Ellie is shocked and confused when her owners leave her at the animal shelter. Feeling abandoned and unloved, Ellie spends her days staring vacantly through the gate of her pen. Ellie’s life changes when she is finally adopted by a compassionate woman named Anne. Ellie and Anne form an unbreakable bond of love and friendship. A thunderstorm drives Toby, a young frightened kitten, to Anne’s porch. Anne and Ellie immediately welcome him into their family. One night, they hear an emergency broadcast announcement that a little girl is missing in the woods near their home. Anne, Ellie, and Toby join in the search to find her, and an incredible rescue team is formed. The team will be called upon again when a tornado tears through their town. Will they find any survivors?

First a small disclaimer: I got this book because it was going through a free promotion at the time… it had great reviews and I thought, why not? Since it already had so many positive reviews, it’s possible that I went into it biased, which I have to be honest about.
Also… a warning: spoilers ahead. Don’t read this review if you don’t want spoilers.
Pros:
1. It’s wholesome. I don’t remember the last time I read something this wholesome, where the animals (despite sometimes being abandoned and/or abused) are trusting. The neighbors and friends and total strangers are trusting and sincere and… salt-of-the-earth-good.
2. It has cute protagonists — a cuddly, smiley dog and a little search-and-rescue companion kitten? Totally cute main characters that will make you want to go to your pet (or get a pet) to cuddle up against.
3. I liked the whole animals-as-main-characters thing. Cons:
1. It just felt so… slow. Not slow in terms of nothing’s-happening, but because the way everything’s told just feels… slow. Even when things are happening (mild spoilers: they find a kitten, they rescue a girl, etc)
2. There’s almost NO tension. Despite the fact that it starts on a downer (and it turns out that a couple of the protagonists have interesting/sad backstories) it quickly becomes apparent that this is a feel-good book… almost too-feel-good. Everyone cat, every person, every THING that might at one point be in danger… gets saved. More than just saved, it gets the happiest version of the happy ending. After a while, it stops mattering that there are dangers (tornados, lost girls, etc) you just know it’s all going to work out. Like I said… wholesome… but almost TOO wholesome, to the point that there’s no dramatic tension, despite the fact that there’s, you know, tornadoes!
3. Honestly, despite the fact that this is mostly well-written, I had trouble staying interested, and also found it difficult to finish the book…
What I liked: This is a book that should be on every child’s bookshelf. In it, a child can explore some tough and scary situations inside the safe medium of a story, and her parents can be certain the story tells her the right things. In these pages, a couple of abandoned animals find their way to Anne, whose heart is as big as the world. Sometimes things are hard, but this adoptive family learns to stick together, and their love truly saves the day. (And best of all, my son loves this story.)
What I didn’t like: Not one thing.
In sum: Buy this for your kids - today. It’s a must-have. And if you read my reviews, you know I almost never say that.
I downloaded this as a Kindle freebie not realizing it was aimed at younger readers. Not that there's anything wrong with that -- I enjoy kids' books as much as adult books. And honestly, this was a cute read. Nothing earth-shattering or ground-breaking, but still a cute story about two animals who bond with one another and their owner and set out to help people.
Ellie is a collie who can't understand why she was left at the animal shelter by her owners... but gets a second chance when a woman named Anne adopts her. Later, a frightened cat named Toby turns up on their porch during a thunderstorm, and becomes a member of their family as well. Ellie and Toby form a close bond with one another and with Anne... and end up becoming valuable members of their community. They assist in finding a lost little girl and helping Anne after an accident... but when a tornado sweeps through their town their skills will be put to the ultimate test.
This is a fairly simple book, its writing style serviceable but not fantastic. And that's okay. It works for the story, carries it along at a decent pace, and reads smoothly. The story feels somewhat episodic, as if it were two or three children's picture books that were put together and padded out to chapter-book length, but it's still a cute read.
The human characters in this book are rather flat, but the animal characters help it shine. Ellie and Toby make a fantastic pair and their personalities bounce well off each other. And other dogs -- the terrifying-looking but gentle Tank and the egotistical Buck -- have their own personalities. How much adults appreciate this book will probably depend on how well they like books with talking animals in them, but I don't mind this.
The Rescue Team is a cute read for younger readers, and was a nice palate cleanser for me after some darker reads.
