into English.
Apparently within Japan short stories are a big thing and Jiro Asada is a recognised author of them as well as longer novels. In the shorter version who need to be a wordsmith and have an eye for detail. He also confesses to trialling different idea and perspectives, third person to narrative.
The delight for me is the opening of doors and windows into a whole new world where you trust the guide/writer on those journeys.
To glimpse another culture, see both similarities and fundamental differences, enjoy rich tea fields, snowscapes and cherry blossom while encountering family honour, tradition and religious ceremony is a delight and gives reading vision, smells and a fear of the Unknown.
Most of the characters are down on their luck, financially challenged, grafters with troubles and personal loss. There is a small turning point in each story, a vision, a new conviction or a comfort that all was well. This miracles come with an inner revelation or ghostlike manifestation that challenges and transforms lives or eases them to pass over and rejoin their ancestors.
Beautifully told; real and personal these stories transcend their time and culture and show a worthwhile belief in humanity.

Những nỗi đau trong tập 8 truyện ngắn 'Người đón tàu' đã ngân lên một giai điệu lạnh lẽo đau đớn và huyền ảo của làn sương ngày đông. Bản tiếng Việt của Nhã Nam đã sắp xếp lại thứ tự truyện ngắn và phần mục lục thì đã thiếu truyện 'Tsunohazu' từ trang 235. Một cảm xúc vừa trống rỗng vừa nhẹ nhõm khó tả sau khi đọc xong tập truyện ngắn này xảy ra với tớ, và không hiểu sao tớ nghĩ đây cũng là một cuốn sách hợp với lễ Giáng Sinh. Mong những linh hồn đã tìm gặp chúng ta cũng đều nhẹ nhõm như thế.
Thứ tự yêu thích: Thư Tình ← Người Đón Tàu ← Trầm Hương ← Thiệp mời từ rạp Orion ← Lễ Vu Lan ← Ác Quỷ ← Ông Già Tuyết Nghiệp Dư.
Lần này tớ chỉ viết thêm về 3 truyện tớ thích nhất ở dưới, những truyện còn lại không biết viết gì nhiều mặc dù cảm xúc đem tới vẫn có. Truyện cuối cùng thì đáng tiếc không để lại cho tớ nhiều ấn tượng.
【Thư Tình ラブ・レター】
Trái ngược với tiêu đề đầy ngọt ngào và tưởng như một câu chuyện thanh xuân vườn trường ấy, 'Thư tình' là một mẩu truyện kể về góc tối của xã hội, nơi con người ta phải chịu những bi kịch đau đớn để sống.
❝Em đã phải chịu đày đoạ thể xác để đổi lấy mớ tiền đó, phải đổi cả máu để có nó. Tất cả đều là đồ quỷ dữ, đều gặm nhấm em cho tới khi em trơ trọi thì mới tha. Đã là quỷ thì làm sao lại có thể tử tế được hả em..❞
