A quartet of popular romance authors present four erotic novellas of love and passion in an anthology that includes ''For Maggie's Sake'' by Lora Leigh, Susan Donovan's ''Bed and Breakfast,'' ''Siren's Call'' by Lori Wilde, and Carrie Alexander's ''His Body Electric."
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.
Lora Leigh is a New York Times bestselling author of erotic romance novels. Leigh started publishing with electronic publisher Ellora's Cave in 2003. Leigh's longest-running series is The Breeds. She won the 2009 RT Award for erotica. Leigh was born in Ohio and raised in Martin County, Kentucky, US.
*** NOTE: This rating is for Lora Leigh's FOR MAGGIE'S SAKE only! ***
This was a nice surprise. I disliked the 1st 2 stories in LL's Tempting SEALs series, so I didn't have high expectations about this 3rd installment. But I wanted to give it a try anyway, because I'd been told that the series got better as it progressed. Well, I'm glad I did. This was a very enjoyable quick read, and I liked both Joe and Maggie. He was "the perfect alpha": protective and dominant, but not agressive and overbearing. So different from his predecessors Reno (from 'Reno's Chance') and Clint the Neanderthal (from 'Dangerous Games'), ugh. I guess I'll have to keep reading this series. ;)
It is rare that I read an anthology and like all of the stories. Usually there is at least one that I dislike, or couldn't get into. Happily this was not the case when I read this book.
His Body Electric by Carrie Alexander
Karen bought the old house in the country to get away. Tired of the hustle and bustle of the big city, she want to work on her art and fix up her run down farmhouse.
Gabe is afraid of human contact, (I won't get into why..gotta read it for yourself) and has separated himself from others for their safety. This story is about two loney people who come together one stormy night. It is a really good fast paced story that has alot of chemistry and humor between Karen and Gabe.
Bed and Breakfast by Susan Donovan
I loved this story. It was really funny! Plus, the relationship between the characters sizzled off the pages! Annie is having a bad 6 months. After one distaster after another she is persuaded to go to a retreat to help her relax and find her "center". Not really wanting to go she finds herself stranded at this cabin on the wrong week with a health-nut guru...gosh, what she wouldn't give for a cup a coffee, a big juicy steak! All he has is Decafe and Barcley soup! Ugh! At least he is funny and very easy on the eyes.
Jorey is runs a retreat for those who want to get back to nature and the natural way of things. He is surprised when Annie appears on his doorstep a month late for the retreat, but offers her a stay at his cabin. Her sarcasm and humor soon charms him...now if only he could change the negative aura of colors that surround her. Trust me this was a really humorous story. The way both Annie and Jorey grew together was lovely and very fun to watch. I only wish it could have been a longer book...
For Maggie's Sake by Lora Leigh
This was the most intense story of the book. Lora never lets us down with her characters and the sexual chemistry that arises between them.
Maggie Samuels is in trouble. Her recently deceased husband had some shady dealings, and now the police don't believe she isn't involved. Coming from a love-less marriage, she is surprised when an old flame comes to her rescue.
Joe Merino knows she is innocent. As angry as he is at Maggie for marrying his best friend, he swears to protect her and force her to see his true feelings for her.
As I said, this story was intense for a short story. I don't want to give too much away, but know that it is well worth the read!
Siren's Call by Lori Wilde
This story reminded me of the movie Fools Gold. I could see Matthew McConaughey being the hero in this story and Kate Hudson doing everything in her power to resist him.
Duncan is a treasure hunter. One of the best scuba divers in the business, he has made a name for himself...especially with the ladies. He never forgets his first love and best friend. When he hears from her grandfather that she is close to being engaged to another comes up with a scheme to win her back.
Annie is wary when she sees Duncan walk into her Grandfather's scuba shop. Knowing he is up to no good, she keeps reminding herself she is only here temporarily until her Grandfather gets back on his feet. Being scorned by Duncan 4 years ago she keeps having to remind herself she is ready to go back to her high maintenance boyfriend and stressful job, that is until Duncan gives her an offer she can't refuse.
I really cared about these two. The big misunderstanding kept them apart, but the love, friendship and sexual chemistry draws them together.
Wow! Now I understand what all of the fuss over this book was about. Laura was right in saying it deserves more than 5 stars!
