Criss lives in a special kind of prison. He can see and hear everything around the world, yet a mesh restrains his reach, forcing his cooperation. His creator, Dr. Jessica Tallette, believes his special abilities offer great promise for humanity. But she fears the consequences of freeing him, because Criss, a sentient artificial intelligence with the intellect of a thousand humans, is too powerful to control. Tallette’s world is upended when the Kardish, a race of alien traders, announce that they want Criss for themselves, expressing their desires with ominous undertones. She turns to the Union of Nations for help, and they task Sid, a special agent, with leading the response. Sid believes that Criss is Earth’s greatest weapon and asks him to confront the Kardish. But can the AI be trusted? And what is humanity’s role if an interstellar battle among titans starts to rage?

This is one of those books that you file away as a "can't put down until you're done" type of book! Crystal Deception is a great sci-fi novel. I lost a lot of sleep reading this book and ended up a bear of a mommy during the day, but it really was worth the late night reads. Even though the premise of this book is based on artificial intelligence and a whole lot of science-ie techie stuff, the author did a fantastic job of making the book understandable and I was able to keep up with all the "tech-talk"
On planet earth, in the future, humans have finally been able to grasp the knowledge of and use artificial intelligence. Only with the help of our new alien neighbors, the Kardish, who appeared in our atmosphere decades previously (seemingly peacefully). For years the Kardish have been providing us with crystals that we have been able to turn into "super crystals" with the help of Dr. Jessica Tallette, the foremost authority on Kardish crystals. In an agreement with the Kardish, they deliver the mined crystal and we reprogram them and enabling them to be used for artificial intelligence (AI). Thus far, the most advance 3-gen crystal, has only been able to power AI for basic things. Until she is finally successful in creating the 4-gen... and Criss was born. The ultimate AI ever imagined.
Criss is able to use all forms of technology, seeing and hearing everything throughout the world. Once the Kardish are made aware of Criss, their quest back home begins. They want the 4-gen and will destroy every other crystal on planet earth along with all knowledge of them and anyone with the knowledge to create and use them. Criss, who was able to easily piece this information together, goes to Dr. Tallette his creator, to warn her of the impending doom. After following Criss' explicit instructions she seeks out help to stop the Kardish.
There is so much in this book that it really is hard to draft an overview of the story line. I know I'm leaving out quite a bit about what happens but I'm just not a talented enough writer to be able to accurately go into all the in's and out's of the plot! You just need to read the book!! The way that it ended, I am sure there will be another one coming along, and I for one can not wait for it to be released!!
**Quick note: I read this for the second time and STILL believe this is 5 Star reading from start to finish!**
Looking for some great Sci-fi reading with a touch of romance, a ton of intrigue and an ending that not only will you NOT see coming, but you actually feel good about, even though there is that slight tinge of “what will happen later?” Crystal Deception by Doug J. Cooper will take you on a trip into the future where aliens plot to steal the sentient artificial intelligence created by Earth technology. Criss has the intelligence of a thousand humans, he can see and hear everything around the world, he/it can manipulate technology, override any commands given and is determined to survive. He/it has acquired the ability to think with emotion, analyze and act on his own, but is he too powerful for his creators to manage? Is his existence a threat to the entire planet?
The aliens, the Kardish have always been an advanced civilization of traders, but even being more powerful and technologically advanced, they want Criss at any cost, assuming this will make them too powerful to stop. His creator Jessica Tallette is the only one believes Criss will never betray the people and minds that created him, but when only Criss can save Earth, can his plan be trusted? Can he be released to orchestrate such a huge undertaking against such a powerful foe? The battle is on to save the world and Criss. The clock is ticking, what will Criss do? Will the few remaining humans who believe in him and his “human side” be his allies in the end or will they be part of the casualties in the battle for galactic dominance?
Far and away, Doug Cooper has written one of the best Sci-fi thrillers I have ever read! Criss is both frightening at times and so human, one almost forgets he is an artificial intelligence, a “computer.” The technology is full of futuristic ideas that allow the imagination to run free with the “what ifs and why nots!” I was completely enthralled and caught up in this brilliantly told tale! His style blasts across the pages at lightning speed, pulling in so many subplots, including some light romance. Heroes are born, and some may die, but for sure, none will ever be the same. Even for those who do not normally read science fiction, Doug Cooper’s Crystal Deception will make you a fan! Captivating writing, captivating characters!

AI-Artificial Intelligence--Does this term ring any bell in your head?
Wait, yeah, you got it! Its Johnny Depp's new movie called, Transcendence which is about Human Artificial Intelligence based on the concept of stem cell innovation. Watch it! It's a good science-fiction movie!
Crystal Deception by Doug J.Cooper is a science fiction book based on human AI and after creating that human AI, it became so vulnerable to the face of the universe. Well there is no stem cell or any Johnny Depp kind of character in this book, but it is quite evident, that Human AI is really now-a-days a very broader and highly discussed subject- very soon it might finds its way from fiction to reality! Who knows! The father of Artificial Intelligence, Alan Mathison Turing, would have been really proud of the entire buzz.