Jiro viết về vấn đề kết hôn giả để bán hộ tịch, những người ngoại quốc sống chui lủi để kiếm tiền trên đất Nhật. Nên dù ốm đau bệnh tật thì vẫn phải cam chịu vì tiếc tiền khám bệnh, vì không có bảo hiểm y tế. Tại sao luật pháp lại có kẽ hở tới thế? Tại sao có đủ thứ luật như luật quản lý mại dâm, luật quản lý lao động bất hợp pháp, luật chống khống chế, bắt cóc,.. một thằng chỉ có bán băng khiêu dâm cho cái bọn truỵ lạc mà còn bị tống giam cả mười ngày trời. Vậy tại sao một người con gái ngoại quốc chết đau đớn trên đất này lại được mọi người dửng dưng như không có chuyện gì xảy ra? Đây là một lát cắt đầy bi kịch, tình yêu ngớ ngẩn đau đớn giữa hai con người đã đăng ký kết hôn mà chưa từng gặp mặt nhau tới một lần. Jiro đem tới một khía cạnh mới khiến tớ bất ngờ, và không biết rằng nếu viết truyện này dài hơn xíu thì nó sẽ nổi tiếng để phản ánh cái xã hội thối nát này tới như nào. Tớ thấy câu chuyện này thật đẹp, và tại sao cái bi luỵ của Cang Bạch Lan lại có gì đó thống khổ tới thế. Những câu chữ trên lá thư cô gửi cho người chồng trên giấy tờ của mình lại có gì đó thảm thương tới thế. Có phải họ đang cố gắng thoát khỏi thế giới này không. Liệu rằng Gorou có thấy nhẹ nhõm khi bản thân mình đã tìm được một lối thoát như vợ mình không..
【Người Đón Tàu 鉄道員】
Thấm đẫm sự rét buốt từ những bông tuyết trắng, bi kịch và nước mắt ẩn sau bóng vai của người đón tàu cần mẫn công việc. Đây là một câu chuyện lấy đi nước mắt của tớ, và vì rằng những nỗi đau đớn đổ lên người đón tàu ấy dẫu lớn và nhiều tới cỡ nào, thì ông cũng ghi vào sổ công việc rằng hôm nay không có gì khác lạ. Điều này làm tớ nhớ tới một văn bản đã được học trong sách giáo khoa Ngữ Văn lớp 7, 'Cuộc chia tay của những con búp bê' tác giả Khánh Hoài. Hai anh em ruột trong câu chuyện đó phải tách rời nhau vì bố mẹ li hôn, lòng họ thì bão bùng nhưng tại sao con người ngoài kia vẫn đi dạo như bình thường vậy? Hình bóng người con gái đã mất tạo nên một khung cảnh u ám lạnh lẽo mà lại ấm áp kỳ lạ. Jiro đã kể một cuộc hội ngộ vừa như để cứu rỗi những tồn đọng đau đớn trong trái tim người đàn ông cần mẫn công việc ấy, vừa khiến chúng ta nhận ra cái thế giới tàn bạo ngoài kia dữ dội đau đớn tới cỡ nào..
❝Bên dưới lớp áo choàng đồng phục sờn cũ, sâu thẳm trong lồng ngực ông là những ký ức đã đông cứng, lắng đọng cùng với mùi dầu mỡ, mùi khói tàu hơi nước thấm vào da thịt, cùng với những vết sẹo bỏng lửa than trên đôi bàn tay gân guốc của ông.
Nỗi lòng của ông vơi nhẹ hẳn khi từng kỷ niệm thốt được ra thành lời. Thời hoàng kim với những đơn hàng đặc biệt. Vụ sập hầm lò kinh hoàng, người chết được moi lên đưa về nằm la liệt từng dãy trên sân ga. Rằng ở không gian của cô ấy thì trang sức tiền bạc là những thứ không cần thiết để tôn lên cái đẹp, sự quyến rũ bí ẩn của cô. Đây là một truyện ngắn khiến tớ cảm thấy Jiro viết về chuyện kinh doanh mở của hàng, lỗ lãi rồi dồn nén các chủ cửa hàng tới đường cùng tới mức họ tự sát để trốn nợ, cái xã hội lợi dụng lẫn nhau thời hiện đại một cách rất truyền thống. Có lẽ do nét bí ẩn trầm lặng như lắng đọng không gian thời gian giữa cái nhịp sống nhanh nhảu vội vàng của xã hội hiện tại, người phụ nữ toát lên vẻ truyền thống giữa những bộ trang phục công sở hiện đại, đã tạo nên một 'Trầm hương' có nét gì đau đớn, bế tắc, thơ thẩn tới thế.

