Six months ago, Brooke Starr was one impeccable piano performance away from Juilliard. Now, she is lonely, devastated, orphaned . . . seeking solace in a place where the sun never sets and trying to make sense of the dark tragedy that clouds her shattered heart.
There are no coincidences. . . .
Deep-sea fisherman Chance Taylor can’t imagine what his life would be if he’d never taken that midnight stroll to the pier. Had never seen the intriguing, raven-haired girl swan dive into the Alaskan sea. Had never plunged into the icy waters to rescue her . . . and finally felt her electric charge.
As their blazing chemistry consumes them, Chance is determined to save Brooke from her demons. But Brooke knows she must find her own footing. She thinks she’s already lost everything—until the terror of her past catches up with her and threatens all that she has left: her life, her love, and the freedom to choose between drowning in grief and finding joy in the darkness.

I'm not saying this was a bad read, but it just wasn't for me...
Insta-attraction/love/lust + soap opera storyline + overly dramatic heroine = not the best combination to make an excellent read.
To be honest, I really liked the story when it first started. The prologue was heart wrenching and I felt really bad for all the loss Brooke had to go through. I was interested to find out how she would pick up her life after such dramatic events and I could tell that there was much more drama and suspense to come. Then, when she moved to Alaska, the change in setting made for a very original atmosphere and all the eccentric Alaskan characters really "brightened up" the story.
The hero could have been swoon worthy if it wouldn't have been for his instant declarations of love and "having found his soul-mate" without even having talked to the person he's referring to for more than a minute... Talk about insta-love.
Maybe if I would have been able to connect with the characters, I would have enjoyed the story much more but, as it was, I just kept waiting to get truly "hooked" and that sadly never happened. This story had so much potential but the more it progressed, the more unrealistic it became, in my opinion.
I still liked the author's writing style though and I've read another series of her that I did enjoy reading, so I'll definitely still give her future work a try!
If you're interested or intrigued by the storyline, don't let my review stop you from checking it out for yourself. You might enjoy it more than I did!
On to the next one ;)

How could your whole life change just like that??? Your future flushed down the drain, forcing you to leave the only home you ever imagined and seek refuge miles and miles away from home. Brooke, a gifted pianist, who was once a top contender at Julliard, seeks seclusion in Alaska, where she hopes to bury her past and start anew. But who would’ve ever though that you could find peace after so much loss??? Brooke is about to find out and finally take a Chance on living.
The Darkest Joy was an emotional read, I felt for her loss, her life and her future. The book had a little bit of everything; mystery, flirtatious fun, steam and a swoon-worthy fisherman who becomes overly protective of our dear Brooke. Her guilt was eating away at her and she deserved to be happy and needed to be reminded of that fact. Told from two different POV, Brooke’s and Chance, learning a little bit more about Alaska and fishing.
This was one of those books where I found myself rooting not only for the couple but also for her to find her footing in her new life. I’ve read the author’s other work, where I was completely sucked in and that is what I was hoping for with this one. Still highly enjoyable but just wanted that added extra to sweep me away.

**Quotes were taken from the ARC version of the book and may change upon publication**
“I fight with myself, the contrary emotions warring with each other. I’m not at peace. Yet…I want joy. Even if it is dark, I yearn for it. The darkest joy is better than none at all. Imperfect, vital…it comes like a thief in the night and robs your heart of its energy to resist the love that has been offered.”
My thoughts: I have to be completely honest, I loved the book when it first started but as it progressed the plot and characters fell off the deep end. I mean, aside from the unrealistic developments in the story line and characterizations I was a bit flabbergasted with the angst, impractical “love at first sight” progression, and over all sappiness/cheesiness.
Also, near the ending when you reach the climax of the story it was a big, “WHAAAT?!?, what the f*#k?!” moment since it was totally surprising and unexpected. Plus too, the reasoning behind it was even more lame and disturbing.
Gosh, I don’t know what to say guys. I mean, this story had so much potential alone from the synopsis alone and it started off solid but in the end I feel like it just fell apart in the end.
I’m now kind of curious as to who or what book two in the series is going to be about since obviously in the title it implies that there is going to be another installment(s) hence on. Hmmm…
“Don’t feel guilty for surviving, for finding some goddamned happiness.”

The Darkest Joy is a heart rending emotional sucker punch to the gut. Don't get me wrong it is not all sorrow, there is laughter, Eros's signature snark, joy, friendship, love and even obsession. Yes, you will go through the gambit of emotions while immersed in this fabulous, memorizing, shocking plot. Marata Eros vividly captures the agony of profound loss but brilliantly depicts the beautiful and painful transformation that takes place after dealing with these life altering emotional scars. The Darkest Joy is a dark, beautiful, pulse pounding, suspense filled story that will keep you riveted till the end.