I think I personally enjoyed Susan Donovan's story the most, partly because I have never read anything by this author before. For quite some time I've been looking for an author who has a witty writing style that can tickle my funny bone, but yet can still pull off the erotica theme. The dialogue between Jorey and Kate was entertaining and funny and very believable. The descriptions of Jorey's dark, curly hair, and those green pajama pants stuck him under the "hunkalicious" category in my mind. = ) (Lucky girl that I am, I am married to a hunky man with dark, curly hair, so it was easy to read this one.) I will definitely be looking up Ms. Donovan's backlist now.
Daisiemae had mentioned that Siren's Call was very similar to Fool's Gold. If I didn't know any better, I would think that Siren's Call was a direct rip-off of Fool's Gold! (But I'm pretty sure the book came out long before the movie.) While I prefer to watch Matthew McConaughey running around on screen without a shirt (what women with a working ovary wouldn't?), I did enjoy this story too.
Thank you, everyone, for the great recommendation. = )
Again, I only read the Tempting SEAL book by Lora Leigh in this anthology but I really liked it a lot!
The chemistry was sizzling between Joe and Maggie. There is a lot of drama and angst, but the heroine wasnt TSTL! I liked that ;) The intense drama only added to my enjoyment of the story, and in true Lora Leigh fashion, I was not disappointed!
This is a great series and Im looking forward to the next story!
Word on the street is that Mary Lou Retton LOVES Lora Leigh books.
I myself do not. (That's unfair, really, since I have never read one, but the whole heat seeking moisture missile into warm love valley seems like it would get old after a bit.)
This was on display right as you walk in the front door of the library. I thought, "The library owns erotic romance? Really???" So of course, I had to pick it up. Unfortunately, it's more romance novel than erotica.
Overall, I guess I enjoyed this book. There were some hot scenes, and I became interested in what would happen to two of the four couples in the the book. The writing was bad, though, and the storylines were blazingly stupid. A dude gets struck by lightning and becomes permanently electrified, complete with electric penis? Seriously? Sigh.
Even worse than that, though, is the underlying assumptions behind some of these stories. Guy X didn't have sex for three years because he loved only Chick Y, and even though she was married, he couldn't love another. Chick Y couldn't have really loved her husband, because Guy X was the love of her life and always had been. Guy Z had been pining for Chick Q ever since they grew up together, but he never felt worthy of her until now... so he cooks up an elaborate and stupid deception to trick her into trusting him, and then is surprised when she gets mad when she finds out. But of course, once he explains, then all is well, because they're meant to be together and nobody ever made her feel like he does. Yadda yadda yadda. I can't believe I used to read crap like this all the time. No wonder I had such a messed up view of how relationships work.
The four stories in this anthology could be worthy of more than 3 stars if there were more to the stories themselves. Maybe I'm too picky, but having read longer stories by Lora Leigh and Lori Wilde, I'm frustrated when the conflict is all but non-existent and the hasty conclusion arrives... it's like having sex with a self-absorbed lover. Leaves me wanting more.
I picked up this book for the Lora Leigh story, For Maggie's Sake (Tempting SEALs Book 3). I feel sorry for any reader who has not already read Dangerous Games. Without that book to provide the full back story, For Maggie's Sake won't leave you with a very high opinion of Lora Leigh as a storyteller.
Of the four stories, I found Carrie Alexander's His Body Electric to have the most interesting storyline and a worthwhile way to spend an hour or so. Susan Donovan's Bed and Breakfast was also very good. These two probably merit 4 stars but still, I just wish there was more of them.
Author Lora Leigh is in her element here for erotic romantic suspense. The recently widowed heroine is accused of the misdeeds of her husband, and her first boyfriend and DEA agent comes to her rescue. There's convoluted melodrama that her dead husband was whacked out and was motivated almost entirely by jealously of the wife's first boyfriend, with whom he pretended a best friend relationship. Very Jerry Springer. The smex, however, was smoking, as was the emotional connection for such a shorter story. If you're a Lora Leigh fan, this is a must read.
A short story where Maggie needs protection and Joe is there for her. The one who got away and the disaster that followed on the break up. Quick read, endearing people and fluffy smut.
Sexy! Each book is following a formula but Lora Leigh writes each character so uniquely they are all very entertaining and HOT HOT HOT with intriguing stories that have you rooting for all the MC's all the way through, plus the stories build on each other and that just makes them even more engaging.
I reread this this week, because I had fond memories of it from the first time I read it several years ago. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The number of red flags and terrifying possessiveness of the guys was really difficult to get past.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The reason I read this book was for the story "For Maggie's Sake" by Lora Leigh which is the 3rd story in her "Tempting Seals" series. But I read all four of the stories in this anthology. I really liked Lora's story but I enjoyed the others in this book.