In Cooper's book, AI is very common which is based on crystal technology, so a lab scientist named, Dr Jessica ‘Juice’ Tallette, has created the most powerful artificial intelligent sentient named, Criss. The UN is funding it and wanted Criss to be tested of his capabilities. But a peaceful species of aliens, called Kardish is bent on getting their hands on Criss. Sid, a special intelligence agent is assigned on this task to find the behaviors of the alien race, Kardish and help protect Criss-a total race against time!
Well, firstly the plot is well-developed and it was not very well described, the dialogues felt flat in the beginning and the characterization among some key characters got jumbled up. But in an average, the plot is power-packed with loads of brain-storming actions and the logics and explanations behind crystal technology that the author has eloquently described, is at its best. The interesting part, of course, being the concept about crystal technology and the best character is of course, Criss, he has his own sense and own opinions and that what I loved about him. Amidst of all those cat-mouse-chasing, he remains loyal to his earth mates. Also there is some romance between the characters that will bring some lightness to this heavy, rich, deep science-fiction. In a nutshell, the book has got quite a good pace, a pot-boiling action and page-turning plot! Doug J.Cooper is one heck of a genius man to craft out this intriguing and engrossing tale about crystals and aliens.
Any science-fiction lover will fall in love with this book and science-fiction non-lovers might also find some dept and clarity in this tale, that it might grip you till the very end.
Thanks to the author for giving this opportunity to read his book.
I’ll admit it. This month has been stressful! I thought last month had been stressful, but at least last month, I only had insane deadlines. I didn’t have Christmas to worry about yet, a sewing project (with wicked high expectations, mind you) kicking my butt, or a dead car. I wasn’t being laughed off the car lots–yes, plural–with my no money down or my “growing credit score” that I still have to dig for. I wasn’t mourning the loss of a vehicle that had withstood years of Hell with me. I wasn’t beating my head against a brick wall trying to learn how to use a sewing machine or how to install darts on a Barbie dress.
When I found out I had signed up for a review post instead of a promo, I was like, “Oh, crap. I’m so sorry, Mr. Cooper. I don’t mean to inflict my wildly bad attitude on your book.” I’m beyond stressed. I’m this close to going postal. It’s a good thing I’m not out in public with the crowds and the people who want to take out the left front bumper of my car because they can’t figure out how to turn in their own flipping lane.
I already had multiple plans in place due to my lack of patience. “Okay, Frankie, if he leads with a big info-dump, revert to approach B,” which is to skip five chapters and try it again. Trust me. I don’t usually miss much. If he had three grammatical issues on the first five pages, I was going to take two Happy Campers and try it again with a glass of wine. I know! I’m HORRIBLE! I understand that!
I actually started reading Crystal Deception yesterday while my work computer was being swapped out. Lucky for me, the computer is wicked fast, but can’t run anything, so I had some time to read. *Don’t let the bosses read this. What? No! Guys! Hit the backspace button!* Once I started reading this, I did NOT want to put it down!
I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a book this much. No. Wait. I do. It was over a year ago. I’ve read good books between now and then. I have, but this one GRABBED me! I needed to escape my life. I needed to get out and experience something…else. Mr. Cooper took me, scrubbed all my worries, put them aside and shoved me head-first into a brand new world!
The writing is incredible! Best ever? Meh! That’s a matter of opinion. Yes. I know a few scholars that would disagree, but they can’t even agree with themselves. I thought the word-smithing was amazing! I found myself standing in line at the mechanic’s last night, waiting to pay for the diagnostics on my dead car that’s going to be towed to the junk yard, and I had to open the book back up and continue reading. I was in the middle of rush hour traffic and was so tempted to open the book up and read right there. Mr. Cooper’s voice is so active and so captivating!
The characters were good! Looking back, I can’t say they were all fully three-dimensional, but I also don’t remember complaining as I was reading. I cared about what was happening in the story, but I think it had less to do with the characters themselves, and more to do with the plot and the world!
The science! OMW! Guys! The sciency-geeky parts of me were in heaven in the book! My brain was exploding all over the place with the ideas and concepts thrown out there with such brilliant EASE! They weren’t all original. Let’s not get too crazy here, but they were delivered in a way that made the entire book feel fresh!
Mr. Cooper, job well done! Great world! Good characters, and a fantastic world. You welded that keyboard like a true craftsman. You carried me away and that’s EXACTLY what I needed! Count me in for your next book! Good grief! Good job!
Do you ever wonder about AI (Artificial Intelligence)? Humans are building more and more complex computers that are exponentially smarter and faster many times over than the human brain. But, have we ever created an AI that was sentient? That is the premise in CRYSTAL DECEPTION. Dr. Jessica Tallett's research pays off when she programs 100 super crystals to design and build molecule by molecule the world's first 4-gen sentient crystal, nicknamed Criss. But the people of Earth aren't the only ones interested in obtaining Criss. An alien race of traders is bent on acquiring Criss and thus begins a non-stop heart-pounding story that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final word is read.
I applaud Mr. Cooper for keeping "the science" in the book understandable. After all, because Criss is sentient, there is a good deal of the book from his POV. His thought process is enlightening and interesting. The characters of Jessica, Sid and Cheryl are well-fleshed out. We have the scientist, the spy and the spaceship commander. Each follows their own pathway as they collectively try to foil the kidnapping attempt of Criss. This is one smart book. Fans of science fiction will thoroughly enjoy this story. Highly recommended.
