After Stevie Mazetti learned of her former partner's corruption, it became her mission to seek out those who had been unfairly incarcerated because of him, beyond what he had acknowledged prior to his death. Her investigating has made her a target and attempts are now being made on her life and her daughter, Cordelia's. Clay Maynard is pretty much glued to her side as protection and because he still holds out hope for a much more personal relationship.

One of the things we don't have to guess about here is who's trying to kill Stevie. The mastermind behind the attempts is identified early on and I liked that we got his point of view throughout. That allowed me to just fully immerse myself in the book. It really was the Stevie and Clay story and their developing relationship was as rocky as I thought it would be. Even though she was maddening at times, her behavior was true to character. It was worth the exasperation.

The efforts to identify and nab the killer were interesting and exciting. There were a few surprises despite already knowing his identity. My only quibble was how often he and his team were able to elude and overpower law enforcement. I couldn't suspend my belief system enough to buy it, which prevented this from being a 5-star rated book.

I continue to love this series and my decision to switch to the audio format. Marguerite Gavin is excellent!

For me this book was a perfect wrap-up of all the events that have taken place in past books. But the first thing I feel like I need to point out is that you should probably read previous books first. If you haven’t the sheer amount of plot lines going on and the reasoning behind them may take longer to grasp. I also need to say that if you are planning on reading previous books please don’t continue reading this review as it will inevitably have spoilers. Having read nearly all of Karen Rose’ books I was itching to get this latest one and as soon as it was ready to go on my Kindle I eagerly started.

Stevie Mazzetti is a ballsy woman, however she is also a woman that has spent 8 years grieving the loss of her husband and son. With the killer behind bars she has a path to follow and is desperate to rectify some things. Her ex-partner turned out to be a dirty cop and as Stevie starts to dig cases up, it seems her life as well as her daughters are now in danger. The danger levels are pretty high up from early in the book and to be fair don’t drop until the very end making for a fast-paced and pretty tense read.

The additional characters that are involved in this story could take a while to detail, but the main player being Clay Maynard the PI who wants to protect Stevie and her kid. Clay is a great lead character and although he is the main lead in this story we see the return of many other characters from previous books. One of the things I love about the Karen Rose books is that the characters are not forgotten. They may appear frequently or just the once but you get to see glimpses of people from previous stories and how they link to the current characters. Some people may wonder how they can even work out who belongs where, but check out Karen Rose Website as there is a place there that explains the relationship between people and books (which is a bloody great idea if you ask me). Check it out as http://www.karenrosebooks.com/krose-r....

Back to the story, there is a lot going on and that is by no means an understatement. There are numerous plot threads and just when you think that things are coming to a close, something else pops up. I have to say that at nearly 600 pages this is a humdinger of a book, even by KR standards. Even so, once again Karen Rose has produced a first class thriller that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. I for one will be eagerly awaiting the next book, as it seems Karen Rose is hitting the jackpot with each and every book

Not sure but as much as I love Karen Rose, this book didn't just worked out as I expected. Maybe I waited too much and expected too much.

A great addition to the Baltimore series by Karen Rose.

Stevie Mazzetti lost her husband and son in a shooting at a convenience store eight years ago when she was pregnant with their daughter. With a lot of struggle she moves forward and is now investigating cases closed by her late corrupt partner. The cold cases are making a lot of people nervous and there are various attempt on Stevie's life. Clay Maynard a PI who is in love with Stevie for the past two years would risk anything to protect Stevie and her daughter.

This a great romantic suspense but the Baltimore series have to be read in order. A great blend of mystery and romance with a satisfying end to Stevie and Clay's story

I did like this book, but had to deduct one star because Stevie got on my nerves in the first half of the book and annoyed the hell out of me.

While recovering from a gunshot wound, Detective Stevie Mazzetti is digging into her former partner's cases, trying to see how many people he railroaded into prison. But there are several people who don't want her to dig into the past. When Stevie becomes the target of some killers, Private Investigator Clay Maynard is there to protect her. Clay fell for Stevie the first time he saw her. He isn't about to let anyone get near her or her young daughter Cordelia.

Finally...Stevie and Clay's book. They've been circling each other for nearly two years. I was beginning to think I was the only one who could feel the chemistry between them. Stevie kept pushing Clay away until I was ready to scream. I'm glad they finally worked everything out in this book.

I loved the action in this story. It started off with a bang and didn't let up. My rating: 4 Stars.

Stevie and Clay, finally! This had better be as good as the story I've cooked up in my imagination. An absolute sweetheart of a heroine and a flawed and scared hero. It is always interesting when supporting characters in previous books get their own story and this one had better be good as I have quite a plot already firmly implanted in my brain. Well folks, it is.