Another cute, light and easily read tale of a dog and a cat who find a home and then get involved with their owner in search and rescue. I obviously didn't read the book preview on this one because it startled me when the dog and cat started "talking" to each other. Once I dismissed the "silliness" of it all and pretended that I was ten years old again, I thoroughly enjoyed the story of their adventures!
Another very cute and wonderful story of two pets who help rescue other persons in time of disaster. I really enjoyed the way the pets communicated with each other. If you love animals you will love all of Billi Tiner's books about animal friendships. Gave this book 5 stars because it was great!
No idea why I ever downloaded this book, other than maybe because it was free! Definitely not a book that I would have picked off the shelf otherwise! But, doggone it (no pun intended!) if it didn't pull me in. A cute little read that I enjoyed -- even though I can't figure out why!
My eight-year-old son enjoyed the story. Pretty straightforward, with fun characters. The book wasn't edited very well however, as we found a number of spelling and grammatical errors.
I have been reading and rereading this book since I was little. EVERY SINGLE TIME it melted my heart. This is a beautiful book and it can and should be read by all ages.
“The Rescue Team” by Dr. Billi Tiner is a wonderful adventure featuring Ellie the dog, Toby the cat, and Anne, their human companion. Playing an important secondary role are Brent the fireman, and his dog Tank, reportedly one of the ugliest and scariest looking sweethearts you’ll ever encounter. Anne rescues Ellie from the local animal shelter, and they hit it off instantly. Not long after, during a powerful thunderstorm, Ellie sees two eyes staring in the window during a lightning strike, and rushes to the door. When Anne opens the door, a grey streak squirts past them into the house; thus enters Toby. The animals worry when Anne isn’t home on time, and soon discover her car upside down in a ditch. They lick and purr and bark until she comes to, and calls for help. Soon after rescuing Anne, the three of them, with Brent and Tank, rescue little Lisa, a small child who got lost in the woods. Then, in the aftermath of a devastating tornado, the team once again rescues survivors; first, a lady buried under the rubble of her three story house, then a young teenager, Luke, living in an abandoned building. So, now that Brent and Anne and all the animals, and young Luke are getting along so well, what do you suppose will happen next?
This was a very uplifting story, and one that will put a smile on the face of the grumpiest guy you know (my kids would say that’s me). I will admit the first few pages put a lump in my throat, as Ellie’s original owners took her to the animal shelter because they didn’t want to be bothered with her anymore. But once Anne adopted her, this quickly became a very happy, feel-good tale (no pun intended). When I was younger, I did not like it when authors would anthropomorphize animals. But I guess I’ve mellowed out, after having recently lost my dog after 16-1/2 years. She was more human than a lot of humans I know. But I digress…. I very much recommend this wonderful little story for anyone old enough to read. I give it 5 barks!
Children's Book reading level about 3rd/4th grade and up. This is the story of a dog, Ellie and a cat, Toby and their human, Anne. Anne rescues Ellie from a shelter and Toby joins them by finding his way to their porch in a thunderstorm. Both pets have been abandoned by previous owners. The two pets become fast friends and have many excellent adventures with their human companions and other animal friends rescuing both humans and animals who are lost or trapped. They act like normal animals except are personified in their ability to completely understand the humans and to communicate with one another. The only downside to the book and the main reason I only gave it 3 stars is at one point the team rescues a 13 y/o boy who seems to be abandoned by his parents in the same way the pets were abandoned by their previous owners. In response to the news that the authorities couldn't locate his parents, he appears relieved and his reply is, "They were never around much anyway." Really?! that's all the emotion he has? Even for a kids book this unbelievable. This is a VERY small part of the story and I realize it's a heavy theme for a kid story so that it was kind of just glossed over. Still I felt there was a definite parallel drawn between irresponsible pet owners and bad parents and that abandoning a cat on the side of the road is as bad as dumping your 13 year old son and skipping town. I don't advocate either action but I don't think they can be equated. This story would have been far better had this part been left out or some other narrative invented to explain this boy's plight. I can only hope that it was not the author's intent to draw such a parallel, but in her effort to keep it simple she unwittingly did so. I'd let my kids read this, but we'd have a discussion about the values depicted and the power of story to influence our thinking. Otherwise this was a thoroughly enjoyable book.
