About the author

Narayan Sanyal (bn: নারায়ণ সান্যাল) was a well-known & versatile writer of modern Bengali literature. He received several awards for literature including Rabindra Puraskar for Aporupa Ajanta (Bangla: অপরূপা অজন্তা) in 1969, Bankim Puraskar for Rupmonjori (Bangla: রূপমঞ্জরী) in 2000, and Narasingha Dutta Award. Many of his books were filmed and he won the Best Film Story Writer Award for Shotyokam (Bangla: সত্যকাম) by Bengal Film Journalists.

Sanyal wrote numerous books that dealt with many topics, such as children, science, art and architecture, travels, psychiatry, technology, refugee problems, history, biographical pieces, encyclopedia of animals, social novel and Devadasi-related. He also wrote a series of detective fiction called the Kanta (Thorn) series, the framework of which was borrowed from the Perry Mason series of novels by Erle Stanley Gardner. Some of the stories were inspired from popular Agatha Christie novels like Mousetrap, ABC Murders, etc.

Interestingly, this talented author also preferred writing books on deep shadow of many world famous works. One of the most popular Sci-Fictions Nakshatraloker Debatatma (Bangla: নক্ষত্রলোকের দেবাত্মা) is based on the transformation of human race from primitive creature to civilized intelligent species controlling the whole earth. Then it deals with Jupiter exploration and a super intelligent Computer HAL. The three parted book is a clear shadow of 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke. In his book, NS renamed HAL as 'Jantra-Na.' In his mother tongue Bangla, it means 'Not a Machine'.

His most popular work is Biswasghatak (Bangla: বিশ্বাসঘাতক) written about the Manhattan project that developed the first US Atom Bomb. This book is based on the shadow of Brighter than a Thousand Suns: A Personal History of the Atomic Scientists (1970), by Austrian Robert Jungk. Not a shadow, but almost translation in some parts. Few of the illustrations in this book have been taken from few Russian school level books.

Another book Timi Timingil (Bangla: তিমি তিমিঙ্গিল) is on Whales. This stands on an article published in Readers Digest. But while NS accepted this for Timi Timingil, he never mentioned or thanked authors of 2001 or Brighter.

Most of the "Kanta" series stories were copied or heavily inspired from Perry Mason novels. For example, "Ristedar-er Kanta" was copied from The case of the beautiful beggar, "Abhipurbak Ni-Dhatu Au-er Kanta" was inspired from The case of the restless redhead. Some of the stories were inspired from Agatha Christie stories. For example, "Dress Rehearsal-er Kanta" was inspired from Three Act Tragedy. NS acknowledged his inspirations in his first few "Kanta" series books, but forgot to do so for the latter ones.

Thousands of NS fans feel sorry of this as a man of his talent could have developed something even better instead of just 'Copying' and retouching others works while he had indeed produced some excellent works himself.

But it is undoubtedly accepted by all that NS was one of the finest authors in Bengali and he was a class apart from the flock of contemporary Bengali writers those who too dependent on sentiment and emotional overdose in their writings and too dependent on monopolist Bengali media/publication groups in commercial front.

লাস্ট কবে পুরো একটা বই পড়ে শেষ করেছিলাম মনে করতে পারছি না। গুডির শেলফ বলতেসে, গত মাসের আট তারিখ। এরপর ক্রমাগত পড়ার চেষ্টা করে গেছি... এই বইয়ের এইটুক তো অই বইয়ের অইটুক... বই আর শেষ হয় না। শেষও করতে পারি না। অনেক অনেক লেখককে রিফিউজ করবার পর অবশেষে স্যান্নাল সাহেবের হাত ধরে ওয়ান কাইন্ড অফ কোর্টরুম মিস্ট্রি সলভ করলাম 🥱 দেখি আর কদ্দূর যাইতে পারি...

সুকৌশলী টিমসহ কাশ্মির ভ্রমণে গেছেন পি কে বাসু, বার-আ্যট-ল। কাজের ক্লান্তি থেকে মুক্তি পেতেই এই ভ্রমণ। কিন্তু কাশ্মির বিমানবন্দরে নামতে-না-নামতেই পি কে বাসুকে অনুরোধ করা হলো একজন ধনাঢ্য কাশ্মিরি মহাদেওপ্রসাদের হত্যাকাণ্ডের তদন্তভার নিতে। বেশ জমে উঠলো কাহিনি। তবু শেষাংশ পছন্দ হলো না। কেমন যেন জোর করে তালি দিয়ে টুইস্টখানা দেওয়া হয়েছে।

সবকিছু মিলে 'উলের কাঁটা' উপভোগ্য।

Such a wonderful read! And this novel made me Narayan Sanyal fan. Guru, you are such a master of writing. Though this novel is adaptation of 'The Case of the Perjured Parrot' by Erle Stanley Gardner, I believe the way Narayan Sanyal wrote is the best! You will be in the story within 5-10 pages you started reading. And then, you can't fuck'in stop.