Trái ngược với tiêu đề đầy ngọt ngào và tưởng như một câu chuyện thanh xuân vườn trường ấy, 'Thư tình' là một mẩu truyện kể về góc tối của xã hội, nơi con người ta phải chịu những bi kịch đau đớn để sống.
❝Em đã phải chịu đày đoạ thể xác để đổi lấy mớ tiền đó, phải đổi cả máu để có nó. Tất cả đều là đồ quỷ dữ, đều gặm nhấm em cho tới khi em trơ trọi thì mới tha. Đã là quỷ thì làm sao lại có thể tử tế được hả em..❞
Jiro viết về vấn đề kết hôn giả để bán hộ tịch, những người ngoại quốc sống chui lủi để kiếm tiền trên đất Nhật. Nên dù ốm đau bệnh tật thì vẫn phải cam chịu vì tiếc tiền khám bệnh, vì không có bảo hiểm y tế. Tại sao luật pháp lại có kẽ hở tới thế? Tại sao có đủ thứ luật như luật quản lý mại dâm, luật quản lý lao động bất hợp pháp, luật chống khống chế, bắt cóc,.. một thằng chỉ có bán băng khiêu dâm cho cái bọn truỵ lạc mà còn bị tống giam cả mười ngày trời. Vậy tại sao một người con gái ngoại quốc chết đau đớn trên đất này lại được mọi người dửng dưng như không có chuyện gì xảy ra? Đây là một lát cắt đầy bi kịch, tình yêu ngớ ngẩn đau đớn giữa hai con người đã đăng ký kết hôn mà chưa từng gặp mặt nhau tới một lần. Jiro đem tới một khía cạnh mới khiến tớ bất ngờ, và không biết rằng nếu viết truyện này dài hơn xíu thì nó sẽ nổi tiếng để phản ánh cái xã hội thối nát này tới như nào. Tớ thấy câu chuyện này thật đẹp, và tại sao cái bi luỵ của Cang Bạch Lan lại có gì đó thống khổ tới thế. Những câu chữ trên lá thư cô gửi cho người chồng trên giấy tờ của mình lại có gì đó thảm thương tới thế. Có phải họ đang cố gắng thoát khỏi thế giới này không. Liệu rằng Gorou có thấy nhẹ nhõm khi bản thân mình đã tìm được một lối thoát như vợ mình không..
【Người Đón Tàu 鉄道員】
Thấm đẫm sự rét buốt từ những bông tuyết trắng, bi kịch và nước mắt ẩn sau bóng vai của người đón tàu cần mẫn công việc. Đây là một câu chuyện lấy đi nước mắt của tớ, và vì rằng những nỗi đau đớn đổ lên người đón tàu ấy dẫu lớn và nhiều tới cỡ nào, thì ông cũng ghi vào sổ công việc rằng hôm nay không có gì khác lạ. Điều này làm tớ nhớ tới một văn bản đã được học trong sách giáo khoa Ngữ Văn lớp 7, 'Cuộc chia tay của những con búp bê' tác giả Khánh Hoài. Hai anh em ruột trong câu chuyện đó phải tách rời nhau vì bố mẹ li hôn, lòng họ thì bão bùng nhưng tại sao con người ngoài kia vẫn đi dạo như bình thường vậy? Hình bóng người con gái đã mất tạo nên một khung cảnh u ám lạnh lẽo mà lại ấm áp kỳ lạ. Jiro đã kể một cuộc hội ngộ vừa như để cứu rỗi những tồn đọng đau đớn trong trái tim người đàn ông cần mẫn công việc ấy, vừa khiến chúng ta nhận ra cái thế giới tàn bạo ngoài kia dữ dội đau đớn tới cỡ nào..

เห็นด้วยว่า เป็นชุดรวมเรื่องสั้นที่พูดถึงการจากลา การคลายปมในชีวิต และโหยหาอดีตในแง่มุมคล้ายคลึงกัน แต่เมื่ออยู่ท่ามกลางการวางพล็อตที่หลากหลาย คนอ่านเลยรู้สึกเพลินเพลินไปโดยไม่เบื่อหน่ายไปเสียก่อน
เรื่องสั้นอย่าง จดหมายรัก, ซาตาน, ทสึโนะฮาซุ, โอบ้ง และซานต้า แม้เรื่องราวจะเกิดในแวดวงที่ต่างกัน แต่ทุกเรื่องเชื่อมโยงด้วยความเหงา ว่างเปล่า คิดถึงวันวาน หากก็ต่างยอมรับในปัจจุบัน