"The Rescue Team" by Billi Tiner tells the story of Ellie, a border collie, who does not have a home. Ellie didn't understand why one day her original owners brought her to the pound and left her there. She had been sitting in a kennel for a few weeks, when a lovely person named Anne came along. Anne became Ellie's new owner. Ellie enjoys her new life with Anne when one day she meets a small cat. Anne takes him in as her own, and eventually, he is adopted, since he was a stray, abandoned on the side of the road in a cardboard box. He is named Toby, and he and Ellie become the best of friends.
"The Rescue Team" follows Ellie and Toby as they become part of a search and rescue team with Anne. Their second, but biggest search and rescue mission comes upon them when they have to find a little girl who is lost in the woods. It is getting very dark, and it beginning to storm. With Anne injured, Ellie and Toby are forced to find this lost girl themselves, and are running out of time to find her. They are a strong team, but this will this mission push them to their limits?
Rating: 4 stars. I really liked this book, and it was great to have it be mainly from the perspective of an animal. Errors: I did notice some errors, which will be listed below...
[location 828 (59%)] "Ellie glanced away from the Joneses..." [location 847 (60%)] "When they arrived, the Joneses ran out..." [location 852 (61%)] "...Anne visited with the Joneses..."
-All of the underlines words were grammatical errors. The family's name in the book is the 'Jones'. The 3 underlined words above should have been written: Jones', not Joneses.
[location 1332 (95%)] ""How're you going to do that?"..."
-Umm...I don't recall ever hearing of the word, how're...interesting, but I don't believe it is correct.
I accidentally read this book today. I was just skimming through the first bit to see if I could recommend it to my mom for the children she keeps, and instead read the entire thing!
First off, it is written with children in mind, but I swear the author wrote romance at one point... What children's book includes this:
“I promise,” said Anne, stepping into Brent’s embrace.
There's a bit of a love story and family theme in the background, but it's all written for children and it is wonderful. It starts off with Anne adopting Ellie from a shelter after she had been abandoned by her previous owners (seriously, y'all, don't do that! It's cruel and most of those animals will be put to sleep!) and an almost immediate bunny rescue.
I volunteer with the local shelter in my parish (county for you folks not in Louisiana) and having just lost the shelter to a horrific flood almost two months ago, we're dealing with a lot more animals than usual and this book really hit the heartstrings. I'm not ashamed to say that I cried several times while reading this.
There's also a bit of revenge abandonment towards the beginning when Toby makes his appearance, and that just made me livid because people really do that! I wish the book had more addressed how cruel it is to abandon your furbabies, but it is for children so it mostly just shows hurt feelings and shock. The animals in this book are very lucky.
And yes, I am recommending this to my mom for her to read to the children she keeps. :-D
The author of this heartwarming tale told from the point of view of a dog and a cat is a veterinarian who understandably has a great kinship with animals. Targeted for children in the eight to twelve year age range, the chapter book has no sex, violence or profanity which makes it a nice choice for a family read aloud. This book will take you on a series of adventures that will put you in their shoes.
The adventure begins when Ellie, who is a one year old Border Collie, suddenly finds herself in an animal shelter when her owners become pregnant. After what seems like an eternity, a kind woman named Anne adopts her. Ellie soon discovers that her new owner loves animals; Ellie begins to bring animals in trouble home. Soon she is sharing her home with Toby, a six-month old kitten who becomes her best friend. Together they will form an improbable but talented rescue team.
When Anne is hurt in an automobile accident, she meets a fireman named Brent and their lives become even more involved in animal and human rescue. They will all face adventures and disasters that hit close to home. The plot is simple and predictable, but the author has a real knack for using first person to get the reader in the head of the animal characters. Text level of difficulty is suitable for middle grade independent readers; younger children will enjoy listening to the story read aloud. Nice book to curl up with on a rainy weekend afternoon.
Ellie the dog feels abandoned when she gets left at the animal shelter by her owners, but is eventually adopted by a caring woman named Anne. Ellie absolutely loves her new owner and her new life. One night, during a thunderstorm, a scared kitten named Toby ends up at their house and he is also welcomed into the family. Ellie and Toby become a very successful search and rescue team.
