This book is really good! I know the guy who wrote it….he’s a good writer but completely full of himself! 😏🤣 (jk)

I don’t think I’ve ever given a book only one star before, but this was the worst-written book I’ve ever read! The typos, the awful grammar, and the stilted writing made this really difficult to get through. There’s no way an editor or proofreader got within a mile of this book, and that was a huge mistake!

My Son is a Murderer by Spencer Guerrero
⭐️⭐️/5

Not gonna lie - this book had a wild premise. But ( in the most constructive way ) the author needs some practice and I'm all for following him on his journey to greatness.

What I liked 👍
•The premise was wonderful and kept me hanging on for dear life despite my grievances in the book. I loved the concept and needed to know what the truth was in the end.

What I didn't like 👎
• I no long like the word " said" Every single ounce of dialog in the book ended in " she/he said " and I feel like if this had been left out I may not have immediately been annoyed. It was used about 1500 times in the first half and I don't think it was necessary to portray a conversation... I "said" What I "said" 😏
• The whole book screams rich privilege and had someone had ACTUALLY been punished- despite Daddy's money, we wouldn't even have had the crime.
• Being late for a class isn't a detour - it's a delay
• Since when do police make an arrest before a body is found - questioning maybe. But a public arrest? That's "sue the department worthy"
• I feel like this book was a representation of what a teenager thinks adulthood is like- everything seemed wildly unrelatable in a real-life sense.

Anyway, I feel like all the 5-star reviews ( all 13 of them ) on GoodReads were awesome friends doing the author a solid 👌 Good for them! But I need to be honest. In the most constructive way possible.

@spencergauthor thank you for the early copy. And I can't wait to see what you do next!

Ok, so…

I generally don’t write reviews that seem to attack an author, but this book was just so bad. It reads like it was written by a 13 year old in their first attempt at writing. The book is full of typos, grammatical errors, continuity mistakes, and a plethora of other problems that any book editor on a bad day should have picked up. If the author self published without an editor this was a huge mistake. I thought the premise seemed like an interesting story but the writing was so juvenile. Honestly I’m stopping here. I had a lot more written out about the problems in this book but I think the best thing to do is just leave it here with the caveat to skip this one. Even the epilogue was terrible and that’s often where a bad thriller can turn it around.

DNF at Chapter 6.
There were two very obvious typos before I even got to chapter 2. I had to reread chapter 1 to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. It starts AFTER the murder and then suddenly her kids are coming down the stairs and it’s magically BEFORE the murder. No flash back, no scene change, no break in text.

Felt like I was reading a 2nd graders creative writing assignment.
If the best comeback you can come up with when two adults are fighting is “you’re stupid!”, I’m out.

This was a no for me and life is too short to read books that you don’t click with.

This was… something.

There was zero indication of when a flash back was happening. Things would be happening in the past and in the same sentence it was back to the present. I had to reread parts multiple times to make sure I was understanding it correctly.

The writing was not good. Between the past/present changes and the POV of the main character constantly shifting tenses I was constantly rereading pages. There were parts where they tried to drop in hints to distract you and put you onto someone else, but they were increasingly obvious that’s what was happening.

The characters were annoying as hell. The main character was obnoxious and gave me pick-me/crazy “boy mom” vibes. The conversations between characters, even adult characters, were written like teenagers pretending to be adults. The way the teenagers talked was like an adult trying to be “hip” and “cool”. The little brother talking and acting like he’s six and turns out he’s actually thirteen.

The plot was all over the damn place. I was getting whiplash with how jumpy it was. Random flashbacks, friends then not friends but no explanations until weird shit happened later, sexual assault, domestic violence, twists that weren’t really twists and were super obvious the whole time.

Also the way things were being handled by the police it was obvious we’ve never even seen a police procedural television show

The worst thing I have ever read. If I could give it negative stars I would.

I started this book because the concept and premise sounded good and interesting but I could not have been more wrong. It’s just plain bad writing and the storyline is all over the place.

There are so many plot inconsistencies that I’m not sure the author knew what was going on at all and you constantly have to reread pages as he contradicts himself throughout the entire book. I also don’t think he knew or had decided who the murderer was going to be until the final pages as it seemed like everyone was accused.