In her introduction to this collection of 8 short stories (which is hugely popular in Japan), Margaret Atwood explains that each of these stories focuses on characters who are 'ordinary' or even lowly, and who experience a miracle of sorts (which sometimes appears in the form of ghosts). This collection was originally published in 1997 but this English translation is only now available.
Each of the stories are a little different from the other - "Love Letter" is unexpectedly touching and sad, "Devil" was like an episode of The Twilight Zone (loved it!), "Kyara" was mysterious, and "The Stationmaster" was a beautiful look at a life well lived, a life that was already obsolete before it was over. All the stories offered something different - each had a quietness to it, but drew me in easily. I don't normally read short stories but these were lovely and resonated.
Asada (an incredibly prolific author - 70 books in 14 years!) mentions at the end that he is not religious but does believe in miracles; his was becoming a published author.

My short story collection adventure continued this week with a venture to Japan via The Stationmaster. Coming with a glowing introduction from Margaret Atwood, this is an anthology which was awarded the Naoki Prize and sold 2.5 million copies in Japan which given population size is like an equivalent American book selling 6 million. This doesn’t really happen for short fiction, although to be fair I think the form is more popular in Japan than it is in the Western world. The point is that The Stationmaster received a great deal of success and so I was intrigued to find out more.
In the ‘Instead of an Afterword’, Asada explains that the over-arching theme to the collection is how lives can be touched by miracles. The titular story is perhaps the most affecting, featuring Otomatsu, an aging stationmaster on the point of retirement, patiently working his route even as it too heads towards closure. Gone are the glory days when the Kiha 12 was bright and shining new train, transporting coal to the big cities – now all it’s for is school runs. Widowed and with a baby daughter who died decades before, there is little of light in Otomatsu’s life. My throat felt tight when I read of how Otomatsu’s wife shrieked at him when she was bringing back the body of their child by train and he performed his usual signalling duties, aware of their child’s passing – he is the stationmaster and what he will be now without that role appears to frighten him, so the spark of happiness that Asada brings him feels like a true act of kindness.
Few of the other stories carried that same almost-magical impact but each had a poignancy of their own. My own particular favourite was “In Tsunohazu”, where Kyoichi Nukui, a middle-aged man going through a career crisis, attempts to understand why his father abandoned him decades before. He attempts to translate this act of callousness into a form of love of its own – it was heartbreaking to read Asada explain that this story was inspired by his own life. The child Nukui’s scrabbling attempts to extract from his father a promise to return are undramatic and yet Asada still makes them harrowing. Again, Asada allows for a sense of closure – something one suspects he was never able to grant to himself.
Asada is not afraid to summon up the supernatural in his fiction – in “The Festival of Lanterns”, a family ghost steps forward to resolve the situation, despite the apparent realism of the stories and the ordinary characters, there is little clear demarcation between the living and the dead. The latter story was particularly affecting, with the orphan woman visiting her husband’s in-laws only to have them turn against her – Chieko’s loneliness and sense of being adrift without family is obvious so that when back-up arrives, the reader can truly sense her relief. The values, standards and superstitions within the stories of The Stationmaster were sometimes difficult to relate to – I know very little about Japanese culture, which was one of the reasons why I picked up this book in the first place. Nevertheless, the common feeling of disconnection which ran through the stories was something that I could identify with. In “Invitation to the Orion Cinema”, long-term separated couple Yoshie and Yuji visit the old cinema where their romance was originally kindled, each of them stubborn but tinged with regret – a happy ending seems impossible and yet, and yet … These were everyday circumstances, sprinkled with just a tinge of the fairy-tale.
Asada’s stories lacked the same subtlety of Pearlman, but yet each chapter was complete in and of itself. I am not sure that I would pick up the collection again but yet I found each story individually captivating – a really refreshing sojourn on my short story search weaving the miraculous into mankind’s daily struggle.

