Who is Aidan Callaghan? Mary Ellen James is intent on uncovering the truth about the mysterious man. But as she soon finds out, some things are best left buried in the past.
Originally published in an Anthology called Entangled with Michelle Diener, Cynthia Eden, Jennifer Estep, Misty Evans, Nancy Haddock, Liz Kreger, Dale Mayer, Michelle Miles, and Edie Ramer, plus a novella by Allison Brennan.
As a child, thoughts of far-off places and adventure consistently kept Lori up late at night. After graduating high school, she came to the conclusion that there was no better way to seek adventure and nourish her love of history than to become an archaeologist. She went on to receive a degree in anthropology, but digging in the dirt during humid Midwestern summers wasn’t exactly as fun as she thought it would be.
Instead, she went to work in an air conditioned museum where she spent her days surrounded by creepy Victorian animal mounts. Still, she wasn’t satisfied.
Deciding the people in her imagination were slightly more exciting than the dead things in a museum basement, she set out to write her first romance novel. That book was soundly rejected. As was the next. Years went by and she began to wonder if she’d ever see her dream fulfilled. Until one day she came up with an idea for a book that brought together her love of history and adventure: a book now titled Wild Heart. Since Wild Heart's release, Lori has written Historical Romance, Contemporary Paranormal Romance and Young Adult.
Lori currently resides in the Southern U.S., where she juggles her time between a husband, a son, a golden retriever, a cat and the many, many people in her imagination.
I have read many books by Lori Brighton and I am never disappointed. This book is no exception. It is well written.
Mary Ellen is about to be introduced to the ton in London for the coming season. She was poor for so many years until her sister married well. She is determined to marry a rich & titled man so that she will never experience poverty ever again. Then Aiden walks into her life and she is determined to ignore him as he does not make her list of eligible men. Aiden also has a big secret.
I really enjoyed this book. The only thing is that it is so short. I really would have liked to this to be longer. The book is well worth the read though.
I really liked this story. I hadn't read book one, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a historical paranormal romance. I enjoyed mainly because of the chemistry between Aidan and Mary Ellen, but also because it happened to have a little intrigue mixed in with the romance.
I will definitely be looking forward, or should I say backward, to reading the first book and any subsequent books in this series.
I quite enjoy any book by Lori Brighton. It's hard for me to find authors that write in the time periods she does without sounding stupid. I've yet to dislike any of her books I've read so far, and this is no exception.
The last historical romance novel I read was Diana Gabaldon's "Highlander". And I must shamefully admit that I did not finish it... Therefore I chose a shorter one this time! Because nothing is as frustrating as having to leave a book of epic proportions unfinished, with all it's sequels already purchased in paperback. OK, I dust them off from time to time and they look good on my bookshelf... But back to this one... I really enjoyed it! Likeable characters and quite a lot of suspense despite its shortness. It has a paranormal element which I did not knew beforehand and which pleasantly surprised me. And so having read it, feels like having killed two birds with one stone... Because J.R. Ward's "Black Dagger" saga is another one I cannot bring myself to finish...
Mary Ellen James wants to marry a man who can take care of her. She wants someone with a title and money. Maybe then the people around them would stop treating them so badly. And then Aidan Callaghan shows up. Just who is this mysterious man? She doesn’t want to be intrigued by him but she is. Now what will she do when she finds out some things about the mysterious Mr. Callaghan?
This was an amazing Novella. I can not wait till more of this series is out! Mary Ellen cracks me up and Aidan seems plum scrumptious. If you like historical romances…AND Paranormal Romances, this book is for you! I highly recommend it to anyone though! Thank you Lori for a great read!
I took a risk on this book since it was free on Barnes & Noble and by an author I had never read before. Overall, I think it was exactly what it was trying to be - an enjoyable way to pass a few hours. The characters are familiar (if a little annoyingly so), the plot is predictably rushed (it is a novella, after all), and the writing isn't challenging. It is brain candy and meant to be enjoyed for what it is.
For what is was...a short story...it held my attention (although I felt the book started somewhere in the middle of the story.) I would be intrigued to learn more about the relations between species and what is really going on...certain events left me asking questions about the world.
This series could potentially be very good...or just a way to make fictional characters hook up with some background anxiety.
I read the first book, and stumbled across this one. It's a novella, so it's short, which I actually thought was perfect for this storyline. As much as I liked the first book, I kept thinking if it was a little shorter it'd be just as good. Anyways, this was a nice continuation of the James girls with this being about Mary Ellen.
It started out alright, but there are too many illogical or annoying things. E.g. the heroine is recognized instantly at a masked ball and wonders why. She then realizes it's because she's the only one with red hair, whereupon she asks the hero why he recognized her. And straight after she also asks her sister. Things like that annoy me. Also, the ending is rushed and therefore a bit weird.
I usually don't like to read about werewolves and vampires in romance novels but I rather enjoyed this story. It wasn't heavy on the vampire angle so that pleased me. The writing was well done as was the pacing. Aidan.....I want one of my own.
I chose "really liked it" because I'm interested in reading more of this series due to this novella. It is not as well written as Lydia Dare books nor did it compare to the MacNachton series of vampire novellas by Hannah Howell which are full meal novellas. Worth reading though.