A murder has been taken place in a area where everyone usually goes for fishing trout in a specific time period of every year. The man, Mohadeo Khanna who is a business man & in the same time he is an ex M.P., also gone for fishing & found dead in a locked wooden cabin after about one week later of his murder takes place. The killer didn't leave any clue accept one. It's a talking parrot who is mimicking a very important phrase. But a murderer who didn't leave any clue, why did he/she left the parrot unharmed? Here enters the criminal side legal advisor Mr. P.K. Basu. Mr. Basu not only saves his client but also finds out the whole background story without leaving any pieces unmatched. But this time it would be tough because the criminal had done his/her homework with a great passion. So, let's start the cat & mouse race.

This is my first book of P.K. Basu & in my first one I became his fan. There would be lots of sentences if I want to share my feelings how I liked him. In a sentence, he is such a briliant guy whom you always want to be in your side. If he's with you, you would be safe in any case. I am not sure, how you'll feel, but I felt as I described. And regarding story, I believe you won't able to find murderer before Mr. Basu bangs.

Narayan Sanyal is one of my favourite authors. He knew how to write stories whether it's a non-fiction or a adaptation. Though I didn't read all of his works but I can guaranty you won't be disappointed after completing his novel. But it's matter of sorrow that, almost every reader knows Byomkesh Bakshi or Feluda, but very few knows P.K. Basu who deserves more attention.

এই গল্প আমার পড়া নয়, শোনা। ইউটিউবে হঠাৎই চোখে পরায় শুনতে শুরু করলাম। কাহিনী তেমন অসাধারণ না হলেও টাইমপাস হিসেবে বেশ ভালোই ছিল। অডিওবুক আমার চলে না, মনযোগ ধরে রাখতে ভীষণ কষ্ট হয়। কিন্ত কাজের মাঝখানে বই খুলে পড়া যায় না, তাই অডিওবুকের শরণাপন্ন হতে হল।

কারোর পড়া থাকলে একটা ব্যাপার ব্যাখ্যা করুন- মহাদেওপ্রসাদের লকারে টাকা থাকলে সে কেন ব্যাঙ্কে ফিক্সড ডিপোজিটের কাগজ জমা দিয়ে টাকা ধার করতে গেছিল এবং গঙ্গারামের কাছে ফিক্সড ডিপোজিটের কাগজ গুলো এলো কিভাবে?

মীরের অডিও বুকের মাধ্যমে শোনা। তবে অডিও বুক হিসেবে অনেক কমপ্লিকেটেড, অনেক তথ্য মনে রাখতে হয়েছে।
পড়তে পারলে আরো ভালো লাগতো।

প্রত্যাশা বোধহয় বেশিই ছিল। আততায়ী কে তা খুবই obvious মনে হচ্ছিল । লেখক বোধহয় নিজেই নিজের চরিত্রের মায়ায় জড়িয়ে পড়ছিলেন, কষ্ট দিতে পারছিলেন না। যাইহোক, ভালো, নিঃসন্দেহে। তবে বেশ কিছু "অসঙ্গতি" থেকেই যায়।

অধিকাংশ বাঙালি পাঠকের মতোই আমারও নারায়ণ সান্যালের লেখার সাথে প্রথম পরিচয় "বিশ্বাসঘাতক"এর হাত ধরে। এরপর যখন শিবপুরে ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং পড়তে শুরু করি, তখন তাঁর "বকুলতলা পি এল ক্যাম্প" বা "সত্যকাম" উপন্যাসগুলোয় সেই সময়ের শিবপুরের ছাত্রজীবনের ঘটনাগুলো তারিয়ে তারিয়ে উপভোগ করি। এরপর তাঁর লেখা একাধিক স্বাদের অনেকগুলো লেখা পড়েছি কিন্তু পড়বো পড়বো করেও পড়া হচ্ছিলো না "কাঁটায় কাঁটায়" সিরিজ। সিরিজের সাত নম্বর গল্প "উলের কাঁটা" দিয়ে সেই হাতেখড়ি হলো।