It might not be a style the Western World is used to, but having read a few Japanese to English translations of different authors when I lived in Okinawa, I easily related. The Stationmaster is a beautiful story. Having lived in Okinawa, there is a pride Japanese have in their work and their lives. They put their heart and soul into everything they do and certainly Otomatsu is grieving for his life as a stationmaster. With the loss of a wife and child, the loss of joy his job brought him the reader awaits beauty to arrive in his life again, seemingly coming to an end. Asada's stories all contain a sprinkle of the magical but nothing fantastical. There is a difference in culture that is evident in Japanese stories, sometimes the Western World misses out on the details that give the stories heart.
The Festival of Lanterns is also a story in this collection that I really enjoyed. Chieko is raised by her paternal grandparents when both her mother and father decide to basically abandon her for 'new lives with different partners and children'- fresh family so to speak. When her grandparents pass away, maybe her grandfather isn't as 'gone' as she thought. The Obon or Bon Festival is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one's ancestor. We knew Americans with Japanese spouses that weren't even allowed to attend them, going from house to house, visiting and cleaning graves, reuniting with family- it's a beautiful tradition. We would see paper lanterns on the water and floating in the sky, in this story Chieko is unfamiliar with the tradition and her grandfather crosses great lengths to come to her rescue so to speak, from her husband's family. Family is vital in Japan and in marriages. I think this is my favorite story next to The Stationmaster.
They are sad with small miracles, and it's a lovely collection. Different from American short stories and yet just as enjoyable. Because the supernatural bend isn't outrageous it makes the stories more grounded. Lovely

I don’t often read short stories, but the ones in this collection are truly excellent. Jiro Asado is one of Japan’s most popular writers and this volume has been a bestseller – very much, I imagine, largely on the strength of the first story out of the eight, The Stationmaster, which has even had a film made from it – the sort of film you need a big box of tissues for if the trailer is anything to go by…..Be that as it may, it’s a wonderfully simple story, with a touch of magic realism, about a stationmaster at an isolated station who has always put duty first - and it’s very sad. All the stories are about lonely or marginalised people, ordinary people, and all of them are tender, warm-hearted and gentle. Highly recommended.

J’avais lu il y a quelques années l’adaptation en manga des deux nouvelles qui composent ce livre, Le cheminot et Love letter. J’ai donc redécouvert ces deux histoires poignantes avec plaisir. L’émotion ressentie à la lecture du manga était encore au rendez-vous. L’écriture est sobre, simple, les nouvelles courtes, mais très émouvantes et pleines de pudeur. Un auteur à lire que je ne manquerai pas de suivre.

La première nouvelle est marquante par l’image de ce vieux cheminot dans une gare enneigée. La seconde, noire des sanglots d’un homme pathétique pleurant l’urne funéraire d’une femme qu’il n’a pas connu. Dans les deux cas, Asada Jirô écrit le deuil après la mort, l’implacable solitude et les douloureux regrets des hommes qui plus jamais ne retrouveront le temps perdu. Le style est simple, le tout cruellement poétique.

Bonne découverte de cet auteur japonais. La première nouvelle m’a fait beaucoup pensé au Signal Man de Dickens, qui se parle également d’un employé dans une station de gare et qui décrit aussi le côté mystérieux voire mystique de ce lieu. Le style est plaisant, l’humour est présent, mais cela reste touchant.