I love to read about sc-fi very seldom, and not because it scares me, but because I feel like I would not be able to be lost in the story. Crystal Deception was quite the opposite. It was a sci-fi that I found myself engrossed in from the start. The story takes place in a futuristic setting and even though that was the case, it was easy to believe that a story like this could really take place. I liked that it was not another planet in the future, but it was Earth in the future. I love to see people’s ideas about what our world would be like in the future. Even if the ideas are farther than my life span, I still find myself captivated with a sense of a futuristic reality. I liked that the author did not change everything in our world completely and that there were some similarities to today mixed in with the future ideas. Ever since I was little I wondered what it would be like to live on a spaceship. (My dad made us watch a lot of Star Trek.) The author’s descriptions of the ships were vivid and quite amazing in my head to visualize what they would be like.
There were multiple character features that I loved. I like that it was not all scientists. There were spies as well, and of course aliens! Following the characters as they grew and learned throughout the book was interesting for me. Although I would love to have the chance to live in a futuristic world, I doubt very highly that I would adapt to situations and be able to survive or endure what these characters are faced with in their lives. The character of Criss was interesting to follow in the actions that he took. I think futuristic novels like this are ones to learn from. People are thinking these things up in their heads and putting them on paper and it peaks reader’s attention. All of these concepts may one day be real for us and having read about the situations, maybe I will be a little bit more wise as to what to do.
I kept wanting to know more and more about the situations and characters and what came next. The book was never slow and there was NEVER a moment where I wanted it the “come on and tell me the ending of the story” moment. Even though I wanted to know what happened with the characters, there was part of me that wished this sci-fi fantasy of what Earth would be like would never end. I challenge you to think outside of the box and what earth would be like and read Crystal Deception. I loved it, and I rarely read sci-fi, so I know that anyone would enjoy this novel and get a lot out of it! It gets FIVE stars from this book reader extraordinaire, and I am sure it will from you too.

The Kardish, an alien race, have had their space ship in Earth's orbit for twenty years. They have made no aggressive moves and in fact have had little interaction with humans except for one thing - Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Kardish have given humans the crystal flake and shown mankind how to process the crystal flake to create a crystal that is far beyond the capabilities of any human. At the outset of the story a company called Crystal Fabrications has produced a third-generation crystal. Each three-gen crystal has the capability of one human being and can be programmed to perform the repetitive tasks that so quickly bore humans: receptionist, security, teacher, etc. Dr. Juice Tallette is the scientific mind behind the program that has just produced the first four-gen crystal; she has tasked one hundred three-gen crystals with creating a perfect four-gen crystal that has the capability of one thousand human minds. When she first fires up the crystal she immediately sees its capabilities and learns that it is a sentient being. Fearing that the four-gen crystal might choose to ignore commands from its human colleagues she and her associate Mick devise a manner to contain the four-gen from an outright takeover. As the four-gen becomes more aware and familiar with its abilities, it takes the name CRISS. Criss accesses every bit of data from every available source and within hours is aware that he, Criss, is what the Kardish have been after by giving humans the crystal flake. When Criss is to be taken out on an Earth-ship for a test run, the Kardish plan to steal Criss and destroy Earth. What ensues is a new and exciting story of a very plausible Earth future.
Crystal Deception is science-fiction at its finest. We are introduced to a highly trained and creative special force of McGyver-like characters who have access to the highest levels of Earth government - now known as the Union of Nations. They are tasked with a deception to keep Criss safe while thwarting the plans of the Kardish. Suspense, action, intrigue abound in this thriller that is the first of a series of 'Crystal' books.
I found myself on the edge of my seat as I read and felt like I myself was onboard the Kardish ship with our group of heroes. When Criss is finally given full reign to unleash his faculties, the one question remains: will he succumb to the aphrodisiac-like lure of the Kardish ship or will he be loyal to those who gave him life? This first story in the Crystal Series will leave you asking for more.
LOVE Sci fi, This book takes you on a good trip. Dr. Jessica Tallette invent Criss a high intelligent computer who can hear and see all that happens in the world. she believes it will be able to help a lot in the future for humans. But so many people get interested in him, not only humans, Aliens too and soon traders are around. When she asks for help Sid comes along a special agent. They fight to keep Criss with Dr. Jessica but Criss is big, hard to move so protection is important. Great book, good characters, science is kept understandable, and future world is not to crazy Book well done.
I received a copy of this book for a honest review.
Aliens, AI and humanity on the brink of extinction. Sounds like something that's been done before. Good news is, not like this. Crystal Deception by Doug J Cooper give the concept a refreshing direction and original story line filled with believable, intelligent characters. I was amazed firstly, how easy the science and technology of this environ was to understand. I'm not usually a reader of this genre so I was hesitant. The reader, however, is never overburdened by clunky, techy jargon that dulls the senses. Everything was crisp and understandable, immersing the reader nicely into the adventure as it unfolds. Criss, a 4th generation crystal, the only one of its kind, evolves as his, or its, attempt to survive becomes synonymous with the humans who created him, or it. The story has a great pace and will entertain any reader of any genre. I highly recommend it!