বাংলা সাহিত্যে এক ব্যোমকেশ ছাড়া ভালো প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক রহস্য উপন্যাস বেশি নেই। সৈয়দ মুস্তফা সিরাজ প্রথমে কর্নেল কাহিনি প্রাপ্তবয়স্কদের জন্যই লিখতে শুরু করেছিলেন বটে, কিন্তু নীরেন্দ্রনাথ চক্রবর্তীর অনুরোধে এবং আনন্দবাজার গোষ্ঠীর একটি ম্যাগাজিনে কিশোর সাহিত্যের চাহিদা মেটাতে কর্নেলকে তার পর থেকে ভোল বদলে পরিবেশন করতে বাধ্য হন। এই শূন্যস্থানে কি নারায়ণ সান্যালের "কাঁটায় কাঁটায়" সিরিজ খাপ খায়? একটা গল্পের নিরিখে বিচার করা যদিও অনুচিত, তবু আমার মনে হলো সমঝদার পাঠক বিবেচনা করে দেখতে পারেন। আমি ব্যক্তিগতভাবে ২০২৫এ পুরো সিরিজটা পড়ে ফেলা আমার একটা নতুন বছরের সংকল্প হিসেবে রাখলাম।

একমাত্র যেটা ভালো লাগেনি সেটা হলো রহস্য ঘনীভূত করতে গিয়ে কিছু জায়গায় অনর্থক জটিলতা সৃষ্টি করা হয়েছে বলে আমার মনে হয়েছে। শেষে যখন যবনিকা পড়ল, তখন সেগুলোর মধ্যে বেশ কিছু গল্পের মূল রহস্যে সমাধানে অপ্রয়োজনীয় ঠেকেছে।

' উলের কাঁটা ' — ব্যাপ্তিতে অন্যান্য 'কাঁটা'র থেকে এই কাঁটা দীর্ঘ, রহস্য গভীর, ঘনীভূত — জমজমাট৷ খানিক এরকুল পোয়ারোর পদাঙ্ক অনুসরণে ব্যারিস্টার পি.কে বসু তদন্তে দৌড়ঝাঁপ করেন কম, সুত্র নিয়ে ভাবনায় ডুবেন বেশি, আর সংগ্রহীত সূত্র কোর্টরুমে উপযুক্ত জেরার মাধ্যমে জনসম্মুখে প্রকাশ করেন। এর আগে পাঠকও নিরেট অন্ধকারে জমে থাকে৷ 'উলের কাঁটা'য় আগের সবকয়টার বিপরীত চিত্র ৷ দৌঁড়ঝাপ আর ভাবনা, দুইয়ের দেখা মিলে ঝটপট৷ সবমিলিয়ে অলমোস্ট 'দূর্দান্ত', কিন্তু ঠেকে গেলো দীর্ঘ তদন্ত পর্যায়ে মধ্যপথে ঝিমুনি দেওয়া গল্পের গতি, আর শেষ অঙ্কের পর্দা উন্মোচনে৷ এত দূর্বল এক্সপ্লেনেশন! আফসোস৷ আর, একদম অন্তিম টুইস্টখানা বিলকুল বাকওয়াস৷ (আর মিস্টার বসু একটা ভাইটাল 'ক্লু' মিস করে গেছেন!)

উফ্! দারুন একটা বই পড়লাম অনেকদিন পর... একেবারে মগজ ধোলাই যাকে বলে! যদিও আসল অপরাধীটা কে হতে পারে সেটা গল্পের মাঝামাঝিতেই বুঝে গিয়েছিলাম... (অসুস্থতার অজুহাতের অ্যালিবাই) তবুও লাস্টের টুইস্টটা অপ্রত্যাশিত ছিলো সেটার জন্যই পাঁচ তারকা। <3

ভালো। ঠিকঠাক।
অসাধারণ নয়। ফেলে দেবার মতো নয়। ভেবেছিলাম কোর্টরুম ড্রামা একটু বেশি হবে, যেহেতু পিকে বসু উকিল। কিন্তু এ দেখি পুরোদস্তুর গোয়েন্দা।
যাই হোক, হতাশ হইনি।
নারায়ণ স্যান্যাল প্রথম পড়লাম।
আবার পড়া যায়।

নারায়ণ সান্যালের অসম্ভব টানটান লেখনীর কারণে উপন্যাসটি একটানে পড়া হয়ে যায় ।

নারায়ণ সান্যালের লেখা প্রথম পড়লাম। পি.কে.বসুকে জানলাম। নতুন এক চরিত্রের সাথে পরিচয় হলো। ভালো লাগলো। এই সিরিজের বাকি বইগুলো পড়ার ইচ্ছা আছে।