ชอบการบรรยายสถานที่ บรรยากาศ การเดินเรื่อง ทุกอย่างเห็นภาพตามไปด้วยหมดเลย ส่วนใหญ่เป็นเรื่องของความสัมพันธ์ โดยเฉพาะในครอบครัว เรื่องราวแต่ละเรื่องอ่านจบไปแล้วก็ยังทำให้เรานึกคิดต่อไปอีก รวมๆ แล้วเรียกได้ว่า ถูกจริตมาก

Pripovetke u kolekciji Đira Asade fokusiraju se s jedne strane na dostizanje katarze, iskupljenja njegovih grešnih likova (delom izgrađenih po uzoru na osobe koje je poznavao, delom po sopstvenom karakteru - mutna prošlost, umešanost u kriminalne radnje, kocka…), a s druge strane na nostalgiju i prolaznost, tako što kontrastira vremena i prilike (kroz zatvaranje železničke stanice, starog bioskopa, rušenje starih naselja nužno se menja izgled jednog mesta; zapaža menjanje običaja, emancipaciju društva, posledice ličnih izbora…). I po piščevom ličnom isticanju predstavljaju „čuda koja se svakome mogu desiti”, postignuta ličnim naporom i trudom, pre nego posredstvom više sile.
Sadrži osam pripovedaka od kojih je prva čuvena pripovetka „Šef zelezničke stanice” (Poppoya - po kojoj je i snimljen poznati film iz 1999.)
Ova magično-realistična i nostalgična pripovetka odvija se u snežnom planinskom pejzažu Hokaida. U noći pred odlazak u penziju stari šef železničke stanice sreće svoju kćerku, preminulu još kao beba, u tri različita životna doba. Tokom ovih susreta razmišlja o balansu porodičnog života i poslovne dužnosti, uviđajući koliko je u životu propustio radeći na ovoj stanici koja se uskoro zatvara.
Druga pripovetka „Ljubavno pismo" fokusira se na osećaj neispunjenosti i usamljenosti. Sredovečni kriminalac, dok se vozom vraća s identifikacije leša žene kojoj je pomogao da uđe u Japan kroz lažni brak, čita njena pisma puna zahvalnosti. U tom trenutku, iako je nikada nije upoznao, biva duboko potresen i shvata koliko mu nedostaju iskreni odnos, običan život, prisnost i pažnja.
Pripovetka „Đavo” predstavlja pokušaj dečaka da rezonuje krah njegove imućne porodice zamenjujući njihove ljudske nedostatke (neverstvo, alkoholizam, nemar, neslogu) za đavolju rabotu.
Pripovetka „Tsunohazu” prati sredovečnog čoveka na zalasku karijere koji se osvrće na njegov dotadašnji život. Shvata da je obeležen traumom iz detinjstva kada ga je napustio otac, i to po smrti majke, te da se iz tog razloga nije usudio da se ostvari kao otac i svojoj supruzi naneo veliku bol.
U pripoveci „Kjara" prodavac u modnoj industriji uviđa svoju nekorektnost prema buticima kojima preprodaje robu svog velikog lanca nakon što sa jednom prodavačicom razvije bliži odnos.
Još jedna magično-realistična pripovetka adekvatnog naslova, „Obon”, je emotivna pripovest o položaju žene u ruralnom patrijahalnom društvu, a ujedno i dirljiv omaž precima (jedna od najjačih u kolekciji).
Pripovetka „Božić Bata u pokušaju” govori o recidivisti koji na Božić, upravo izazašavši iz zatvora i s ograničenim sredstvima, odlučuje da učini dobro delo za porodicu svog kolege robijaša.
Pripovetka „Bioskop Orion” pretstavlja nostalgično putovanje Kjotom s jednim od poslednjih bioskopa produkcije Nikkatsu u središu i prati par na ivici razvoda koji kroz sećanja pokušava da oživi staru iskru.