Eh.. was rather underwhelmed with the story. Had huge hopes for it to due to its premise but the story just fell on it's nose for me. I didn't feel the connection on the romance, feelt rather rushed and non thought out. But it was okay
In the blink of an eye, the cruel hand of a murderer has left piano prodigy Brook Starr utterly alone, her family dead and her will to live sorely tested. On impulse, twenty-year-old Brooke abandons her life and her music and flees to her late, Great-Aunt’s run-down cabin in a fishing village in Alaska, riddled with survivor’s guilt and vacillating between ending her own life and starting a new one, far removed from the memories and the future that will never be that haunts her. Welcomed by this small town, Brooke still finds little to live for, until at her darkest moment, Chance enters her life. Chance Taylor, a sexy, yet aloof fisherman has hired Brooke as a temporary deckhand aboard his fishing boat. Something vulnerable in this beautiful, yet sad young woman strikes at Chance’s heart and forces him to care. Will the magic of the re-awakening of life and love in both Brooke and Chance heal the pains of the past? There is more to her family’s deaths than meets the eye and others connected to Brooke’s past also become victims. Is it hate that drives this murderer? Will Chance or Brooke be next?
The Darkest Joy by Marata Eros is a testament to her ability to morph into a slightly softer author while maintaining her signature style, which is upfront and filled with engaging and wickedly realistic dialogue and sensual steam. She manages to toss a few twists that keeps the reader guessing until the end, and when it hit me, I can definitely say, “I didn’t see that one coming!” She keeps her supporting cast on point with their own distinct personalities and even brought back a name that many fan/readers will recognize, the venerable FBI Agent Clearwater!
The Darkest Joy is a journey of loss, hopeless darkness and the gradual rise into the light of love, hope and a future to live to the fullest. For fans, this is a Marata Eros MUST READ, for those who have yet to enjoy her unique gift of a strong writing style, The Darkest Joy is a wonderful place to start!

Review- The Darkest Joy by Marata Eros
I received The Darkest Joy ARC in exchange for an honest review. In my honest and humble opinion.... It was FREAKIN AWESOME!!!! Seriously, it was so dang good! So, my problem is: how to write a review and do the book the justice it deserves??!! So, I'll just write the way I always do, I'm sure you'll get the gist!
Brooke Starr has to escape her life in Seattle, where she is a studying piano prodigy and sole survivor of a family brutally murdered in cold blood. She sells the family home and moves to Alaska to live in a run-down cabin by the sea that she inherited from her Great Aunt who was also a victim of the massacre. Brooke lies through her teeth to get a job as a deckhand for charter fisherman, Chance Taylor, who hires her, site unseen, to help him for the 8 week halibut fishing season. But before Brooke can start her new job, she's overcome by grief and survivors guilt and decides to end it all. Chance sees her jump and saves her from drowning and that's where..... I'm going to leave it because you need to read it for yourself!
The Darkest Joy is a story of tragedy, brutality, hope and of course love and happiness. From the absolute beginning, Ms. Eros held me by the collar in a death grip of compelling, heart breakingly realistic grief. And that was just in the prologue! I was an absolute mess reading this scene, and in many more. But it isn't all sad, Brooke learning to live again was a beautiful thing to witness, and as always with Ms. Eros' books there is her trademark snarky humour that had me in fits of silent giggles at times!
The descriptions of the Alaskan topography and seasons was phenomenal. I felt like I was a tourist there myself because I could clearly picture every single bit of scenery. It's obvious Marata has a deep love and appreciation not only for Alaska itself, but the people who live there. I loved this private knowledge of the setting and it's inhabitants.
Chance Taylor, the lead spunk, is officially on my fictional boyfriend list (along with all of Ms. Eros' other leading men! She knows what we want from a man!), he's the whole package ladies!! He's always been married to the sea, and quite the man's man but finds himself completely taken with Brooke, even though he's her boss and it's highly inappropriate! He just can't give her up! Bless him!
All of the characters have found a place in my heart with their Alaskan charm. Jake being a fave. And the constant pulse of FBI Agent Clearwater from A Terrible Love and A Brutal Tenderness was really cool because we got to see more of his personality and his absolute compassion. The villain is ef-ed up and twisted, because ms. Eros is so good at writing horrible people!
The intrigue! Gah! I was guessing who the serial killer was right up until the reveal, following all the false trails and sneaky tricks by the author! She's so tricky!!! I definitely wouldn't make a good detective - jumping to conclusions every little sniff of a hint!
I absolutely LOVED and HIGHLY recommend The Darkest Joy! Ms Eros is certainly soaring with her new-found talent in the Contemporary Romance genre! Loved it! I can NOT wait for more books in this genre from this talented writer!
4- Gut wrenching stars! A lot happens in the first 30% of this book. The bottom literally drops out of Brooke's life. She loses everything and then gives herself a new life although temporary, in Alaska. I loved the Alaskan backdrop to this story as the it is almost character in the story. Brooke's tragedy becomes to much for her and she finds herself saved by Chance. (yes, play on words at the same time). There were several times throughout the story where there was a play on words with Chance's name and at one point it was a little much. But, other times, like when Brooke speaks with old man Jacob its beautiful.
Some of the book seems so heart felt and you can't help but plow through the story and then other times, its almost like they are trying to hard to lighten the mood too much. I dark book, is a good book, I think some of the playfulness could have been let out to give more to the dramatic theme of the book. There is some insta-love in this story, but surprisingly, Brooke and Chance just seemed so in sync that it didn't phase me or seem forced, it seemed 100% natural that they feel into place with each other.
I thought Chance was an interesting character and I found myself more drawn to his POV than Brooke's because his just seemed so set on what he wanted even when he was trying to stay away, whereas Brooke seemed lost, confused, and guilt ridden. But after what happened it was understandable, but you didn't really get her thoughts too much just a jumble of things. All in all a great read and the suspense was good. Kind of hoping Agent Clearwater gets his own story as he seems to have one to tell.