Revenge is a dish best served cold and there are a lot of people who want revenge against Stevie, and that means they want her dead. Is the revenge tied to the murder of her husband, Paul and her son Paulie? Is the revenge for any number of perps she has caught, and or, killed? Is it for the cases she is reopening in the wake of her former partner's crimes as a dirty cop? Although there are many motives and Karen Rose could have spun any of them into a creditable plot, she chose to reveal the mastermind and motive early on which made this a game of cat and mouse. But, is he the only one out for revenge? One thing is for sure, Clay is absolutely not going to let it happen.

Clay and Stevie - off the charts hot and with a whole lot denial on Stevie's part. She firmly believes that she cannot love another man as much as she loved her dead husband. She keeps pushing Clay away and denies the magnetic attraction between them. Clay knows Stevie is a stubborn, strong woman who has made up her mind about him. He just can't help it, he loves her and will move heaven and earth to keep her safe and maybe, just maybe, make her love him.

I was pretty sure I had read some of this author and liked her but I found I couldn’t finish this one. Too much time spent telling us who everyone is and were or is married to and I can’t believe they were all that important. Some of it was possibly filling in information from previous books but I really think if it was important it needed to be shown not told. The main character annoyed me too because she was putting everyone else (quite aside from herself) at ridiculous risk and when this included her daughter I gave up. Also her antipathy to the hero was not really believable. Read like a soap opera.

We finally get Clay and Stevie's story and it merits 5 stars. Of all KR's heroes Clay Maynard is my favorite. He is the best of what a hero should be. And he is perfect for Stevie if she can get past her fears and issues and grab happiness. First they have to catch the person trying to kill Stevie and threatening her young daughter. The book is long with lots of characters and old friends appearing but it is worth it to get to a happy ending for these two. Highly recommended!

565 pages of sheer genius – Karen Rose gets better and better with each new book she releases. I can’t even put into words how thrilled I am each time I finish one of her masterpieces in crime. I can never get enough! And I’m ecstatic with the way she has continued to up the romance scenes. She has definitely perfected the blend of both the suspense and the romance.

“Watch Your Back” was an incomparable journey into the heinous crimes some people commit and from which they feel no remorse. It was also the story of unconditional friendship, protecting heroes, and fierce and never-ending love. Waiting on Rose to give Clay and Stevie their own story has been long and tortured but well-worth the wait.

There is quite a lot of past history from earlier books so it’s probably wise to at least read those where Clay and Stevie make appearances. Rose doesn’t skim on details and her straightforward manner of setting them before readers is a magical treat. As the action excels, so will your heart rate.

I can’t much more than I simply put this author at the top of my auto-buy list.

Two words: FANTASY ROMANCE. Here is a third word: UGH!

I don't know how these books keep ending up on my reading pile. Wait, yes I do. I look at 'available now' books on overdrive and then I check GR for the GR rating and if it is above 3.7, I press download. So now, from this day forward, I do solemnly swear I will also check out the main page genres because I can't take much more of this.

There were 2 types of protagonists. The do-gooder victims and do-gooder helpers. They were all the exact same character with just a slightly different role, all singing the exact same tune. It was like they were all in a circle, holding hands, singing, "This land is my land...." with the faint sounds of a tambourine bringing up the rear.

I had just finished reading a very well written book, minutes before I started this one, so maybe this one suffers by comparison, but then again maybe not. The writing was just ok. I am left feeling like I wasted an afternoon.

Stevie Mazzetti is a tough cop, a single parent, and has a bullseye on her back. It seems the list of people wanting her dead is becoming longer every day. As she’s trying to recover from her latest near-death experiences, she is shot at in a restaurant on the anniversary of her husband’s and son’s deaths. She escapes with a graze but two people end up paying the ultimate price for being in Stevie’s vicinity.

Family, friends and coworkers keep telling her to lay low, but Stevie continues her quest for righting the wrongs of her ex-partner/dirty cop, Silas Dandridge. Will she back away from her job to protect herself and her daughter, or will Stevie continue to make enemies and eventually lose everything, including her life?

Stevie, Stevie, Stevie. This girl was really making me angry while reading this book. First, she pushes away Clay Maynard, a man who loves her and her child and wants to protect them. Then she continues to work as a cop with all these death threats around her. Stevie seems to put the needs of others above her daughter. In the end she did see the light, finally, but at what cost? I didn’t think it was worth it.

Then we have the very dreamy Clay Maynard. Clay is strong, protective and wants to be back in Stevie’s life. Stevie doesn’t want Clay in her life or to replace her late husband so she pushes him away. I really felt for the guy. But Clay hung in there and fought for Stevie and I was glad to see they were able to make it work.