October 8, 2020The Stationmaster by Jiro Asada is a collection of short stories with a common theme of touching miracles. Asada is a former enlisted man in the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and now a prolific writer with some seventy novels printed over seventeen years. In the introduction, Margaret Atwood explains that this book sold 2.5 million copies in Japan, a nation of 127 million people. Put into perspective that would equate to 6 million copies in America. That is completely unheard of for a collection of short stories.
I admit it. I am a sucker for a train story and that is the reason I chose this book. I was pulled in from the start -- a soon to be retiring stationmaster, on a very quiet route, running old trains. Otomatsu is a man who remembers the old days when the Kiha 12 was a new and shining train. Now it is old and is limited to runs for school children. Otomatsu remembers when the long coal trains ran his route; they are all gone now. He still wears his old uniform (instead of the new style) and executes his duties with the precision of a Marine. Like a Marine, he holds a similar motto, "Once a railroad man, always a railroad man." For Otomatsu, much of what his life was has disappeared. The railroad route will be retired. His wife has died a few years before. His daughter died as a young child. Asada writes to bring a miracle or moment of happiness to a man whose world has and is closing in on him.
The other stories were good and all a bit different. None of them took me in as The Stationmaster did. "Love Letter" was moving in a completely different manner and quite unexpected. "The Devil" was a bit eerie like a Hitchcock short or Night Gallery episode. The other stories reminded me of a Hallmark story or movie. Things worked out too nicely and too perfectly. Perhaps this style of writing is popular in Japan. Asada is known for his picaresque novels which gained my interest, however, that style is lacking here.
I have a rather mixed review of this collection. It did hold my interest, but it is not my typical read. I was pulled in with a train story and stayed for the picaresque. I wanted more of that nostalgia of growing old and seeing the what made my youth so important slowly disappear... like steel mills, handwriting letters, drive-in theaters, radio.... I should have looked at the other stories before I jumped into this book. The writing is excellent. The stories have a nice twist and some originality before the “Hallmark” moment. Recommended for readers who like those "just so" stories.

Nội dung chính của quyển truyện về những người sống dưới đáy xã hội như là gái đxxm, tội phạm, buôn lậu video, tiếp thị sản phẩm, mồ côi, ....
Mình nghĩ sách dành cho những bạn 13+ thôi nhé, vì nó có những chi tiết không phù hợp cho lứa tuổi bé hơn
Truyện kể về phận người trớ trêu, buồn tủi của những người nghèo hoặc cô đơn trong thế giới, có thiện có ác nhưng tác giả đã khơi gợi nên sự nhân hậu đến kì lạ của những con người phạm tội, đến nỗi ta phải đồng cảm với họ. Truyện có 1 số chi tiết tâm linh nhưng không mang hơi hướng tôn giáo nên khá nhẹ nhàng sâu sắc. Không khí trong truyện dịu dàng nhẹ nhàng tình cảm dù có 1 số đoạn man mác buồn hoặc thậm chí buồn nát lòng thì cái kết đến cho từng mẩu truyện ngắn vẫn rất nhẹ nhàng, mở ra nhiều vương vấn trong lòng người đọc. Tác giả kết truyện khá hay, mỗi truyện lại kết theo 1 cách khác nhưng vẫn có chung 1 điểm là cực sâu sắc và lắng đọng
Quyển này đáng đọc nhé!!

"Et si c'était l'ange de la mort qui était venu le chercher ?"
Loin de m’avoir émue, les deux nouvelles de ce recueil m’ont laissée complètement indifférente. Il y a pourtant des aspects intéressants, notamment dans la première histoire empreinte de nostalgie où l’auteur dépeint avec justesse la société japonaise des années 90. Mais ses personnages n’attirent pas la compassion ; bien au contraire, je n’ai éprouvé que de l’aversion à leur égard. Tous deux semblent uniquement chercher à soulager leur conscience, Sato en voyant le fantôme de sa fille lui pardonner juste avant d’affronter sa propre mort, Goro en lisant la "lettre d’amour" de l’immigrante qu’il a épousée et rêvant de la vie qu’il aurait pu avoir avec elle dans d’autres circonstances (mais vraiment, quel hypocrite (!!!), il se fichait bien de son sort avant de voir qu’elle était belle sur une photo). En bref, le regard masculin se fait fortement ressentir dans cet écrit, et ce n’est pas un compliment. Jirō Asada ne m’a pas convaincue.