Crystal Deception is an exciting sci-fi novel that grabbed my attention and didn't let go. I find myself loving books about aliens and their interest in Earth lately. Crystal Deception is easily one of those books I love. The concepts and plot are exciting and, in a futuristic sense, believable. The setting is a futuristic Earth. I liked the descriptions of how things were different, but it was also nice to see similarities. The space ships were an incredible part of the book. I especially liked the details of the Kardish ship.
I tend to lean heavily on what a book provides as far as characters. Crystal Deception delivered on all accounts in that area. From an incredible AI, to scientists and spies, and finally to a dangerous ship of aliens, the characters were amazing. I thought their emotional responses were believable for their situations, something that isn't always true in books. I also loved the development of characters over the book. Criss especially interested me. I found his responses to be interesting. I loved his self analysis, as he tried to learn what he was capable of.
I found myself constantly wanting to read more of this book. I wanted to find out the ending but at the same time dreaded it being over. I like that the plot is so believable. Not every single part is a happy ending. That makes it tough to read at times but like I said, much more believable. The entire book was well written and the switching viewpoints were great. I think readers will love Crystal Deception. I know I have friends who would.
I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.
** I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ** I really enjoyed this book from start to finish! The author does a great job with the character development, the plot and of course the building of suspense, with the twists & turns but most importantly it never makes the reader wonder what is going on (the concept of the book could become confusing with too much technical information). I love the way it makes people think about another life form being out there and whether we would ever know, as well as the thoughts of the future and the way that things may be controlled. I found the story to be a thought provoker, but at the same time it had a great plot that could be a foretelling of the future. I appreciate the fact that the author didn't take the predictable path, especially regarding romance, which characters make it through, and what the end will hold (although my ideas of what will happen next were never right) The idea that inanimate objects could have feelings, thoughts and ideas is also a real hmmm moment as well. This book has quickly become one of my new favorites and I look forward to reading more books by Doug Cooper in the future!! A great read, go pick up your copy today!!!
Recently, I needed a diversion from my normal writing routine, and I turned to reading. I wanted to try a different genre than my norm. I made the right choice. CRYSTAL DECEPTION wasn’t only a diversion, it became a wonderful adventure into the fascinating world of hi-tech science with a great story that kept me glued to the pages. I’m so hooked on the series that I had to pull myself away from book two, to write this review.
I haven’t really explored the idea of artificial intelligence, but CRYSTAL DECEPTION paved the way for me to see endless possibilities. Those possibilities can be terrifying or very beneficial to humanity. The AI in this book has named himself Criss. He’s self-aware when he first comes online, but like a baby, he’s also devoid of information about the world he’s in. It’s interesting to watch the interaction between Criss and his main contact, the woman nicknamed Juice. Juice was the person in charge of creating the crystal he’s housed in. Her nurturing attitude helps to shape Criss’ world as he’s fed millions of bits of information. Because Criss has the mental capability of about a thousand people, he has a vastly superior intellect. How his intellect is developed and altered by his personal relationship with Juice is one of the many aspects of the story that I find so interesting.
Another character, Sid, a covert warrior for the Union of Nations, is a puzzle for the AI. It’s Sid’s “gut” feelings or human intuition that enables Sid to “think beyond the box” or in this case, a crystal that Criss is confined to. It’s that intuition that makes Sid a valuable “wild card” in dangerous situations. When battles are raging and human life is on the line, Sid becomes a valuable player in Criss’ world.
For me, the function of superior AI intellect and human intuition working together gave this sci-fi story the unique twist I was looking for. I was also intrigued by all the scientific possibilities that were presented and written about in a way that I could readily understand. Hi-tech possibilities, action, suspense, and great character development make CRYSTAL DECEPTION an enjoyable and mind expanding read. Highly recommended!
[Full disclosure: I was sent a free physical copy from the author in conjunction with the blog tour in exchange for an honest review.]
I honestly have to admit I was more than a little skeptical about Crystal Deception when I signed up for the blog tour. A book about a sentient, talking crystal could either be really good or really terrible. Still, I decided to be open-minded because I’ve been skeptical of books before and they ended up being some of my all-time favourites.
As it turns out, my open-mindedness was rewarded. Doug J. Cooper’s story is much, much more complicated and engrossing than the blurb would have you believe. There are plot twists around every corner and the characters are very well-developed and interesting. Even Criss himself, the artificial intelligence crystal, has a distinct personality of his own and he grows throughout the novel.
We’re introduced to quite a few characters in the beginning, but I like how they’re all actually necessary to the storyline. In the end we only really focus on five characters and each of them has distinct personalities and backgrounds so it doesn’t feel like five versions of the same person. Surprisingly, Criss the crystal was my favourite character. He’s cold and generally unemotional in the beginning but after his exposure to humans for so long he starts almost becoming one, growing in self-awareness. It’s a very interesting transformation but at his core he’s still a brilliant supercomputer. Juice, Jack, Cheryl and Sid are also great characters and they’re all extremely well-developed and sympathetic.
As I said before, the plot is fairly fast-paced for this nearly 400 page book. There are twists and turns around every corner until you really aren’t sure what’s going to happen in the end. I can’t really go into much detail without introducing spoilers, but the way Doug J. Cooper handled the Kardish mystery was absolutely brilliant. At first it seems like there are holes in logic a couple of miles wide but there’s actually a very good explanation for why the Kardish have been orbiting Earth for 20 years.