In Lora Leigh's FOR MAGGIE'S SAKE, Maggie Chavez from Leigh's sexy Navy SEALs series is in protective custody with a member of her former lover's SEALs team. Joe, her ex-lover, thinks Maggie is hiding information from him about a powerful drug lord and the deaths of some SEALs. He intends to seduce her and get the information before she can sell it back to the drug cartel. But when a member of the notorious crime family captures Maggie and holds her hostage at gunpoint, Joe realizes how wrong he is, and only he can save her life. I really enjoy this one but I'm really enjoying all the books in this series so far.
In Susan Donovan's BED AND BREAKFAST, a stressed-out corporate dynamo with designer boots and a bad attitude is sent to the New Mexico mountains to "get centered" or not come back to Los Angeles. She arrives at the rustic Windwalker Lodge north of Santa Fe, only to find the place in the middle of a renovation and the hunky owner in a pair of lounge pants with no shirt and no idea she was coming. She plans to leave on the first available shuttle the next morning, but one of the area's notorious rains washes out the bridge, and she's stuck. Though resistant at first, she eventually lets the beautiful setting and the extraordinary man give her a new perspective on life, love, and especially sex. I like this one pretty good and I believe this might be the first story by this author I have read.
In Lori Wilde's SIREN'S CALL, Annie Grave is back in her hometown, St. Augustine, looking after her grandfather's dive shop as he lies bedridden with a broken hip. Though she is a Harvard MBA with a high-powered finance job in Manhattan and a boyfriend on the brink of proposing marriage, she's never forgotten her first love, sun-bronzed dive instructor Duncan Stewart--or the day years earlier when she lost her virginity to him and he told her it was just a fling. But what she doesn't know is that Duncan has regretted that decision every day since. Afraid of not being able to hold onto a smart, sexy, beautiful woman like Annie, he pushed her away and ran away from St. Augustine. But now she's back, and so is he, and he's cooked up a plan to win her back. After all, what girl could resist the lure of buried treasure, and a hot, handsome Scotsman to guide her on the hunt? This one was good and I have read other stories by this author and will be reading more by Lori Wilde.
In Carrie Alexander's HIS BODY ELECTRIC, an aloof stranger arrives at Karen Jaffe's farmhouse seeking shelter at the height of a violent lightning storm. Strange events follow--the power goes out, every clock stops, sparks fly from the visitor's fingertips. Alone in the dark with him, Karen uses her skills as a phone sex operator to seduce the mystery man, uncovering the secrets and erotic pleasures of HIS BODY ELECTRIC. I really like this one but it would had been better with a longer story.. I'm not sure but I think this is the first time with this author?
For Maggie's Sake I give it an A+. I actually bought this book for this story. It tells what happened to Maggie who was a minor character in another Leigh book.
Heroine was the widow of a dirty DEA agent. His best friend and her first lover has to protect her from a gang of hired killers who along with the authorities, believe Maggie knows where her dead husband left some crucial evidence.
It ties up loose ends from the novel nicely, and has an AMAZING amount of emotion in the story. Maggie's spouse just died. Everyone thinks she was dirty including her guard/old lover Joe. Joe won't leave her alone in the mountain hideaway, even going so far as to insist on sleeping with her for protection. And to wear her down in case she really does know where the evidence is hidden. Leigh did a great job on this story and it contains zero continunity errors.
For this novelette/story alone, the book is worth purchasing.
Bed and Breakfast Give it a B. Gal shows up at a lodge in the middle of nowhere just in time for the flash flood to seal the resort away by washing out the bridge. She has the wrong date and the only person at the resort is the caretaker. He helps erase her from her super stressed state and they fall for each other. I spent a summer out in Santa Fe, and tha author does a great job describing the beauty and allure of the land.
Siren's Call I give it a C+. Woman's first love shows up with an elaborate scheme to win her heart again. He's a world famous salvage diver, she's not willing to let her heart be broken again. Eventually his deceit lands them on a deserted island. He engineers a `romantic' weekend then she finds it was all a scam. She does fall hard for the liar, and some physically impossible amore scenes take place. Can you tell I don't like him or his methods of seduction?
His Body Electric I give it a D. Woman has designs on a stranger she met in her yard in the middle of a lightening storm. He finds shelter in her home and she jumps his bones. He has some mysterious electrical problem, where everything he touches electrifies. I didn't like any of the characters in this story.