Brooke Starr is a piano prodigy poised to go for her dream of Juilliard when, on the way home for Christmas, she hears her whole family being murdered over the phone. Leaving everything behind, including her music, she moves to Alaska and into her Great-Aunt’s old cabin. She takes a position as a deck-hand on a deep sea trawler, but when she gets to Alaska she realizes she might be better off with her family. When she jumps off the pier into the frigid Alaska, Chance Taylor jumps in to save her life. Chance’s only love is the sea but, after saving her life, Brooke gets under his skin and into his heart. When Brooke’s past catches up with her and a killer comes to complete the cycle, Brooke and Chance have to save themselves to save each other.
THE DARKEST JOY will take your breath away. The poignant and heartbreaking emotions Brooke experiences are written in a way which will have readers easily empathizing with her. The explosive chemistry between Chance and Brooke is exquisitely hot, hot, hot! I did want to shake the crap out of Brooke for not answering her phone when the FBI kept calling, but I can understand her need to put the past in the past. All of the characters really created a spark, so lively and well-developed. I loved the fact that Brooke found hope when she thought all was lost. THE DARKEST JOY is a truly enthralling read!
Sorry, it's not you, it's me...or actually, it is you!
It was love at first sight when I first saw the pretty cover and read the intriguing title, but then, soon enough, with every next page everything fell apart.
"...The darkest joy is better than none at all..."
This is my first book by this author. It is written in dual MCs povs. In my opinion, the author has a decent writing style, poetic and evocative at times which I really liked , so I don't have any complaints about that aspect, but as far as the plot and characters are concerned, plus her weird obsession with fish, at one point, it made me wish I were a dnf reader.
The beginning was dark, gripping & heartbreaking. I thought to myself happily: oh, this has potential! The main female character is a piano player what I really liked and could relate to being a former piano player myself for six years in school. Unfortunately, that was all we had in common. The story turned more and more into a sappy & dull romance/ fishing guide with a little mystery what is the main reason for this low rating.
~THE REASONS WHY THIS BOOK TURNED TO BE A...FLOP for me:
1. Lets talk about fish, fishing, fish gutting, fish cleaning etc. 24/7! -_-'
The setting of the story is in Alaska with the main male character being a fisherman and apparently Alaskan people are crazy about fish and everything fish related so much that this book is full of more than long enough descriptions and conversations about fish, fishing, fish gutting, fish cleaning, weird fish phrases etc. In short- it drove me nuts! The only thing I like about fish is, vegan people close your eyes...when they are on the plate or in aquarium and that's it. After this book, I probably won't be eating it at least...for a month, lol.
2. Shallow, dull & frustrating MCs
Both, male and female characters were one of the most boring, immature characters I read in awhile. The girl was too naive, monotonous and she kept changing her mind like she had multiple personalty disorder. The thing that pissed me off the most is that at the beginning of the story she goes through this horrible trauma and she kept saying how broken she is until one day she just stops and the reason for that is explained in a few sentences, while the story about fish and fishing goes on and on and on...
The guy was cheesy, shallow and a part-time frustrating caveman. He tended to get jealous for no reason and then make a scene and the girl tried to play hard to get and failed miserably and forgave him any drama queen scene he made in a second. My only thought about them was: shut up & grow up!, but the story smiled devilishly at me and said: tough luck!
3. Instant love relationship
Instant love relationship was almost always a flop in my reading history and this time wasn't any different. They saw each other for the first time and that was it. How can you fall in love with someone after just one look is beyond me? It never happened to me or people I know and until it does, it will always be something cliche and fairy-tale alike that'll only made my eyes roll. Everything just felt rushed, I didn't feel any real chemistry/ connection between them and the few sex scenes made me asleep.
3. Let's travel to the boring exciting Alaska!
I've never been to Alaska, but its description in this book could never make me want to travel there. It's described as a cold and monotonous place with fish and fishing being the main occupation of people living there.
4. Inconsistent plot
The only thing interesting and exciting about the plot was the beginning and the ending where the most action happened. Anything in-between was monotonous and easily forgettable. The book could have been shorter for a lot of pages spent on introduction on the short-lived life of fish in Alaska in my opinion. I had expected a lot more from the story, but my expectations weren't met.
I don't mean to be a bitchy book-blocker, but this is the way this story made me feel. I can recommend this only to readers who are fans of the reasons above. I'm not and that's why, unfortunately this didn't work out for me, but who knows, it has a pretty good rating on GR and Amazon, so maybe it will for you.
I'm sad to say it, but either this book had a really rushed editing job, or the wrong file got uploaded to the printer. It's that awkward.
It wasn't even a proofreading issue. There were just whole sentences littered throughout the book that I had to read and re-read, often several times, because they simply didn't make sense. It happened just often enough that I began to think MAYBE this was just the author's writing style, but I just can't envision the editorial team at Simon&Schuster not losing sleep over the fact that entire words are missing from sentences.
In the first (of several) really graphic sex scenes, the sex act itself isn't physically possible. Trust me, that was one passage I was happy to read over and over again. I was literally counting it off on my fingers as I read it, though, saying out loud, "Okay, she's on her back, he has his (bleep) pressed against her (bleep), then he (bleeps) while she (bleeps)...how they heck are they now doing it doggy style?" And that's only one example of many. I hate to say it, but it just wasn't...edited?