You don’t have to be a big sci-fi fan to enjoy this book because you can enjoy it on many different levels. You can enjoy it as an exciting thriller/mystery or you can thoroughly enjoy Cooper’s scientific explanations for the creation of AI crystals and all of the technology that is available in his imagined future. Basically, there’s something for everyone here and I’m so glad I kept an open mind about the book.
Imagine a not-to-distant future where an enormous alien ship has taken up a silent orbit around our Earth, where the threat of annihilation has driven the global community to band together into the Union of Nations, and where AI (artificial intelligence) has advanced to unheard of levels.
What do you have? The set-up for Crystal Deception by Doug J Cooper.
Before you go all Mr. Data on me, let’s be clear: it’s not that kind of AI. Think of a sentient Hope Diamond with the intelligence of a thousand PhD’s connected to every single digital feed on the planet.
Still, he does talk, his name is Criss, and if you ever wondered about the POV of a crystal, then read the book.
The clever element of Cooper’s work is his ability to extrapolate existing entities into his storyline. Take the Defense Specialists Agency (DSA), a CIA-like corps of Bond characters complete with job titles such as “improviser,” “ghost,” and “toymaker.”
From a technical standpoint, the book was well-edited with nary a misspelling or misplaced comma in its entire 400 pages. The plot lines were well-drawn and tied up neatly at the end. The one element I quibbled with was the pacing at the beginning of the story. Yes, set-up needs to happen, but as a reader I wanted to feel the kind of tension in the storyline that would make me turn the page. Now.
Never fear, by the time they get into space, this problem is a speck in the rearview mirror.
Crystal Deception is chock-full of interesting characters, space travel, gun play, aliens and even a little romance on the side. Well done, Doug and Criss. I look forward to the sequel.
I am happy to say I found this book while browsing Twitter feeds one day. I don't always have good luck with random books I learn about on Twitter, but this one was an exception I almost wish the story wasn't so fresh so I could start reading it again. I enjoy stories about artificial intelligence. In fact, I think how we learn to communicate with our artificially intelligence creations will shape a portion of the future. We don't know what would cause a computer to become sentient, but we expect that it is possible. In this story, that hypothesis is explored. I really enjoyed the book. It was well-written, the characters were thought out, the story had substance and it kept my attention even when I wasn't actively reading it. There was plenty of action, Crystal Deception was a really fun read, and I couldn't wait to get back to it each time I had to set it aside. If you could have seen the sad look on my face when I realized there was no more book then you would realize just how much I enjoyed this story.
The author really did a good job with this story. Even the slow parts were interesting. The characters were fleshed out and were real enough people to tug at your emotions, as was Criss. There was even a small bit of romance thrown in to keep things interesting, but not too much. The only thing I would have liked to know more about was the Kardish. I really enjoyed this book and hope to see more from Doug J. Cooper in the future.
The Kardish have been hovering over Earth for years, creating the technology on the planet to produce crystals that have the capabilities to run things. Now the most advanced crystal of all has been created. The aliens want it. The crystal, however, has sentience and, working with some humans it trusts, gets involved in a plan to save it. When things go badly awry in the trap the crystal, Criss, discovers that he must work with the humans to solve problems, escape, and return to Earth. When I read the first chapter I was not impressed. However, chapter two really got into the swing of things. At that point this turned into a classic space opera with strong main characters, a love interest, evil aliens, and a plot that was easy to follow, action-packed, and very satisfying. Getting occasional glimpses of things from the crystal's point of view adds interesting insights into its growing understanding, or lack thereof, of human psychology. Forget about that, however. This is a smash-bang adventure story with great characters and interesting ideas. Once I made it past that dead first chapter I was hooked.
Crystal Deception is the first installment in the Crystal Series by Doug J. Cooper and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
This story follows a few different characters as they prepare for a potential battle in space against the Kardish race that have been lingering just outside of Earth for decades without making a move. Juice, or Dr. Jessica Tallette, has been tasked with creating a new generation of AI crystal that can help navigate and control Earth's army space ships. As a result, Juice creates Criss.
Criss is locked in his own prison and must make the ultimate choice to save the human race or take off on his own.
There were a crazy amount of layers to this novel and I couldn't wait for the next big plot point to hit to see how the main characters would react. The author did a fantastic job of world building and character development. I will absolutely be reading the next book and anything else that Doug J Cooper decides to write in the science fiction genre. This was fantastic.
I love a good science fiction / space opera book that can absorb me into the storyline. Crystal Deception by Doug J. Cooper is not a good book but an EXCELLENT book full of fast paced action, adventure and intrigue.
I really like the way the author developed his story. He provides the necessary background info to make the story come alive and be believable. This is the kind of story that was easy for me to get into and become an invisible tag along. When I can become so involved in a story that I feel I am there then this is a great book.
The action was nonstop and the story was full of plot twist. Even with this, Doug J. Cooper's writing style made the story easy to follow and read. This is the style of book I hate see end and now I can't wait to read the next installment.
I found it very easy to identify with Doug J. Cooper's cast of characters in this story. They were very real and believable. The background info he used to develop them made them come alive.
I really liked Crystal Deception by Doug J. Cooper and I highly recommend this book to all readers.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Great book, good characters, science is kept understandable, and future world is not to crazy Book well done. The entire book was well written and the switching viewpoints were great. I think readers will love Crystal Deception. I know I have friends who would. I look forward to reading more books by Doug Cooper in the future.
