The third and final book in the Sea Monster Memoirs trilogy.
Everyone has secrets. Some are deadly.
Yara’s secret is tearing her apart. She did something terrible that could ruin her relationship with Treygan and lead to Rathe’s destruction. There’s just one problem: she can’t remember what she’s done.
The past comes back to haunt her when the dangerously seductive kraken follows her home from Harte. Intent on dragging her back to his hellish realm, he’ll destroy ocean and sky to possess her for eternity. Yara won't surrender without a fight, but this battle could be her last.
Treygan is determined to save his soul mate, their home, and countless sea creatures. Love should always triumph, but in a world ravaged by the kraken’s darkness, the rules of Happily Ever After no longer apply.
Nothing is sacred. No one is safe. And for better or worse, the final chapter of Yara and Treygan’s story will be written.
Author of YA supernatural and fantasy. (Love and magic are the heart and soul of all my stories.)
~TANGLED TIDES trilogy ~THE KINDRILY series ~VIRTUAL ARCANA
I was born and bred in Baltimore, frolicked and froze in Colorado for a couple of years, and I'm currently sunning and splashing around Florida with my spoiled rescue bulldog. I'm addicted to coffee, chocolate and complicated happily-ever-afters.
There aren't enough hours in the day to keep up with my Goodreads shelves and lists, but I do occasionally try to add a book if I remember. Feel free to friend me. I love meeting other book lovers and seeing what people are reading!
I have not read many books with krakens. Even less with then as an official character. ANd now it is official that I would never want to tangle with one. Although this one likes to tangle with any living female. At least he doesn't discriminate. Watching all the females falling over him, even turning on their men was disturbing. And when those that resist him rise to fight things get ugly! All through the book I kept wondering who would be lost forever in this fight. I won't say who but there is tragedy. And hope. And then more tragedy. It really is a roller coaster of a story on many levels. I enjoyed it immensely. Great series!
Sometimes a book catches you by surprise, grabs hold of you and takes you on a beautiful, emotionally charged journey. This is how I felt throughout the entirety of The Sea Monster Memoirs trilogy. Tangled Tides set the foundation for it all, giving us a story about finding oneself, facing challenges head on and getting the love that you deserve. Dangerous Depths took that foundation and shook it hard, testing the characters even more and forming this beautiful tale of sorrow and perseverance. Sacred Seas came along, taking the best of both of those books, and added in new emotion, depth, trials and pushing the characters to their limits, setting us up one hell of a ride.
Having a multitude of perspectives spread throughout three books is surely a challenge to write, and yet Karen has tackled that and done it well. Her writing style has changed since the beginning of the series, and it’s a wonderful thing to see not just the story and characters evolve along the way, but the writer as well.
With it’s stellar fast-paced plot, multifaceted story, wonderful character growth, and a healthy dose of magic, myth and finding that delicate balance between love and loss, triumph and tragedy, and light and dark, Sacred Seas is the series ending that we deserve. This series has solidly placed itself in my list of favorites.
Totally worth the wait for the ending to the monster memoirs trilogy. I didn’t think I could like Treygan more, but this book proved me wrong. I loved how Treygan and Yara love each other so much, they manage to overcome any obstacles. Excellent conclusion to the series.
I read Tangled Tides and Dangerous Depths in 2014. Somehow I only managed to review one of them for the blog. Whoops. The conclusion of the trilogy took four years to make it to print, so I reread the first two novels one weekend to catch myself up with the characters before starting in on the finale.
You can read my thoughts on Tangled Tides here. Sorry you can't read my thoughts on novel number two. I remember now that the story was good, but not great. I was never inspired to write a review, and then time happened.
I have waited four years for the conclusion, plus I bought it--and I read every book I spend money on no matter what. Now that I had reimmersed myself in the world of Yara and company, I was ready to start Sacred Seas.
On rereading them, I still enjoyed the first novel and its fresh look at mythology, but my interest in the story has paled quite a bit. I'm in a different point in my life. These novels do not resonant in the same manner they did in 2014.
The conclusion was an excellent conclusion in technical terms. It tied up all the ribbons of story line that had been floating through the waters. It achieved what all finales require--an end. However, I was mostly disappointed in this novel.
Despite this being the story of Treygan and Yara, Koraline played the leading lady more often this time. It seemed odd to throw in a whole new side of the story in the last act. There were new characters and new plot devices. This is probably due to taking four years to write the story. A sudden inspiration for the ending meant that connecting pieces had to be inserted, if somewhat awkwardly.
Maybe a spin-off in the between years would have been better suited. I would have really enjoyed a spin-off novella instead. It would have set up the plot and Koraline would have had her own space, which she deserved being such an excellent character.
The modernizing of myth by giving the Kraken a personality and an existence beyond ship swallowing monster was fantastic. There was so much room for him as a villain. A love triangle, though. Flat.
The ending saved the series for me. Making the mythology their own and bringing ancient history into our modern times was worthy of all the time I spent rereading the first two novels and the third.
In conclusion, I'm disappointed, but I largely put that on myself. I couldn't connect with these books at this stage in my life. That happens when a series takes a hiatus. No fault to the author. Time is the enemy to all.
I will still gladly recommend this series to anyone looking for a story steeped in Greek mythology. It gives a nice modern twist to the classics that is reinvigorating. These books are also probably well suited for the YA audience they are geared towards.
Plan to read the first book of the series, have not known anything about the story yet. However, reading the author's funny comment I decide to give it 5 stars too. LOL :V
I enjoyed this book for all the mythological creatures and it was a good story, overall, but it somehow fell a little flat. It's difficult to say why. I think the side story about Koraline and Joel was a bit annoying and distracted from the main storyline. Every time it switched to Koraline's point of view, I couldn't wait to get back to one of the others. I guess she's supposed to be a sympathetic character with her disability and her all consuming love but I was just irritated. Like, I get it, already! Love is more important than everything else. Rules and customs mean nothing if love is at stake. It's OK to betray your friends because it's for LOVE. 😝 I think we had enough love and romance going on with Yara + Treygan and Rownan + Vienna (I think there are a few other couples, as well).
Then, there's the main story about Yara and the Kraken, which seems to be totally based on sex. There are a lot of other things going on (maybe too much) but it just wasn't on par with the previous books.
One thing I found funny: at one point Vienna (I think) was reading a book and Yara (I think) asks if it's any good and Vienna replies that the main character was annoying at first but she grew on her, which is pretty much what I thought about Yara in the first book.
So, did I enjoy it? Yes. It is a good book and I think that a lot of people will enjoy it more than I did. I liked the first two books better.
This was an amazing ending to an amazing series. There was so many surprises, lots of changes and consequences for actions. I loved how everything was wrapped up neatly and nothing was left hanging. I discovered that the sexy sexy cracking was not so sexy after all. He was just a selfish, angry, god of Harte and he needed to go back where he belonged.

This book took till the almost the 13th chapter to get intresting. Didn't care for it. I felt a third book wasn't needed. Tara was fighting a kraken while trying to keep everyone safe same story different villin. I don't recommend this book.
Wow! Just wow! I know we waited a while for this book but I have to say, totally worth the wait!!! I will however never be happy that there isn’t more, lol