THIS part is not the author's fault, but I'm a little taken aback by the fact that this is the second NEW ADULT title I've had to review in one week that is a) both really, really, really nasty (the words "balls" and "juggle" are actually used in the same sentence, and no, she doesn't work for the circus), and b) actually describes the fact that the heroine has waxed all of her pubic hair off.
Is this a thing now? Really? We're doing this? Is it supposed to imply that she's a little bit nasty herself? I mean, really, we could just go with, "Hey, just wanted you to know, I'm not a virgin." Since apparently we don't want to go THERE, we have her being really into body hair removal. I'm not really seeing the connection myself, but my bigger fear is that this is going to be the new fashion trend and I will once again not be able to keep up with the latest style.
Without the writing style and the juggle of man-balls, the story line itself, though, was pretty great. Typical girl-meets-boy-they-fall-for-each-other-but-they-shouldn't scenarios take place, and at least in this romance title the heroine has a pretty decent excuse for being weak and needy (as opposed to romances where the girl just happens to be a weak and needy person). One thing I'm seeing more of in the genre--and Eros doesn't disappoint here--is an actual plot with tension and issues, instead of just a vapid love story playing out on the page. There are elements of tragedy, drama, and suspense surrounding a relatively high body count for this genre, but the romance is in there, too.
Received copy fron Netgalley in exchange for an honest review :)
The premise, the idea, the plot it had potential but, I couldn’t connect with the writing style, therefore I couldn’t connect with the characters. This book was difficult to finish. Don’t get me wrong, it is not that it wasn’t good, maybe just not for me.
This book begins with a tragedy, a full blown tragic moment in the life of a young aspiring pianist: Brooke Starr. This tragic moment sets the premise for the story and engages the reader to want more; it gives you the need to understand why and follow Brooke into the road of healing. She leaves in order to start over and ends up in Alaska, after inheriting her great-grans cottage; she lands a job as a deckhand for a fishing boat. Yep! Huge change! She meets Chance, a guitarist, a fisherman, her new boss and a broken soul just like her. And it is likely chance or destiny tha he is there, the night she touched bottom and threw herself to the sea, unwilling to keep living. From there on, we have a passionate, sometimes cheesy, yet bumpy love story.
Like I said, the idea was good but the way the “relationship” starts, the insta-love part just didn’t sit well with me. The story is told from dual first person POV’s but the thoughts, ideas and expression are so unreal I started to get bored. Why? Well, form my perspective a first person POV is supposed to be a dive jump inside the character’s head and feelings. If you dive inside your own head, do your speak in lyrical, metaphors, and use analogies at every corner, at every thought at every minute of every day? NO, of course not. I am not, in any way downgrading the writing. The author did a great job but, under that style I would have preferred the book narrated/third person. That major issue for me, made it hard to finish the book.
I understand that the copy I read is not the one to be published; therefore, I really hope all the errors are fixed by that time. I can point out some of them: long sentences, missed spaces after periods or commas; sometimes “” are not closed after a dialogue and so on.
Anyway, the way the story unraveled near the end was somewhat weird; I thought it could have been handled with better grounds. Anyway, I ended up falling in love with them because they were just great for each other and the overall point of this book is, in fact, the romance.
I would recommend this book to other readers but before warning them about the way it is written.
Brooke Starr is a piano prodigy on her way to Julliard. On her way home for Christmas break from her sophomore year at college, she gets a phone call from her mother and it is heartbreaking to listen to what unfolds.
Chance Taylor is a halibut fisherman in need of a part time summer deck crew. He hires Brooke Starr sight unseen. He lives day to day and takes what he needs from the sea and women.
Brooke runs to Alaska, consumed by survivors guilt. She has been left a cabin by her great aunt and she is using it as a haven away from the life she lost in Seattle. If I am honest, I didn’t connect with any of these characters. Brooke is definitely suffering a tremendous loss but she never really explores the emotions. With her tragedy, I assumed a good deal of the writing would deal with how to overcome such a loss. Brooke barely speaks of it to anybody – not even Chance who she is falling hopelessly in love with. Chance goes from playboy to one girl guy in what seems like a ridiculously short amount of time. He was completely adorable in the ways he took care of Brooke throughout the book and it would be easy to fall in love with him.
The supporting cast of characters (Jake, Evan, and Tucker) all seem very interesting but you only get a short look into who they are before being bounced back into the love story. The back story of a serial killer seemed too rush and quite honestly, I knew where the story was going pretty early on in the book. The story has good bones but I think it could have been developed better. All in all, I wouldn’t read it again because the story just didn’t grab me but I think there are a good deal of readers who would enjoy the story.
The premise, the idea, the plot it had potential but, I couldn’t connect with the writing style, therefore I couldn’t connect with the characters. This book was difficult to finish.

My Review: This is one of those books. It's started out so well and had such an amazing premise, but it just didn't quite live up to its promise. That didn't make it a bad book...although there were areas where it could have been improved so that it would have been spectacular. Overall, I definitely enjoyed reading it. But the promise for loving it was there.... and it made me sad that it just didn't quite pan out for me.