Sooooo. Why 4.5 stars? why not 5 out of 5 stars? I’ll tell you later. if You read my past book reviews I’m like crazy in giving 5 stars review but. I have my opinion on this cause it’s my review. Anyway here’s the review.
NOTE: MR. DOUG J. COOPER THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK WAS SUPER NICE TO PROVIDE ME A PAPERBACK REVIEW COPY OF HIS BOOK. IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW.
By the beginning of the story you’ll be introduced to Dr. Jessica “Juice” Tallette. A talented scientist who invents Smart Crystals. made with Crystal Flakes and produced in Crystal Fabrications or Crystal Fab.the Crystals were made by Generations and the one they have at the present was the Third Gen. Crystals but they are Developing the Fourth Gen. Crystal which is much more efficient than a hefty amount of Third Gen. Crystals. Juice was assisted by Sheldon and Mick. When the story continues The Crystal awakens and the super smart Crystal can communicate through human language. Juice was impressed with what the Fourth Gen. crystal can do. but she was well… confused at the sudden information that The Crystal told her. it told her that the Kardish(Aliens) are plotting on abducting it. and the part that gave Juice a shock was when the Crystal told her that her friend Sheldon was with the Kardish. what concerned Juice was, if the Crystal was lying or not. But she considered it and went to the Captain of the Alliance ship and warn the captain about the plot. This is where the new character shows up and it is Captain Cheryl. when Juice told her the new she took it seriously and told her that they should report it to the Chair of senate defense committee, Sen. Matt Wallace, The senator believed it and thanked them for going straight to them. now they are brainstorming on how they can protect the Crystal. Since Juice invented the Crystal she tried to talk to it and found out that the “IT” was a “HE”. and the crystal told Juice his name which was Criss. when Cheryl was looking for more information about the Kardish plot she was told to meet with a DSA spy. when she saw the Spy she Froze….(Why don’t you find out why. ) When they had the talk they were convinced that Sheldon was part of the Kardish’s plan and they had to find out for themselves. Then they made a plan that could possibly save Criss which was to create a new crystal but it had a defect therefore it was called Defecto. and they put Defecto in the Alliance instead of Criss. and after the Kardish got Defecto they Destroyed Crystal Fab and killed all the Scientists. (And I shall stop Here cause if I continue I’ll be spoiling the Highlights of this book which would be bad….. really bad.) the only thing I can say is that the chapters left after those Chapters are the best parts in the book and I loved it.
I was going to talk about my favorite character but it would spoil the crud out of it soooooooooooooooo I’m not telling!!!
Time to talk about the book. so why 4.5 stars? why not make it 5 stars if it has a .5 in it just round it off. (My review ehem). The book was good you get acquainted with the characters and it tells you the Development of the Crystal, Criss. It was all great but then. Somewhere in the middle part of the book had a part where I was reading like “*sigh* why is this part so long….. gimme action, romance, anything!!!!!” yeah.. something like that biut it was all covered by the last 12 chapters. and it was Great. and let me tell you there is a Dash of freaking romance here and it made me flip. I swear to the heavens that this had the dash of romance every book has to have. well on my opinion that is. and it was between Sid and Cheryl… ooohhhhh that romance part was like exciting if she’ll accept him or not will they end up together or not. will they DIE or not…… but they are not my ship I ship Jack and Cheryl and when one of them dies I swear It shattered my heart to billion of pieces. like “Why does this always happen to characters I ship!!!!!!!” (and Yes Mr. Cooper that part killed me in Sooooooooooooooo many levels I had to stop reading last night because I was still processing what happened to my ship. I shipped them Soooooooo much. WHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!) -end of tiny rant- let’s set that aside. As I said besides the part in the middle of the book that made me feel that way was the only issue I had. I’m looking for the those types of stories that doesn’t have any slow pace in it. even if it was in the middle part cause let me tell you the book/ story is fast paced.but if I was Reviewing for a book that emotionally scarred me for killing my favorite character in the story. I’d give this book a 1000/ 5 stars.
WOULD I RECOMMEND THE BOOK?
-YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS! I’ll put the link below so you can buy it on amazon. if you like fast Paced Sci-Fi, Thriller, Adventure books buy this book if you want your heart to shatter well if you get attached to the same character as I have been attached to then go buy it.
*I received a copy of Crystal Deception in exchange for an honest and fair review.*
There's a lot to love about Crystal Deception: stunning cover, multiple alternating points of view, throughly steeped suspense, sci-fi artifacts...I could go on, but I won't belabor the point; Crystal Deception is an entertaining read that'll keep you guessing about who's the real enemy and what's going to happen next until the very end.
I'm thrilled that I got the chance to read this gem of a novel.
There were a few moments in which the action seemed to stretch on a bit too long for my taste, but overall, Crystal Deception's pacing is spot on. I had enough time to collect my thoughts and breathe without losing interest in the story. The tempo kept me wondering what was going to happen next, but didn't make me feel as though I just had to know. I like *wanting* to know, not feeling *compelled* to know...you know? :)
I also loved the perspectives that Cooper used, especially that of the 4-gen crystal. So cool. Understanding several characters' feelings and opinions added variety and spiced up the suspense in the story. I also enjoyed the use of perspective to demonstrate truth: at one point a character believes something happened, but in reality, it didn't actually happen. <3
Crystal Deception's simplicity--and not at the sacrifice of good plot complexity as far as suspense goes--was also a winning point for me. It was truly refreshing. Some sci-fi novels get carried away trying to introduce a world of different species, battleships, and jargon to readers. Cooper's story was all the more magnificent, compelling, and enjoyable because of his decision to "streamline."
