Werewolves are on the hunt in this next volume of Hallowmere...
With the culmination of Between Golden Jaws, Corrine and all of her friends are thrown into separate fairy worlds. Ilona finds herself in one of these raths, a world controlled by an evil countess so obsessed by youth, she sacrifices young girls to draw their life force into her own. Forced to join the countess's troop of werewolves, Ilona must help in their mission of kidnapping girls from the mortal world. As she puzzles over how to save the girls without putting herself in danger, she begins to fall for one of the werewolf lieutenants. It's the chance for love she's always dreamed of, but at what cost?
Tiffany Trent's thrilling series continues in this next Hallowmere book, written in partnership with Angelika Ranger. Ranger's lyrical writing gives voice to Corrine's tough but wary friend Ilona Takar, as Ilona embarks on an otherworldly journey that will help determine the fate of Corrine and all the girls from Falston.

This was kind of slooooooooow. For a character based on Countess Elizabeth Bathory, a serial killer and bather in the blood of virgins, the book's countess was dull and didn't seem that threatening. Ilona was not at all cunning and pretty much seemed to stumble into resolving her quest. Meh.
This was my first YA book that I've read. This book was devastatingly beautiful. My heart fell in love yet at the same time had broken. The male character was totally handsome and irresistable. The female protagonist was so bad ass. I have hope that the ending was not like that. Huhuhu. Totally recommend it.
Trent had at the end of Between Golden Jaws left with many questions to follow. Though it does not drive out my whole curiosity I am glad to have at least someones tale. Ilona, are boy-girl, has been sent to a Rath(faerie realm) to retrieve the rathstone hidden in the realm so the Hallowed can reclaim their power. But when she arrives she is caught and taken to the castle of the (evil) Countess, who feeds of young maidens to stay youthful and beautiful, and held prisoner. Now she must get the rathstone, save the maidens, free the servants and stay alive. But she desires to be with the soldier she has come to love and fighting. She has to decide over what she wants or what she must do.
I was not disappointed by this tale. Like other Previous Hollowmere novels the story is quick to read, holds your interest throughout the book without too much excitement and a get storyline that ends with one wanting to find out what happens next.
Okay so I love the Hallowmere books BUT before you start reading them know that they just end there is no conclusion because the author wasn't finished with the series her publisher changed directions and wouldn't let her finish the books or have them published by a different company which I think is so horribly wrong to the readers, its not Tiffany Trents fault its the publishing company they should understand the entire reason they have a job is because of writers like her and readers like us who love her books if they wanted to change directions find go ahead but let her finish the story she started either with them or another company its terrible not to know the rest of the story so much so that I actually have two more of the books and I have yet to read them because its not where it is supposed to end so it just leaves you wondering what happend. What a shame.
This is not actually by Trent: she has freaking franchised out her own freaking story! Who does she think she is? James Patterson? At any rate, this story follows our tomboy sword-swinger Ilona as she travels into a rath (faerie realm place, man, try to keep up) to try and get one of the rathstones. In this one, werewolves take maidens from the villages to keep the evil queen-type young and beautiful. Ilona finds herself in the soldiers company and torn between doing what she always wanted--fighting and loving a fighter--or finishing her duty. Servicable writing by Angelika Ranger and a nice break from Corrine.
Countess Bathory is Creepy Woman Numero Uno-even creepier when I found out she was real. Elizabeth Bathory was a countess in Hungary in the 1500s-1600s and during that time killed about 600 girls to bathe in their blood and drink it. Apparantly she thought it would make her youth last longer. Although Countess Bathory was convicted, it took a remarkably long time for the authorities in her country to realize that 600 girls had gone missing.
And that's another reason why I like living in the 21st century.
I thought they werewolf aspect was interesting (Not a spoiler IMO since it basically says it straight out on the first page.) I also liked the change in point of view; it made this book seem more independent of the others.
The basic story is sound, but the delivery could be tighter and the prose more precise, less predictable. Ilona is my favorite character, but unfortunately the Ilona in this book sounded too different from Trent's Ilona.
This had to be my least favorite one in the series so far. I didn't like how the author changed the perspective of the story from Corrine to her friend. This book was also a little scary with the torture devices.
Unfortunately, Hallowmere, like many other series published by MirrorStone, has been discontinued. Please join my petition to get it back at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/c...