This book is about Chance and Brooke. The book starts out with Brooke on her way home from college for Christmas talking to her mom on the phone. A serial killer comes to the door and Brooke listens to her entire family get viciously murdered over the phone. Then the real story begins five months later when Brooke has moved to Alaska to become a fisherwoman on a halibut crew working with Chance Taylor. Before the murder of her family, Brooke was on her way to Juilliard as a talented pianist. She was a finalist with only her final tryout to go, but with her heart shattered, she can't even look at a piano again.
There were so many aspects to this story that I really loved.... ***I liked the complete 180 for Brooke in careers to become a fisherman. It was mentioned that her brother Joey had done the job before he was murdered, but that was one of those side stories that seemed to be left dangling. I would have loved to know more about Joey and Brooke's relationship. I honestly don't even know how old he was....older or younger. ***The whole group of friends in Homer...not only Chance, but Taylor (and his psychedelic painting of her VW bus) and Evan (and the fact that he wanted to go after Brooke...I wanted more scenes between him and Chance) ***I loved the Alaskan setting and Brooke's Aunt's cabin...even with its rundown condition. ***There was a fabulous build-up about Chance's backstory and how these two are really fated to be together. That part began really well, but kind of fell flat at the end...and felt unfinished even though I think everything was revealed.
And the parts that I didn't quite love so much... ***The romance...I can usually deal with insta-love, but this one just seemed wrong somehow. And honestly, the way it was written was just a little odd. I kept having to stop and go back to make sure I didn't miss the sex before it happened. Both Brooke and Chance kept referring to their evenings like they'd had sex, when all they did was kiss. I had almost decided that this was truly a YA book where all the sex was completely off the page...and then it did happen. It just confused me the way they both think and refer to their very mild evenings together as something much more intimate and I realize they are speaking emotionally, but something was just off with the wording. And I know that sounds weird, but I think you'll understand if you've read the book. ***The serial killer...not a surprise and it seems like this story line is happening way too much. I was ready for some creativity there.
Reading over this review, this sounds really negative. I just needed more, but there was never a single time during the reading of the book that I wanted to put it down. The story is riveting. While I feel a little let down after the book that is simply because it had such promise to go from good to spectacular. But as it is...the book is good.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
My Rant: The Darkest Joy was a suspenseful and emotional journey. From the beginning you are hit with the horrors of Brooke's life and as you watch her drown in her emotion of loss, you feel he need to see her troubles through. Brooke is broken and the pieces that fell from the puzzle cannot be replaced. Affected by her misery Brooke moves to a small town where the people that live in that town are friendly and full with life. This new found town should be a good thing for Brooke but the pain builds to a point where it is unbearable until Chance. I so love him. Chance is missing a piece of himself as well but he thought he was filling that void until he met Brook and the chemistry between both characters collided. Two broken puzzles that come together to make one. The intimacy the build between the characters are enough to make you swoon, big time. The looming threat of the past hunts there future together which makes this romance all the worth reading. The are clues that are in the story but honestly I had no idea who or what was causing all the ruckus until the very thing Brooke held dear speared her in the neck. The hurt and pain is intense because Brooke had no idea that her attachments where the very thing that shattered her life. What I liked about the story is that we got to have agent clearwater in this thrilling mystery. I was glad that after A Terrible Love he still had it in him to continue with the FBI. I like his character allot. Clearwater always brings a sense of safety with him, especially when he cares so much about the people he is deemed to protect. Chance is a life saver in and out of the bedroom. His loyalty and dedication to the people he loves never wavers. He is the perfect gentleman although he has been deemed the player. Chance gave Brooke the reason to take a chance on life and when Brook grab his lifeline you think all is well. Tssk, Tssk, Marata does not do easy romance. The villain caused more heartache and its felt through the story but this angst helps Brooke to grow and let go and finally live her life. Persevering in the darkest joy is the only way to live.
Overall I love this story the characters and the plot. The wicked twist and turns and the exposed threat made me chew all my nails down to the skin. My nails look bad y'all really bad but thats what a good novel does to you.
My Recommendation:
I rated this book 5 out of 5 and would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a romance with a suspenseful twist.

The Darkest Joy by Marata Eros eARC received from Gallery Books via Edelweiss Release Date: February 18, 2014 Reviewed by: Middle Sis Jenn The Sisters Say: Had great potential, but the writing needs serious editing
I really wanted to like this one. It sounded so great—a Julliard candidate whose family is murdered runs off to Alaska to find herself again—only the killer won’t let her get away. It’s a great concept, and I love romantic suspense novels. However, this one was not done well. The writing seemed almost tacky at times, the characters walked the line on believability, and romance was way too insta-lovey.
It’s a big deal for me to call something insta-love. I usually like the “love at first sight” romance, but the romance in this one just didn’t seem realistic. Chance rescues Brooke after a suicide attempt, and the very next day, they are both in love with each other? I just don’t see that happening. There could have been some kind of Nightingale syndrome, but not on the part of both of them. It just seemed so fake to me, and as a result, I had a hard time even when the relationship did progress to a point where love would have been possible.
The writing really bugged me at times, too. There were some chapters that were well-written and times when I enjoyed the story; however, there were other times when the writing seemed to be very, for lack of a better word, childish. Too many simple sentences and too many bland words that just didn’t create a visual effect for me as a reader. And the love scenes? I literally laughed out loud (not in a good way) because the descriptions were just so awkward.