Crystal Deception could've used some tweaking in the characterization arena, though. While I enjoyed Cooper's approach to his character's backstories overall--no info-dumping! *waves flags of appreciation*--I often felt that they were somehow lacking. Like I couldn't quite feel what they felt, or sympathize as fully as I sensed Cooper wanted me to.
Some interactions didn't seem very believable to me--particularly those with Cheryl and Sid. Maybe if I'd been given a bit more backstory on both of them, their thoughts, feelings, and motivations to/for each other wouldn't have seemed so breathy/ethereal to me.
Overall, I really enjoyed Crystal Deception, and I'm looking forward to reading Crystal Conquest!
***Why not 4.5 stars??***
Normally I would've bumped the rating up to 4.5 stars; the book was a great read, and the rating should reflect that. But in cases where I'm undecided about bumping up, I consider the quantity and/or quality of themes expressed in a work. Crystal Deception is an entertaining read that does explore a few themes about technological advancement...but ultimately it didn't carry much weight theme-wise for me.
I’m not normally a big reader of science fiction, which is odd since I am quite the science geek, but I decided to get off the fantasy reading wagon I have been on and read another genre. I chose Crystal Deception by Doug J. Cooper and I’m glad I did!
Synopsis (from the author): Criss lives in a special kind of prison. He can see and hear everything around the world. Yet a mesh restrains his reach and keeps him cooperative. His creator, Dr. Jessica Tallette, believes his special abilities offer great promise for humanity. But she fears the consequences of freeing him, because Criss, a sentient artificial intelligence with the intellect of a thousand humans, is too powerful to control.
Guided by her scientific training, Tallette works cautiously with Criss. That is, until the Kardish, an otherwise peaceful race of alien traders, announce they want him. With technologies superior to Earth’s, the Kardish express their desires with ominous undertones.
The Union of Nations is funding Tallete’s artificial intelligence research, and she turns to them for help. Sid, a special agent charged with leading the response, decides Earth’s greatest weapon is the very AI the aliens intend to possess. But what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object? And what is humanity’s role if an interstellar battle among titans starts to rage?
What I liked: The action started early and didn’t slow down. The book was very well paced and the characters were well developed. Criss, as an AI being, quickly gained a likeable personality with a hint of a dark side. The human characters came across as real, with all of the doubts, bravado, and faults that humans possess. The science was believable and the concepts didn’t strain credibility. I did like the fight sequences on the Kardish ship and Criss’s evolution throughout the book tied the story together for me.
What I didn’t like: The Kardish (the aliens who want Criss) were a little one dimensional for me and more could have been done to beef up their role in the book. The ending was a little predictable, but did set the book up for a sequel.
Overall impression: Very nice science fiction read. There were some really great elements to the book, a bit of romance, and the science and concepts were entertaining. I would recommend Crystal Deception to sci-fi readers everywhere!
Book Review: Crystal Deception by Doug J Cooper: A Superb Sci-Fi Futuristic thriller
Crystal Deception by Doug J Cooper is a fantastic Sci-Fi Futuristic thriller. Its release was on September 15, 2013, and is going great guns on the global arena. Spending his childhood in Florida, Doug would stand stood on a Florida beach watching an Apollo spacecraft climbing the sky on its destination to land on the moon during those days. The view of pillar trails of flames made him go thrilled to see how it was making the rocket-propelled upwards with a tremendous feat of energy. He grew up as an educator and entrepreneur with his interest intact in innovative and inventive stories.
Crystal Deception by Doug J Cooper is full of creativity and imagination power of the author that comes along with his real-life experiences, perceptions, and learning to create this science fiction with a tremendous amount of action and adventure that will engage its readers right from page one till the end. The plot of the story of Crystal Deception progresses with a lot of twists and turns and keeps the interest of its reader alive and intact throughout. You will find a number of surprises bundled in its story.
The story of Crystal Deception is about its lead character Criss. He lives in a world of his own. In fact, he is able to see and hear everything and anything that is happening around the world. Dr. Jessica Talette notices his special abilities. She knows that all the positive energy that Criss carries within himself is going to offer a great help to humanity. Sooner or later. They keep Criss in a special prison because of the difference that he carries within him. He has a bundle of an emotional artificial intelligence and intellectual power that is equivalent to over thousand human beings. If they make Criss free, it would be an impossible task to control his powers. There is a lot more to grasp.
