Love anything by Steven Kellogg, especially his Pinkerton (the Great Dane) series. This is not my favorite but still great fun. Especially love all the kids in home made looking dinosaur costumes. The strengths in this and his other books is zany stories that lead up to fun mayhem and detailed illustrations that is fun to pour over details.

In this book Pinkerton is teething and they make fun of a big dog doing destruction to all the things he chews on. At one point he is chewing on the neighbors tree that also happens to be a tree holding up the hammock the neighbor is lounging in. He says:

'That's not a Great Dane puppy, it's a giant beaver!

A little later the the little girl has to go off to the Dinosaur museum. She realizes:

'Yikes! There's no way I can leave you here alone. I'll have to hide you in the stegosaurus costume and take you to the museum.'

You will need to read the book to see the mayhem that happens.

In Prehistoric Pinkerton, a young girl takes her pet great dane, Pinkerton, to the museum to see the dinosaur exhibit with her class. Pinkerton is teething, so he runs and steals a bone from a full dinosaur skeleton. The professor over the museum gets upset, but the girl tries to comfort him, telling him that Pinkerton may be the closest thing to a living dinosaur he gets to see.

I didn't like this book all that much. I think it is part of a series, and I started reading at a part where I hadn't been invested in the characters already. I didn't like how quickly Pinkerton was excused for misbehaving, even if he is a dog. I did like the dialogue format, and could see it being used for a simple theatre exercise.

I probably wouldn't choose to use this in a classroom. I am in the south and they briefly mention evolution once or twice and don't feel like I'm qualified to talk about that topic and the religious implications with children the age this book is aimed at. If I did use it, I would want to have read the rest of the series with the class to introduce other topics and use this one to introduce a dinosaur unit. I could also use this as a theatre exercise, using the dialogue as a script.

Steven Kellog has been one of my favorite authors/ illustrators since I was a little child. I really like the way he takes a crazy idea like a Great Dane going to a dinosaur museum and breaking through the chains and chewing on dinosaur bones. I know this is a crazy idea but in the back of my mind, I'm thinking, "a great dane probably could chew on a small dinosaur bone." This would be a great book to read to your class before you go on a field trip to discuss proper behavior on the field trip. Kellog does a great job of bringing these pictures to life and that is why I would recommend this book to any teacher. This would be a creative book to read while discussing the past.

Sorry, but no, I just can't. First the puppy takes down a whole tree... one end of a hammock mount which is in the neighbor's yard and in which the neighbor is napping and barely escapes with his life, then he chews the legs off the piano, and then the little girl takes him on a field trip? Wtf? This is funny because the young reader will gloat that they would know better how to take care of their dog? Or it's funny because destructiveness is slapstick? Sorry, not to my taste at all. If my kids brought it home to show me what they thought was funny we'd have an educational opportunity right there.

Prehistoric Pinkerton is a fun tale about a young girl and her dog, named Pinkerton. The dog is teething and chews on everything in sight. The dog and the girl run into many problems because of this.Eventually, they have to hide Pinkerton in a museum with a dinosaur, and hilarity ensues. It is a fun, light, easy to read story. The book contains vocabulary about dinosaurs, but is not an informative piece on the species. It is a enjoyable story about a girl and her dog.

Pinkerton, the Great Dane puppy, is now teething. In an effort to avoid further destruction of their house, Emily takes Pinkerton (in a dino disguise) with her on her class visit to the natural history museum, which is full of dinosaur bones. This is my personal favorite of the 5 Pinkerton picture books. I love the idea of Dinosaur Day! The children's costumes are so inventive. What a terrific learning activity for a classroom or group of kids.

Pinkerton has begun the teething process and is busily chewing on everything he can find, Mother has taken the piano teacher home, so Pinkerton’s little girl dresses him in a Stegosaurus costume and takes him to the museum for her class’s Dinosaur Day. Everyone in Ms. McDuff’s class is dressed as a dinosaur. The museum director, Doctor Zandorfosaurus, an expert on prehistoric life, is showing the children around the museum and telling them about the various displays.

Then the Great Dane sees the Diplodocus skeleton on display in the museum. What will happen?

=========

Pinkerton the Great Dane returns in a hilarious new story. Preschool and primary readers are the targeted audience for the simple text, accompanied by full-color wash-and-ink illustrations. Be prepared for a giggle-fest as the rambunctious puppy manages to create chaos and mayhem.

Highly recommended.

There is no better author/illustrator than Steven Kellogg! Pinkerton is one of the classic "chaotic" pups of enjoyment. In this sweetness of fun, Pinkerton is teething, and as a great Dane bones are essential. While Emily is preparing for her class trip to the Natural Museum of History, she reads to Pinkerton about dinosaurs. Her teacher has invited the class to dress-up in dinosaur costumes for their "Dinosaur Day" of exploration. Thinking that she could take Pinkerton with her, she hides his identity in a dinosaur costume. What, oh what, would a teething pup do in a museum of dinosaur bones?

With delightful word choice, chaos revealing illustrations, and humorous giggles... Pinkerton will take your heart and fill it with joy!

You can not go wrong with a Steven Kellogg read aloud!

Such a cute fictional book. My grandma used to read it to my sister and I all the time because, our last name is Pinkerton. I definitely recommend reading this book to a group of kids such as at a daycare. It is funny and Steven Kellogg is a great author!

Pinkerton is a great dane puppy who is cutting his new teeth. He chews on anything he can find, so Emily cannot leave him home alone when she goes on the class trip to a museum. She fits him into a dinosaur costume, which Emily believes is fabulous since she believes Pinkerton's 36x great grandmother was a stegosaurus. All is going well until Pinkerton spies a dinosaur skeleton. Great illustrations for this enjoyable story.

Picture Book: This book had an interesting storyline. It sort of confused me because I never associated dogs with dinosaurs. Quick synopsis: Pinkerton is a great Dane related to the dinosaurs. His great great great great…grandmother was a stegosaurus. The little girl narrator takes him to the museum and he eats a dinosaur bone. He’s teething.

Funny story, that allows predictions to be made as it is read. The color use is great, and the illustrations really enhance the text.