Karen Rose sure knows how to write a villain. Todd Robinette, Robbie, was cold, calculating and unremorseful. He is fueled by vengeance against Stevie and his hate is a living, breathing entity that transmitted thoroughly. I’m always curious on how she does her research when constructing these bad guys. Another great read from Karen Rose.

What I really liked about this one was how so many things from the past came into play with this one. What I didn't care for was Stevie. For much of the book it seemed like she threw Clay's feelings back in his face, all the while accepting his protection for her and her daughter. It was getting so bad that I started to hate her, which very much colored how I felt about the book.

I found it funny how everyone was trying to talk Stevie into getting over herself, which she needed to do. But it seemed the more that they harped on her, the more that Stevie dug her heels in.

I found the mystery to be compelling, the lengths that some people would go to hide their greed was astounding. I liked how things tied into the previous book with the bad cops. It seemed like they had found all the bad cops, but sadly there were more hidden away.

Even with my problems with Stevie, I liked how this one ended.

Much of this book is very readable and follows the usual Rose formula of police procedural plus romance. But at 700 pages it is overlong and drags in many places. Needs a damn good edit or even a split into two seperate novels. The characters are very one dimensional: the good guys and the bad guys.

And the romantic entanglement is always the same story: they want each other, they can't have each other, they nearly have each other, they can't have each other, oh look they've done it and live happily ever after.

At the start I was truly hoping that this 4th instalment of the Baltimore romance/thriller books (by Karen Rose) was going to be meatier and more original than the 3 preceding books, but unfortunately it wasn’t. It’s as generic and as uninspired as the previous. I’ll grant the author has a knack to keep things flowing and interesting enough to read on, but more than that?... No...
Some aspects were a bit more captivating, especially finding out who the bad guys were, and how it all fit together with young police officer Sam Hudson in the picture (that part I liked).
As for the romance part, that was rather generic and boring - if I may be honest.

All the characters of the previous books were forefront and present, and that was nice but I can easily imagine that if you haven’t read the previous books, that you would become confused. And yes, I like most of the characters: Clay Maynard, Private Investigator, his associate Paige, and the FBI agents, Joseph Carter, Deacon Kovak, etc. etc. (again, introduced in the previous books).
Watch Your Back focuses on Clay and Stevie (Stefania) Mazzetti, a homicide detective that has lost her husband and five year old boy, shot at a robbery in a grocery store, eight years ago. And actually my main problem in this story is that the writer hammered too much on Stevie’s reluctance to examine her feelings for Clay, the private investigator, who helps her, is in love with her, and whom I’ve always like in the previous book. Seeing him now grovelling for Stevie’s affection, I thought he became less interesting – too much alpha male, that gets tired pretty fast.

The story hovers between a 2 and 3 stars.

Aaaaargh, Karen Rose... Why do they ALWAYS END UP MARRIED AND PREGNANT?

Aside from that, this was an awesome book. I'd been looking forward to Stevie's story for a while, and apart from the usual married-with-kids fate for characters past and present, it was fantastic.

Please, Ms. Rose, can your next protagonists be happily childless and unmarried, yet in love?

I really like Karen Rose's Romantic Suspense series, especially the ones set in and around Baltimore, Maryland. I've lived there, worked there, and know the area really well. I love her characters and the struggles they have. I felt so bad for them when they had to realize that . I'm going to continue to read all the books in this series.

Watch Your Back is book fifteen in the Romantic Suspense series by Karen Rose. Stevie Mazzetti felt guilt about her ex-partners miscarriage of justice decided to investigate all his cases. However, someone was not happy with her investigation and started to shot at her and her daughter Cordelia this, when Clay Maynard came onto the scene, as her bodyguard. The readers of Watch Your Back will go on a rollercoaster ride with Stevie and Clay to find out who wants Stevie dead.

I forget about everything around me reading Watch Your Back. I love the portrayal of her characters and the way they interacted with each other. Karen Rose did an excellent job of engaging me with the plot of this book. Watch Your Back is well written and researched by Karen Rose. I like the way Karen Rose describes her settings throughout this book. Karen Rose did a fantastic of combining the two plots in Watch Your Back.

The readers of Watch Your Back will learn about grieve and how it affects everyone differently. Also, readers of Watch Your Back will understand the importance of animal therapy for children and adult who have suffered a trauma.

I recommend this book.

I love Karen Rose, she is my favorite romantic suspense writer. I just couldn't get in to this one though. Usually I can finish her books in 2 days, this one took me a week because I kept getting bored. Stevie was not my favorite heroine, she came out very whiny and self-absorbed.

The preview of her next novel looks fantastic though, totally creepy. I can't wait!

The author typically produces competently crafted thrillers, however the story does not have the strength to sustain this very long telling.
