The End of All Things #1.5

Tales from the End

Rate this book
From the author of The End of All Things comes a collection of short stories about the Infection that swept around the globe, decimating the population, and leaving behind a small number of survivors, unprepared to deal with the brutal new world which had replaced the one they'd known.

And now, Lissa Bryan gives us three new stories in Tales from the End, and one bonus story that was previously published. Two are an introduction to new characters in the upcoming sequel to The End of All Things, and the other two are a visit with old friends.

The Horsemen
L.A.'s mayor has declared quarantine to try to halt the spread of the Infection. Pearl sets off across the city to buy supplies, but already the world is changing. Something strange is in the air. The Horsemen are coming ...

Veronica
When Veronica's mother doesn't come home from work and no one answers the phone when she calls for help, a nine-year-old girl is thrown into the chaos of a world coming to an end. Veronica decides it's up to her to find her family. "Veronica" is the story of a little girl's courage in the face of the end of all things.

"I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud"
They called her Shadowfax-- the mare Carly and Justin found on their travels. But before she was found by Carly, the retired dressage horse was known as Cloud. An unusual tale of the end, told through the eyes of a confused and lonely horse, left in her pasture.

Birthday
(A previously-published bonus story.) Carly knows Justin has never celebrated his birthday, and after society crumbled, no one knows what date it is, anyway. But she wants to do something special for him. Celebrating the little things helps them keep hope alive, and as a blizzard rages outside, a small gesture of love warms their home.

Tales of courage, tales of survival... Tales from the End.

A perfect companion to the incredible journey begun in Lissa's The End of All Things. It's all at once, horrifying, heart wrenching, and mesmerizing. If you have read, or plan to read The End of All Things, or its sequel, The Land of the Shadow, be sure to read this. It's not to be missed!

I couldn't wait, I needed to read these stories as soon as possible!

I loved The End of All Things.

Carly and Justin are permanent dwellers in my heart, as is Shadowfax. I am also super excited to know Lissa is writing the sequel, The Land of the Shadow, definitely a must read for me.

Now, Tales from the End, 4 amazing, yes amazing little stories that introduce new characters and bring back familiar ones.

Heart breaking and heart warming, strength and perseverance, despair and hope, courage and survival.

So many emotions, that I had tears, thumping of the heart, the oh my goodness trepidation, huge face cracking smiles, and lastly, sighing because these short little stories were well worth the wait!

Here's a quick little breakdown -

The Horsemen - The story of Pearl who's life changes instantly when the city goes under quarantine. Her courage in the face of despair was heart breaking and heart warming. The last words she hears from her mother, "you must try" just gripped my heart as she set out on the journey of survival. (really hope the author includes Pearl in the sequel!)

Veronica - OK, this one just about killed me with the heart break. Veronica is 9 yrs old, family gone, and only two kind strangers to depend and survive on...need I say more?

I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud - This is Shadowfaxes prequel to meeting Carly and Justin. Loved it! Told in Shadowfaxes POV too. Definite feelings of trepidation and huge face cracking grins!

Birthday - This one brings back Carly and Justin. Love, sweetness, happiness in the midst of surviving. Lovely uplifting story. Love these two and want more more more.

Tales from the End is a must read for anyone who loved The End of All Things.

Tales from the End is a must read for anyone who loves good stories.

Tales from the End is a must read for anyone who loves their emotions turned in to a jambalaya of oh my goodness, oh my goodness, oh my goodness.

Tales from the End is a must read.

INITIAL THOUGHTS
I actually missed hearing about this one, I found it quite by accident on Netgalley, but after reading The End Of All Things felt this was a must read compilation of short stories based around the first book. As I enjoyed The End Of All Things so much I had high expectations for this book, and definitely wanted some more Carly & Justin.

