Let's start this review off with a big WOW! The Undead series is nothing short of amazing. I read the entire thing in a mere four days and was sad to see it end. It shocked me to find the series has yet to be picked up.

RR Haywood spins a tale of Mr. Howie, a night shift grocery worker as he fights off the wretched undead and meets some pretty awesome people along the way. Howie first teams up with Dave, a fellow co-worker at the store. Dave is a killing machine, methodical and devoid of social grace, it came as no shock when he revealed having Asbergers. His dry demeanor mixed with Howie's witty humor makes for some pretty deadpan comedy.

Joined by rookie soldiers Cookey, Blowers and Nick the comedy continues as they each dish out witty barbs. Each character is fully developed and believable. It's evident in the writing that a lot of thought went into creating them and the dynamic they bring to the group. Along the way, many more people are introduced. I won't go into their details, since that's the fun part about reading, but I will say they were each written just as well as the others.

Despite the never ending battle to survive, Howie and company continue in their mission to secure a safe haven for refugees. Destruction never ceasing to knock down their doors, the action is non-stop.

These aren't your garden variety zombies. They are a collective, pushed onward by an infection portrayed as an entity all it's own. The infection morphs and evolves in it's single minded goal to wipe out humanity. The undead aren't interested in eating its prey, it's only desire to spread the infection.

There are zombies of all shapes and sizes. Slow and lumbering, fast and vicious, thinking and plotting, seducing, vengeful...you name it, they've got it. The one thing they have in common is the red eyes. Lucky for the eyes or survivors would be completely fubar. The infection itself is original. It allows what could have ended up long and drawn out to keep me on the edge of my seat and never bored.

The Undead series is an ever changing, exciting work of fiction that will keep readers glued to the pages from start to finish. With it's terror, humor, unique story and likable characters, it is sure to be a huge hit with the masses.

Important note: This series is not for the feint of heart. In addition to the blood and guts, there is a lot of bad language (most of it pretty hilarious) and a few sexually explicit scenes that may be shocking to some. I appreciate the authors show of restraint as he did not harp on the uncomfortable moments. Oh, and spiders...lest we not forget the spiders. Haywoods description of poor Paula as she is stalked by an eight legged terror had me squirming in my seat and making noises of fear and disgust, followed promptly by a full body check and scan of my surroundings to ensure I, too, was not about to be attacked.

Day 9: The Isle.

Not much to say about this instalment. Not as bad as the last few in terms of language but overall, just a bit boring. I do think the series is going to get a little better from now though.

One problem I have with this series in general is that there are so many characters. I think I’ve got the current core characters down at least though, so that’s something. Someone needs to make me a spoiler-free character list!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I liked how new characters were introduced in this book and I'm hoping they'll be featuring even more, especially Lani. She seems to know what she's doing and has a good sense of humour.

I'm still surprised by how well Howie, Dave and their group manage to defeat any obstacle that comes their way. They're resilient and support each other well.

The pacing was fast and I was eager to find out if Darren got what he deserved or if he got away again.

I'm still curious about the origins of The Infection, especially as Darren was sometimes able to create "smart" zombies that could talk and rationalise.

Great series but lots of mistakes in first 10 books or so. Punctuation and spelling improved after that.
Re-reading the entire series again as I love them.
All about zombies controlled by a central intelligence who is learning all the time. A great read with loads of action and humor. Don't read if offended by bad language as there is rather a lot of it!

Painless

Im still giving this book 5 star. It had me for a second with "Talking" zombies. I was thinking, this book will be lame. A total surprise on me that it was well put together. It turned out to be well written and believable characters. On to the next one..

I'm only giving 3 stars, too the last two days, because of one character, that one character is waaay to vulgar for my taste, I did not like reading from that perspective, hope it won't be too much more like that.

This is the book that made me give up on the series. Your mileage may vary, but I just don't like the characters and writing enough to press on.

THis is the book that make me give up the series... too boring and after all the fight you can kill darren just with a a bullet from afar. No just no. It is not doable. I can't read another page.

Another whirlwind of a Day! Mr. Haywood writes the most hateful villains and the most wonderful humour. I am growling one minute, fist pumping the next..a few pages later there are tears and then, in amongst it, there is laugh out loud moments...I am in awe. I feel like I am learning from a master here!

Quick thoughts:Marcy...manipulative beep!
Zombie Nuns?!
I shall NEVER look at the IOW the same way!!
Dave just 'hanging out' waiting for the team to stop faffing!
I love Dave
New/old team mates are great additions
Additional items for the Zompoc:
Drain pipes
Lucozade
MILK (because it was like Xmas!!)

Cannot wait to see where Day 10 leads!
I'm still averaging a Day per 24 hour period (not sure how long I'll keep that up but the precedent/challenge has been set

This review relates to the audiobook, part 9, not day 9. This was day 14, I think.

Great episode, the team are separated from each other, and although the story doesn't advance a great deal, we get a deeper look at the team and how they work together. One of my favourites in the series.