I thought this was a really cute story! I really liked how loving Anne was. She reminded me of myself because I'm always wanting to bring home homeless animals and people. *hehe* She made these animals feel loved and wanted and that was wonderful. Even though people and animals thought it was strange that a cat and a dog could be a rescue team and doubted them, the pair never gave up and were repeatedly heroes. I think this book really reminds children to be loving, caring, and to be appreciative for what and who they have. My hope is that every child feels wanted in their life. If everyone tried to be a little more like Anne, this world would be a much better place. I definitely recommend this book for the kiddos in your life.
The story opens with Ellie sadly waiting in the animal shelter for someone to adopt her. When Anne comes in, they seem to know they will get along well. And their hunch is correct, they bond right away. When a storm comes up one night, an abandoned cat seeks shelter on their porch. The two friends accept the cat,Toby, into their family. Ellie and Toby become an efficient team for finding lost children and pets. After a tornado strikes their town they even search for survivors in the damaged buildings.
This story shows the power of affection and second chances. It would be great to use as an example of cooperation, too. Animal lovers and readers who enjoy stories of rescues and unlikely heroes will enjoy this book.
This is a cute book bout a dog, Ellie, and cat, Toby, who team up to be a rescue team, after they are both rescued by Anne. We meet Ellie first at a rescue center where she is confused and saddened because her previous owners felt they could not keep her as they were having a baby. Ellie is a sweet, loving border collie, and was looking forward to being with the baby, but now she is lonely and sad. Toby is a young cat who is discarded on the side of the road after a dispute between a couple.
I can see this being appealing to many young students, as most love to relate to stories about animals. In fact, once I get some hard copies (I got a free or reduced price Kindle copy from Bookbub, I know just the 4th graders who will be clambering for it.
For a kid's book, this was fine, just not outstanding. For a book about search and rescue dogs (and cats) it was terrible. These animals are humans in pet suits, with human understanding, and bear absolutely no relation to real-life search and rescue work. The pets involved get no training and work independently of their human companions, behaving in ways counter to their nature. As a fantasy, it works, but this is not supposed to be a fantasy. Kids won't care, but that doesn't make it okay. I would have preferred something further over the edge into true fantasy or something a little more grounded. As it is, it floats somewhere in the middle and fails on both fronts.
I enjoyed reading this book written from a dog's point of view. What do you get when you put a dog no one wants, a mischievous cat and a compassionate woman together? The Rescue Team! Follow the exploits of these three friends as they form a solid bond and save lives. Suitable for ages eight and up, the book is written in a simple style that teaches the lessons of being wanted, appreciated, and giving back.
The premise of this book is realistic, but it is written from an unusual perspective. The author uses an omniscient voice, describing even the dog's or cat's feelings of fear, excitement, etc. Their relationship with Anne, the woman who adopted them, is realistic and meaningful. The animals make wise choices throughout their adventures, and become heroes through the challenges they face. I think any middle-school reader would thoroughly enjoy this book!
I thought this was a cute story. Loved the twist of a cat being part of an animal rescue team. Both my girls are animal lovers so I knew they would love this story as well. I just finished reading it to them & they were very enthralled with it. We are looking forward to reading more by books by Billi Tiner & I'd love to read more about Ellie & Toby.
This is a childrens book, for maybe the ten to twelve year old age group. I think younger children would like the story if someone would read it to them.
The story speaks to animal rescue. The dog is an animal shelter rescue and the cat was abandoned by his owners.
They live with Ann and become a team that rescues animals and people.
I think young children would enjoy the book. It is great for any family considering a rescue and a good reminder that if you are not capable of providing a "forever" home for an animal perhaps you should not choose a live animal as a temporary item to have in your home. Bring home a stuffed animal instead.
If you're a dog or cat lover this is a nice adventure that's sure to warm your heart and the hearts of your young children to pre-teen children as you read about Ellie and Toby's rescue missions. Love, loyalty, friendship, selflessness, and teamwork abound in this book.
I liked this book. It was a nice little story. Overall I think I would give this book 3.5 or 3.6 stars. There were a few minor typing errors but I could tell what it was suppose to have been but I still thought it was a pretty good read.
oh dear - so bad, so corny. I begged the girls to let me quit after the first night - they weren't having it. oh well, onto something better tomorrow night:-) and we did get a lot of giggles out of it - so there is that.
Nice short story about 3 people, 2 dogs and a cat. The woman adopted a dog from a shelter and several days later a kitten appeared. The dog and kitten became friends. The book is a story about of it their adventures.
