In the FINAL ISSUE of The GLAAD Media Award-nominated sports comic's latest chapter, Seiji gets an up close and personal look into Nicholas' past, and a clearer picture of just how much determination it took for Nicholas to overcome adversity and a rocky start.
While preparing for the difficult road ahead and the State Championships, and (especially) while spending some hometown time together, they're faced with a tempting thought... Is this... a date?

I read this last night, but I'm flipping through it again now and just noticed that NICHOLAS GIVES SEIJI HIS JACKET TO WEAR while they're walking back to camp and I AM UNWELL WHYYYYYYYYYYY HOW LONG ARE WE GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT ISSUE I AM IN PAIN 🍨🍨🌅😍💘❤️🔥🥹💀
I've read books so romantic and fluffy before but the little fact of Nick giving Seiji his jacket got me jumping from the roof. I'd probably die before this gets completed but I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!
The date appointment could have been a little longer. Let me have a panel of them eating sundaes. Let me have a panel of them being idiots. Ahhhh every time i finish a Fence issue I just crave for the next one.
”I thought I was so far ahead of you. I don’t understand… how you’ve closed this much distance… when I have began this race with a ten-year head start? Have I been so focused on the boy ahead of me… that I haven’t noticed who’s coming up behind?”
The training at Halverton Camp has ended and the boys have four hours of free time. Seiji and Nicholas head out on their appointment (which is definitely not a date, not at all), Bobby uncovers secrets from their Coach's past and Harvard learns to prioritise himself.
I am so sad that this miniseries is already over. I want and need more Fence in my life, soon. This issue was cute and funny, just like all the issues have been so far, and I really liked seeing Nicholas and Seiji in their spare time. Nicholas showing Seiji his hometown, where he trained and Seiji realising how a) difficult Nicholas's childhood was and b) how brilliant he is considering he never had proper training before Kings Row. Also, them having sundaes was way too cute, as was their insistence that this was not a date they just went on. I love them. I need them to kiss.
Speaking of people I want to see kiss, Harvard and Aiden were once again pathetic in this issue. Harvard is going out on a date for the first time in probably ages, and Aiden is all sorts of sad about it. They are silly and stupid and oblivious, and I would like them to smooch. I appreciated that even though Aiden obviously wishes to be the one Harvard goes on dates with, he does not try and sabotage Harvard's love life, as crappier love interests would. He is a good friend to Harvard, even if it costs him.
I am intrigued by the hinted tea between Coaches Sally and Alessandra. I want to learn more!
As I said, I am sad this chapter of this story is over, since there is no way of knowing yet when Fence will come back again. I am gonna miss these monthly chapters a lot.
Eu simplesmente amei?????
I was so excited about the continuation of the story and I was not dissapointed. The story delivered and we had an improvement in design as well. The only thing I didn't like is the feeling I got that it progressed a bit fast, that I missed a chapter or something. All in all, great!
Okay, but it’s a bit disappointing that the date I looked forward to so much was only a few pages long. After all this time that’s the only thing we get.
This issue felt very oddly paced. I felt like we were jumping a little too much.
This issue for once and for all lays to rest the canonicity of Striking Distance and Disarmed. The books are unfortunately not canon. Up till now, the comics have really waffled on committing one way or the other but in this issue, it's quite clear. I'm personally not a fan of this decision because I loved those books like Disarmed was truly amazing and I'm in love with it but knowing it is not canon hurts. The only positive side to the books not being canon is that we will probably get to see Aiden and Harvard get together for the first time again.
My favourite part of this issue was Nicholas and Seiji's date appointment but that too felt oddly rushed even though it was really romantic.
This issue ends with the implication that the next time this story picks up it will be with the State Championships and I'm a little apprehensive that we are headed towards the end because I am not really sure how long this comic plans to continue for. But even if we are not headed towards an end to the comic itself I feel like there is a lot that still needs to happen because it feels very unsatisfying to be headed to the Championships when truly not a lot seems to have happened. I feel like Nicholas should have improved more than he has and his relationship with Seiji should have been more toward the middle and not in its very first stages.
Overall, I feel like I can no longer excuse the comic for taking its time because things in the characters' personal lives seem to moving at a glacial pace compared to the narrative of the comic itself. The first three volumes of this comic where just deciding who would be on the team than the next volume was the match against MLC and then the last two volumes have focused on the Halverton Training Camp, it feels like a lot of time has gone by yet the plot is still stuck taking baby steps. I'm not a fan but I feel like if I had more of an idea of how long they plan this comic to be I would be more settled and comfortable with the creators taking their time but as it has been, I didn't even realize this volume was even happening till the first issue had already been published.
Review applies to vol 1-4 of this comic series. I feel like I stepped too far into a world of specific jargon and we'll established characters who already know each other so well. It was a little overwhelming to jump straight into this series with no prior knowledge of their preferences, strengths and challenges. I also have realised it takes a really special sports manga/comic to really grab my attention. I liked the cute faces the illustrator did!
I NEED more of Seiji and Nicholas dates "appointments"!!! And are we just going to ignore Seiji wearing Nicholas's jacket??!?
Wish we'd seen some of Harvard's date. Eugene really got zero page-time in Redemption. ngl I don't care about the coach rivalry backstory, but happy for y'all.