And then we have the characters—at times, each of the characters were interesting and you could see behind their actions. But then there were others times when they just seemed so flat and boring. This is a story about recovery, and I just didn’t see Brooke going through those stages of grief that she should have gone through. She went from clinically depressed and wanting to die to “I’m so in love” and that’s all that matters. Plus, I found it really unbelievable that she would ignore the FBI’s calls and letters when the murderer is still on the loose.
Overall, this is not one of the better NA books on the market right now. It is one of the first ones I have read that had an element of suspense in it; however, it just wasn’t done well. I think with some extreme editing on the syntax, plus some more vivid descriptions, this could be a much better book
OMG I love Marata Eros this tale is delicious and fishy, Marata Eros tries to sway you from figuring out who the killer is while expertly giving you an awesome ride on the romance wheel.
Brooke is devastated and heart sore from the murder of her family and in return goes to Alaska to disappear, her emotions through the beginning to middle of the story are understandable and you go on the wavy rolling ride of despair, anger and grief. Marata Eros' depictions of her grief are very descriptive and you cant help but put yourself in her place. Brooke's thoughts are thorough and entirely sad. When she decides to end the pain in the Alaskan Sea's she is rescued by the gorgeous Chance Taylor.
Chance is wonderful although he originally is the playboy type all inked and strong and pretty but Brook changes his ways and makes him fall for her quickly. Chance is interesting as a character he makes it alot about Brooke and her feelings and goes with what he can work with. I love that he doesn't give up on Brooke. Chance has the incredible ability to make Brooke love again, he takes her away from herself and her grief to start living again.
The connection between Chance and Brooke is beautiful and their attraction feels more natural and there is the whole love at first sight, meant for each other feeling, even though Brooke feels she must deny it that she isn't worthy.
I liked the back and forth between the characters you get both sides and their reactions.
The sexy scenes and the lead up to them are blissfully tension filled and enjoyable, although not as spicy as some of her other stories, however still hot enough to singe your lashes. Towards the end the sexy times are more intimate and love fuelled.
YAY!!! Decatur Clearwater is back as a cameo guest the FBI lead in the case although we don't get a lot of him it is still nice to see an awesome character from another story, I think he needs his own. (News Just in he is supposed to be getting his own story - Happy dance)
Marata Ero's incredible whit is depicted throughout this story in random bursts of humour. “Its colder than a witch's tit on the shady side of an iceberg” this is why I love this lady she has some funny lines.
All up a Fabulous story with a new mix of characters to love and adore, and some excellent twists and turns to make your head spin, and a sweet sweet ending.
I was really excited to read the Darkest Joy by Marata Eros. I loved the premise of the story as soon as I read the blurb.
Brooke Starr experiences a terrible loss after losing her family in a violent crime. She decides to move to Alaska to live in her deceased Aunts cabin to try to get come to grips with her loss and figure out what she wants to do after deciding not to go on to Juliard, as she always dreamed. She gets hired as a deck hand on a deep sea fishing boat but before she starts her new position, Brooke makes a rash decision that brings her into contact with Chance Taylor, her sexy new boss. A relationship quickly develops...but can Brooke overcome her past to start a new life in Alaska?
Oh the drama of this book!As much as I loved the blurb, I didn't end up loving the book. I thought the framework of the story had a lot of potential but I didn't like how it actually came together. Some of the writing seemed choppy and the story didn't seem to flow as well as a finished book should flow. I also didn't feel like the story was very well developed. There were several times I wish the author would have taken more time hashing things out. Instead it seemed like several events were merely touched on. The pacing at times seemed very rushed especially in the development of the relationship between Brooke and Chance. The climax of the suspense part of the story seemed rushed as well and when everything came to a head, it just seemed way over the top. I also thought that Brooke did a couple things that put her in the TSTL (too stupid to live) category. Not listening to repeated voicemails the FBI is leaving her seemed pretty ridiculous to me. It also didn’t seem likely that Brooke wouldn’t be more interested in other similar crimes that are occuring.
The book wasn't terrible. It was an okay read. I just hate reading a book that has the potential to be really good but then falls flat. I was left disappointed. Still, a THREE STAR read for me. I'm not sure that I would read more books that are planned in this series though.

1.5
Juilliard bound pianist Brooke, loses everything in a blink of an eye. Her whole family massacred. Not only does she have to deal with the tragic murders of her loved ones, the killer’s stalking and killing off Brooke’s “would-be” contenders – other Juilliard bound pianists no longer able to play after the murders.
Haunting nightmares, the pain of the past, old friends, and a new flame in a strange place forces Brooke to confront her fears, pain, The One Who Ruined Her Life, and The One Who Will Change Her Life. She weeps, she plays, she grieves, and she loves.
I liked the (attempted) mystery of the killer. I had guessed, but wasn’t sure – then the confrontation happened & I really DID NOT like the rationale. But, I guess a crazy killer can’t possibly think logically. Still, I wanted more grit & less ‘sexy-time.’
Chance was as hot as any other alpha-male type: protective, possessive, a retired slut, and a sexy fisherman. I don’t mind cliché characters as long as the author writes the shit out of that character, while adding their own unique touches. Unfortunately, Chance’s fisherman bod and old slutty ways didn’t draw me in. Even his guitar-playing didn’t really impress me. He was just another stock character & thus, the romance fizzled early on.