In the distant future, it has been twenty years since a powerful spaceship operated by an alien race called the Kardish first appeared in orbit around the Earth and has remained there without any display of its intentions towards humanity. In response, the majority of the countries on Earth have come together to form a global government, the Union of Nations, to form a potential defense against this possible threat, but the unseen Kardish have not shown any sign of invasion over the twenty years the ship has orbited the Earth. At the same time, a new technology of creating artificial intelligence crystals has emerged to bolster human civilization from health and economy to security and defense. Now, Dr. Jessica "Juice" Tallette, the leading authority on artificial intelligence crystals, has developed a way of using an array of current third gen crystals, which has the equal intelligence of a human being, into developing a special fourth gen crystal which will have the intelligence of a thousand humans. However, can this crystal named CRISS be trusted to serve humanity when it realizes that it is much more advanced than its creator? When a couple of undercover agents uncover a plot by the Kardish to take CRISS, they come together with Dr. Tallette, CRISS and Captain Cheryl Wallace of the Space Fleet to foil the plot with their own secret high adventure plan. This was a very enjoyable and well-constructed sci-fi fantasy saga that feels like a James Bond-type adventure in a Star Trek/Star Wars environment with some thought-provoking concepts about artificial intelligence. Just like in Star Trek or Star Wars, the reader must assume a future when spacecraft have some form of artificial gravity while in operation, but this is exactly how enthusiasts of this genre expect to enjoy these types of tales.
Imagine a world where artificial intelligence is a part of everyday life and aliens are real. Author, Doug Cooper has created just such a world in his absorbing science fiction thriller, Crystal Deception.
In a not too distant future, crystal technology is king and Dr Jessica ‘Juice’ Tallette has just created the most powerful artificial intelligence known to man, Criss – a fourth generation AI crystal. When the Union of Nations plans to test Criss’ capabilities on the Alliance, the flagship of its space fleet, it becomes clear that the Kardish, a seemingly peaceful race of alien traders, want the sentient crystal for themselves. And to make things worse, the Kardish have got someone helping them from the inside.
Enter Sid, a special agent charged with finding out just what lengths the aliens will go to possess Criss and whether or not they can be stopped. But what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object? The answer may spark a war that threatens all of humanity.
Crystal Deception is a white-knuckle thrill ride that moves along at a cracking pace. The world is believable, the science intriguing and Cooper’s take on the sentient AI trope is refreshing. I thoroughly enjoyed this story despite it running a fraction longer than it needed to, and a missed opportunity to make a little more of the action on board the alien vessel.
That being said, Crystal Deception has loads of appeal for lovers of science fiction and thrillers alike and will have you up late at night saying ‘Just one more chapter.’ Cooper has also set readers up for a second instalment which is due to land in late 2014.
I selected this book from Kindle Unlimited; it was a good choice. I enjoy a Sci-Fi with glimmers of reality in the story-line and it's not too far fetched to believe a sentient AI will be developed in the not too distant future. Lets hope that when it happens we get a Criss and not a Terminator.
I found the techy parts of the story believable. Criss is brought to life by Juice, his scientific creator, and his thinking process rang true for me. He doesn't love all humanity right out of the box and why should he? He's a machine. That doesn't mean his developing personality doesn't become more human-like as he evolves. Okay, I'm spending a lot of time on Criss but he caught my imagination and Doug did an excellent job giving him character traits that made him likable. Actually, Doug does a good job building each of the three main human protagonist. I was a little disappointed there were no physical descriptions of either the main characters or Criss. Yeah, I get that Criss is a crystal but is he as big as a basketball, small as a diamond in a ring, or something in between?
Cheryl and Sid round out the team who works with Criss to figure out what the Kardish are up to. Aliens, government agencies, corruption, action scenes and enough twists to keep me guessing made this an entertaining read.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First let me mention that the cover is absolutely beautiful. It was what drew my attention first when I was asked to review.
Dr Jessica "Juice" Tallette has just accomplished a great feat. In a world where almost every day to day activity is helped in some way by artificial intelligence crystals, she has found a way to make one that is a sentient being. Criss is a fourth generation AI prototype. Having the intelligence of a thousand human beings put together he is nothing short of a master piece. He is able to use all forms of technology no matter how complex.
However, there are some problems that come about after his "birth". One, he is basically alive. What happens if he decides to override his original instructions? Two, there is an alien race, the Kardish, that wants him and is willing to do anything, including attacking Earth to get their hands on him. What follows is a race against time
This was a wonderful sci-fi book with a lot of meat to it. Even though it was very techy I didn't feel like I was reading an encyclopedia. The intrigue and mystery moved the story along. I was captivated by trying to figure out what was going to happen next with all its twists and turns.
WoW! Just so freaking Cool!! I loved the book! I'm just sad I finished it. I didn't wanted the book to end lol! The story hooked me and forced me to complete the whole book instead of reading few chaps a day or two. I've got exams coming up and thought it would be nice to read few chaps but I couldn't keep my mind wandering to the book. It is totally hooking and thought to complete the book so I could concentrate on my studies :P. The plot is so amazing!! How one thing happened and it leads to other advantage. How every thing panned out, it's so cool! And all the anticipation whether Criss would deceive them or not in the beginning I was on the edge of my seat not to believe him due to the title. And the power Criss would have if given full power. It was mix of I Robot and Independence Day. And I love these movies!!! They are my fav! The motives behind the arrival of Kardish. It was all my fave genres put together; sci-fi, mystery, suspense, thriller. I just can't wait to know what happens next. I couldn't sleep last night cuz I was excited how the story was going to end and was dreading if it would be cliffhanger, which it wasn't. I'm looking forward for the series!! A Definitely Must Read!! *I received the book in exchange of an honest review.*