MY REVIEW
So as I have said above I downloaded an e-book of this from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. The cover of the book ties in well with the series and that of book one, which I think is a good thing.
So now to the individual stories. . .
The Horsemen
The first short story centre's around Pearl, who is the agent of a rather demanding actor. The "disaster" starts by what appears to be a lot of cases of a bad flu, so Pearl decides to stay home and work from home to avoid the chances of catching the virus. Then when a quarantine is declared she has no choice but to head out to obtain supplies. Pearl witness the world quite literally going mad . . I enjoyed Pearl's story and hope we learn more of her in the next book on The End Of All Things Series which is called The Land Of The Shadow.
Veronica
This story is about a little girl who is just nine years old who literally finds herself home alone when her mum has had to take her brother to hospital. Veronica's brother has a poor immune system as he has suffered a serious illness prior to this latest outbreak. Veronica is a very brave little girl who initially stays home and waits and waits for a phonecall or help to come to hr. When help doesn't arrive she gathers supplies and sets off to the hospital to find her family. The story is a sad one, though there is hope for Veronica as she meets two other survivors who are willing to help her. Again I'd really love to know more about Veronica's story and find out where she goes after making it the hospital and realising the awful truth.
"I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud"
This story is totally different as the main character is a horse. The horse is named Cloud and has been mistreated by her first owners. This story tells of "The End Of All Things" from the unique point of view of this horse and what the animal goes through and what she has to do to survive. We already know what happens to Cloud "later"as she is found by Carly and Justin and they name her Shadowfax. Of course I want to know even more as I want to read The Land Of Shadow as soon as it's available!
Birthday
I was going to say that this short story was my favourite but being completely honest I truly loved them all! Though in this short story we take a look at Carly and Justin and to be fair it wouldn't be a book about The End Of All Things if it didn't give us a snapshot or two of the two main characters. So in this story we read about Carly making Justin a rather gooey birthday cake that doesn't go exactly to plan or recipe but hat Justin loves simply because Carly went to the time and trouble to make it for him. I love these two characters and any interaction between them so of course I enjoyed this one!

On the whole I have to admit to having read and enjoyed each and every one of these short tales. the only downside if it can be called a downside is that this collection of stories made me want to read more about Carly and Justin and their journey right now!

So did I enjoy the book/collection of short stories? I really enjoyed them. They were a taster of more great action to come in book two! Would I recommend the book/story collection? Yes, they will make you want book two even more and hopefully the characters in the short stories may be featuring in book two as well. Would I want to read more of this series? Oh, definitely. Would I want to read more books/short stories by this Author?`Yes, please! I really enjoy Lissa Bryan's writing style and story telling.

With Tales from the End, Lissa Bryan plunges us back into the world of her post-dystopian romance, The End of All Things. Having read and relished the latter, I came to this collection of Tales well-acquainted with the Infection and its decimating effect on earth’s population.

The magic of Tales from the End is Bryan’s ability to infuse stories of loss and widespread devastation with a palpable, enduring sense of hope. Because Carly and Justin survived The End, we know it is possible to outlast the Infection. And as we meet Pearl and Veronica in the first two stories—the second two tales reacquaint us with friends from The End—we pray they have the chance.

For their part, their desires are initially simple. Pearl wants her cranky client Randall to pick up his fan mail so she can dump him from her roster. Nine-year-old Veronica wants to eat dinner so she can go to bed at a decent hour. But as these problems brush against the backdrop of the looming Infection, Bryan is at her best—showcasing the humanity’s compassion and its innate refusal to go down without a fight no matter the odds.

The third story provides us with a unique perspective—a horse named Cloud. Her wordless, equine view of the end’s advance is powerful in its simplicity. Something is very wrong, something to which she cannot put a proper name, and our concern for her well-being is immediate and acute. Without a human advocate, how will she survive?

We are relieved to visit with Carly and Justin, the protagonists from The End, in the last story. Carly has a happy surprise for Justin, and this slice of normalcy amid perpetual concerns for their survival is that much more poignant. This story is an apt end to the four-part collection and is enough to tide me over until the sequel to The End of All Things is released.

Barely.

I could go on and on about Bryan’s brilliance, the beauty of her taut, evocative prose and her mastery of setting and the right details. But I’d rather you grabbed a copy of Tales from the End and see for yourself. And if you haven’t already, grab The End of All Things while you’re at it. I promise you’ll thank me!

I absolutely loved The End of All Things and this collection of stories from that dystopian world is a wonderful complement to that book. Here we meet some new characters, as well as revisiting Carly, Justin and Shadowfax - horse POV! - and get a bit more insight into the Infection. Veronica's story was just heartbreaking, and I hope the sequel - coming later this year - will give us a happy ending for her and Pearl.

Nice to have a background on the new people. I am a little confused about Stacy and Mark. Did they decide to take care of Veronica? I love the short about Cloud now Shadowfax. I love the horse.
