First Lizzie Thompson's cat disappears. Then Lizzie herself. Ms Wiz has a mission: to find the missing pair. Who will be the next to go missing? PC Boote hopes it will be Ms Wiz. This is the third title in the Ms Wiz series.
Terence Blacker wanted to be a jockey when he grew and up. In fact, he could ride before he could walk, and his childhood hero was the great steeplechaser Mill House (a horse). He lives in Norfolk, England.
This book in the Ms. Wiz series has our favorite magical lady turning kids into cats to stop a Cruella DeVille-type catnapping ring from making all kinds of furry fashion from local pets. It definitely feels like you've heard the story before, but that's not often a problem for young readers.
---- I picked up several of this Ms. Wiz series to share with my students on the class Kindle and enjoyed them for the most part. They all remind me a little bit of a British cross between Miss Frizzle and just a touch of Miss Nelson (of the "Miss Nelson is Missing" fame). Like Miss Friz, Ms. Wiz shows up and turns the world of her favorite kids upside down with magical mystery, but without the educational, science-y bit.
This series is very British and includes many British-English spellings and turns of phrase that may not be immediately accessible to American children, but the nice thing about reading on the Kindle is the instant dictionary look-up feature. I learned a thing or two about British spelling along the way, myself. Who knows? Diving into this series might actually breed some budding Anglophiles.
Work review: Like a less-imaginative combination of Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, 101 Dalmatians and Roald Dahl, this is the fourth book in British series about magical Ms. Wiz and the schoolchildren who adore her. Other adults are generally tyrants or buffoons while Ms. Wiz’s sweetness and magic endear her to children. In this case the child in question is Lizzie, whose cat has gone missing. After some interesting scenes exploring Ms. Wiz’s current disguise (as a bag lady living in a broken-down car), the plot veers completely into 101 Dalmatians territory complete with an audacious, fur-loving female villain, a pair of inept catnappers, and a pair of equally inept policemen who put Ms. Wiz in jail. With an episodic plot, little character development, and a happy ending that is never really in doubt, this confection doesn’t have much to sink your teeth into. It’s a fun read and the goofy, scratchy Tony Ross illustrations could easily pass for Quentin Blake, but unless we’re getting requests I think we can safely skip it.
Pet cats are disappearing all over Lizzie Thompson’s town, and she’s sure that someone is up to no good. Lizzie’s own beloved cat Waif has suddenly gone missing too, and she is beside herself with worry. Luckily (or is it?), her friend Ms. Wiz is back to lend a magical hand and thwart the cat burglars, transforming Lizzie into a cat to try and infiltrate the burglars’ lair.
Just as Lizzie is about to save the day and lead her cat friends to safety, the situation takes a terrible turn—Ms. Wiz gets arrested by a suspicious police man! How can the witch save the day when she’s behind bars? Will she be able to turn Lizzie back before she and the kitties are turned into fur gloves? Fans of the Ms. Wiz series will enjoy finding out what happens to their favorite characters in this fun magical romp. Illustrations by Tony Ross add whimsy to the tale and will remind readers of Roald Dahl.

Pokoknya ajaib deh...