All in all, I think the focus of this book was off. I almost felt pulled in two different directions. One was a heavy focus on romance & sex, the other of grief, murder, mystery, anger and betrayal.
Also, there was a bit too much tell, not show – like, I didn’t get the full extent of Brooke’s suffering, after having lost her whole family in a massacre. How could she still play (even in private)? And she was so eager to jump on Chance. I get that he’s hot and stuff, but giiiiirl, your family just got mass-murdered. Think.
Then her guilt over liking Chance and “having a chance at happiness” further frustrated me. STOP whining, and DO something about it then, if you’re going to feel that guilty!
On a very good day, this book will probably only be a mediocre read. Read at your own risk! =/
How to start this one…lets say this was one intense read. I am very happy I got this one for a review; I needed something different and heart filling. Eros did a fascinating job keeping me hooked form the start to the finished.
This one follows two main characters’, Brooke and Chance. Both dealing with lots of pain and some past things they wish they could forget. Brooke had it all until one night everything thing and everyone she loved us taken from her. Her family is murdered and she is all-alone. Her music was the one thing that helped her feel and now it’s doing nothing to heal the pain. She needs a fresh start, so moving to Alaska is going to be a huge step for Brooke and she is not sure it will help her move on.
Chance Taylor, the boy who has never loved a girl because he is committed to the sea and women will just get in the way. But after playing one night at the bar he sees young women that catches is eye and he can’t seem to shake. But after he is done she is gone and he is left with wonder.
I loved reading this book, I might have had a feeling what was going on but it was such a fresh read, it had a story line I could not put down and it flowed so perfect. After Chance and Brooke meet and not in a good way things start to go off. These two have a connection that will make you smile and Chance it such an awesome guy. I don’t want to give a whole lot away because it is better sometimes to read the story in your own eyes but Brooke is once fragile girl and to have found a guy like Chance you will feel like she is your own sister and want to jump in the book to hug them both. They will deal with some ups and downs that’s for sure but there love for each other will work through it.
Eros did amazing writing this one and I would love love to see a book from Chance’s POV only, I mean after you read you will see why maybe there can be more info on him and his past life before Brooke! I think this s for sure a MUST read!
This is another spectacular novel by the ever talented Marata Eros (aka. Tamara Rose Blodgett), and a must read for fans of the NA genre. Complete with a budding romance, murder, mystery, and mayhem, this novel will glue readers to the page from the very beginning, enticing them onward as the plot unfolds, secrets are divulged, and healing begins, only to be met with the sinister actions of an obsessive and erratic murderer...
I am in awe of the talent Eros possesses. Her previous novels, A Terrible Love and A Brutal Tenderness are already a testament to her amazing skill as an author, but The Darkest Joy may be perhaps my favorite of her novels to date. The perfect love story, surrounded by believable characters, freighting possibilities, and steamy romance, it's a superb read.
Eros paints a vivid picture of life in Alaska as her story unfolds, setting her characters against a beautiful backdrop, one readers so rarely hear about. It presents a wonderful change, setting itself in the wild, and though not interested in fishing myself, I absolutely adored learning about Chance's business and watching Brooke and Chance interact, both on and off the ship.
Of course, Eros utilizes my favorite point of view--first person--allowing me to connect with the characters on a deeper level than that of third person, and I love the alternating points of view offset by chapter headings. Many authors use this style, giving readers inside glimpses into their main characters, and when done correctly, as Eros does, it speaks volumes.
Intertwining a talented musician with tragedy and escape was also a beautiful touch, and I loved how music was presented as a healing entity on top of that of love--the age old remedy in helping one heal. It's a beautiful story, one you must read; you just must.
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Simon and Schuster and Edelweiss.) Brooke is heading home for the holidays when her entire family is brutally murdered. Needing to get away, Brooke heads to her dead aunts house in Alaska, intending to get a job, and get away from her old life. In Alaska Brooke meets Chase, and they are instantly attracted to each other. Who killed Brooke’s family? And are they finished murdering people or not?
This was an okay story with some steamy love scenes.
Brooke was an okay character, although surprisingly I didn’t really feel all that sorry for her. I did wonder if she was running away from her feelings a bit when she moved to Alaska, but I could also see why she might want a break.
The storyline in this was okay, but I thought the ‘romantic’ moments were much better than the rest of the storyline. While this may sound awful I wanted more details about the murder of Brooke’s family. I felt like we were only given a really small amount of information where that was concerned, and it bugged me that we weren’t told more. I really wanted to know exactly what had happened, but it seems we will never find out. The romance in this was good, and while I didn’t really get the instant attraction Brooke and Chance felt, I liked the flirting and the way this pair were together. We did get some ‘love’ scenes, and they were pretty steamy, and the best part of the book for me. The ending was okay, and I didn’t manage to guess who the killer was. Most things were wrapped up nicely, so I’m not sure if the next book will be about these same characters or not. I will probably read the next book, but it will be for the romance rather than the mystery. Overall; an okay story, with a steamy romance. 7 out of 10.
This was a good combination of mystery/suspense and romance. Brooke is living a full, happy life. She is an extremely talented pianist, preparing for Juilliard with a loving family supporting her. On her way home from college for the holidays her family is victim to a unknown brutal serial killer. Falling into darkness she runs away from what remains of her life and heads to Alaska to the property that her Great Aunt left her. Now all she has to do is take a Chance!