The author really needs to do more research before writing or even coming up with a story plot, particularly around police procedures because no way would they arrest a minor and not allow an adult or legal guardian in the room with him. Nor would a police officer be allowed to bring in the accused mother to help with an investigation and question/interrogate people.

The characters are all really irritating and immature. The main character gave awful “pick me” boy mum vibes and victimised herself at every opportunity. There’s a lot of ridiculous and unnecessary fighting between all of the characters and the way they speak to each other is just cringey to read.

I’m glad I read this on my free trial of kindle unlimited because I would be fuming if I’d paid for this and would be asking for a refund.

I would strongly urge the author to sign with a publishing company or change career paths completely.

What was this supposed to be? The dialogue felt so stiffed and unnatural and so very cringe. Got to 50% and gave up. If I never see the phrases “he/she said” “I said” again my life I’ll be ok. Like I get this is a fictional book but did the characters have to be so fake? Felt like a creative writing project for high school. And clearly the author did no research on how murders/ cops work. And the way the story “flashed” back and forth between present, and past was so awkward. I’m not sure if this is the author’s first book but .. yea this just wasn’t it.

Literally unreadable. Obviously self-published, there’s no way a proofreader or an editor got anywhere close to that ‘book’, spelling and grammar are just horrible. The guy has no clue how to construct a story or flesh out characters, it’s probably the worst book I’ve ever come across. How on earth do people give this positive reviews??

This book reads like a long train of thought, and not an actual story being told. In some cases it reads like a very long text message. I’m not sure the author even used an editor, and if so they need a new one. I only finished this book because I had nothing else to read and couldn’t download a new book at the time due to no internet. 0/10 would not recommend.

This book may be the best story ever told, but I couldn't get past the first 4 chapters before I had to stop. Don't read unless you like to read the words, "she said" and "he said" at the end of every sentence. Very frustrating.

I received an eARC and I am leaving an honest review.

This book captivates you from the very first page, giving you a different POV to that of the rest of the book. The thriller is filled with mistery and gives you lots of twists and turns! There's so many potential murderers and when you think you got it, there comes another plot twist! Definitely keeps you on your toes and edge of your seat!
I also enjoyed the exposition and writing style, although i found the "she said/he said/i said" after dialouges a little repetitive. I'd have also loved to see Sonya be a little more foot-in-the-door kind of character. Personally, i found her to be a little soft, but that's a personal preference.
I genuinely loved this thriller. It was right up my street and i definitely recommend it.

I read this book as a quick thriller to cleanse my palette after too many romance novels. I regret it. I cringed and questioned wtf so many times while reading this. This book also needs trigger warnings for a minimum of 5 topics. Some of the topics did nothing to advance the story and could have been left out.

Not only was it so poorly written, but the story was incredibly unrealistic. You can tell when authors put the time and energy into researching the fields they are writing about (law enforcement/teaching/being a teen)…this author clearly did no research.

The ending was a poorly written where are they now like you would see at the end of a documentary. The characters were so under developed, so I didn’t really care to find out where they ended up.

I usually don’t give written reviews but wish I read some of the posted reviews prior to starting. This author was highly hyped in a popular social media group I’m in so I thought I would try it out. The only reason I finished was because it was so short. The writing was awful and juvenile. If I had to read “baby” or “the worst case ever of blah blah blah” one more time, I probably would’ve lost my mind. Life is too short to waste your time reading shitty books, so do yourself a favor and skip this one.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say this book was written by a 13 year old. I couldn’t even finish it. It is short and “fast paced” but missing so much. People randomly getting arrested for murder for no reason. Also, how many people can accidentally cut themselves by just simply HOLDING a box cutter? Does the author even know what a box cutter is? Even the dialogue between adult characters is very immature. I was excited to try a new author but this one is not for me.

I honestly don’t know how I was able to make it through this book. The endless plot twists, inconsistencies, grammatical errors, and terrible dialogue make this probably one of the worst books I’ve read. Not to mention the fact that the author is clueless in how the justice system works. I cringed at every interaction with the police.

Okay so this was a good read I just didn’t like how some parts were written if that makes since. 16 year old Henry is found dead and his best friend 16 year old Ethan is the number one suspect. The only person that believes that he is innocent is his mother and she will do anything to prove to everyone else that he is innocent and to keep him out of jail.
I didn’t like how the mom seemed to already think that her son had something to do with Henry’s death before he was even arrested. She was asking him questions about his disappearance and after he was found dead asking him if he had anything to do with it. Also, I felt like the parents, whose divorced, argued way to much. They should have been trying to get their son out of jail instead of being difficult and arguing every time they saw each other.

