2020 Read #180

Reread in 2020

I’m always reminded of Peach Girl by Miwa Ueda when I read this series. There are similar themes about bullying, harassment, identity, and self-worth. It’s just one of those series that can be read quickly yet it can also be a deeper read if you look into it with time and investment.

Oh man, just when I think Nana can't kick anymore ass she always does!! I love her! Like whoa! I want to be her! Like whoa! Hahaha, and she reminds me A LOT of Jadzia (and only my love muffin will know what that means ;-) and so, that also makes me love Nana even more)!

I even love Yaya! She reminds me a lot of Tohru, but with more insecurities. My favorite part of the entire volume was near the end when Hano-chan showed up and was just talking nonstop to Yaya about Moriyama and her words were "stabbing" Yaya....so at the end of the day, she looked like this:

Yaya stabbed with words

XD! She wasn't literally stabbed but she felt like it, so I loved how Ikezawa-sensei portrayed it in the drawings. It was hilarious and I was laughing the whole time (even though I felt bad for Yaya)

Anyway, I'm still LOVING this series!! It's fantastic!

I feel like Yaya did kind of know about Nana and has somehow backtracked and forgotten. I feel sorry for Yaya as being overly polite is a fault I own in some circumstances. Moriyama should just tell Yaya the truth about Nana.

Summary of Volume 3:
Moriyama's mysterious, devilishly handsome friend who turns up in Volume 2, has taken an interest in Nana's singing abilities. But Nana seems to be able to see right through Shohei's hidden agenda and begs Moriyama to sing in his band instead. Moriyama debates letting Nana join the band knowing that fearless Nana can transform back into shy Yaya with any small mishap. He finally agrees to let her join the band, but he does it for Yaya whose dream is to become a singer. Will Nana be able to keep up the act, or will shy Yaya take the stage again with stage fright?

And who is this cute girl named Hano-Chan who seems sweet on the outside but has her own secret agendas?

Themes:
Rock, Bands, Music, Friendship, Cosplay, Fans, Courage, and Split Personalities.

My Thoughts:
I read this book in high school and I still am in love with it seven years later. As Seri and Moe have finally left Yaya alone, this volume focuses more on the growing relationship between Moriyama and Yaya and it also begins to focus on Yaya's singing talent. It's nice to see the series take a break from the bullying themes and focus more on the musical themes in this particular volume.

Audience:
17+ due to violence and mature content in the series

Overall, this is a pretty kick-ass manga.

Ooh, it's getting complicated! How can Yaya be jealous of Nana if they're the same person? Once again, I can't feel sorry for Yaya, people like her who refuse to stand up for themselves make me ten kinds of angry - which is why Nana is the best! She's that little voice in every girl's head that tells us to quit being docile and obedient and just go for it, no matter what! I don't get why Moriyama doesn't tell Yaya about Nana, it seems a little bit unkind to keep that from her, especially if he likes her. Yaya is such a pushover that she'd probably believe him instantly. Syohei is another interesting wrench in the works! He likes Nana, but Nana likes Moriyama, who likes Yaya, who likes both Moriyama and Syohei as 'Shohei' from Juliet... ha ha, what a tangled web they weave! I honestly can't figure out how this is going to work out in the end - but I can't wait to find out!

Poor bullied Yaya is a shy, gentle girl who can't say a word back to any of her bullies but hiding inside her, waiting for a catalyst, is Nana. Nana is tough as nails and does Yaya's vengence. Unfortunately Nana's 'help' often isn't.

Yaya gains a rival for Moriyama's affections and Moriyama's brother wants Nana bad. Plenty of kooky fun in this volume complete with pet alligators. Nana is becoming more than just a character who comes out to protect Yaya, becoming her own person with her own aspirations. Yaya herself isn't doing a lot of growing yet, though she is becoming increasingly aware of her blackouts.

I recommend this book/series for any shojo manga fan.

FINALLY, the love triangles show up, (because I knew they were coming). This series is definitely getting better with every book. The predicament with Yaya/Nana becomes more fluid, there's many a new conflict, and the pace quickens. This story might impress me after all.

Awesome series with a great storyline. I love the art in this one. The main character is so lovable. I love the whole psych twist to it. I never got to finish, but I would really like to.

The story is a typical shoujo story. But I just LOVE the art, although my drawings are nothing near to it, and I don't intend to draw this style :P