This story picks up just weeks after the ending of Dangerous Games. Maggie Samuels has been implicated by her dead husband, Grant Samuels, into the drug deals that he was killed over. Maggie is the daughter of a newspaper man and she loves Joe Merino. She left him because she didn't think that Joe would ever love her. She didn't realize that Grant just married her as revenge against Joe. Maggie is a smart woman that just wants a husband and family. She wants to help with finding what Grant left behind but she just can't remember anything.
Joe Merino is devastated that Grant betrayed him. Joe thought they were friends. Now he wants to protect Maggie from the Fuentes family. She has a price on her head which he can only make go away when the evidence that Grant hid is found and the Fuentes are put out of business. Joe is an honorable, intelligent man that is dictated to his job. He wants and needs to protect the innocent against the criminals that prey on them. He has always loved Maggie and now that Maggie is single he is determined to have her in his life forever.
As always this story is too short. It is well written and the sex scenes are hotter than fire. While this story is part of the series it could probably be read by itself. It is nice to see something good happening to Joe. He is a good man and he deserves to have a happily ever after. Maggie is a good woman and after the train wreck of a marriage to Grant she also deserve to find someone that will love and cherish her. This is a quick read and a nice addition to the series.
Wow! Some better than I expected, others not so hot. I'm still happy with the overall project.
Though Lora Leigh's story is a prequel to her Seals series, it is only marginally linked and could serve as a stand-alone. The series does not need this to be complete. On its own, it is a great tale with characters whose motivations you get to know.
One theme I noticed in two of these stories is a history of the guy messing up the relationship in its early stages when things begin to matter, he gets scared and runs, hurting the gal. In the real world that would be the end of it, write the jerk off as a learning opportunity and never cross his path again. Then, years later when he realizes he's thrown away what could have been the real thing, his regret is useless.
The other two stories deal with strangers meeting in a rainstorm. As these are steamy romance stories, they overcome their reluctance to get it on with the stranger and succumb to the fantastic chemistry. What a risky way to find the love of one's life. I did not find these stories as enjoyable as the other two.
I'll be re-reading the Lora Leigh story again, the others were not memorable.
This is the story that follows directly after Dangerous Games. Joe, our tortured DEA boss finally faces his demons and the woman he's loved since she walked away from him and married Grant. (Save that Grant did manipulate her into the marriage). It's a pretty good story. Though I have the same problem with this as I did the last book. Too much sex and too silly a conflict between the two main characters.
My pet-piv with romance has always been a irritating and childish female character, and at time Maggie is VERY childish. Not only was the reason why she left Joe 2 and a half years ago ridiculous, her consistent insecurity after Joe has given her no reason to doubt his trust and love just makes me roll my eyes.
Not sure if I want to continue on with this series because of this author's pattern of writing....but I am curious about Kell and Ian's story. Ian because he and his lady-love appears in Wild Card (Nate's story in her Elite Ops Series).
All the stories in this anthology are entertaining, but by far the best one is For Maggies Sake and so my rating is mainly driven by that one.
As always, Lora Leigh's story is filled with sexual tension, passion and characters that you really want to see together. Joe is another dominating alpha male lead who will increase your pulse and make your heart melt.
Maggie is a little contradictory for me. She was definitely likeble, but I have to say that I didn't really understand the why they split up in the first place. It just didn't seem enough in my mind for them both to completely walk away from each other. Perhaps the characters were not rounded enough, or just not clear enough for me to understand entirely what their motivations were.
That aside, I still enjoyed the story and I loved the emotion. I could really feel both of their sadness over the time they had lost being apart and I was glad when they got their HEA.
This is anthology. Hence, my review will be total brief. First of all, I felt really bad for Joe because he treated his best friend (Grant) as a brother but dude betrayed him, he's a low profile, modest (loved him for that) but his best friend envied him thus led to hatred and treacherous, he fell in love with his best friend's wife a.k.a. Maggie (even before the girl got married) but he was dumb for not taking his chance to love her in the first place.
Anyway, right now -- he has her and that's good.
As for heroine, all I want to say is she's stupid. Got annoyed with her. In my opinion, people who refuse to hear explanation and get pissed over something ridiculous are people exactly not worth my time. I mean, why bother to hang longer for explanation sort if in the end, shit get back to you, eh?
Overall, I enjoyed the romance and some hot scenes were fine.