Mình sẵn sàng đánh giá 5 sao khi chỉ mới đọc 3 truyện ngắn đầu tiên. Cảm xúc sau khi đọc hết cả quyển là phê, lâu lắm rồi mới có quyển thoả mãn mình đến vậy. Gần như trong mỗi truyện đều có yếu tố tâm linh; truyện ngắn Trầm Hương thì có cô chủ shop xinh đẹp, kì lạ và bí hiểm; Người đón tàu cảm động, thân thương với hình ảnh em gái về thăm cha mình hay người ông đã mất về trong đêm cầu siêu vì còn nuối tiếc chưa thể mang lại cuộc sống bình yên cho cháu gái mình,... Bối cảnh, cốt truyện trải dài ở nhiều ngành nghề, vừa mới mẻ lại gần gũi, chắc có lẽ tác giả sáng tác quyển này ở độ tuổi đã xế chiều nên câu văn rất mùi mẫn, mang lại cho mình đủ cung bậc cảm xúc. Thật may mắn vì đã được đọc tác phẩm Người đón tàu của Jiro Asada.

Thích kiểu buồn man mác trong đây quá. Kiểu buồn khách quan í, buồn từ thực tế cuộc sống, từ những mối quan hệ giữa người với người, rất khác so với kiểu buồn chủ quan (buồn vì cô đơn, không kết nối được với thế giới xung quanh) như nhiều truyện khác. Cái sự buồn khách quan này khiến mình có cảm giác các nhân vật đang thực sự sống và vẫn giữ hy vọng về tương lai tươi sáng, không phải chỉ đang vật vờ tồn tại và có thể biến mất bất cứ lúc nào.
Thích kiểu buồn man mác trong đây quá. Kiểu buồn khách quan í, buồn từ thực tế cuộc sống, từ những mối quan hệ giữa người với người, rất khác so với kiểu buồn chủ quan (buồn vì cô đơn, không kết nối được với thế giới xung quanh) như nhiều truyện khác. โดยส่วนตัวแล้วชอบเรื่อง'จดหมายรัก' มากที่สุด
ไม่น่าเชื่อว่าจดหมายที่ภาษาญี่ปุ่นไม่แข็งแรงจากคนที่ตายไปแล้วเพียงสองฉบับ
จะทำให้คนไม่เคยพบกัน
มีเพียงฐานะสามี-ภรรยา จากทะเบียนสมรสที่เชื่อมต่อกันนั้น
จะทำให้อีกฝ่ายที่ยังอยู่รู้สึกสูญเสียราวกับรู้จักกันมานาน
ส่วนเรื่องอื่นๆล้วนเล่าถึงความตาย และ ผู้ที่จากไป เช่นกันในแง่มุมที่หลากหลาย
เช่น ให้ตัวเอกคลายปมในอดีตที่เจ็บปวดใน 'ทสึโนะฮาซุ' และ 'เทศกาลโอบอง'
เรื่องเด่นอย่าง 'คนรถไฟ' ก็สั้นๆแต่งดงามกินใจ
อ่านเรื่อยก็เพลินดีในฐานะเรื่องสั้น
ได้อารมณ์ในระดับกลางๆดี

Những câu chuyện ngắn cứ đan xen lẫn nhau với vẻ man mác buồn. Sự cô đơn trải dài qua các câu chuyện về sự thiếu thốn về tình cảm gia đình, sự hối hận về quá khứ, sự mất mát cứ liên tục diễn ra trong người đón tàu. Để rồi sau mỗi chuyện ngắn chúng ta lại nhớ về gia đình của chính mình, một chút đồng cảm, một chút cảm động, để biết thương yêu nhiều hơn.

The stories started well, I liked The Stationmaster and I loved the Love Letter, it even brought a tear to my eye. Unfortunately, the rest of the stories were nothing special. All of them deal with some kind of loss which makes them a little depressive and also quite similar.

One of the best book to read in this cold winter. Look like I am in love with the book when I see the Vietnamese cover and the picture of the movie based on the second chapter. Every chapter is a unique mystic story which is warm and makes us think and think about the value of life.