After succumbing to the darkness and in a moment of weakness Brooke decides to join her family and jumps into the icy ocean. And as fate would have it Chance was walking along and saw Brooke dive. He jumps in after her and saves her from the icy depths. Instantly drawn to one another they can't seem to avoid each other. As it would happen Chance is her new boss! And he can't pass up the unbelievable attraction he feels for her. But it is more than just attraction he wants her with all of his heart and soul and that is a first for Chance. As others are happy to point out to Brooke. Still recovering and starting to feel more alive than she has since she lost her family Brooke is struggling to recognize what it is that Chance wants from her.
All while Brooke is in Alaska she has relentlessly ignored the FBI and the status on the serial killer torturing the potential Juilliard students. Along with her best friend visiting her in Alaska she is forced to face her past and the killer that wants more than just her family.
I really enjoyed this story. I felt my heart breaking right along with Brooke's. I just wanted to help pick her up. And I love Chance and all of the little chancisms. This was a well written story and all of the parallels that were were written between the characters really made it endearing.
Wow, I finished this late last night and decided to "sit" on my review for a bit just because for most of it I felt barfy. But hold on don't harp at me nor get all angry! I've never been a fan of the insta love/love at first sight... maybe because I personally have never felt it. Sure I get that lust at first sight ever now and then etc.But who doesn't. Back on track, so this concept was pretty interesting due to the mystery of who the killer was and someone finding themselves after tragedy comes and knocks you socks off. I feel really bad for our heroine but at the same time I felt she was rushed I know she loves music but I almost felt there should have been a bit more guard up and her being more stand offish to Chance, but just like his name suggests and just the descript of him alone can make you feel a bit of lust blown air I suppose she could slide and ravish him. She sort of did need a little roughing it in the hay if ya catch my drift. Most of the side characters were 2D to me, they were there but not. You didn't know them enough to have that pit fall when or if something happened to them. One thing I loved was the setting, I've always wanted to go to Alaska (just to visit) to see all that it is and of course I think it would be amusing to witness the months they go without night/sun. I'd say this was a solid 3 star for me, just needed a bit more umph in the character development, but great start for a plot and loved the setting. Learned quite a bit on the whole fisherman aspect lol
I am going to lay it out there for you right up front – this book is somewhat dark and it is loaded with intense feelings of despair and sadness. If you deeply feel for the characters in a book, be prepared for this one. Brooke is a broken woman and you follow her through her despair and her healing. This is a poignant book that leaves you feeling happy, sad and as shell-shocked as the main character does in parts of this story.
The author does an amazing job pouring this girls heart into the story. But it is not only sadness as there is the bright outlook when she meets Chance – and what a perfect name for him. Handsome with a wonderful heart, he falls hard for Brooke and wants to help her break free of her past. There are plenty of twists to add to the story overall and keep those pages turning.
This novel falls under many categories for me. It is a work of fiction, full of suspense, romance, mystery and happiness too. It is one that is intended for adult readers and one that is really a work of art. The author did an amazing job on her characters; I still think about them today. I love the who-done-it twist at the end. I was not expecting that at all but it was so fitting!
For a great all around read that will suck you right in and not let you go until the end, check out The Darkest Joy! It is a great read!
This book took awhile for me to warm up to but once I did I fell in love with it. Chance he's a man's man, and that boy can do anything and he makes it look sexy, :"I catch sight of Chance and my formerly cool skin heats. I watch his automatic supple movements as he guts fish. You can't think for a moment that a job like that can be sexy, but it's a testimony to Chance that he is...no matter what he's doing." His sense of humor in some situations isn't ideal, "you're fired," I say without a forward though and kneerjerk reacting all over the place. Brooke's face falls, her lower lip trembles. Oh dear baby Jesus. "Brooke," I begin. A slow tear struggles out of her eye and something small in me dies at seeing that tangible bit of sadness. "I was kidding." I'm not. I'll can her a** in a second if that's the stipulation for being with me. In a second. But I don't want her hurt." He does have a jealous issue, "I didn't like the look on Brooke's face when she spoke to her friend and I don't much like the open trust she's showering on Evan. Like he deserves it. Sh** no." He can be a playful naughty boy as well, "did you like that?" he whispers, pressing harder against me and my breath catches."
There is something so dark, so sexy, so erotic, and a web of suspense and storytelling spun flawlessly throughout the pages of The Darkest Joy. From the first words I read…I’m a goner. Completely submerged and engrossed in the journey to where the words lead me. A story that will captivate you and have you guessing until the very end. Delve into the lives of Chance Taylor and Brooke Starr, read their thoughts, feel their emotions as their love story radiates off the pages. Feel the connection between Chance and Brooke that is so real, so strong, it’s almost tangible. A love story that is raw, edgy, intriguing, full of suspense, full of hope, and has you believing that “joy in the darkness” can be found. On a side note: I loved that Agent Clearwater was part of this story and the reference made to Cas and Jewell from A Terrible Love and A Brutal Tenderness (two of my favorite books) and to know that Agent Clearwater is getting his own story is fantastic. One I look forward to reading. The Darkest Joy is so addictive that once you start reading, you won’t put it down until you’ve reached the end, it is just that good!! ~ 5 ~ Joy in the Darkness ~ Stars