Okay…I tried so hard to like this book, the premise was so unique and had me interested . Unfortunately I almost DNF’d it numerous times…I found so much of the dialogue completely unrealistic and juvenile…the way some of the characters dealt with situations was not even remotely “normal” or realistic. One of my biggest issues was *SPOILER* the part with the DV situation was wildly infuriating…it felt like it was both made so dramatic and terrifying and then also nonsensical with the “teeth chattering against the barrel of the gun” and then her having a conversation begging for her life supposedly at the same time…it just fell flat and that should never be the case considering the topic…and don’t even get me started on the CSA aspect and the pedo teacher that whole situation was insanely ridiculous and that should not be the case considering the severity of the topic…it was ridiculous and again it made it feel juvenile…I hate that I keep using that word but I’m kind of at a loss for another fitting word. And the characters reactions to it felt forced and unauthenticly overly dramatic if that makes sense…the dialogue was almost comical and completely unrealistic considering especially the subject matter. I’m not trying to just sh!t on the book but I almost stopped reading so many times but I loved the premise and wanted to know how it ended.I just felt like it was written by a teenager almost…your son has been questioned for murder and now they are wondering where you were and as an adult you seriously say “I was worker or getting my drink on”….seriously?? Says no adult ever. And while the ending was surprising I can’t say that it was worth the read, which sucks because it honestly had so much potential.

Phew, where do I start?

I feel like this author has so much potential and this book COULD have been much better written. The storyline the author chose was great, he just couldn’t execute it well enough in my opinion.

There was so much dialogue, and I literally mean so much of the book is all ‘I said, he said and she said’ at the end of every sentence. There was no character development and there could have been so much more detail wise that would have made this a better read.

I felt like I was reading a high school kids creative writing piece. The writing was very immature. The main characters fights were very immature like a high school romance would fight.

I’ll admit I didn’t research the author to see if he has children but judging by the writing I would assume not. 13 year old boys do not talk/act as immaturely as the author made Santi do.

If this was the first book by this author I hope he takes the constructive criticism and continues to write books. He has a great plot but he needs help with how to take that and truly make it a novel.

This book was missing descriptive content, background on the main characters and why there were the way they are. We got a very brief glimpse of that around 81% through but that should have been developed so much more.

If I was grading a high school paper this would earn a solid 7/10 but as an author it fell flat. An editor would probably have helped and maybe some ARC before publication.

Overall, this author had potential, just this book did not showcase it

Truly I don’t understand the low ratings for this book. This was such a fun, quick, read-in-one sitting novel, the twists and the plot was so fast paced and I honestly couldn’t put this down! What an amazing fun story, I really recommend if you’re in the mood for a thrill ride of a book. Immediately starting the second book now!

4.5/5! Great read!

My Son Is A Murderer is a quick read but does not lack thrill and suspense! Kept me on my toes and guessing the entire time! I did not see the ending coming!

There are many triggers in this book, so look into those before reading if you are sensitive to those.

Okay! HOLY COW! I was not expecting that! Like, at all. I went into this book blind… as well as my first experience with this author and I’m gonna go binge the rest now!

As a mom of two boys, it really, really got me in the feels… in like, a crazy kind of way. I was hooked from the prologue to the epilogue… I didn’t want to stop.

Oh my!!!! 🫣🫣🫣 this story reminded me of a bad reality TV show that is so bad but you cannot look away?? That. But somehow I liked it!!! 🙂‍↔️🤣🤣🤣🤣. No boundaries , no runaround. Everyone is so blunt. Hahaha. Will read the next one. I would consider this as a thriller fluff.

unfortunately could not finish. i really wanted to like this but the writing is just not great. i think the author has a lot of potential but they need to hire an editor! its a very confusing read due to the grammatical errors and such. the first few chapters feel like one long run on sentence that doesnt connect to itself.
that being said i wont be blacklisting the author, they do seem like a genuine person that wants to create good stories for people to enjoy. i will be attempting another shot, someday. maybe give it a little bit of time(:
